I didn't start using a fountain pen until my early 50s. I loved the idea of writing, but not the actual writing itself because my hand always cramped up. I'm a lefty and was always a hooked overwriter. One day when researching something else I came across articles about fountain pens. So I took the plunge and bought some inexpensive ones in case I didn't like them. Well, I liked them, and won't hardly use anything else. My favorite pen is my Grey Houndstooth Pilot Metropolitan, F nib, Noodler's X-Feather Black ink. And because I was a hooked overwriter for so many years, it took a while to train myself to be an underwriter. These fountain pens are so much easier on my arthritis. Although I wrote my sermon notes with my fountain pen, I had to type them up so I could actually read them while I was preaching. Looks like I'm in good company.
I’m glad I’m not alone in hand writing my sermons. Very clean, very legible, and easy to follow. I just take in information and remember it much clearer when I’m writing it out. I hand wrote all of my seminary class notes as well. And partially I also want to admit some of it is pride. I take pride in my notes and having them organized. I have hand written notes for every sermon and being that I am an expository preached I go verse by verse chapter by chapter book by book, so I have an entire catalog of notes for Ephesians John Romans and James. It’s just kinda cool to look at those notes as a whole I guess.
I appreciate how seriously you take the craft of your calling. Certainly it is a calling but it is also a gift that we have to develop and hone and improve for the glory of God. I've been preaching for over 20 years, and I still strive to do better the next time than I did the last time. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. They are helpful.
I Just Want to Thank You, from a very secular perspective, for your truly refreshing and insightful little talk here. As a fellow fountain pen appreciator, it's always interesting to hear the perspectives of those who share my Affinity. Keep up your good work.
Thank you! You have articulated very clearly...what I have tried to share with friends about writing and studying. I am 65 and started using the method of re-writing my notes to study. Many years in the corporate world using a Keyboard confirmed handwriting is necessary . I am writing this with a stylus...on my phone. I most often use my Remarkable Two for Bible Study, Counseling Notes, and Hope work... I write with a stylus that flows and then can email...either as a handwritten note or convert to text. Sharing so parents will realize the need to teach their children Cursive... BTW, I handwrite scripture in a Journible also.
Thank you! I am 66 years old and had to use Sheaffer Cartridge pens in catholic school. I’ve been using fountain pens seriously for 20 years and love them. I usually carry 4-6 each day. I was recently ordained as a minister and also write my messages with fountain pen. Thank you for your work and commitment to our Lord Jesus Christ! Frank in colorado
Amen, I too love writing my sermon notes with a fountain pen. Adding to what Steve has already said, I will switch pens during writing. The new pen personality, the new ink color adds a push or uptick in my energy level and increases my waning concentration levels. I just love the fountain pen and am also a collector. Thanks Steve.
Yes! This is so true. I write and enjoy it only when I use my fountain pen. I must hear the scratch of the pen on the paper. It does bleed through my Preacher's Bible however. Lol. Thanks for this upload.
I enjoyed this video! While doing missions work in Germany I got into using fountain pens. It is still the norm in school and in business there to use fountain pens. My daughter in 1st grade had to begin using one and learning to write in cursive as well. We lived in Heidelberg (2020-2021) which just so happens to be the city where the LAMY headquarters and their flagship store are located. My favorite brand is now Kaweco. I still type my sermon notes, but I handwrite my study notes in my journal with my fountain pen. People who haven't tried it.... You're missing out. It really is an enjoyable experience.
I agree with you on all accounts. My most frequent/favorite FPs use are Pelikan m800, Pilot Custom 823, TWSBI 580 Diamond AL, OMAS Ogiva. Piston fillers and vacuum fillers work really well for me. God bless you Pastor Lawson. All glory and honor to our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hello Dr. Lawson; I found this video on RU-vid. I’m a long time user of fountain pens myself since the late 60’s in Taiwan as a 4th grader. I greatly appreciate your explanation and if you don’t mind I borrow it when strangers ask me about what is the pen I’m writing with and why.
All of a sudden, I feel so inspired and encouraged that (like Dr Lawson) I owned a decent sized Fountain Pen Collection; and that's pretty much I have to show for! LOL! Praise the LORD JESUS!
I kind of disagree with the fact when he mentioned something about not remembering what you type on a computer versus writing. If someone opens up a Word document they typed 3 years ago, chances are they will remember it since they have deep memory of it. It's similar to when I help a friend remember something he said 10 years ago and he remembered what he said right away because the soul records it.
Are you serious? Fountain pens is a topic to discuss. I am 76 .... pastor of 57 years.... I can type three time as fast as i can write. I too earned my doctorate on a typewriter.... This is a crazy topic....
