David, thank you. These types of videos are so important for people, especially those new to pouring, to see. You’ve demonstrated that it’s not just anecdotal evidence when it comes to Amsterdam paints for cell activators. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. 🐻
I saw the title/thumbnail and thought the video was going to be anti Amsterdam. Glad to see it was the reverse. I admit to being surprised by the differences between the paints used so thanks for a really eye opening video David.
Hi again dear 🇭🇲 I'm painting every day now young man 👍 you have been a consistent source of instruction, thankyou so much 🙏 I went into a fancy artists shop other week, wow 😲, I finally seen this Amsterdam brand, very pricey but I'd imagine online would be better? My main channel I follow is another Aussie, she's in Queensland, Lucky Lady and she mentioned you 👍, Gilly kube is hers and I've come leaps and bounds now. Hadn't realised I've been having lessons now 2yrs !!! But I'm in exhibitions now and have sold about 7? 8? Paintings??? Who'd have thought a Nanna on a tight budget could do this? Thanks a million dear 👏👏👏🥰🇭🇲
I am! Just busy with life. Working on a membership/course to help people troubleshoot their own problems. I only have so many extra hours in the week so last week's video got axed.
Done loads of experiments on paints, for cell activators, mind you there is no such thing, its all to do with pigments and fluidity ,you have got it down, young man, you must have watched "chase fluid art" everyone should watch it,like you he says it nice and easy, a great teacher ! I keep watching it as you realy need to keep it in your head, all the best,Dave.
Always a delight to watch you do these experiments. I’m a forever student with many interests, but really enjoy and soak up every experiment you post. Thanks for sharing. 🎶💞🎶
So glad you did this video. I ALWAYS learn something that saves me time, money, and frustration. But with it being so awesome, no store carries it and I have a fear of ordering online.
Thank you David for confirming what I had tried some time ago, it’s always good to listen to big brains like yours!!. I too always keep two scrapers for those accidents on to pick up and save drips. 🙏🏼🥰
Roger says his pours get better with beer, for drinking 🍸 😜 or mixing in his paints. Once again your experiment is very helpful. Thanks again for your tips and tricks.
I save packaging materials to use as scoopers/scrapers and then just discard them. Thick plastic unfortunately comes in mailers, all kinds of packaging and boxes to repurpose. (I also use these for scraping and disposing globs of kitty litter so as not to have to clean a scooper). Haven't been pouring due to a shoulder injury, but continue to watch your impeccable channel, just love your work and demeanor. Thanx
I love an engineer’s brain, especially when it is also a creative brain! I think we need a t-shirt that says “David you are our creative spirit animal!” 😂🤣😁
These look like X-rays of why you need to keep your bones strong and healthy. You could probably sell those to an orthopedic dr. These are your bones 🦴 or bone mass at 20, 40 and 80. That is immediately what it reminded me of. As always excellent work David!
I just did 3 swipes with Amsterdam Mars Black, and they came out perfect. I do usually use Amsterdam Titanium White or Mars Black if I'm trying to get cells, so I figured I could swipe with it as well, and it worked out very well.
my fav guy to watch when I wanna learn something. I'm definitely a left brained artist, I Have To understand the ins and outs before I do something. your time is very much appreciate good sir!
Thank you so much for sharing these tips today. The scrapers are a game changer. I’m off to try my amtersdam white on a swipe. Happy weekend lovely one 😊
The amount of pigment is as important as what the pigment is made out of (real Titanium oxide or "Titaium" oxide) Amsterdam also has a table which allows you to compare the mass of the pigments for individual colours (so no need for activators, if you stack the colours in the correct order of mass. Heaviest on top).
I love Amsterdam paints. I do use some acrylic paints that are a bit more cost wise but my base coats mostly are Amsterdam Titanium White and Mars Black. Thanks for the demo.
I love everything about Amsterdam Titanium White. Even the smell of it. Been buy in the small jugs, but got a large one last week & mixed a big batch up. Still trying to master the swipe. Gonna try again tonight with some Penetrol which I also just bought.
@@LeftBrainedArtist since you’re in the mood to chat, what do you think is more important. Amsterdam paint, floetrol, or penetrol? I know you mix floetrol with paint as a medium, so when do you use the penetrol? Add a few drops replacing silicone? Replace the floetrol? When i started watching this technique, it was titanium white, floetrol or Elmer’s glue plus water. Now there’s so many more choices. I was going to try the penetrol, but it didn’t come in small amounts.
@@cynthiaking5308 Amsterdam is the most influential. Penetrol only enhances the cells you get. It doesn’t create more on its own. 2nd influence is Floetrol but it isn’t necessary. Paint and water work too.
Fine!!! 😄. I will now be getting the Amsterdam white. YOU should be getting a commission on their paint sales that you recommend. 👌. I did two small paintings with Amsterdam pearlescent...SO beautiful.
Great ‼️Thank you.. Amterdam paint is cheaper if you get it in a pack I bought 1 White two yellow a purple and two blue one black on line for 10.00 plus tax.I found out how to get amterdam actually less expensive than paint of lesser quality ❤️Thank you again David another good vedio..I get cells from the yellow and the blue ones.Of course the black and white..
I was waiting for this video. Thank you for doing this experiment. I now have my penetrol and will try my first swipe soon. have you considered a similar experiment testing brands of black for the swipe? I may try swiping over a metallic as well. the metallics seem to create nice big cells in dutch pours so it may impact swipes too.
I humbly request you to make a video for liquitex pouring medium with liquitex basics. It would be great to know the correct mixing proportion for dutch pouring. Believe you are the one who could help me with this.. blessings you
Hi leftbrain ; Im fairly new to this art ; finally I mite know how to get cells on my painting?? Ur the first one I’ve actually seen to explain better wat to use? I just can’t get my ratios rite? My paint is to thick to stretch not sure wat I’m doing wrong ?? I’ve tried glue, water, nail polish remover , soap, n pouring med. still can’t get cells?! Can u help! Thnx
That is a really hard question to answer without seeing the end results you are getting. Normally people aren't getting cells becaue they use lower quality paint and because their paint is either too thick or too thin.
Hey David! How are you today? Tysvm for always responding to questions and comments. You're a really dope artist! So for the first time I got a pack of bugger canvases that say 100% cotton "medium grain" they seem rough compared to the dollar general ones I've been getting. Is there a specific grain you use? Or do you have any tips for medium grain or does it even matter? I got a 7 pack lol so hopefully they're ok.
Medium grain should be fine. You might need a light bit more paint to cover and you'll see the texture through a pour (which I don't mind at all). Those are the big differences.
David - I recently saw a video where the artist put down a base coat for a wandering ring pour. Do you know why a base coat is helpful? I have never done that with any pours other than the Dutch Pour. Maybe you can do a video on comparing a ring pour with a base coat and a ring pour without? Thanks!
Hi. Thank You for all the movies - helps a lot. But I have question about problem that i had last time and dont know why. I made pour with 4 colours. 3- were amsterdam and 1 - was arteza. And it looked like amsterdam did not work well with that one arteza colour. So I wonder if amsterdam doesnt work good with arteza paint in the pour or mabey i just added a little too much water into arteza. I did not had any problems like that with mixing any other companys of paints together.
What you do you mean by it "didn't work well"? I have used those two in the past together and didn't have a problem. My gut reaction would be consistencies were different but again that is a guess without seeing it. Any chance you could send me a picture (contact form on my website leftbrainedartist.com/contact). Let me know which colors where which and hopefully I can give some better guidance.
@@LeftBrainedArtist Thank you very much. I did wrote email and found also different problem when checked my amsterdam paint xd But its problably consistencies.
I appreciate your teachings. My problem is that I never got cells. It's very frustrating not being able to do some techniques that require cells. I use liquitex but I ended up buying an Amsterdam oxide black with US floetrol and I still don't have the cells, I've mixed it in several ways but I don't know what happens. Is very sad 😔
Question? Is there a way to stabilize/stop the patterns from moving so I can keep the cells I have developed without them getting bigger or moving? I was thinking of using my oven at different settings(bake. broil etc) and temperatures to see if that'll work. or maybe the fridge/freezer? wondering if you ever experimented with those ideas? would freezing make snowflake / fractal designs by freezing the cells? Just wondeering.
Do your swipe after you've tilted. Then the patterns will say once they are fully formed. I don't recommend addingheat as you'll get cracking and crazing. I have tried freezing. It was interesting . . . to say the least. - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mhgEDpUNcXU.html
Could I ask, does this say anything about the paints in terms of more traditional/standard painting or is this specific to this style? (I'm trying to decide between amsterdam and liquitex basics for my entry level acrylic paint haha)
This is really a fluid dynmic issue so it pertains only to paint pouring as opposed to traditional paint. I do like the matte finish of Amsterdam for regular painting as opposed to the more glossy finish of Liquitex.
Getting ready to move from Apple Barrel and FolkArt craft paint to a better student grade. I was thinking Liquitex. I know Amsterdam Titanium white is good for big cells which I love but ig I just wanted your opinion for colors other than white. Im on the fence about if I should get Amsterdam or Liquitex? I've never used student grade paints at all I very excited.
I have one question: When I do a swipe it often looks really good at first and then the „net“ vanishes and I get big ugly „puddles“ of color… difficult to describe…basically beautiful turns ugly when it dries. Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong?
It worked!!! Yes the base was too thin, now suddenly the pictures look great! Now I am going to try Amsterdam Titanium White as well. So far I have used the Titanium White from Lukas and I think this paint works pretty good for swiping as well.
I couldn’t find Amsterdam classic so I got the expert series titanium white. Should that work as well? I’m not getting good cells so I wonder if that’s the problem.
@@LeftBrainedArtist I've yet to try swiping, but I do get cells with liquitex basics and liquitex pouring medium. I may try your experiment without floetrol. I have too try swiping first. Lol
u always figured it was because of being hung up on Brand name. I don't think it's better than Masters Touch or Deco Art at least from when I tried it. I know it costs more than those other Brands do as well
priciest acrylic paint i ever bought was amsterdam expert pyrrole red and wow it is by far the most intense red I've ever seen, i was blown away. How is Utah basketball these days?
I honestly don't know. I haven't run in to that problem yet. I would assume the only thing to do is the let it sit for a while and then do another layer of resin but that is just a guess.
@@LeftBrainedArtist if Amsterdam brand is adding something to the titanium white and if they are adding the same thing to the zinc white, it might be possible zinc white may act the same, but I haven't heard of fluid artists raving about "Amsterdam zinc white," it might be the pigment they are using. It's so mysterious that each product acts differently.
