Why Do We Have Such Crooked Teeth?

A lot of humans need or want braces to fix their crooked teeth, but why do you never see a dog walking down the street with headgear? Our ancient ancestors and mac and cheese may be to blame!
Correction: Even though hyraxes look similar to rodents, they're actually in the order Hyracoidea, not Rodentia! They're more closely related to elephants and manatees than to mice and guinea pigs.

+Aaron How would that work? Wouldn't the individuals of which the dicks belonged to bump in to each other before they could even get to the mouth simultaneously? I mean let's say that they didn't go at it from a direct parallel angle, and instead came in curved from both sides: Even if the mouth was big enough, the entire throat would have to be shaped as a funnel for them to go deep. I have never seen such a remarkable sight as a funnel shaped throat. Perhaps with only one penis and a dildo (Or antoher long shaped object) It could be done, but two dicks?
@nice3333333333
@nice3333333333 7 лет назад
+Simon -PFL Oh shit! I just figured it out! Alright here is what we'll do: One man will lay on the ground on his back with his entire lower part lifted up in the air. His crotch will be high enough up, that the penis will be looking directly horizontal. Another man standing with bended knees will sit on the man on the ground's buttom part. Their legs scissored, balls touching balls. All their four thighs shall be pressed hard enough together, that both their dicks can be looking in the same horizontal angle. Another person, crawling over the man on the ground, can then pierce themself in the mouth with both dicks parallel, and thus deep throat. Okay let's do this! Who is in?

I had to only consume liquids for a month following a surgery, it wasn't pretty, I lost 40 lbs (and I wasn't overweight or anything before the surgery). I don't know if you'd get adequate nutrition if you raised a child on an all liquid diet.
@MA-vu6zo

If you were raised on it you probably would never be allowed to have solid food, your teeth would be useless making them drop out from having nothing to gnaw on (I can't think) and if they didn't drop out from the uselessness then they'd probably rot away from malnutrition.

My sister was tube fed all her life because her ability to swallow is limited to only liquids, and even then it's a bit perilous because her throat muscles don't have much coordination (She has to concentrate on swallowing otherwise she can easily swallow the wrong way). As a result she doesn't chew much at all. The only _food_ she can eat is ice cream because it's nice and soft. Her jaw is _very_ tiny. It's so small that she had to have 11 teeth pulled (10 at once and the last one later) in order to get braces and straighten her adult teeth. Though it could be combination of her not chewing and her condition called *Congenital Varicella Syndrome* which is caused by an expecting mother having the Chicken Pox when pregnant.

Actually a lot of indigenous people have naturally straight teeth, even some remote tribes in africa a lot of them surprisingly have very straight teeth. IDK what it is about the more "advanced" people that makes our teeth grow in crooked most of the time
@jarv7441
@jarv7441 7 лет назад
+suckittomcat maybe you should do some research before spouting bullshit, take one look at all the outreach programs, tax exemptions and other benefits that the government has running for indigenous Australians, so that they have a better chance of getting higher paying jobs and a healthy lifestyle. That's not to say that they don't have problems, there are a large amount of destitute indigenous communities, but that's mostly caused by the destruction of their culture that was caused by our previous mistakes. But to say that they have been relegated to third class citizens is just plain wrong, they have all the same rights as normal citizens (plus a few more) because they are normal citizens.

Personally, I never heard of dental braces until I came to America back in my thirties (I’ll turn 67 next month), where it seems every kid has to suffer through them. I grew up in a European country, lived in several more of them and traveled extensively throughout much of the European continent. I was very surprised that braces have been around for centuries. Which made me wonder why so few kids in Europe needed them that I did not even know of their existence but so many American kids got them. And it finally dawned on me that it is because health and dental care is a big for-profit business in America. So, clearly US dentists and orthodontists tell parents their kids need braces for the same reason US pediatricians used to tell parents their boys needed to be genitally mutilated, that is, to get more money.

Yea, I have really crooked teeth, but i would never to the atrosious things that people i know do to "FIX" they teeth when its obvious its bone deformation thats the problem, like having 4 heathty teeth removed - that should be punishable because its basically mutilation.
@xxkittyscratch496xx
@xxkittyscratch496xx 7 лет назад
+Wetpig If by "removing four healthy teeth" you are referring to people having their wisdom teeth removed, there actually IS a good reason for that. Wisdom teeth are located in the very back of the mouth, and while not everyone is born with them, those that are tend to develop intense jaw pain around their mid-teens, when the wisdom teeth start to come in. The reason they don't come in during childhood, and why they hurt, is because they're evolutionary leftovers from our ancestors who had much larger jaws and smaller skulls. With the way our jaws are shaped now, emerging wisdom teeth are essentially trying to jam themselves into an already-full space, and can even put pressure on the bone, so leaving them in there can lead to severe dental problems and make it hard to eat. So, even though they might be "four perfectly healthy teeth", the trouble they cause just being there is far worse than the "mutilation" of pulling them out.
@WetPig
@WetPig 7 лет назад
I wasnt refering to them.I was talking about premolar and BICUSPID extraction, the ladder of which i have no idea why anyone would do. The problem with wisdom teeth is that there just isnt enough space in the jaw, you should be widening the jaw during childhood, heck you could do it even as an adult to combat this, but if you have problems with wisdom teeth during adulthood you would have removed them already. About the bicuspid thing, they dont look aesthetic and unless you have a problem with them there is absolutely no reason to remove them. And if you are having Severe tooth pain that is chronic, well yea its a good idea to check whats going on and remove it if necessary.

Its not solely agriculture; they are plenty of people born with straight teeth in our generation. If you look at Weston A. Prices research on dental caries there were civilizations less than 100 years ago with jaws wide enough to accommodate teeth. The singer Pia Mia is a good example of someone with this jaw. How can you say mastication has anything to do with bone and jaw development when babies were breastfed and our ancestors, at least during development periods, did not eat foods that required any more chewing now. I know for certain being breast fed over formula fed plays a huge factor. You can also argue from that point of view that nutrient consumption of the mother during pre natal periods is important. Nutrient intake during early childhood into teenage years also plays a role but not nearly as much as the former.

@WetPig
@WetPig 7 лет назад
Ictus You are wrong, having gaps in your front teeth mean you will be exerting more force on each tooth because they are not connected, while having them on the back means you basically don't need cleaning and if the teeth are positioned correctly you will have no problem eating.Look at ancient human skulls(like 10000 years ago), and you will see intermolar width in the 40-50mm range, while the modern norm is 30 ish mm.They had small gaps in their back teeth and they lived normal lives.Gaps themselves don't cause harm, but they are frequently accompanied by bite problems if there are any gaps at all.This is due to are our modern life style, 150 years ago only about 5% of all people had crooked teeth.

I wonder about what might be the reason for the opposite problem. I used to have an over bite, and the teeth in my upper jaw were quite spaced apart. I had headgear and retainers to fix the overbite, and braces to bring my teeth closer together. My dad was born with the same thing too. I suppose overbites and underbites are a thing that we can observe in other species. I've seen dogs with underbites and such. But I wonder if it's also caused by something evolutionary about humans or if it's just something that happens across (at least mammalian) species.

I was born with straight teeth. I heard somewhere a cause could be due to breathing through mouth vs nose. In saying that, I’ve picked my nose my whole life to the point where I consider myself a pro as I am removing the dry mucus “crust”, and being careful not to create scabs or accidently breaking skin causing nose bleeds. I believe that nose picking could be a factor to straight teeth and was wondering if any of natural straight teeth people do the same? I make sure I wash my hands before and after picking, I even twist my fingers in a left to right motion to get all the snot film out just like when you rub your hands together to create friction to remove dead skin. Pretty grose, I know and for those worried about big nostrils, yeah you could say I have larger nostrils than most people but it still looks normal
@loahnuh

Or how about we stop worrying so damn much about our crooked teeth and only use braces when there is a clear and present medical reason to do so. A little overcrowding isn't going to kill you, if you brush properly and get regular check-ups, and a slightly misaligned bite may only cause superficial damage to your teeth, if at all. FFS we often cause more pain and suffering to ourselves trying to fix non-issues for the sake of vanity; just look at the teeth whitening industry. Zero medical benefits, and risk of increased sensitivity or root damage to healthy teeth, all for the sake of bleaching our dentin, which is supposed to be slightly yellow, that's its natural color. It's time we all pulled our heads out of the collective asshole of cosmetic dentistry advertisers constantly negging us and pick the shit out of our probably healthy, slightly crooked, teeth.

Crooked teeth can increase the risk of cavities and such because it’s hard brushing the nooks and crannies. Crooked teeth can also cause speech problems sometimes. Crooked teeth can also cause jaw issues.

I had to get braces because when i bit down my bottom teeth scraped up the back of my top teeth and if i didn’t get braces and fix my bite it would have eventually scraped my teeth beyond repair. Also my teeth never fully formed i have very short teeth and the developmental ridges never went away as well as my canines protruded so far my gums were pressed white. And a tooth on the bottom was completely sideways and sharp and would cut my tongue a lot. Fun fact the metal used for the wire in braces was made by nasa and when at body temp it naturally wants to go back to its original shape. So you may not have medical problems now from your teeth but you probably will in the future. It takes time i don’t see the harm in getting braces even if you don’t actually need them. My dad had an extra front tooth that he had pulled. My sisters 2 center bottom teeth never formed adult teeth so baby teeth sat there and rotted and caused her pain until she was 20 and got braces to close the gap so she could bite down on food

Jaws form teeth size are just regulated by different genes, so sometimes we inherit broad jaw and narrow teeth, or broad teeth and narrow jaws and need bracers in both cases. Sadly bracers cost a crapp tonn of money and need itself comes from being born this way.

Why do some people have tooth gaps?
@thoryan946
@thoryan946 7 лет назад
So you have room to grow wisdom teeth. At least that's the case for me and a couple of my friends. My family was poor as shit and couldn't afford a full braces treatment for me, so I only had braces for 7 months. It fixed a lot of my teeth, but I still have the gap between my two front teeth. My friend had his teeth completely shut. 10 years later after our wisdom teeth grow, my gap is almost gone, and his teeth are crooked and lap over each other now. This isn't scientific, but I just find it funny how things turned out.
7 лет назад
@thoryan94 I have a similar anecdote. I used to be able to fit a toothpick between my upper front teeth, but now there isn't a slightest gap. I never had any bracers.

I think it's also just plain genetics too. As a kid growing up, I never needed braces and neither did my brother. My mom always claimed the people on her side of the family have "teeth like Denzel." lol My dad's side tend to have that gap between the front two, but thankfully my brother and I don't have that. My teeth are next to perfect besides a canine that grew in kinda facing the wrong way, and my slight buck front teeth. :B I did recently have my bottom wisdoms removed, though only because the dentist insisted to, not that they hurt at all yet. My brother had his removed because they were causing him severe pain, but my mom still has them and is just fine so I can't help but wonder if I wasted my money...
@janikb3538

Strawberries777 ‪‪ Genetics could play a role but it’s a very slim chance. Genetics can’t explain the sudden skyrocketing rates of people needing braces now when hundreds of years ago humans had straight teeth.

Guys, you are great and I learn a lot with you, but you called a hyrax a rodent; hyraxes are more closely related to elephants than they are to rodents. I guess you mean "rodent-like". It could be a small problem, but this is a science channel, so try to not make those mistakes again, please.

Another possible reason proposed by Weston Price was the fact that these hunter-gatherer cultures' diet was high enough in calcium, phosphorus, and fat-soluble vitamins that their jaws could develop properly. After agriculture we didn't get enough of these nutrients to form the jaw correctly. The "hardness" factor could just as easily be the case too. I'd like to see a comparison study. I have a feeling it's a combination of both.

There is a breakthrough in orthodontics called Orthotropics, the Man behind it Dr Mike Mew has some very convincing evidence that a big factor in crowded teeth and under developed jaws may be due to not only a soft diet but also the position of the tongue in the mouth and swallowing habits as well as mouth breathing. I would LOVE to see Sci show do something with him hes an amazing guy.

I'm surprised there was no mention of wisdom teeth, and how a small percentage of the population has just stopped growing them in the first place. From what I understand, that's linked to the same food changes as the jaw size and is possibly related to epigenetics.

I have Ehlers-Danlos, which gave me a narrow high arched palate and small lower jaw. Ehlers-Danlos is genetic. My teeth were so crowded that I had both upper and lower jaws widened when I was 10-13. It hurt. Then I wore braces and headgear for four more years. Not a pretty look in high school. Now my teeth look straight but because of very deep molar surfaces most of them are broken and root canals now. Deep teeth groves are from Ehlers-Danlos too. My teeth were filled with amalgam after they got cavities since there was no sealants back then. That is why they are broken now. Yay teeth.

I looove mac'n'cheese too. But I have a noob question. When we come across these buried fossils, do we assume that their size is indicative of the actual size of the organism when it was alive or do we factor in such processes as erosion and pressure-related compression that would make the bones and teeth smaller, by a certain factor, over time?
