Ken Ham claims to provide a basic course in genetics. He does not. And why is he so hateful towards poodles?

Ken's silly ideas reminds me of the naive person that says things like, "Crocodiles are less evolved than monkeys." based on the idea they are further away from humans on the evolutionary tree. But forms of crocodile have been evolving longer than primates, so who's to say which is 'more evolved'?

This can be blamed on biology textbooks that put humans or mammals in general on the top of phylogeny tree.

In reference to the Poodle cut on the Standard Poodle and NOT the exaggerated Show Cut the clip actually makes sense. The French Poodle was originally developed as a hunting dog specifically as a water retriever for Ducks and Geese and the hair that was left was to keep the dogs joints and body warm while the rest was quickly dried off with a towel or air dry between water retrieves. Honestly the Standard Poodle should be moved back into the Sporting Group as that is actually were they belong, while the American Cocker Spaniel with the exaggerated show clip should be moved out of the Sporting Group as a vast majority of them have lost most of their hunting drive and ability.

I'd argue that 1398 kinds* is too many to fit on the ark. That's why Ham is disputing his own "scientists" to lower that number even more. *Side note. The graphic on the display says "1398 kinds / 6744 animals". How does that math work? I guess it has something to do with 7 of some and 2 of others.
@pencilpauli9442
@pencilpauli9442 Год назад
Heard the other day that Ham was going to have animals on his full scale toy boat, but realised that it would take more than 8 people to look after them all, which would scupper the concept of the Ark being literal, rather than what it really is, myth and metaphor. There's no getting around the logistics.
@thomasbritt5265
@thomasbritt5265 Год назад
@@pencilpauli9442 have you ever slept in a hyperbolic compressed air chamber? Or at least spent an hour in one? So if conditions were correct and say these people lived to be 900 years old. Wouldn't you be able to do practically anything or run a mile in oxygen levels 50% higher than what we have today? That's if you know that there's a firmament, and its been depleting over years on end. There's more evidence that these 8 people could have been giants than people like us. The logistics actually reflect what life was like on the earth 6000 years ago. It depends on how you view the evidence. Now I'm not saying spend your time in one of these chambers. You can, its not going to increase your height, but it should give you energy, making you feel like you could run marathons around creationists like me. :)

Happy birthday PZ's mom! xxx We had a toy poodle when we were kids. Loved him loads. In fact I still remember the sense of awe and wonder at having a dog, a tiny bundle of life. Poodles are smart, loyal wonderful dogs. Tammy used to know when it was time for our grandfather to get home from work. Yes they have eye problems, but so do humans when we get old. I'd rather have a poodle in my life than disingenuous arse like Ken Ham. We are part of nature, and the thought of having a common ancestor with all mammals and beyond, and even being made of stardust is mindblowingly wonderful.
@Sforeczka
@Sforeczka Год назад
Dr Myers, I have a question. I understand that there is a tendency for individual dogs from feral populations free breeding over doggie generations to exhibit a certain phenotype. Usually they are medium size, longish faces, short tan coats with countershading, folded down ears, and a curled up tail. Is there a term for that? I was thinking it was "wild type." Is that right? My dog is such a dog. We did a DNA test, and 8 breeds came back, including Great Dane and Dachshund. But I don't know what to think about that now because the estimated breed proportions totaled more than 1. But from what I've seen a little bit, the dogs of Chernobyl seem to be exhibiting more phenotypical variety. Climate maybe. Dogs are cool, I'm a social anthropologist, so an idiot in biology. Best wishes as the semester comes to an end.

I want to add something to 2:48 about genetics. That placental mammals (including, but especially humans) had ova wasn’t known until *extremely* recently. Before then, people literally believed all the baby stuff came from male gametes. It’s why the Bible et fam throughout used the term “seed”, they thought the father was the only one involved in contributing “stuff” and the mother was just a place to grow the seed.

I have to laugh every time someone has a go at poodles as some dainty foofoo dog. My service dog (now retired) is a standard poodle, and many of his half siblings also became service dogs or SAR dogs working in the Rockies. His dam (mother) held multiple titles in things like lure coursing and barn hunting. I have NO idea where the ridiculous hair cuts come from but all of the origin stories are myths; working poodles and gun dogs are generally kept in a uniform, short clip from head to toe, maybe 4-6cm long.

The poodle hair cut also related to their role as hunting dogs. Poodles would plunge into cold water to retrieve shot ducks and geese, so they were shaved to remove as much fur as possible (to cut down the weight of the wet fur) but leave fur covering the areas of the vital organs (e.g., there are patches over the kidneys) for warmth. Whether or not this is actually effective insulation according to modern physiology or not I have no idea, but that was the idea.

If we "loose information", going from wolf to poodle, does this not imply that the poople is the purest form of a "kind". This as the information lost, should be the information "not needed". Ergo, a refinement of dna over time? On the other hand... we are considering a hypothesis formulated by AiG, soo... we should expect nothing to make much, if any, sense at all. What can usually be expected, is the lack of surprise as AiG "shoot" themselfs in the foot.

What do you think Ken Ham thinks the "perfect human" looks like? What skin tone, hair, or eye color does Ken Ham think is the one "devoid of sin" (lets use a synonym, "pure"), which one is the original, dare I say, "Master" copy of gods chosen race?
