Why Does Everyone HATE Sonic? 

I feel like I'm practically the only one that still loves sonic no matter how bad the games are

I am happy that people are actually taking the series and it's fans more seriously and not just mindlessly saying it's always been bad. *cough cough arin hanson*

I mean.. Sonic does get hated a lot but A LOT LESS than the Boom era + Lost World (2013-2016) and The "Dark Age" (2005 - 2009)

It’s definitely been hard to be a Sonic fan the past few years. Especially with critics constantly telling you that “Sonic has had a rough transition to 3D” or “Sonic was never good”. That’s why I’ve gotten to the point where I don’t care what critics think about a game. If I like the game and have fun with it, that’s all that matters. We’re all allowed to have our own opinions and shouldn’t need to rely on others to determine ours. Sonic Frontiers has tons of setbacks and is not a perfect game, but it’s the most fun I’ve had with a Sonic game in a long time. It doesn’t matter to me what the general consensus of the Sonic series is, it’ll always be one of my favorite franchises of all time regardless of its various low points. Also, I’m just gonna say it, I have more fun playing through Sonic Adventure than I do Super Mario 64. Adventure has aged much better in my opinion than 64. SM64 may have been revolutionary for the time, but I just don’t like playing through it. It feels repetitive and boring. At least with Adventure, it has highs and lows, but it keeps my interest.

I think there are two things that make people think that Sonic was always bad: 1. As you said in the video, 06 was terrible and has since tarnished the reputation of Sonic and critics somehow cannot stop mentiong it (even though the game is 17 years old, just let it rest in peace). 2. The toxic fanbase. There are many different opinions on Sonic and somehow people become extremely toxic about "no your opinion is wrong" "no my opinion is right". People just see the outisde of the fanbase, read a few toxic tweets, and write off the whole series and it's fans.

No matter how bad a Sonic game is they at least still have good music

I never want to hear the phrase “it’s good, for a Sonic game” ever again, because it gives the implication that Sonic games can’t be as well made or fun as other games, which is factually not the case. Yet I hear people say this every time a new Sonic game comes out that happens to be received well. Heck, I’m willing to bet Sonic Superstars will score an 8/10 while Super Mario Bros Wonder obviously scores a 10/10 just because it’s Sonic; even if Superstars did end up received better.

In my opinion most 3D Sonic games are good, SA1, SA2, Heroes, Shadow, Unleashed, Colours, Generations and Frontiers. Lost World and Forces are not really that bad, they are still playable games with some fun to be had with them and the storybook games are good as long as you have patience with their annoying controls. It’s mostly 06 and Boom that are just the bad 3D games.

One thing that annoys me is that some people literally revision history by going "no sonic 06 didn't turned sonic into a laughing stock sonic colors did" it's fine if you liked 06 and disliked colors but saying that 06 didn't hurt the sonic series but colors did is completely false. If you see someone saying this ignore them because they are just a bunch of clowns on Twitter wanting attention.

Another thing that the "Sonic is supposed to be bad" stigma has caused is a extreme polarization of both sides. You have people being way to harsh with their criticism just because it's a Sonic game, looking at the new titles far more cynically just because it's Sonic, resulting in reviews that don't feel like genuine assessments or the critics real opinions. On the other side we have fans who feel backed into a corner and have to defend Sonic no matter what, even when the flaws are obvious to anyone looking at the new games. The only way to fix this is for people to stop being scared to share their opinions on Sonic, stop being afraid to enjoy/criticize the games.

3:42-3:49 this part is SUPER true. One instance is this was when the sonic movie 2 was release and right after release Watchmojo made a " Top 20 WORST sonic games" vid from that alone i realize that some influential content creators are just use to/want sonic to fail or continue to be bad.

Part of it I feel like is deliberate. 1 ) 06 made the series an acceptable target. You can't bash Zelda without a lot of fans ripping you to shreds, but Sonic 06 and a few other games made the idea that Sonic sucks just... accepted. 2 ) SOME POPULAR RU-vidRS built their careers off of bashing that game in particular. So of course they want to milk that cow as much as possible. That's why any good the series does gets downplayed and even the slightest hiccup in a game like Frontiers gets cried about as "the next coming of 06."

That feels really true and it’s so sad how the Sonic franchise sucks even though there are absolute gems in this franchise!

You know I think the only way people will take Sonic as seriously as they did from 1991-2001 (which is technically kinda the last time Sonic was treated as a gaming legend) we would need 10-15 years of 8/10 Sonic games for that to change.

I hate how you can clearly see the effort that the devs put into trying to translate the Sonic gameplay format to 3D with Sonic Adventure, yet people still claim it's a mediocre or bad game because of '06. I mean, the game was made only in 11 months in 1998, and it's still one of the best, if not, the best 3D Sonic game we ever got (and a good transition to 3D).

I wholeheartedly agree with you. I was reading an article this morning on a gaming news site, and you should've seen all the people in the comments just trashing Sega and Sonic Superstars, calling it "Sonic 4 - Episode 3" and whatnot. It was horrific. Sega itself also bears the same issue, though probably not to the same extent as the Sonic IP. I think a lot of people actually like the Yakuza games and other stuff they make, but it seems like when Sega makes a couple *very* minor mistakes, people will just explode their load of hatred all over the company. Whereas, if it's *Nintendo* making similar mistakes, it's usually forgotten about within two weeks. For example, a complaint about Sonic Superstars I hear a lot is its high price for a 2D platformer. Okay, so tell me why Nintendo sells an OLED Switch model and markets it like we haven't already had that technology for the past 10+ years? Or, why they put out such a mediocre compilation like Super Mario 3D All-stars? Nintendo is certainly a much eviler company than Sega in my opinion. Sega is just kinda like the drunk guy at your house party who makes mistakes here and there but is generally a good-hearted individual, but then people will just ridicule him out of nowhere for simply being a little clumsy.

I'm a veteran Sonic fan, been one since the Master System days and played most of the game mostly in order of release, and I've since come to my own conclusion of why so many people don't like or actively hate Sonic: 1) The gameplay was too complex to many people. Your average 2D sidescroller platformer, like Mario, will have you go to point A to B in linear fashion, jumping, with maybe some simple attack action and some optional collectibles along the way. Sonic is not the hardest ever, but it introduced a pinball-like physics system to the equation, many branching paths, different gimmicks and things pushing you all around, the Special Stages, and the speed. A lot of people just never got into Sonic (never even the 2D games) because the games expected too much of the player. You can see this bleeding over modern games, like Riders 1 (which was way more complex than your average Mario Kart clone), and Unleashed. Over time the games became more linear and automated to accommodate casual players. Lost World's gameplay style was a way to make Sonic more casual friendly, with the run button and parkour system, and no physics; 2) Being Sega's mascot and Sega's consoles, when the Dreamcast died and Sega left the home console market, a lot of people assumed Sonic died with the Dreamcast. If you trace back all the negative reviews by gaming press you'll see that the "Sonic was never good" narrative began with Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, the first Sonic game released for a main Nintendo console. Sonic Mega Collection was also criticized by the press because "some of the games included are not good". To some people, Sonic is the best bit of Sega's relevancy the Gaming Sphere that refuses to die. The mediocre to bad games only facilitated this narrative. 3) The internet and RU-vid's boom of popularity. Game/media reviews became one of the first big kinds of content on YT, with many being game reviews. Many people were influenced by AVGN. When it came to mock bad games, Sonic 06 was an easy target, which later prompted a revisionist look at older Sonic games. This is where the "Sonic had a rough transition to 3D" lie came to be, despite the original Dreamcast releases of SA1 and SA2 having high scores from the press at the time and being two of the best selling games on the system; 4) Sega releasing garbage ports. I think this might be one of the most important historical factors to that led to the damage done to this brand, far more than Sonic 06. The PS2 was way more popular worldwide than the GCN and Xbox combined, specially in countries like Brazil. The PS2 version of Sonic Heroes is atrocious! It has bad framerate, bad graphics, is more buggy. The PC version was an early build that had its own issues. Then, the SADX and subsequent ports of SA1 forever tarnished the public's perception of SA1 as a buggy ugly mess of a game. The HD port of SA2 has its own issues. Only hardcore fans will go out of their way to install the Dreamcast Conversion mod to fix the Steam port of SA1, the majority of the players will play the inferior vanilla experience. I can't wait to see how much damage Colors: Ultimate will do to Colors reputation in the future.

The people that say that 3D sonic sucks are the same people that can't take a Sonic story seriously and just make fun of the ambition like if it was cringe and say that SONIC COLORS HAS THE BEST STORY OUT OF ANY SONIC GAME and now I have a question: should I move to mars after that?

It feels like one bad games is unforgiveable and permanently harms sonics reputation forever. 06 might have been bad gameplay wise, but later games like unleased and generations makes up for all of that and much more. Honestly I could play throught some of the more ''janky'' games and loving it. SA1 on steam without mod are oftern trased for being a bad port (which honestly I understand), but I had no problem playing through the game. Hell, I encountered more jank in the gamecube version of SA2 than my playthrough of SA2 on steam, but I still loved my playthrough of the game.

Despite how bad the games may be, I still find a good bit of joy playing them. Hell. Even Rise of Lyric I enjoyed the steps they were taking to make that variation of Sonic Different. I think it’s because I’m not too big of a critic to hate on games. If I enjoy them, I’ll play them again. Even Lost World on both 3DS and WIIU I’d wish I could try.

Frontiers was clearly an evolution. The combat and open zone concept is phenomenal..and the boss fights are doubtlessly among the best in gaming history

I'm probably the only person that actually likes Sonic 06. the gameplay was definitely buggy as all hell but i liked the amount of playable characters and the interconnected stories and yes i liked how serious it took itself. I wish it could've been better honestly but i don't hate it

Im not a fan of 3d Sonic games. I only enjoyed Sonic Colours in the WII, but Id never call a Game bad, just because its 3d Sonic. Just because you dont like the Games, doesn't make the Games bad. I Like Most 2d Games and Im looking Forward to Superstars

So, Mario 64 is groundbreaking but Adventure 1 is just Sonic in 3d... Where is the difference? They both do the same thing - adding third dimension to the game, and both did that perfectly for their age. But on top of that Adventure also added different characters with unique playstyles. Then why 64 is groundbraking but SA is not?

I love Sonic Forces, my best played game of all time but uhh, you might think i'm crazy since you all say Sonic Forces is the "worst" game. The title of the video is a little misleading but sonic frontiers is a step in the right direction it’s not perfect but it’s definitely still fun and you can make it more fun with mods sega is actually listening to the community now and making changes to make the game better

The old saying people will never let go of your mistakes 06 happen, Forces happened, Colors Ultimate had a rough few months, several patches laters, it runs better and barely anyone complains about it anymore But we will have the bad game rep, people talking about the "rough transition into 3D", and the toxic fanbase pf Sonoc Tubers Because people like Arin, Chris Chan, Mariotehplumber, all the toxic and creeps We are Pokemon community bad and the that took years for them to make ot hard for children to just enjoy the games

I think the fanbase also "helped", to increase the bad reputation of the franchise. I know that are many good people on the community, but after watching some videos of weird sonic fans... Unfortunally i have to agree: sonic Fandom it's one of the worst, and this kinda embarasses me because i'm a sonic fan since 2005 . And no matter how sonic team tries to please everyone with a good sonic game, the executives never let then finish the game propely. I think if the fanbase unites, and say something like: Hey Sega , it's all right if the gane takes 6 or 7 years to be done, since the game be at least a 9/10 it's worthy. I'm tired of Rushed Sonic games! Come on , the last truly Good Sonic's Masterpiece was Generations. We are now 12 years without a 10/10 3D game( disclaimer: i like Frontiers, i think is a 7/10, but still is not good enough for Sonic) Sonic deserves more, we deserves more, it's time to Sonic team make Sonic games that are worthy of the Sonic Legacy.

I think it’s more like people made fun of Sonic rather than hating on the character. I mean don’t get me wrong. 06 is certainly a huge dumpster fire for what it was. But you do gotta admit, at least with some exceptions like Sonic 4 and Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, the music is always the best thing about the franchise. Looking strictly at the mainline games, Sonic has more good games than bad ones. Not that different from series like Castlevania or Megaman. I believe it's the image the general public has of the fandom (mostly way over exaggerated) that makes it cool and hip to diss Sonic specifically.
