Peter Schmeichel has talked about how in the 1990s, there was one premier league attacker that Sir Alex Ferguson would focus on more than any ever others in his Manchester United team talks and meetings.
A scarily skilled dribbler of the ball, Steve Mcmanaman thrilled spectators up and down England with Liverpool, before moving to Spain and enjoying stunning success with Real Madrid.

I was gonna comment this exact words of the original comment. It's criminal he wasn't in the England team more. Same with Matt LeTissier one of the most technically gifted players in the history of the British game, but chose to stay at Southampton his whole career instead of a bigger club so only won 8 England caps.

@@thejudge-kv2jk Macca was just cool, very likeable, and did not seem fake, like Beckham. He fully embraced living in Spain and connecting with Spanish culture during his time in Madrid and made an effort to learn the local language, something that a lot of English players playing abroad don’t do. The Madridistas appreciated that in addition to his 100% commitment on the pitch.

People forget about Macca. In the 90's he was a superstar in the league. So technically gifted for an English player. It's bizarre that he went to Real Madrid of all teams and won two champions leagues and it's not really talked about. Everyone just assumes he went there and sat on the bench for years but he was a star there. The fans still love him to this day. When Roy Evans was playing his 5 3 2 formation with Macca as the 10 he was amazing. As a Liverpool fan whenever he got the ball you just knew he was going to go past a pack of players. I always have a big what if with Liverpool back then. So many home grown stars and young players with potential signed. I always think what if in 2000 we have a healthy Rob Jones, Jamie Rednkapp, Owen and Fowler. Four careers that could have been drastically different had it not been for injuries. And Macca never leaves and Gerrard shows up. And throw Carra in there too why not 🤣

@@mojebi3804 Yeah dude you know 🤣 it was a different time 😂back then and moving forward maybe ten or fifteen years it wasn't cool to be a Zola or a Cantona if you were English. Macca scored an absolute screamer in the champions league final. Legend. Honestly I think he was just ahead of his time. Macca was a GREAT player on his day ... but he was also capable of disappearing for multiple games at a time. And that was Liverpool's greatest enemy in the 90s ... consistency. There were a couple of seasons during the mid 1990's where Liverpool had the best team in the league, but that means nothing if you don't turn up for one out of every three games. Liverpool players just couldn't seem to focus on the big prize on the horizon. United could do that. Win game after game, pile on the points, keep their eye and mind on the long haul ... but all the Liverpol players, INCLUDING Macca, just didn't have that discipline. They would win a huge fixture and have all the newspapers praise them ... then 7 days later a ragged Wimbledon side would beat them 1-0 ... and players like Macca would look uninterested. It was a very frustrating era.

It's disappointing that you didn't mention one of the greatest man marking performances possibly of all time in Roy Keane's MOTM display against Mcmanaman in the FA cup final of 1996. The previous year saw Sir Alex Ferguson express anger with Paul Ince's performance at marking Mcmanaman and when the two teams met in the FA cup final Eric Cantona persuaded Sir Alex Ferguson to stick Keane on Mcmanaman. Keane stopped Liverpool's attacks virtually on his own and never let Mcmanaman have a moment to breathe. It's a compliment to both players that their battle went a long way to deciding the game.

I could actually understand why Hoddle would pick Beckham over McManaman: 1. I think McManaman disagreed with Hoddle on a couple things, including his whole shaman shtick. 2. Beckham had great chemistry with people and was well-received generally (most of whom, Hoddle). 3. Beckham showed that he was a dedicated team player both on the pitch and in training, especially in terms of defensive cover. 4. Hoddle’s tendency not to pick luxury players. Le Tissier would have been a phenomenal super-sub if he had been picked more often. I think it’s the same with McManaman. 5. The National Team didn’t favor an intricate, well-knit, short passing system, which would have fit him much better at the time. 6. Sponsors becoming incredibly powerful.

As a liverpool fan i was pretty bitter when he left us for free. I always felt not getting a proper fee for Owen and no money for Macca set us back as were were not able to replace either of them with players of a similar level of quality. It hurt as a fan because at the time it told me they did not respect the club or the fans who had put them where they were, only their own personal careers/achievements. I still believe this. However watching this made me remember what a player he could be on his day and why i was so gutted when he chose to pursue his career at a bigger club leaving us to 20 years of mediocrity.

Good dribbler but easy to deal with as seen in Liverpool European games where players had a bit more IQ.Liverpool was always the same.Pass sideways a lot, give it to barnes because he’s a “genius”he would pass it to stevie mac who would then try to dibble past everyone. No problem him beating people as long as you decided in which areas, you could always encourage him to beat you in a place that would run him up a blind alley where he could be dealt with.A dribble is only as good as the pass or shot at the end of it.Distinctly average at best for both.
