@@nikolaideianov5092 The main problem with destroying the tracks is that you may NEED the tracks in order to transport supplies to certain areas. If you take them out, you potentially make transportation of your own logistics impossible.

The only issue is that they should use civilian trains instead. Armored trains are much more costly to build and crumble easily under attacks from drones, RPGs, etc. It's more about cost versus benefit than trucks versus trains. Also, their winter isn't as intense and potholes aren't the biggest issue when explosions are going off around you. I mean, dirt roads exist.

Cars aren’t as important as most people think, bikes and trains are enough to get anywhere you need if your infrastructure is built for it. 

Rails are just a different type of road.

You're not going to be driving an armored train around at full speed, you're also going to have plenty good enough sensors tracking the rails ahead AND beside it for several hundred meters specifically to detect such attempts. Also, since there's no requirements for speed or perfect economy for such a train, you WILL include "brushes", dunno the correct English word, but it's basically just a relatively simple contraption ahead of the first wheels that sweeps away anything on the tracks before the train can drive over it. There's also the fact that the combination of the much greater weight of the armored train than a regular one and the slower speed, that if there's STILL anything on the tracks, it's going to get squashed before it can affect the train much. So no, it isn't. And BTW FYI, i'm the first person in my family for 4 generations to NOT work on railroads... So, i'm kinda VERY used to railroad stuff.

The problem is that trains rely on railroads to work properly. Those can be quite fragile and i'm amazed how it's still almost intact in metro exodus.

Trains do seem like they would be old tech that could be an easy fall back. Flying is really just a luxury that can be easily countered (Afghanistan before and Ukraine now) and ATVs seem less reliable than a train. If anything a train is too reliable (can only follow a track). Edit: Also the secret Metro 2 line confirmed in video at 4:10

honestly i would believe it is in-fact harder to target from the sky, given that a single armored train (depicted here for example) is about 1 train and 9 carts in length, while a complete logistics lane can be hundreds of trucks going on a large, open road.

Depends on the train whats stopping the mechanics from putting an surface to air missile or manpads on it?

Another issue though is that someone can sabotage the tracks and stop/derail the train

This is just a risk you must live with and do your best to mitigate.

Ukrainians have not shown much of an ability to stop the Russians from supplying their troops on the front so I suspect the Russian supply lines are fairly secure. All I see the Ukrainians do behind the lines is blow up random office buildings rather than train tracks or anything actually useful.

I served in Russian military (before the war began) and I can confirm that you are saying is mostly true. It is been a main strategical doctrine in Russian forces that weaponry and vehicles are specifically had been designed from soviet times to modern to be cheap, simple and with decent sturdiness. Russian military equipment usually not really comfortable to use nor it is known for being on a scientifically edge, but it is VERY (and I mean it) easy to maintain in every environment with some wires and basic instruments (I was radio-telegraphic specialists). And it’s cheap too. So yes, it is counter-intuitive advantage of some sort - downshifting arms for the sake of sustainability and simplicity

@@angrymaninapandamask6432 Not bridges or embankments. And outside the Warsaw Pact the tracks are a different gauge. More insidious is when a rail is sabotaged but looks fine. Then the train derails and you lose all engine and all the cars. Break the tracks in several places and there is the problem of getting to and finding all the places to repair.

It's not that simple. The saboteurs always goes for the tracks, not for the train itself. They dont have to destroy anything either. They just need to make delays, and thus the logistics becomes very costly and difficult to sustain.

When USA invaded Iraq, they used 60 thousand artillery shells during the whole campaign. And to do that, they had to spend months building up. It can be practical to avoid some kind of ambush while still in Russia, a commando passing true the frontier may not have enought equipment to blow a track. Or when moving in other countries it protect the load from attacks directed at the train himself, if the enemy doesn't want to blow its how rails and only attack the trains. Or in case air attack miss you are protected from shrapnels. It can also be a huge moral booster, if a soldier come back after days of fighting in terrible conditions seeing a giant and strong looking chunk of steel on rail can give some motivations/patriotism. Or its just a common case of "we have too much money / need a project to lauder governements founds / I saw it in a movie once and it looked cool, lets build it and then we'll figure out how to use it".

amored trains are still useful for supply, an uptaded armored train would be cool if upgraded with better AA systems, it would be even better if the radar was in the last wagon and was detachable so you can confuse HARM missiles or another radar detection devices, but it needs to be escorted and always behind troops, armored train for attacking usually ends up in disaster if you dont know whats ahead, they also need engineers inside capable of fixing blown up railways so its quite the logistics to use one of them nowadays

@Jakstr1981 they're performance in the Russian civil war and the wars before mass Ariel war says otherwise, look at the effect they had in the Russian civil war where the czechoslovak legion held the transiberian railway at will. Even in 1939 the poles used them to such great effect the Germans literally reintroduced them to service due to the ambush tactics they adopted.

@@loyalpiper Trains, armored or not are easy to predict, easy to locate, and easy to stop. In fact, they don't even have to be attacked directly to be stopped. The tracks are always there waiting to be damaged. Trains aren't known for going off-road. If one is coming, it's easy to avoid. So this means there really isn't an advantage to armoring a train. It'll be stopped and killed just as easily regardless. So this means armored trains are a pretty toy that is more of a waste than a tool.

Destroying the tracks doesn't work if they can just repair the tracks and be moving again within an hour,, hence why partisans had to result to blowing up the trains themselves durring ww2 but solutions were constantly being made to counter this. And even if you directly attack it after blowing up the tracks you've still got a heavily armoured fortress you need to destroy in a direct attack. It only becomes obsolete once you have highly developed aircraft with ordinance which is capable of piercing its armour.
