Eye colour is a curious thing, green eyes especially so. Why do a very small percentage of the global population (including me) have green eyes? In this episode of Knowledgica we dig into the biology, the genetics, the physics and the history of the green eye colour!

Me, too. I am also blond, and they have dark hair, but my skin is darker and I don't burn like they do...yet, I still have features of both of them. I have to say, however, I don't have their personalities at all. Maybe I am just recessed all around...

It's not necessarily what you're thinking. This video is not completely accurate. It's not actually outright impossible for parents with blue and brown eyes to have a child with green. It's just very rare.

I have green eyes and so did my mom. My dad has blue. My husband has blue eyes. And our 3 children also have blue eyes. I think my kids all have beautiful eyes. But sometimes I'm a little sad that I didn't get a green eyed child. You know, to continue the trend or something.

I have green eyes. When I was born, I had blue eyes. A few years later they turned to a medium brown color. In my teenage years, then turned to a hazel color. Ever since then, they have become greener and greener. Everyone in my family has brown eyes, except for my mother and myself.

Nahh it might be that your mother has the gene but brown dominates every other colour so even if she had blue, green eye genes they'd always be brown cause that gene is dominant.

Both my parents had green eyes and I’m the only one of their kids to have green eyes (one had hazel brown and two have blue), but we all have different greens! My husband’s parents had very dark brown eyes and aqua marine eyes, and he had the most unusual vivid warm green eyes. Our sun has green eyes, but again, all our eyes are different greens! Towards the end of his life, my husband became extremely light sensitive and wore hats and sunglasses. In his last year, his eyes turned to a crystal blue!

I was born with blue eyes, they where an aqua color until I was about 5. Then they turned a forest green color with gold in the middle now ( early 30's) they are a lighter green with blue undertones and and an orange cooper color in around the pupil. My mom has blue grey eyes and my dad dark brown .

@@supremes1964 I will not do a DNA for various reasons Both my patents and grandparents are Mexican On my mothers side she had a grandmother with blue eyes. No one else got them on her side. And on my other side they all have green eyes going back several generations Aside from true native Americans from Canada to Chile, the rest are all imports at one point in their ancestry for sure I was born with aqua blue eyes. But changed to green when I was 8 months In some cases depending on what I wear or the environment I’m in, they look blueish as in my profile shot here. That’s my eye 😀

mother/brown eyes, father/ ice blue eyes, me/green eyes. we all had curly blonde hair as babies, which then turned wavy, then turning very frizzy, curly, and dark brown in our teens. only my hair flashed ginger red just before turning brown. my son also has green eyes, and hair that is exactly like mine. his father has brown eyes.

I have 2-ring iris: the inner circle is khaki/light brown, the outer ring is emerald(!) green. People see brown. From my parents and judging from my siblings and cousins, my father's side might have a blue eye gene floating around. my mother's side phenotypically, looks dark brown.

My mother had blue eyes, my father had Hazel eyes. I had bright blue eyes until puberty. Then they turned green, sometimes grey, depending on the weather and what I'm wearing. My oldest grandaughter's eyes also went from blue to green/grey at puberty. My oldest son went from blue to grey in his teens.

I had blue eyes until I was 12. They turned green and are still, but are beginning to show subtle signs of turning back to blue, or so it seems. My dad AND my mom had the same thing happen. My dad is 81 and his eye have been blue again for about 10 years. My mom is 80 and hers have been blue again for about 5 years. I wonder how common that is.

Mine started turning green right around 12 too! Its something to do with the gene being like.. reactivated during puberty, I guess. Mine were blue, then grayish green, more gray than green, during my teen years, then got much greener the older I got. Now, in my 30s, I have light green eyes with a very very small amount of yellow around my iris. Wtf is happening to me lol

@@julianrandall3550 no, it’s just genetic. Sometimes the gene that gives the blue eyes that most babies are born with (and normally change to their actual color within the first 6 months to a year), stalls and is sort of reactivated around puberty. So essentially some people have their “baby blues” and then their natural color starts to shine through. But it’s a long process. It takes years for them to fully change, and can continue to change for the rest of your life.

Comment I just left elsewhere: "I have a theory that biological stressors (chemical and literal) during childhood development can have an effect on epigenetic expression, causing some otherwise blue-eyed people to develop more swarthily, thus resulting in green eyes." This really seems to fit in with your comment. Puberty can really flip around those epigenetic switches... thoughts?

Both my parents and sister have brown eye's and I ended up having green. My grandmother had green eyes which is how I got them. Even when your parents have brown or blue eyes they can still carry the green eye color in their genetics. Sometimes it skips a generation.

Almost everyone is born with green eyes and over time you start getting more melanin causing your true eye colour to show it's impossible for eye colour to change but coloured eyes can look different in different lighting

I've read that green eyes are what happened when blue and brown eyed peoples first met. We're the first interracial love children, lol. I got mine from my dad, my mom and brother have blue, married a blue, both kids are blue. I really hoped one would have green, but no. Maybe a grandkid someday. Meanwhile, I'll just keep my "witchy" eyes, and be glad I wasn't born 500 years ago.

I believe the blue eyed trait is more accurately traced to the Baltic sea but mixed in with neighboring Steppe people.

Real. Though, something tells me it existed in small emergent pockets around the north-eastern Mediterranean area in the mesolithic. I.e. somewhat more of an ancient origin. Utterly wiped out by 7000k years ago though. I could very well be wrong; it's just a hunch.

Eye color may also be influenced diet. My eyes were brown until recently and are now green. Eight years ago I switched my diet to low carb. So I conclude two possibilities. Either diet changed gene expression or had direct effect on eye color.

I have sectional hetrochromic eyes each iris is exactly half blue and half green. I inherited hetrochromic eyes from my Paternal Grandfather who had one brown eye and one blue eye. My Father had Hazel eyes and my Mother had blue eyes.

My sister in law has green eyes. Her mom my MIL has brown eyes. Her dad has blue eyes. How did that happen if it's not supposed to? Her dad is Her bio dad via genetic test.

My mom has brown eyes, my dad has blue eyes, and me and my three siblings all have green eyes! It doesn't seem like you have to have a green eyed parent to have green eyes.

My eyes are green as them from my mom , my father is blue eyes, his parents have blue and brown eyes but his brothers have brown eyes. My mom's parents have blue and green (with brown inside) eyes but her sister's have all blue eyes just my mom have green eyes. Like my oldest sister, and me. How hugh is the change to get a child with green eyes when the partner is brown eyes but his grandfather had green eyes?

I have green eyes, very green, could not be mistaken for blue or brown because it's a completely different colour. At least 80% of the time someone says they have green eyes you look and they are clearly blue, generally light blue, most of the rest have hazel. They are still pretty eyes just not green. Yes green is cool because it's rare but you can't call your blue eyes green and have it be true.

Interesting my grandfather had steel grey my gran dark green my mother green with brown specles my father and his family brown i got my mum's green eyes with some blue specled in

Green eyes are not a mixture. Genetically not possible.

Exactly. It's a completely different gene, on a different chromosome. Also, it's typically dominant over blue, yet it's much rarer than blue. No explanation there either. Essentially, nothing adds up. These mainstream "scientists" are just spouting BS explanations to avoid admitting that they don't know. On top of that, a scientific study conducted by a P.H.D. found that the most common eye color among alien abductees is green. Yet among the general population, it's BY FAR the least common compared to blue and brown.
