Ok, so I have to recommend another version, probably not very well known in the Anglosphere. It’s “Tři oříšky pro Popelku“/ „Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel“ (something like “three hazelnuts for cindarella”), a ČSSR-/GDR-coproduction from 1973. It’s based on a version of Božena Němcová itself based on the Grimm version. It has amazing costumes and the heroine actually does some girl boss shit, like cross-dressing and shooting a crossbow really good. - The film is super popular in Germany, it’ll get shown on TV every Christmas. Also, thank you for reminding me of the Lotte Reiniger version. I remember seeing that in a film museum as a child and I was totally fascinated by the beautiful cut-out animation style.

Amazing video essay and editing! And I like how you changed the sound during quotations. Subscribed. Saw you on F the Algorithm and had to immediately hop over here to watch the rest of this amazing Cinderella video. Kudos!

I'm gonna go on a tangent here, cause I'm a sucker for fairytales: Ever After is, to me, one of the most realistic portrayals of Cinderella. And when I say realistic, I mean no magic, no talking mice, just real life. This version's Cinderella is actually named Danielle and the setting takes place in the Renaissance Era. I also found some books following the Cinderella: Rags to Riches formula. One of books being called Rough-Faced Girl, an Algonquin Indian version of Cinderella who earns the love of the Invisible Being. Another book is called Yeh-Shin, one of the many versions of Cinderella from China. This was also adapted into film, but it's animation doesn't quite she well. And finally, I did want to mention a song that I recently listened to about Cinderella. Not necessarily about the fairytale, but the idea of dressing up as Cinderella and becoming someone else. That song is called, "I wanna be a girl" by Mafumafu, who wrote this I think, in response to many fans mistaking him for a girl because of his voice. The song follows a boy wanting to become a girl, and there are a lot of references to Cinderella. Although the song is played in a happy beat and the art is very cute, there is a subtle implication of the fear of being found out as the lyrics state at the end, "Make sure to keep it a secret". This made me really interested in this version of Cinderella because I never really thought of a queer Cinderella. It also makes the magical transformation that more special, and it might even be relatable to some people who wanted to transition or become someone else.

Also sorry if this comment is long.

NO pls i love how long this tangent is!! i love analysis and seeing my video inspired something like this is so cool. i didn't do a lot of research into a lot of books or music but that's s cool!! and i would love a queer cinderella. i know some kids books have aspects of a queer cinderella but i want representation in adult spaces and by god if i cannot see it i will grab creativity by the throat and make it myself

Your French is infinitely better than mine, and up until a couple minutes ago I had NO IDEA how many variations of Cinderella there are. 😅

It's a good thing they waited until the early and mid-2010s to make a Cinderella movie. They wouldn't have gotten that level of visuals from the 20th century. The 2015 film is definitely timeless. It's obvious that it wasn't made in the 20th century, because it would also be quite clear in which decade. You can put the 2015 film in any of the upcoming decades and it will fit right in. It's like Cottagecore meets a Jane Austin novel, and it's believable and absolutely gorgeous. BTW, _Cinderella_ (2015) is made for kids. I'm not sure where the hell does the "mature" label come from? Is writing the character like people what makes it mature instead of the simplified stereotypes, archetypes and caricatures? You can find those in a cartoon for toddlers. This is a cinematic movie after all. It needs to have depth. The other live-action _Cinderella_ movies can you tell which decade they were made in? Oh yes, you definitely can. They're suppose to be period pieces in-universe only, but what's onscreen dates them so much. It's obvious the animated movie was made in the 1940s, the Brandy movie was made in the 1990s, and the Amazon movie was made in the 2020s, and very embarrassingly so.
