@@garrett3698 the command "present arms" is normally associated with a collection of soldiers, ie a platoon company or battalion who will all be carrying weapons, this comand is preceded by "general" or "royal salute" depending on who is being saluted. Individual soldiers not carrying firearms,ie officers, or senior nco's will salute palm forward, as they would not be presenting arms, just saluting. Hence the command "general salute, present arms", anyone on parade without a fire arm "general salute" with a fire arm "present arms". This is of course specific to the British army, don't know what other countries does.

In Korea, we salute like the US, but we have a standard "Salute cry" (Similar to battle cry) of "ChungSong" (충성 meaning "I will be loyal to my military") There are variations between branches or even units. Marine Corps' cry is "Phill Sung" (필승, roughly translate to "We will be victorious all the time"), and the 3rd Infantry Division, or White Skull division's cry is "Baek Goll" (백골 literally meaning White Skull in Chinese method)

@@jimmy2k4o We lost the War of the French Revolution, the Wars of the Third, Fourth and Fifth Coalitions and only won the Sixth because of Napoleon's Russian blunder. We also lost the Hundred Years War and all the English lands in France, creating the modern island kingdom of England. For every small war we won, we lost another. We also let ourselves be surrounded by the Nazis and fled the continent, leaving behind all of our tanks and heavy equipment and our allies to fight alone while we cowered behind the Channel with Churchill sending the British ambassador in Washington to give the Americans all headaches begging for support. We stood against them because the Germans had no means of crossing the Channel and effecting an invasion. All simulations of German invasion using river barges to transport troops across the Channel would have seen them destroyed by the RAF and Royal Navy; and that's if they weren't swamped by the Channel itself. If you don't respect your enemies, you can't boast about besting them.

The Canadian Army and the Royal Canadian Air Force saluted the same way as the British until 1968. At that time a new Drill Manual was issued for the unified Canadian Armed Forces, along with the CF green Hellyer uniform for all -- yuck. In the mid 1980s, the three services went back to separate uniforms, with a common rank insignia. In this decade, the Canadian Army reverted to the traditional (i.e. British Army) officer rank insignia (except for general officers). Who knows? Perhaps the Canadian Army will revert to the British Army-style of salute in future. I certainly hope so, but then I am a Brit who served for 29 years in the Canadian Army. D.A. The U.S. Army used to follow the "palm-out" style of hand salute. 1861 Revised Regulations for the Army of the United States Article XXIX 256. When a soldier without arms, or with side arms only, meets an officer, he is to raise his hand to the right side of the visor of his cap, *palm to the front*, elbow raised as high as the shoulder, looking at the same time in a respectful and soldier-like manner at the officer, who will return the compliment thus offered. (Identical description in the 1863 Confederate Regulations, Article XXVIII, 243.) The switch to "palm-down" was gradual, becoming increasingly common during the Indian Wars, and almost universal by the Spanish-American War. The Army Drill and Ceremony manual of 1914 has an illustration using "palm-down", and the 1920 version leaves no doubt that the transition had become complete and official.

Japan does the same salute as the U.K. (Navy) and the U.S. formerly in all imperial branches, but when it changed into the Self Defence Forces, the angle of the salutes differs in the branches; Maritime (Navy) regulated salute with the 45 degrees angle under the armpit, unlike the Ground (Army) and the Air (Air Force) which hired the typical U.S./U.K 90 degrees angled palm down salute. This is due to the narrowness inside the ship, and sometimes, in the corridor, it might be admitted to not salute but instead clear the way to the superior.

The Salute in UK, came from medieval times when Military Knights (ALL upper Class nobility), usually on horse back & wearing FULL body armour including helmets / face visors, would raise the front plate so they could be recognised by the King (head of Country / armed forces), in a 'face to face' meeting (the King does not speak to a 'face Plate' - besides it is an act of civility not to hide behind a mask), - that's why (with majority being right handed), the salute is always taken in that fashion - of lifting the face visor - and holding it up, while in conversation or just 'being noticed' - before dropping the visor (and therefore being fully ready for immediate battle). It has 'evolved' over the years into the variations we know today.
@philldavies7940
@philldavies7940 3 года назад
Thats one theory, but so what if you raised your visor, most people still wouldn't recognise you unless at very close range. Most mounted knights would have had some form of recognition anyway, their coat of arms exhibited on their shields or horse etc. also the armoured knight was obsolete on the battlefield well before saluting caught on. Probably more to do with lifting your hat as mark of respect, which evolved into touching the forehead.

@AyeNaeBother Wehrmacht used the normal salute until 1944. By 20 July onwards they had to use the Hitler salute or risk being classed as a conspirator.

In my country(India),our soilders salute as same the British soldiers except the our air force salute at a 45 degree angle and say,'Jai Hind'.The word 'Jai Hind' is used during the salute because it means hail India and it was made by the founder of Indian National Army, Subash Chandra Bose.

I once saw a movie on tv that at first glimpse looked like it was about the British navy in World War II. The uniforms looked similar, the men's faces looked similar, and their understated way of addressing the situation looked British. Then I actually tried to hear what they were saying. I was shocked when I couldn't understand a single word they were saying. It was Swedish movie about the Swedish Navy.

Not exactly. It's a memory of a polish soldier who losts a half of his hand in a battle, but fulfilled his orders saluted his superior with the wounded hand and died after it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-finger_salute

British 8th army Chief, Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery, on visiting New Zealand troops in North Africa during WW2. Said to their divisional commander, Lieutenant General Bernard Freyberg. "I notice your soldiers don't salute a lot". To which General Freyberg replied. "Yes, but if you wave to them, they will wave back". I think it was an observation about the slightly more casual manner of the Australian and New Zealand (ANZAC) armies.

Poland : responsible for the greatest squadron during the battle of Britain, 303 squadron . Home of the best royal artillery company in WWII and some of the best paratroopers and SAS officers too. The story of Private Wojtek should be taught in British schools to show how the Polish people embrace life and others .

In Austria everybody salutes differently and in some barracks you get weird looks if you do it, whereas in others it is obligatory everytime you see someone of higher rank. Especially officers are usually memed about because they salute in really dumb looking ways but everybody is scared of telling them. God protect our country, because we can't
