Why Doctors are Striking in the UK - A Doctor's Perspective

Let's discuss one of the most pressing issues in the UK today - the ongoing junior doctor strikes. This episode is inspired by a lively debate I had during a recent trek with a gentleman who was curious about the reasons behind these strikes. As a junior doctor myself, I found it essential to use my platform to dispel some common misunderstandings and shed light on why 98% of junior doctors are joining the strike.
In this video, I provide a first-hand account of what it's like to be a junior doctor in the NHS, addressing the misconception that doctors are just trainees earning a "decent wage". I outline the exhaustive journey it takes to become a consultant, with 7-9 years of training following a 2-year foundation program, on top of a 5-year medical school course. Moreover, I highlight the startling reality of a 28% pay cut experienced by junior doctors in the last decade.
I'm here to clarify the critical distinction between a "junior doctor" and a "trainee". Despite the title, a junior doctor can be any non-specialist or consultant, regardless of age or training status. This pay issue doesn't merely affect newly graduated doctors but rather, a vast section of the medical community.
Beyond the personal perspective, I take a critical look at the national health care system, including the planned tripling of Physician Assistants (PAs) and ANPs, who enjoy higher wages despite not having attended medical school. By drawing comparisons, I strive to highlight the glaring pay disparity and its potential implications for the future of medical staffing in the UK.
Remember, this fight is not about entitlement, but about respect, recognition, and fair compensation for our dedication and invaluable contributions. Through real-world examples and comparisons, I hope to provide a clearer picture of why these strikes are happening, and why it's more critical than ever to support the junior doctors' fight for a fair wage.

Thank you so much Dr. A. As the younger-brother of a UCL-Imperial schooled Doctor 3 years from Consultant. She will actually likely be going to Australia by next year. Worst thing is, she feels some sort of 'Bond' with NHS because the NHS has superb high "brains trust" or in-house know how. She is salaried at £38,000 and yet works 50hrs p/w. Many years in A&E. Unfortunately she and 1000s others will go to AUS. I suggested USA since you become a Millionaire, but she has a strong hatred of the U.S Medical system. The way you explained this is so clear, so rational. It's sort of scary that the grown-up adults of this country can't understand this. I'm a Public Policy and Diplomacy student, and I tell you if a Govt doesn't care about its health system, there is clearly a problem which is long-term. The UK will soon decline sharply, and its a shame as the macro stats of UK are strong; it's just the governance has gone down such a level. Terrible. As you said BMA, which is the holy grail, is being attacked but the public. It's a head-banging issue not worth explaining tbh. I feel for you, and I hope you get the right value for your work + your ethics and all the brain value you paid for yourself. p.s. LOL at the BMA chairman; is that a mini dream of all DRs/MDs? All the best, Bob.

the 38,000 a year is what she is salaried right? for a full time 37.5 hrs contract? so if she is working 10 plus hours overtime a week she is making much more than 38,000 a year right?

Wait am confused .. so you saying post tax a doc gets £8 an hour. So if a junior doc works 40 hours a week (on avg) .. they only take £1280 home? (pre tax= £2240). If thats the case? How the hell they survive a month with just rents being around £400 to £600 for one room? And off course other bills too. Am i missing something. 😮

These are temporary issues. It's not like if government don't increase their pay. They will move to other countries, who will take them? You can go there but just don't rant about India like him. We are a nation where majority of poor people with third class health depends on food given by government. Doctors are most respected people in our country. Doctors earn way more than 95% of population. If you want good pay migrate to other country but don't say that pay is less. Can you say the same in UK? @nicolad8822
@nicolad8822 11 месяцев назад
We do not really have a full service private hospital sector. (Maybe a couple in London with a bit more to them). They don’t have intensive care facilities, emergency departments. If a Doctor valued their reputation they would need to be in the NHS, that’s where the research and top level treatments are happening. Private hospitals only do routine surgeries and consultations, if you are having a hip replacement and say have a heart attack on the table, you will be transferred to an NHS hospital.

£29k to start on is better than other professions. If you look at engineers and architects, they also deal with risk every day (no one wants a building/structure to collapse), do overtime, work long hours, long profession 7 years minimum, heavy debt, and are paid less in private sector. There is no money in the public sector. Tax payers continue to pay tax which increases every year, but are not seeing any improvements but a system going downhill. We all want a fair wage. I am not saying doctors are paid enough, they are underpaid. But many of my doctor friends go on holiday overseas at least once a year, travel around UK doing day trips, and eat out once a week at least...this kind of lifestyle is better than many others actually. I pity visa holders most for paying IHS and tax...some are paying more than they actually will ever use. It's more affordable to pay one-off in private for them if they are generally healthy.

@thebadguy4206
@thebadguy4206 9 месяцев назад
No. Only consultants can take on private work, and nearly all of them do private work (especially surgeons & aneasthetist) on top of their contracted hours - A HUGE income increase compared to when they were junior doctors, this is when they start making 6 figure salaries. Junior doctors can do locum work (paid a bit more), which is like agency work within the NHS but they cannot progress into specialist and consultants from this role. It's a double edgeed sword really. Hope that helps.

I completely support the doctors' strike. Being paid £14 an hour to save lives is ridiculous. Bus drivers earn more, train drivers earn more. This is not about competing with other professions, I'm just trying to put their pay into perspective. I wish you well in your fight. The government has money to spend. It's just that they don't want to spend it on doctors. Even a 35% increase only amounts to about £19 an hour. That's ridiculous. Good luck.
