Why do you need expression pedal for your synth / Moog with EHX expressions pedal on filter cutoff

Here is what I am thinking --- the expression pedal sends a varied amount of control voltage --- why not hook up a potentiometer to a TRS connector and control it from the desktop, DIY style? :D (p.s. nice OCD pedal, I have the '69 and '70 fuzzes!)
