My mom always accused me of faking the discomfort. I got a tetanus shot in high school and I wouldn't move my arm the whole day because moving made it hurt. She yelled at me because I had to have somebody help me with my schoolwork because it was my dominant arm.

Matthew Lewis She does, but narcissists don't believe there is anything wrong with them and you'll never get them to accept help. My therapist spent a long time talking with me about that to help me come to terms with it.

ParaDoxxed 888 i got it about 24 hours ago and it didn’t hurt at ALL like seriously if your scared dont be. it barley feels like a pinch and it hasnt made me feel weird or sick yet but symptoms make kick in a day or 2 after you get the shot but so far its totally fine

The meningitis vaccine I got my senior year of high school to prepare me for dorm life in college was the worst one I've ever had. Getting the shot didn't actually hurt, but then I started to put my jacket back on. I felt a sharp pain at the infection site when I raised my arm to put it into the sleeve. It hurt for hours afterwards. But I didn't get meningitis, so it was totally worth it.

I got technically not a shot, but a needle as thick as a wooden pencils lead inserted into my left knee to remove 40 milliliters of fluid from it. It was the worst thing that I’ve ever felt as a needle. I hate needles in general, but this pain lasted for days after. And worst of all, all the fluid (plus more) came back within 24 hours. My dad is an ER physician, and he said to lay low off it for a while. However, the doctors have no clue how it got there, and nothing helps it. It’s currently in the state of a ton of fluid still (I got all that removed 2 weeks ago), but it’s still swollen. All I can say is that I won’t mind the flu shot anymore

Don't know if the doctor did something wrong but when I got water removed from my knee I didn't feel a thing, just a weird feeling when he was scraping around the bone with the needle

I felt the pain of fluid on the knee a couple months ago, but as the result of a test. I'd essentially flayed open the skin on my knee and they needed to check if I'd actually gotten into the joint. They injected 120cc of fluid into my knee before squeezing it back out, all while I still had an open wound. They only managed to squeeze out 80cc too, so I had a double whammy of 19 stitches and 40cc of fluid on the knee. After a couple days the fluid finally drained, but until then it was excruciating to have my leg in any position other than perfectly horizontal.

Maybe you have a cyst? Cysts will grow tissue back/fill up with liquid again if they're not removed alongside their membrane.

Got a shot of antibiotics in my hip not too long ago. It felt as if something was tearing apart inside and burned like a hot poker was inserted into my hip. Ahhh good times, good times.

Nurses give way more shots than doctors and so are better at it. It's like the last person you'd want to be your defender in a murder trial is a supreme justice. Even though they're vastly over qualified to do it, they don't have either the recent, practical or as much experience doing it.

For me it's really psychological. I used to be really afraid of needles, but as I've gotten older, I feel like I have more control over my thoughts so they don't bother me. As long as I don't have to look at it happening. I try to stay calm and I feel like my mind is really clear and at ease. It's really weird how it's happened, but I think the more shots I've gotten - the more training I've had, and the less scary or hurtful it is.

my needle phobia has gotten worse over time, they hurt more, and traumatize me even more. the last needle i had was on the top of my hand and it hurt so much, it felt like someone was shoving a barbed wire under my skin. it traumatized me so much i had nightmares for months, waking up crying and all that. fun times.

I'm usually not afraid of shots, so I wasn't nervous at all when I got a shot last year. However, I sneezed during it and she missed and injected diagonally through my flesh. I literally started screaming before I even realized what was happening and then burst into tears. I got a note to get out of PE because I literally couldn't move my arm for days.

Interestingly, when I got my TDAP injection, the nurse specifically mentioned that of the shot is "cold" when injected, it hurts a lot more as muscles around the injection site tense and cramp up due to the sudden flow of below room temp liquid. And indeed she warmed the inject fluid up slightly before injecting it and there was almost no deep muscle pain. Neat

Speaking from experience, cold injections definitely hurt more than warm ones! If I did my humira shot right after taking it out of the fridge it was always soooo much more painful than if I’d let it come to room temperature.

I am 17 and not afraid to say that I freak out over getting a shot. I don't know why: I have high pain tolerance but just seeing the needle get closer and closer to my arm makes my fight or flight response flare up so hard.

A few weeks ago I visited the doctor with my flu. I had high fewer and was really tired, so she gave me a shot to bring my temperature down. As soon as it went in I felt the pain radiating from the spot, I tried to get up but the world went dark, I almost fell, and after they helped me sit down I immediately fell asleep for a few seconds. Vasovagal syncope is no joke.

I just had my very first Tetanus vaccine and I'm 30. I was expecting my jab to hurt a hell lot, but it didn't hurt at all. I wondered why my other vaccines hurt but this one didn't. I thought maybe it might be because of the nurse's skill and the vaccines themselves. Glad I watched this so I know why some hurt and others don't. :) thank you!

Most painful injection I ever had was Gravol via IV. The vein on my arm from my hand up past my elbow felt like it was on fire...until they put the morphine thru the same vein, and then I didn't really care if I was actually on fire.

I have to (Anecdotally) confirm that deep tissue shots don't hurt anything like giving blood or shots of that sort. I've had cortisone shots and given blood, and the ones where I gave blood hurt a lot more than the cortisone shots that were deep in my shoulder. They did actually numb the area around the cortisone shot first, though, so maybe that's the real difference.

I got three shots today, on both shoulder and one on my thigh. The shot on the thigh hurts so bad. It’s not the needle, it’s the medicine making it feel like a bruise. It’s like pressing on a bruise. The typhoid shot I got in the military was excruciating. My arm muscles cramped for over a week. Then two weeks after I felt better, I had to get another one.

When I was 14 I had Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a very rare type of reaction. I had to have steroid and antihistamine shots. I’m very used to needles and I was only half conscious so I thought it would be fine but the steroid shot was easily the most painful shot I’ve ever experienced

My last couple of shots were done by full-on pharmacists, and one even had me sitting down for about ten minutes right there at the pharmacy until both of us were sure there were no side effects, before I left. I'm sure they were trained on what to do if things did go wrong.

I’m not afraid of shots or anything but I came into urgent care last night for an injury and they gave me a medium size shot which wasn’t a big deal but my arm has been hurting more then my leg now 😂😂

I was 9, and they had to chase me around the exam room for a tetanus shot. I had a flu shot in Sept of 2020, and it was nothing compared to the pneumonia shot I got today. (and please remember...pneumonia and bleach don't mix.😁🤣😣)

I wonder if SciShow could possibly explain why doctors say that the results of a spinal tap won't hurt for over a week, but sometimes it hurts for over 3 weeks. (I'm absolutely in the 3 week camp. I figure either they tapped too much fluid or my body sucks at rejuvenating spinal fluid. Either way, I wonder if there's reputable science about it.)

Hex Isme I refuse to have any more of them done because the last time, I ended up in the A&E in severe pain with a bruise half the size of my back on, well, my lower back. The triage nurse took a picture of the bruise, said 'oh, that's not supposed to happen' and then I was stuck SITTING in the waiting room for over 6 hours, on and off pleading with the office nurse to find me some way to lay down, and get painkillers or something. I got absolutely nowhere, so in tears, I dragged myself home (hubby drove me) and I was out of action for a few months after. They had the cheek to try and bill me for 'non appearance' until hubby threatened to sue them over their treatment (or lack thereof) of me. Since then, I have not allowed them to even think of it. I never even got an apology out of them. 😣 I also don't do shots very well. Even not looking doesn't help. It still hurts, no matter what it's for. 😔

KM E I don't think I ended up with a bruise, but I definitely ended up with massive headaches when sitting up for long, or even just... defecating. I'd get massive headaches if I put any kind of pressure on my lower spine. I ended up having to recline for over 3 weeks... which isn't as great as it sounds. Sitting up after a spinal tap is absolutely insanely painful. I probably would've laid down on the floor, if I'd been in your position. :(

As a person who got allergy shots for most of my childhood, I am a shot connoisseur. I received the same personalized shot from the same batch up to 5 times a week for months. Some were painful, some were easy. The difference? The nurse who administered the shot. One nurse was absolutely painless every time. Another nurse I dreaded, hers felt like getting knuckle-punched for hours afterward. They were both pleasant and friendly and the "bad" nurse had the same technique as the "good" nurse. Once I got up the nerve to mention this, the "bad" nurse volunteered to take pointers from the other, but nothing changed. The one thing that was different about them was that the "bad" nurse was 5'11" and the "good" nurse was 5'3". Standing on a stool (we tried it) changed nothing, either. Up until the day I stopped her shots hurt like hell and I just accepted that.

It may seem odd, but my most painful shot was a numbing shot from a dentist. The area was inflamed to begin and having a needle jammed into it hurt like crazy. Luckily the pain didn't last long because the numbing agent kicked in.

AboboKing shots in the gums are awful. I hate those. I once had to get a shot in my heel. I swear that needle was over 3” long. I completely freaked out when I saw it.

Same. I had to get an anaesthetic injected into my gums to have 3 teeth pulled out before I got braces, and I remember the injection being far worse than actually having the teeth pulled.

i think other than tetanis and HPV, the worst shot i've ever had was the depo shot (injected birth control) which hurts for like 3 days after the shot. honestly tho, a sore arm every 3 months is so worth not getting a period

I got my third hpv vaccination a couple years ago. My first two rounds went fine but for some reason this last time I had a sudden reaction and it felt like ice and fire were both shooting up my arm. A few seconds after the injection I had already passed out and I woke up to the nurse calling for help. I am not sure why I suddenly had a reaction because again, I didn't have anything happen the first two times. Any thoughts?

I've had many shots, and none of them was anymore than a small pinch. There was no pain after, and no redness. Even the ones that I was warned could be quite painful.

I have chronic health issues and I've been stuck with a LOT of needles for vaccines, blood draws, IVs, and medicine. In addition to needle size, the temperature of the liquid in the shot being administered can also affect both swelling/absorption and pain, as well as the length of time it's been inserted. Worst needle experiences are my weekly medicine and my spinal tap.

I use a one inch, 25 gauge needle to inject into my front thighs. I've been giving myself these injections for more than a year and I've learned some things about the nature of my muscles. Muscle is not homogeneous all through. There are layers made up of blood vessels, large and small as well as what feels like connective tissue. I still fantasize hitting bone, but it's never happened. The larger vessels "resist" the needles penetration. Some bleed back to the surface skin. But I just pause for a few seconds and let everything relax. I hit a good one the other day and I actually jerked the needle out. Had to start over. Capillaries don't bleed back. The nurse educator showed me how to do a quick plunge to get the needle in. BUT I CAN'T DO IT, hahaha. I have to use the slow method and that's when I noticed the differences in resistance down to the point that it is fully injected. It works for me. The fluid injected doesn't cause any pain. It's the process of injection that causes my mini-trauma experience. hahaha.

Needle size does infact play a large part in pain. Your correct on all the other points but you kinda brushed needle size off. I've had allot more needle sticks then the avg person. One time a had a shot with a needle that literally looked like a stand of hair and if I had not watched the intersection I wouldn't have known I had a shot at all I literally felt nothing. I've also had a shot that looked like the needle tip was the size of a pencil and I don't mean the pencil tip. Cool video though.

I got a shot in my butt when I got to basic. They called it the peanut butter shot and it felt like someone punched me hard as they could right in the cheek. Some of the guys couldn’t sit/walk right for a couple days. One guy complained for around a week.

Logan Stack yeah, it's still an intramuscular injection but with a much longer needle. Usually an inch to an inch and half needle will be used. The injection itself shouldn't hurt as long as the person giving the injection puts a hard grip on the area.

Sounds like you got a Tetanus shot. It's notorious for being that painful, done on the rear end cheeks so it has more muscle and the fluid injected is really thick or viscous. When it's that thick it has no where to go and breaks open blood vessels and puts pressure on the muscle cells and nerves. Sometimes the nurse will push down and rub hard on the injection site to help spread it out quickly. If so, it won't hurt so bad for so long.

I didn't know that about Adjuvants. I always assumed that subcutaneous injections just had more nerve endings nearby and intramuscular injections stayed sore longer because the shot has a greater volume of fluid and therefore displaces more tissue.

I got my depo provera shot in my arm for years, and it hurt like crap every time and was sore for days. Then I switched ob/gyns. The new nurse was horrified that I had ever had it in my arm. She put it my buttcheek and I didn't feel it going in and I didn't feel it at all after. Life-changing, lol

I recently took a shot. Mt classmates that had taken it before me jokingly said that it was extremely painful. I got it suspecting quite a lot of pain, but somewhat optimistic, knowing that it couldn’t be worse than cramps, which I’ve learned to live with. Upon getting it, it didn’t hurt and I realised my classmates were joking, but I literally could not feel anything, which left me quite concerned.

I got a tetanus shot a meningitis shot and a HPV shot and shockingly the tetanus one didn't hurt the meningitis hurt little bit but when I got the HPV 1 it hurts so bad why is that so?
