@@PieceofHebrew Just for the sake of clarification, we're really talking about acronyms here, nachon? Abbreviations like 'וכו (etc.) seem to occur very rarely by comparison with acronyms. Anyway, I think it bears noting that, although modern Hebrew takes roshei teivot in all kinds of new and fanciful directions (see below for funny example that I recently saw), the phenomenon isn't new. It goes back at least 1500 years to the Talmudic and Midrashic literature in both Hebrew and Aramaic and became a common feature in the writings of the commentators, codifiers, etc since then. The fact that Yiddish has very few acronyms, and most of them are for Hebrew words (I think the same can be said for Ladino) makes me think that the phenomenon arose due to a combination of reasons. The fact that Hebrew and Aramaic lack vowel letters makes it easier to put into practice and the need for students to commit vast amounts of information to memory makes the use of acronyms an excellent mnemonic device. Probably the most famous is R' Yehudah's mnemonic acronym for the10 Plagues that we say every year at the Seder - דצ''ך עד''ש באח''ב. Just my two shekels' worth. So here's the funny one I recently saw - לכסת״ח. I have no idea how common this is, but it means "to cover one's behind!"
