Why does my propane tank smell like rotten eggs? If you smell a rotten egg odor coming from your propane tank or device, it indicates a propane gas leak. This smell is a warning signal, and it's imperative that you follow the instructions in this video on what to do if you have a leaky propane tank. Leaking propane gas can cause a hazardous situation, so it's crucial to learn how to quickly stop the leak and isolate where it's coming from. Once you locate the leak, you can repair or replace the faulty equipment and operate your propane tank, grill, burner, or stove safely again. Propane gas is naturally odorless, and the rotten egg smell comes from a chemical added to the propane gas, so you can detect a dangerous leak that could be combustible if not fixed. ‪@cookingwithcoastalcaterers‬

The rotten egg smell is from a chemical additive to the propane gas. If you smell the rotten eggs it means you have a leak in your propane setup somwhere.

I have always been a charcoal griller and have avoided propane my entire life. Well, I bought a gas fire pit and bought my very first 20 lb propane tank. Everything is hooked up properly, and we sprayed soapy water on the connection points per the owner's manual. Opened the valve, and there were no bubbles, but the tank hissed and smelled bad. I'm guessing I have a bad tank and that I need to take it back to Wal-Mart. Turned the valve off, and the hissing stopped, and so did the smell. Makes me wish I hadn't bought the fire pit now. Propane doesn't seem very safe to me. Bad tank? I don't know, but I feel like I just threw money away.

Yeah, if you open the hand wheel on the shut-off valve and the tank starts hissing and smelling, you have a bad tank. The only time it should really hiss is when the gas has expanded, and the PRV has to let some gas out to relieve the pressure. Don't give up on propane, though. Sometimes, you get a bad piece of equipment. Fortunately, we have never really had too many issues with our propane tanks, and we use five or six at some events. 1000s of events over the years.

@cookingwithcoastalcaterers Well, I was going to buy a Blackstone, but after this bad experience with propane right out of the gate, I'm not going to get one. Will stick with my old-fashioned Weber Kettle grill. It's never failed me. There's clearly a reason I've stayed away from propane. Charcoal grilled meats taste better.
