What's happening good people, bit of a different video today, but I thought I'd talk about Seikos best budget quartz movement and why they don't use it in their own watches. Well my theory that is. Thanks

Hey guys, here is my theory as to why Seiko perhaps don't use their best budget quartz movement. Keep in mind this is speculation and again is a theory. But it makes sense if you think about it. Do you think I'm right? Thanks guys and have a great start to your week.

I think that the DATE & TIME on this CASIO AE1200 watch should be a larger size. The DATE and TIME on the CASIO model W96H-1BV is a much larger size. I can see the TIME on it easily from 1 meter away ! The CASIO W96H-1BV is my favorite digital watch because it shows the TIME, DATE, DAY and YEAR all on the face without having to push any buttons for selection. You look at this watch and it shows everything all at once.... though the CASIO AE1200 watch is better when traveling to different countries.

Agreed. The one beat per second quartz remains the standard simply to differentiate the high end stuff. Watch manufacturers who offer both a mechanical version and a quartz version need to make the quartz version feel "cheap".

Very reasonable! I love quartz! I love that a quartz watch is accurate and always ready. Having to swap the battery every 3-5 years is a compromise I'm happy to make! I wish Seiko gave us more quartz options. I'd even pay the same price for a quality quartz movement as for an automatic. I want my watches to be accurate and always ready.

I agree with your opinion mate. I do believe, that better accuracy and a smoother sweep with these sweeping quartz movements are possible, may they have to make the batteries a bit bigger, obviously they come at the cost of thickness and battery life. But if they have done that obviously for an average customer even the highly regarded Spring Dive and other automatic movements will be a tough cookie. Well that's the case with Seiko. What surprises me is that why other true electronic watch makers like Casio are not interested in the R & D of these movements. They have already used sweeping quartz movements in their watches, even though its a borrowed one from Seiko, why they are focused only on digital movements?
@WesWatchRoom
@WesWatchRoom 2 года назад
That's probably the biggest downside of the movement and I have an idea on how to fix it. Would be cool to see casios with something similar as well. A lot of people said they should combine it with their solar technology

@markkuzminski3922

Very plausible theory Wes. It makes sense from Seiko's point of view. I still don't get why this movement is not used more broadly and why you would ever use a single tick quartz movement when you could use this. Also why does Seiko not produce a higher end sweeping quartz for use in their higher end pieces? Perhaps they could engineer a finer sweep for those pieces?
@WesWatchRoom
@WesWatchRoom 2 года назад
Thanks mate and it's a challenge, the battery size can only provide so much power for so long, that's why the spring drive movements are so expensive. But I'm sure there are ways to get around it as I'd love to see this movement more widely adopted. Thanks

I must be missing something! I wish I could clip out this quote (around 8:05), "Why would anybody buy an automatic, that is not as accurate . . ." That is exactly what I can't figure out! Thanks so much for this very interesting video.

Low end budget movt's are PC32's as found in many Lorus and Pulsar's, next level up is VX42-43's again found in many budget Lorus and Pulsar's. I have seen elsewhere that its suspected the 31 is basically the timekeeping side of a VK63 mecaquartz chrono. I seem to remember Seiko used these in their pricier sub brands Wired and J Springs and maybe Alba AKA. The VX4x are far far cheaper to produce and about as accurate albeit with the ticking motion of the second, the 31 has a jewel count where the 43 has zero jewels, zero jewels means more profit all round lol

i know something about watches but i wear them 100% for fashion not for craftsmanship or movements. My two cents is, from the basic person perspective, is the Pressage is entirely about the dial. Thus the only way you compete with it with most people is to offer the same level of dial. So i don't care what automatic movement you put in another watch. If it ain't got a dial as good as pressage it's not competition. thus i'm not sure i agree with you that it's actual competition. Now yes, offer a pressage with an automatic that's half the price and people will buy the half price one and not care cause normal people wouldn't care it's an automatic.

This is something that makes me buy a Bulova or a Citizen instead of a Seiko. I'm going to buy the high frequency quartz that gives me better shock resistance, yearly accuracy in seconds, and a sweeping seconds hand instead of the Seiko if they insist on gimping their high quality offerings to prop up an ancient technology. Limiting your own technology is something that sounds good to business majors and may improve sales in the short term but it is disastrous in the long run. They're letting their rivals release a mid range watch that is competitive with their grand seiko quartz movements. People who are not interested in a mechanical watch should not be pushed towards buying them. They should be given watches that last them through 20 years of constant use and which are never noticeably inaccurate.
@WesWatchRoom
@WesWatchRoom 2 года назад
I agree with some points here, but in my opinion, this is no rival to anything done by grand seiko. Even if you managed to address the issues this movement has it doesn't come close to the technology in them. @@WesWatchRoom The problem with bulova is their ugly designs. Put the 262hz movement in a well designed and clean dial looking dial/case and they'll knock it out of the park. The trade off is again battery life, I think the precisionist line has a single year of battery life for the smooth sweep.

@@Shri_V If a manufacturer could put an UHF movement on a solar powered watch it would be perfect. It's annoying to see Citizen being heavily into two really good innovations here and not combining them, and until then it looks like the G-shock with radio sync + tough solar has an edge. But overall I really want manufacturers to bet more on advanced quartz movements than trying to double down on automatics, since having a movement that is good enough to not need radio sync is very useful. Yes, automatics are cool, but so is having a watch that is accurate enough to be in sync with my work's outlook. If getting an automatic comes at the cost of that, it should be marketed at mechanical watch enthusiasts only instead of being branded as a high end feature even when this comes at the cost of the mass market. Then I suppose there is the smartwatch market which just trains users to recharge their watches and which syncs its time to the local network time, and where watch faces can be set to have a continuous sweep fairly easily, but of course that isn't with a physical seconds hand and I would see that as a separate market.

Seiko/TMI/Hattori = LOVE them! You DARE show a Miyota???? BOOOOHHH!!!! BOOOOHHH!!!! BOOOOHHH!!!! The highest failure rate of all watches I bought in the last 40 years were by Citizen/Miyota! That pesky brand is only propped up by fanboys! Over a dozen bought, 2 left! JUNK! NEVER again will I buy Miyota/Citizen anything!

I an switching to automatics as quartz watches are fucking not environment friendly, same time saves in battery cell cost I purchased a seiko,orient and certina power matic,enjoy them daily

That's a great point, I suppose there is solar too but autos are definitely more friendly yes

You do know there are places to take the batteries for recycling? No one said you had to just throw the dead ones in the trash.

if you were serious about the environment you would not be buying any new watches. you would go for a 2nd hand watch and keep it forever....

Unfortunately the sweeping seconds hand shortens the battery life on what is otherwise an unremarkable quartz movement. For those of us who prefer quartz to mechanical movements, the ticking seconds hand is not a negative, but rather a signal that we are wearing something that is more accurate and durable than any mechanical. Reduced battery life, however, is not wanted.

Hey , have you ever done your homework? You can't compare a quartz with an automatic, they are both totally different types of watch. Quartz are electrical, automatic , mechanical, and have you ever seen a Seiko Elnix, or Majesta?? They both have sweeping second hands and they are from years ago. Why worry about the sweeping second hand? Seiko chronograph quartz have a sweeping second hand. I don't understand your argument.

It's not a very refined movement and Seiko isn't interested in this type of movement in their watches - simple as that. The sweep isn't that good either.

@@WesWatchRoom A "point" you tried to make, is with a very very bad and annoying approach. Keep that in mind for the futute.
