Supergirl has a super pet, the super cat Streaky. Just how did the girl of steel, the maid of might, come into contact with this super powered kitty. DC Comics introduced Streaky during the silver age. While Superboy would and eventually superman would have Krypto the Super Dog, his cousin would get a cat. Back in the silver age when Linda Lee (not yet Danvers) was still in the orphanage she stumbled upon a stray cat. Not just that but she gave it super powers by experimenting with Kryptonite. Readers were asked to write in if they wanted more Streaky, and they did. Was this super cat worth keeping around? Find out as we take a look at Streaky's first origins here on Casually Comics!

Supergirl, like Sasha, goes wherever her whims take her. It's just that Supergirl's whims lead her to switch from blue to red skirts, whereas Sasha's whims lead her to wear different wigs.

Yes, in it Streaky got his powers because a laser beam bounced off Krypto and hit Streaky.

Seeing contrasts to how Clark and Kara handle different dilemmas are always interesting. This one fits well with another story where Kara ends up caring for a superpowered toddler and can't bring herself to leave her at a Kandorian orphanage. Sometimes it feels like the writers are taking shots at past writing decisions.

My first exposure to Streaky the Super-Cat was in an reprint of the Legion story where Superboy and Supergirl get kicked out of the Legion and then quickly get readmitted. It was really intriguing to me because the writer was pulling out all the stops, throwing everything into the story, including a scene where the Legion of Substitute Heroes had to do battle with the Legion of Super-Pets. How could they possibly win? Stone Boy turned to stone and Color Kid turned him green to look like kryptonite, which scared away Krypto and Beppo. However, Streaky and Comet don't care about kryptonite because they're not Kryptonian. So, Chlorophyll Kid quickly grew some catnip to distract Streaky, while Night Girl blocked an attack from Comet with up a chunk of the sidewalk that she picked up. That left a hoofprint in the concrete and that was what the Subs were actually looking for.

I have a suggestion. You've covered Krypto, Comet, and now Streaky. Not sure if you've covered Beppo the Super-Monkey. But I know for certain that you haven't covered the complicated history of Proty yet, and I'm sure most people under the age of 50 are unfamiliar with him/her/it.

Beppo shot into space before Krypto. Both dogs and monkeys being used in the 1950s for experiments in space. Then there is Titano the Super-Ape to deal with too.

The writers massively over-estimated a cat's loyalty to its master or mistress. A super powered cat would immediately start on a plan for world dominance.

OMG, if we're on the topic of super-pets we should discuss Wonder Woman's kangaroo, Jumpa. Aside from possibly Topo (Aquaman's octopus), she is the most overlooked and forgotten super-pet of them all.

Can you imagine the trauma if they had been more realistic about Streaky's powers wearing off while in outer space?? Portrayed like something from 'the Boys'. I can imagine it - and it would have been horrific and hilarious. And probably pretty traumatic for Kara. ;-)

Your videos introduced me to Topo, and I'm very intrigued. I had to do a double-take on the scene you used - it looked at first like Topo shot those villains in ... very delicate areas. Superpets can be fun, but I do feel like they age down a story - a boy and his dog (or girl and her cat) stories just always feel pitched to a younger audience, even when the characters are adult.

Is that a bad thing? Sometimes it's nice to walk back to a tale of adolescence, especially for those of us that grew up as pets. I like my superheroes gritty and ark as the next guy, but I ... I am still looking forward to that animated movie.

Streaky was always a bit of misfire to me, Jim Mooney always drew him in a somewhat cartoony fashion, as if a Supercat was somehow inherently sillier than a Superdog. I always thought that Kara should have “inherited” Krypto’s care and feeding as part of her training. Then or now the caped canine makes an admirable therapy animal for a teenager from Krypton who just barely survived an “On the Beach” type situation. I guess this puts me in the anti Streaky faction...apologies to all you cat lovers among our host’s fanbase.

Your first superhero pet tends to be your great love and mine was actually Ace the Bat-Hound of all them. I've always been partial to German Shepherds as a breed and lo and behold as a kid, here was this dog running around with a cape and cowl. And as I recall, he got his own thought balloons too, so it was pretty cool. I still have a great fondness for Krypto and Streaky though and I'm lucky to have both of them in figure form courtesy of DC Direct that did a Superboy and Supergirl set (complete with a 'Welcome to Midvale/Smallville' reversible sign and the aforementioned Super-Pets. I had always wondered if an ongoing Krypto or Streaky (or both) book could be done, simply becauee it steps so far outside of the conventional mold whilst still having that very obvious connection. Maybe this animated movie might make it happen.

I have a fan theory about regular kryptonite: it's not actually radioactive so much as a prism that refracts yellow sun radiation into a form that is harmful to Kryptonians. For most purposes, this fan theory holds up, and it explains things like how you can crush or dissolve kryptonite and it ceases to be harmful (which is not how, say, plutonium works). X-Kryptonite is one thing that wrecks my fan theory though. If it worked like in "Superman and Lois" where you have to ingest X-Kryptonite, then I could make that work. But Streaky tosses my whole fan theory out the window. Curse you Streaky!

Regular kryptonite has been shown to give humans "kryptonite poisoning" after prolonged exposure. Lex even lost his hand because of it. Edit: accidentally hit the send button before finishing Because it doesn't say radiation poisoning your theory could be true in a way. It would just also apply to non kryptonians

Kryptonite has also been used as a "clean" energy source. ...And that never ended badly. But -this- radiation came through the lead container to effect Streaky, but not her. Kara's experiments were -powerful!-

This was an incredible video, it is amazing to see so many things from different comics that a lot of people tend to either miss or not mention, so it was really great to see this furry little fun fact have a video dedicated to it. I love all of your amazing content from this channel, it helped me learn a lot about the greater scope of the comics universe. If you don't mind, I have a recommendation for a video that I have been hoping for years that you would do a video on: either the history of the Hobgoblin in Marvel Comics and how so many people have taken the mantle, or (A personal favorite of mine) the time Spider-Man beat Hobgoblin when he was super drunk. Please make a video on this if you can, the world NEEDS to know! I am not sure if you ever heard of the second option, but please consider making it, I would love to watch a full video on this hilarious topic.

Krypto was the son of Zypto, who was the son of Nypto, who was the son of Vypto. Not making that up, there's a comic telling each of these dogs' life stories (Superboy 126). Zypto was purple and grew wings from his owner's experimental formula, which exempted him from the citywide dog purge (a dog-born virus was a big deal).

Streaky did reappear in Super-Sons and in a couple other modern stories, without explanation how she (modern Streaky is female for some reason) got her powers in the current continuity. Same deal with Comet. They're just there. At least Krypto got multiple (initially contradictory) stories justifying his return.

I was a fan of the SCPA, the Space Canine Patrol Agents, a team of super-powered dogs that once had Krypto as a member. They only appeared in three issues of Superboy in the sixties, but they were brought back in the Krypto cartoon and renamed the "Dog Stars." Chameleon Collie, Hot Dog, Mammoth Mutt, Bull Dog... they were a lot of fun.

I gave a little toddler's book about Streaky and Supergirl that came with 2 little plushies of them to my wife's cousin's daughter. She now LOVES Streaky the Supercat and I'm now hunting for more I could get her at such a young age to foster this!

I remember a letter where someone points out that they took the idea of the hair color changing comb from a reader who sent in that idea years ago. The editor finds that letter, and reprints it, saying that, yes, that did happen, but it was just a coincidence!

Ah yes, the reversible skirt excuse. Ignoring a later issue (Black Flame/Zora's first story) where we see it without the belt, the suit was clearly a one-piece. They had a chance to make their excuse canon but contradicted it instead.

Well now we Geoff Johns, when starting out at DC, clearly read the reply to that last letter, and thought 'hmm, nine lives eh? That gives me an idea on how to fix wildcat's continuity...' Possibly. Another thing you didn't have to worry about in the silver age: that the eagle would turn out to be eagly, and Peacemaker would thus turn up wanting to have a word with this cat who is disturbing the peace by smashing milk bottles, and this girl who makes a loud noise throwing kryptonite out into woodland in the middle of the night...

So X-Kryptonite was his original origin. I first heard of it from the Scooby-Doo Team-Up issue. I also like how he appeared in Supergirl: Cosmic Adventures In The Eighth Grade and the Krypto cartoon, which had different origins for his powers.

I bought the Art Balthazar book about the DC super pets. It’s got me so interested by the weirdness of the super pets.

That is so cold sending effigies to the orphanage where your cousin is. The messages it sends - like "Ha ha I've got my own merch and you don't!" or "You remember me don't you Linda - if not here's a reminder". Savage even for Silver Age Superman. I laughed more than I should have at that part!! My favorite pet is Proty mainly because it raises so many ethical questions. The main one is if Proty (a Protean) can shapeshift and has intelligence, how is he really any different than Chameleon Boy? Are they both made of the same stuff, but one is a pet and arrgghh it hurts to think about it! But it was the Silver Age, and it was all good!!

The Goofy/Pluto dilemma. The proteans were bonkers, they intentionally stripped most of their own species of sentience.
