Did someone try and shorten his name? I hate it when people will either abbreviate a name because they can't be bothered spending a little time learning how to pronounce their names. My Great grandfather had a long Māori last name (Te Routaurerewa) which he changed to Rowe because people constantly butchered the name with mispronounciation
