When I took the 11 plus in the 60`s, it didn`t matter how intelligent you were, because you were graded on your social class. If you lived on a council estate, & your father was a manual worker, the examiners would fail you because they didn`t want working class kids in grammar schools mixing with their so-called betters. I failed because of this reason, & it ruined my life chances forever.
They did the same to my Father In Law.. well worse actually, He passed it, but his family were coal miners round Castleford/Pontefract. His parents were called in and told he wouldnt fit in at Grammar school and it would be better for him not to go. So he didnt, left school spent a few years down the pit, then went and qualified as a plumber so did all right in the end but the saying "Grammar School is for everyone intelligent enough"is just a myth.
Why is this man making such a big deal over a test, that will only matter once in ur life, and won't affect any part of ur career if u don't make it affect it. Somebody needs to stop this man! I did it donkey years ago I didn't pass and boom I am a cardiologist and paediatrician with a master degree in a children's hospital?
What is this definition of education we are presented with here?-topping up with knowledge and facts ?or about curiosity ?Can this reasoning be fostered or is it a god- given `inborn talent `?Is the grammar education implied here at childhood at 11 plus a test that sets you up for life for a `good job `or developing the habit of being curious enough to self educate at 11 plus and also to 111 plus ? Are the `losers ` given a chance to re try?
And passing the 11 plus is no guarantee of actually getting a place in Grammar School. Grammars are very heavily subscribed. Spaces are very short as there has been no expansion to grammars or any schools, in the last decade. Of all children who do the 11 plus only about 5% get a place in grammar.
It means a lot to me to pass the 11+ exam. Like, I’ve been tutored for 2 years and my classmates said that I WILL pass because of the score I got on my practice SAT’s and even my teacher said that I will pass and yet I got 328.06 (66%). It’s below the minimum... At least I still have a chance though. But, I just don’t have hope in myself. I should have done better. I should have worked harder. I should of done anything that I could do to be better. Good luck to me though 😅☘️
I failed my 11+. Back when I did it there was no regular testing at school so it was the first exam I ever did. My sister passed so remember how much a big deal it was since we were a working class family and that i really wanted to pass although my mum was more concerned about the cost as we were one road inside the limit so didn’t qualify for a free bus pass. Probably burnt in my memory forty years on that my mum was relieved at not having the additional cost.
The Cut? Not well enough? Educat to "lead out"? Nerves ? Go to a doctor?Illness ? Most able at what? Eleven years of age ? what does this mean in child development ? 3;11/9;08 ; "Preparing for reasoning ?" At 10? How are all to be given a fair and identical test across social geographical domestic ethnic wealth resources and regional differences including gender ? If more pass over time then is the hurdle raised ?
O hell ... this reminds me of my childhood and teenage in India. Dont want my kids to go that way. what a horrible way of judging 11 year olds. And this guy is precisely the kind of person I would want my kid to stay away from. What a brain killer! What a fixed mindset guy and exam! He glorifies almost everything that is wrong about present day school education. John Dewey would be furious at all this!
Everyone expecting me too pass if I,do I’ll be the only one but I’m really scared/terrified if I fail wish me luck I’m finding out on Friday 13 how I’m feeling:😳😵😱🙄🙄😬😾😮😲😦😯
Feelings ? Really? -Interesting -Are feelings measured too at 11+ -?like in drama dance literature poetry history drama music? Have they any role in the test ?[feelings that is-of a young child with a test paper and pencil ]
+Subhan Ahmed I just did my gt and I will get my result on Tuesday and I have three subjects in sets of three. All of them are out of 140 , you need to get above 110 in every test. The subjects were verbal reasoning, non verbal reasoning and maths. My mom is going to buy me a swegways if I pass. I hope it goes well
Faiqa Nasir im already in year 7 but I think it helped that a did 2 practice papers every night for a week before my test. also are you offering me advice or do you want some
amythecatchild thanks for reply ..my mum is asking for advice ...I am in year 5 now and will take Woodford grammer school test next year . kindly give me some advice ...
Faiqa Nasir i was quite chill in the test, chew gum it makes you less stressed. in the bathroom my friend was crying she didn't answer all the questions, nor did i but when they say the last 5 minutes don't read the story in English just write what ever you knew about it. I couldn't read the ocean story so I just put facts. I also read wind in the willows it's very good. Get a tutor now, i only passed because of them helping me with maths
Sixty five years on from the test, first my curiosity lead me to reason then question , via improved mental arithmetic, as to my age and candidature on the day. So may I now add " Victoria per commodo dubio autem undecim minus " to my BMus ARCM PGCE 1st year OUMA?
