IMO (as a Gen x) I love Gen Z ! Most, if not all the Gen Zs I’ve met are like a breath of fresh air, think outside the box , and are just amazing. Every Gen has their ‘bad apples’. I believe you can be original and have your individual personality , style etc, and still have class.

I’m so sorry teaching politeness had that outcome with your class. I can see how that would likely be the response from parents today. I’m very thankful that my daughter’s kindergarten teacher taught respect to the class, granted we had a very good class of students and intentional parents so it was easy, but she taught these little 5-6 year olds to say “I respectfully disagree” when they had a disagreement with a classmate 🥲 so thankful my daughter got to experience her as a teacher and I learned a little along the way too!

I'm a French living in Spain and let's put it this way: here the emphasis on good manners is not very strong 😞 my daughter is 4 and already knows how to say thank you (I usually have to remind it to her when someone gives her something in a store). I try my best to make sure she says goodbye. I am pretty sure almost none of her classmates do that. Even older children like yours barely know how to say thank you. It's honestly appalling 😮

@perthfanny3017 I loved being in France and seeing a culture of politeness still in place. Thank your bus driver, say hello and goodbye to shop clerks and drivers, etc. It was uncomfortable for me at first, because of my French ability, but after a year I was fine and was really shocked when I returned to America that we really don’t do that. I could see why you might be having a hard time in another country. Class and politeness is much more expected in France than anywhere else I’ve been.

I adore France. Even in Paris where things are very fast paced, manners are still VERY much a prevalent part of the everyday. To the OP of this comment, I applaud your teaching your son manners and etiquette. He will be less uncomfortable in most all situations because he knows how to handle himself. Manners and etiquette not only make a wonderful impression, they also help to make others more comfortable in your presence-hence being invited back as others will find joy in being with you. It’s not about consequences. Why should anyone care if you like them? In the US especially we are taught that it’s up to you to make it on your own. Only rely on yourself. It’s capitalism and you need to figure it all out. With that mentality no one needs anyone to like them. It’s just creating a society where no cares about others or their opinions. People are just trying to survive and if your opinion isn’t contributing to that you don’t matter. That’s the reality of how things are today.

This is harsh but true. While some people are internally motivated to make good choices, others need external motivation. That's where consequences come into play. I've drawn boundaries and won't associate with people who routinely exhibit crass behavior.

Yeah, I am about to promote at work, I will have a leadership position. My boss keeps saying I have to be more assertive and even rude. I believe in kindness, quiet confidence and earning respect through being polite and well mannered. But my boss is not like and he keeps trying to change me haha

@@yaeltuttebel I used to be a Supervisor. Most people will do as you ask, as long as it is in their job description. They understand they can't say "No" to doing the job they agreed to do when hired. The issue is with people I call "Boundary Pushers" who would rather do anything than their job eg stand around chatting for hours. They are the minority, say 5-10%, but you need to spot them and learn how to deal with them. You need to have a chat with them, be firm and have clear boundaries. They won't like it, you may get called all sorts of names, I was and replied "I am just doing my job" - should have added, "You need to do yours" They may go away and reflect on it, and improve, but usually they don't and will leave. They often like to see themselves as chilled, laid back and free spirits or rebels. That is great, and there is a place for peole like that in the world, but in a business, stuff needs to get done and it is unfair to expect the other team mates to pick up their slack which leads to resentment.

I remember when I was 19 I used to work at this very posh and expensive restaurant and bar, where wealthy and very wealthy people would dine. I remember being so shocked, to see how all these people behaved and carried on, and they were what we classify as new money. It was the old money that were just a pleasure to deal with, because they were so lovely, kind and spoke to myself (waitress) with respect, and I could spot them a mile away from the way they dressed and carried themselves. They were truly inspirational.

Because people with lots of money think that is all that speaks for them, they need to nothing else.

Sadly, public school teachers are just trying to get through their day being able to teach subject matter, they don't have time to make up for what parents can't or won't do at home.

I agree, Kids just copy the behavior of their parents and do what their parents taught them. Sadly, in public school, teachers are already exhausted by the kids that weren't taught manners by their parents plus they already have so much to do they can't do the job of parents. But I don't know if you realize this, but parents nowdays only get kids to please their parents or for the kids to take care of them when they will be old. 🤦‍♀️

My sister and I had so much fun teaching self-esteem&elegance in our studio for teenager girls. We were in our early twenties and parents loved us because the girls were so receptive to someone young. These days, for young teens it seems like “too old fashioned” and they don’t want to be different… they want to fit in.

I would love to see an "Etiquette 101" elective in high schools. I have always thought that if I won the lottery, I'd donate a large amount to high schools that wanted to develop an etiquette curriculum to offer an elective class for juniors and seniors.

You are only seeing a certain population. There are plenty of people who obey the law and behave in a cultured manner. As for faith and fear, I don't want to live in fear or have someone's faith forced on me. I have a cousin who is a social worker, and all she sees all day is a certain segment of the population, and that's how she thinks "everyone" is. I am always trying to get her to see goodness and beauty in things outside of what she sees every day. I was once a police officer and fell into the same trap. I only saw the worst of the worst every day and would have to remind myself every now and then that I was seeing a small percentage of society because that's all I was exposed to.

They also have no idea how the world actually works or operates. Their point of view is so narrow minded and one tracked, it almost impossible to have a conversation or debate with someone with that mindset.

Yep. People who share my values and personality type are usually very busy and at stage in their lives when their family and business/ career take so much of their time that I really cannot blame them for wanting to have the free time to just be on their own. I'm not one to demand anything of anyone,but I miss having more social contact, long conversations about different topics, learning things from people that are passionate about them but I get my "social fix" from work. I perhaps should seek out people more, but I'm afraid of rejection or sounding pushy and crass.

I think generations earlier like Millennials are more prone to narcicism. Boomers do not even know what narcicism is, they lack awareness. They developed it -- normalized it -- imprinted in their genetics -- and the strain went on, raising narcicists as well. Narcicism is from trauma, neglect, etc.. a lot of bad thinzzzzzzz. I used to work around some elderly women and men. Always got complements on my manners. A lot of them liked me to the point they went out of their way to complement me or just say hi.

Since we are aware of how it became detrimental to society we are the generation that must start searching for solutions. People just need to receive new imputs and they will come back to the good way.

Please stop using social media like instagram, tik tok, etc. and start reading more books on civilization, culture, geography, history, etc. Read great novels that will expand your knowledge of literature, rich vocabulary. Changes in society can begin with one person. Anna has been teaching and demonstrating good etiquette and culture. We can all do the same. If people criticize us, accept the criticism, don’t respond, go on living your beautiful life. Also, Jesus said “ do onto others as you would like them to do onto you.” We should have a Kindness Month where everyone exercises kindness, compassion and letting others be first in traffic, at airports, at hubs of transportation, at stores, etc.

You are onto something. I am from Generation Z (23y) and every single time I go outside, without fail, I dress like it’s my Sunday best. I did it originally for me, because when I look good I feel good, but I’ve noticed that I get a looot more looks in public now. People are so friendly, willing to help with menial tasks even if I didn’t ask, and a few more cool perks that come with, you guessed it, being a decent human being for once! It’s crazy how nice people become when you actually treat them with respect and also treat yourself with respect

Totally agree! The basis must be respect, morals and dignity. Add class and elegance if possible. Also, something that Europeans are more keen on, is the difference between public and private persona. Americans tend to blur the difference. Dress anyway you want inside the privacy of your home, but when in public, behave with good boundaries and dress with respect and dignity, for self and others.

Otherwise when europeans, for example, use 'culture' they're focusing on the past and its effetc on the present, it's something we cannot choose because it's handed by history to us and, if we mantain traditions or not, when we talk about culture we still don't mean what we're currently doing (or not doing anymore) but what characterized our ancestors. There's no 'culture' in trends, new habits, new language, the 'western' way of living, tecnologies that changes rapidly, etc. That's not what 'culture' is. Every new phase of a culture is build on the previous phase, for example: italian culture is what happened in ancient times, then we had romans, medieval period, renaissance, etc. In every era they too from other cultures, abandoned something, but keep building of what they had before naming it differently but keep it consistent. We literally build over ruins, americans instead they whipe out before rebuilding... this way they will never have a 'culture' as we mean it. Imagine modern egyptians dismantle pyramids and temples because they want to build something new (they will not, it's a crime against humanity) it' would be absurd, isn't it?

While it does have many international members, it is owned by Google, an American company, so the term culture may mean different things to different people. Typically in a work environment there is a certain culture that exists that one either adapts to or one should look for other employment. In Sociology and Psychology there is constant reference to culture and subcultures that exist in society. This is not just an American concept, this is also referenced in academic texts in the UK and other European countries. While the Italian culture may be interwoven with its tradition, culture can change even if tradition remains constant. The first time I went to Italy was in the late 1970's, shortly after the kidnapping and murder of the American Ambassador to Italy by German terrorists. At that time, police with Uzi's were on every corner in Rome. So, the existing culture of society at that time was quite fractured, but the tradition of the country remained in tact. Back then Italian society was known to be highly inefficient-- it took nearly 60 days to get a phone installed, the mail service functioned poorly, I was in Italy for 60 days and the post cards I sent home, arrived several weeks after my return home. Also, if one wanted to conduct business one would need to go to a business in the morning, since there was a good chance after the afternoon meal, the business may or may not be opened. From recent trips, I see this is no longer the case. In fact, much of what I have found to be "charming" about Italy is no longer there. People seem far more rushed in their daily lives, the overuse of cell phones in restaurants to my mind is alarming. Recently Italy has become "conservative" about allowing new residents (migrants and other nationalities) gain residency into their country. This is a departure from it's traditions, but the current culture is pretty strong no immigrants unless they are bringing in substantial wealth into the country. I could go on and on regarding conflicts with the EU regarding certain woke issues like Miss Italy not allowing non-biological women the right to participate like the Netherlands. So, while there is a European tradition there is a difference between different cultures within the European Union. In the Anglosphere (UK,US,CAN,AU,NZ), there is often an understanding or context in what certain terms mean. When one uses the word "cultured" with reference to human beings, it means that there is a refinement or that one is genteel. Typically but not exclusively it means that one has a familiarity and an appreciation for manners, the arts, the ability to converse well and appropriately.
