You haven't touched upon the point that humans have always been mesmerized by story telling. since centuries. and no one has yet found a better way to tell stories that reach all strata of societies than via movies.
And what about the DISTRACTION from our own lives into that of the ones on screen. Its easier to live through someone else's difficulties in life than our own. We can let go of our own life for a moment and distract us from our own problems. So at the end we can step back into our own lives with new selfconfronting knowledge that was more difficult to obtain when it was directly confronting us. It gives us the opportunity to freely reflect upon our own lives in the manner we personally see fit, up until the point it becomes too confronting. (Thinking while typing here..) Also we hope to get answers to life we dont have yet.. That hope of understanding EVERYTHING in life, is greatly stimulated when watching a movie. Because the information in a movie is given in a specific timeframe (lets say 1,5 hours). When we (think we) understand the relationship between all the events that happen inside the movie, in combination with our own knowledge, we get the idea we understand EVERYTHING, which is a concious minds goal. But we dont understand EVERYTHING after watching a movie..
We will never hear that soothing ASMR voice again. I started looking at films differently because of this channel. Never met Vinit but always felt represented whenever he spoke about films and life in general. His death is a mighty loss for all the Indian movie buffs and also the industry. He was meant for larger and greater things. Cannot believe he's gone now
You can never change the feeling of cinema. When you watch Avengers, you feel like a hero. When you watch a teen film, you sympathise with the characters. When you watch a love story, you watch a picturises version of the life that you want to live. Sometimes, it can give us hope, even if everything is scripted, that wonderful things really do happen.
Your words have moved me beyond anything ever has. Whenever in doubt about the content I am consuming, I always come back to your channel. I have been moved to read, and read more, I have been moved to learn, learn more, and always keep learning. Thank you for everything.
I tend to be studying in a private film school...Where half of my batchmates don't even love and respect cinema as I do...I hope they watch this..But I don't think they will do this too... I love you man ! What a video
man... i saw your one video and then I gone through all of it just now... I became your fan. you got that art to explain every critical n technical thing in simplest way. india needs such initiative to increase film literacy. your study is going to help a lot in writing my blogs... best wishes...
Totally agreed, Amazing essay. Before i choose to be a filmmaker, there was a guy lying on his bed getting into the dark void, then these were the movies who motivated and pushed me to get up and walk towards the place you wanna be. Yes, movies don't cure cancer but it also true that it gives so much power to bear the pain till everything gets over.
Hi Vinit... I am a cinephile, who discovered this treasure trove of a channel thanks to the RU-vid algorithm and for that, I will forever be indebted to it... it came as a surprise to me when I came across someone like you who saw movies differently and one who was able to articulate beautifully the concepts of movie making... even though movies has nothing to do with my profession, you were an integral part to shaping my passion for good films and although there was still a long way to go, I believe you have mentored me... Happy Teacher's day Sir...
In a world that is getting more and more desensetized as we are bombarded with all sorts of media, Cinema is something that can help you move in the opposite direction. You empathize with the characters. It brings out the humanity. Indeed, you learn what is it to be a human
It's good to know someone with an expertise in film-making (and watching) as you bear the same approach for watching films as I do. In fact I think this approach can be extended to judge a film "good" or "bad". A Good film shall always in the end (with all its adventures with camera, lights, sound, movement, timing, etc) let you empathize with its characters. A film which after all its grandeur and action fails to generate a yearning to relive those moments in the viewer's mind is not 'enough' in my book. Keep up the good work
It is almost impossible to properly describe the 'why' of film watching. Your explanation is generic and, imho, the reason of our indulgence in any art form, not specifically cinema. The reason I watch films, or rate cinema as the highest art form, is that films combine the best of all art forms. There is the best of literature (dialogue, voice over, lyrics), music, dance, photography etc, and it is all available within a manageable time period of roughly two hours. I also agree that many of us watch films as a means of escapism. But as you have aptly explained, films do have a higher purpose which needs to be understood.
There is no other art form which directly presents you the most intimate/private moments of a human being's life. Music, dancing, photography and paintings etc. are expressions of those private moments but nowhere close to the exact moment. Theater acting is by far the closest form of art I think to looking at a character at its utmost vulnerability because the character is right in front of you. You are watching the actual person rather than his projection. Theater and cinema have their respective pros and cons but for the sake of simplicity we can club both cinema and theater into one since Cinema is practically derived from theater and plays.
I am a millennial which makes me hunt for a purpose continuously. I am a filmmaker too. So when I witness some controversy or really dark things about film industry whether it be Bollywood or Hollywood, I sit back and start to rethink "WHY AM I DOING THIS?", "IS THIS THE PLACE I WANNA BE? THIS PLACE WHERE THE IGNORANT GLOW THE SAME OR SOMETIMES BRIGHTER THAN THE BRILLIANT..?" and I feel this existential crisis burning inside me. That is the time I come here and watch this video. It gives me my purpose back, it makes me realize the place of movies in society and how I can affect this art form. Suddenly, those dark things I witnessed vanish and the main purpose starts to look clear. Thanks Cinema Beyond Entertainment!
In love with your analysis and telling of minute things. Never knew films were anything other than at first(in childhood) entertainment and later(youth) escapism.
What a description... This monologue will stay with for a long time... Thank you for such a beautiful story and a perspective that I have never thought of. 🙂
This channel provides an insight into much deeper understanding about the necessity of movies and the need to watch movies and understand characters that has depth. thank you.
we always try to find our self in movies and try to connect it as much as possible. it could be a character of the movie, theme of the movie, song or a particular scene. as long as you connect with the flow you will love it.
Vinit.. I love you man! you included movies most of which are my favourites and being a lover of cinema, I was able to comprehend with each and every line you were saying.
Sometimes for me, i use movies as form of escapism, but they turn me all the way around, they make me start to have a deep look on what’s going on inside. They are the best artistic form.
A very well put together video, Vinit. I almost agree with all your points. I'm yet to read Tarkovsky's 'Sculpting in Time', but the name itself is interesting. Making a film is literally sculpting in time. We watch films because we can literally be in the shoes of some character existing in some other time/space and enjoy his/her story. When it comes to the choice of film, I wonder how people spend hundreds of rupees to watch shit and be okay with it. Anyway, keep up the good work. Cheers!
I've travelled the world, so I don't need movies to take me there. But now as I get older, I find that I can experience the early 1980's, by cooking a turkey, putting together a salad and watching The Big Chill. Movies don't really take us to a place. They take us to a place in time, and if you're over 60, that time has gone. So cook the best spaghetti sauce you can, break open a fine Chianti and watch The Godfather. It's as close as we'll get to our happy pasts. Fine food, fine movies. Our youth.
This channel, these videos have inspired me and they continue to inspire me. I feel like coming back here again and again whenever I lose focus . Thank You
My friends always told me not to watch movies or series but I didn't listened to them because I know, whoever I am today is because of beautiful and life influencing movies. I used to watch shitty contents of bollywood and I was just like my village peoples dumb and never think out of the box but in school a friend suggested me to watch cartoons and animes and then my journey begun. I started to watch Hollywood movies and other great contents and it totally changed my life. Can't say to others what's the benifits of watching movies for them but for me its life changing ❤️
Such a beautiful video. You are doing a great job. Please keep doing this. Try watching south indian films too. We 'madrasans' would be happy to see references to south indian films in your videos.
Very well said according to me apart from entertainment the most important function that a movie serves is to connect with the hearts as well as the conscience of the audiences the primary purpose of movie is not to make money but to inform us make us realize about the things we never ever imagined of
Thank you very much for doing this video! it means a lot to me........i love watching movies....and i suggest them to other people as well....but they never get the madness i have about these movies..........they often ask me why i love movies so much! now i can give them an answer! Thank you very much!
Hey Vinit, I've been following your channel for about a week now, and from the very first video I found coherence in your words. I've always loved movies but I never had the words to express the impact movies left on me. Your videos have given a life to all those emotions. Please accept this comment as a token of gratitude. Also, could you please suggest me how to be a better viewer and how to better understand the subtleties of this art?
Movies have everything which we want to get in life . Even short films also . Those 2.5 hrs or 3hrs. movie does every efforts to make you (us) happy to give something us . Movies are never only for entertainment . They are beyond that . They envision our life which we can't vision through normal eyes 😊 . They provide us the escape plans . They motivate us , manipulate us ( in positive sense ) . In short they just make us different before and after watching that . Means before starting some movie , I am different and after finishing it I will be different. It will inject some change in me . It may be little or big but it will be there . And another thing it may be life constructing or else it may be life destructing . It depends on us 😊😊😊
+Average Student The track is not from Arrival. It was used in Arrival. It first appeared in Stranger Than Fiction, then Shutter Island, then Disconnect, The Face of an Angel, The Innocents and then in Arrival.
Brother, I was really happy to see the clip of Ankhon Dekhi! Really appreciate the amount of work and dedication you have put into your work! Keep up! I am now a subscriber😍
yep i totally agree with you sir. And i believe this accounts to the reason why many actors turn out to be celebrities or superstars, the roles they have played have such immense influence in the society. but i worry if the majority view cinema 'beyond entertainment'.... cause if it were so movies now woudn't focus more on item dance, unimaginable romance, 6 packs, tall handsome men and glamorous women who fake acting and reacting...... not blaming blatantly... no i wont, i respect many movie industries, malayalam, tamil, bengali... Im just sharing my thoughts..... I still believe that our movies need to reform....
Hey man. Your doing a Great Job here but try not to Copy. I could feel the essence of a video D4Darious made, the lines, the dialect, the music, the pauses, right from the beginning. I know It's difficult to keep Video essays unique, but watch and study, Don't translate them 1:1. Your doing a great job by Analyzing Indian Cinema, stick to that. And try to find your own way of Structuring your videos. All in all, your on the right path. ;)
BTW A Fun Fact, Quentin Tarantino copies or so to say borrows a lot from other movies. vimeo.com/148955244 I feel copying actually makes your content better. Because your creative mind builds a lot upon that small piece of copy and much later it also doesn't seem like a copy. In this video, the references you made were accurate but he has added quite a lot of his own build up on those sentences. After all that disagreement, nice work noticing that.
Thank you so much, for making this video! The word needs to spread. Also, a question: Which film is being referred to when you show Weisler putting on his headphones and some guy playing the piano?
Yess! This is true! Cinema is about emotions. Gives us hope, inspiration. Opportunity to see the life from different perspective. Escape us from our daily lives. But as the technology grows, some years later virtual reality is entered in every home. Then that medium gives us cheap option and easy access to escape from our daily lives. That time can cinema remain as important as today or virtual reality takes over it?
0:53 the lives of others 0:57 enter the void We watch movies bcz our brain is designed to ignore stimuli that stay constant or doesn't change.. Films are one of the most effective n cheapest media which can bring our subconscious into something we never experienced before..
