I don’t use a vest or pad. Only time I use a chair is in a blind and it has to be quiet. I only use a hunting fanny pack which is quiet from Red Head that only cost me 30 bucks and it works very well! I also found that no matter what camo you have to break up your pattern, sitting very still and quiet always works even if your wearing a neon colored tuxedo. I get turkeys running across me and right next to me in my work clothes smelling like oil and gas!

Lol ! Had a bird cross the street and come in quiet behind me but I had given up on him and decided to turn around and he was standing there looking at me then the decoy then back at me ! He ducked behind a log and when I brought the gun up I saw him hauling down the hillside like a running back lol ! Skunked again lol !

Setup is very very important…try to position yourself where he is in range when he becomes visible…patience is extremely important…I carry a small folding stool to sit on…I can’t sit on the ground at my age and stage…I have had many come in silent only to be busted when I decide to move…got a nice one 4 days ago, classic we texted back and forth…I laid down my box call when he was about 100 yards out…I was behind a huge poplar from him…he started skirting to the right and when he cleared the edge of the poplar 💥 awesome hunt!

I just ended my first season. I was on a couple different gobblers but wish I would have educated myself on calling techniques because I didn’t know to stop calling. Unfortunately wasn’t ever able to pull one in close enough to fill the tag but gained a great deal of learning experience in the process.

Just started my first Turkey season also and this past Sunday I had a massive Tom about 15’ away, without decoys or calls, I just knew turkeys pass through this area from the previous December Whitetail hunt. I drew on him but my Sig H4 Red dot was dead. It died not even 20min after checking the brightness setting and of course I forgot to pack a spare. With all the commotion and frantically trying to see if I just needed to turn it on because shake awake failed or the battery cap was loose, the massive Tom disappeared into the thick woods at 11pm, hunt over. All in all it was an absolute blast and I learned a lot. Haha Good luck out there brother!

I’ve been hunting turkeys 40 years. You made some good points but after many vests I found the kickstand a hindrance, same with the thick pad. My latest vest have both, the stand came off after one hunt and I sit without the pad because it just gets in the wa due to how thick it is.
@InformedOutdoors

That’s a good point. If you don’t take the time to clip the seat up when you’re going to move it becomes annoying.

This is great advice, earlier this week, I started off the morning bad spooking a gobbler, spent some time walking and thinking about my next set up. I set up in an area where the turkey usually travel through in the afternoon and I was about to give up after not hearing anything. I could see hens off to themselves about 150 yards away, and then I started hearing gobbling coming from across the ridge in front of me. The gobbler had separated from the hens it was around that morning and after an hour of careful calling, it came on in and met its fate. What was really neat was listening to the other hens yelping. They didn't sit there and yelp and call for 10 or 15 seconds like we tend to do. I might have heard three or four subtle yelps and that's it. A few short yelps, then they walked past me and on down the field, kinda like a live decoy. My decoys stopped the gobbler long enough for a shot at least

I would just suggest loading up everything the night before the hunt. Anything you're gonna need goes in a bag or at least in the car. I fill my hand tube up the night before also besides my phone. But we all forget stuff here and there even if we think we had everything. With turkeys though. Even if I forget a thing or two it's not hard. All you need is a call a seat and your gun/bow. Sometimes we bring a lot more than we are gonna need because we get into our head a bunch of scenarios instead of just keeping it simple and using woodsman skills

Many hunters I've interacted with are about as smart as their target species. I kid you not I've had deer, squirrels, turkey, and raccoons follow me around within forty yards when I'm just walking around checking cameras. Why? Because I'm obviously not failing at sneaking through the woods like a predator trying to score a meal. I'm relaxed, slow, and not acting funny. They're clearly curious about what I am and up to and don't present a threat. And the guys who always crawl around like they're a jaguar getting ready to pounce snapping their heads around like they're short on a fix every two seconds always tell me I'm lying because everything in the woods sees and hears them trying to woodland ninja as they helicopter their equipment around like they're trying take off during crunch time😂 Sit still, shut your yap, use your ears before your eyes, and exercise basic patience. If deer aren't walking right past you, squirrels aren't running across you, and turkeys aren't walking up to you you're moving too much and being too noisy. I swear, if you're doing it right you barely need to move and your biggest enemy is fighting the oncoming nap lurking around you.

If I walked into my grandfathers milk barn while he was milkin, and told him I disregarded someone solely because of the shape of the bill on their hat, I’d never make it out without a boot in my backside. Be a man.
