Why is this so relatable.

When I was young I was told I was like Squidward.

Totally.

When I was younger, I would always relate more with Squidward. But now as an adult I realize I should try to be more like Spongebob, because seeing the world the way Squidward does isn’t at all healthy.

I think it's cause he deep down feels like a total failure cause he has no family and works a dead end job. So he wants to be mature and get his life together so the idea of goofing off with SpongeBob and Patrick, who are the complete opposite of what he wants to be, seems like a total waste of time. But when he does join them it helps him get out all that built up longing for excitement and joy in life even though it doesn't make him truly happy.

Never thought he was a jerk as a kid cause I also found Spongebob and Patrick was annoying so could easily see where he was coming from, especially when they violated his personal autonomy.

My sister who is younger than me always loved Squidward and found him hilarious. In fact he's her favorite character

As a man with horrendous sleeping issues, no friends, no willpower to pursue any of my interests anymore and who works 12 hours a day as a cashier for a minimum wage, I don't need a Squidward spin-off because I already *live* in one.

@@alarmlessRifleman OR... they go the Young Sheldon route and see how he was before the main series proper. I mean, of any of the characters who we could see that of and we would be cool with a spinoff of it should've been Squidward's past.

Squidward has suffered more than any fictional character in the world.

To be fair SpongeBob and Mr Krabs we’re already kinda like that. And Plankton didn’t have much of a character to begin with.

It's weird because I don't remember Ned Flanders ever changing as a character. I remember him always being the same one note Christian stereotype since he was first introduced

Patrick became an unlikable prick in Post-movie seasons. I still don't know why Spongebob calls the big pink idiot his best friend. Sandy is a far better friend than Patrick, but at least Squidward shows his hatred towards Spongie.

Squidward became even more hateful/easily annoyed, and ofc we got all the Squidward torture porn. Imo everyone was flanderized to shit immediately after Derek Drymon and Stephen Hillenburg left after the first movie.

Plankton is definitely #1 in that department. Not because he's evil but by how he's the one holding himself back. Even to when his own found family is the only thing that gives him any joy. And one of them he had to make! Just ouch..

He looks so happy for a change. My heart melts every time something good happens to this dude.

I rooted for Squidward to be happy, not necessarily because I thought he "deserved it", but because I empathized with him as a fellow artist and hated the recurring gag that he was bad at it. For a while, my favorite episode was "Enchanted Tiki Dreams" because it was one of the few episodes where SpongeBob and Patrick's plan to do something nice for him actually worked pretty well.

@Gnidel You know what? Maybe that's not something apropos to a video about why we relate to Squidward, but rather Cat from "CatDog". Remember "CatDog"? The entire town gave him so much 💩 for no reason, and I really related to that. As an adult, I would later go on to be diagnosed as having Asperger's Syndrome. But back then, there was no mental health awareness. Rather than getting the help I needed, I just got yelled at, and told that I was worthless and unlovable, just for being myself. Not just from everyone at school, including the faculty, but from my family. I lived with several cousins, all of whom would exclude me from everything. One of them would continually tell me that I was the reason why the house was always so dirty, and I would keep it that way because my only friend was a cockroach named "Henry." My point is that, growing up, there were a lot of cartoon characters who always seemed to get the shaft, and I would deeply relate to them.

- But while Squidward stood out for many as an 'oddball', Mr. Krabs was actually the most selfless and dynamic character of the series, if one considers just how much was revealed about him over the course of the show; yes, at his core he consumes himself over money, and his rivalry with Plankton plays a heavy part in his life, but we see it wasn't necessarily a fixation determined by greed; we also see other factors playing into his life, such as the episode I well remember and adore where SpongeBob tried to advocate for him at an old-timer's reunion, after shedding his shell just before, only to own up when he noticed the matter starting to get out of hand. That was a feel-good episode with a satisfying ending. (Part 2 of extended comment.)

- The other thing I should note is how SpongeBob played with its main cast overall, and the best way for me to describe it is compare it with how it was done in fellow iconic animated show The Simpsons. In the latter, the titular main characters serve as catalysts for plots more driven and defined by other characters surrounding them, whose dynamic arcs are considerably more developed. In SpongeBob however, the main characters ARE pivotal to every story, and their actions define everything that happens at the stories' core, with characters surrounding them answering to their causes.
