I think that when he says 'smartphones are killing off handheld games' he's referring to now with phones like Razor phone and the S8 that have a lot of power. Back in the day of the Vita and 3Ds launch, they were pretty much the in a leauge of their own and nintendo had the advantage with bragging about their "HUGE LIBRARY" while the vita... didn't.

You can play little free or $1 games on your phone to kill time, but if you want to play actual games like Gears of War, Breath of the Wild, Skyrim, Splatoon, The Last of Us, Mario Kart, Halo, Bravely Second, Persona 5, etc you will NEVER be able to play those on a phone with phsyical buttons no matter how much technology increases. Because phones will always be touchscreen. They're never going to add joysticks to phones even if they become as powerful as consoles. Also alot of those games are exclusives to certain companies that only make software for their own platforms, so they'd never put them on phones.

No one can understand how much I wanted to play the original battlefront 2 on this thing ): I bought a bundle of star wars games that came over from psp for 40 DOLLARS,and guess what?NONE OF THEM WORK,except for lego star wars.

I think it’s a little more complicated. Sony did try to push and revive the console when sales started falling into the toilet. The big issue from the initial launch was the $250 price tag for a handheld console that required you to spend more money on a proprietary memory card. For context, the 3DS launched a year earlier with the same launch price, but it came with a 2gb memory card which could be swapped out with a normal SD card, and it was backwards compatible with physical DS games, so it was more like an upgrade than a whole new game system. Sony tried to revive the vita by lowering the price, then by relaunching it with a standard plug and 1gb of onboard storage, and it did boost sales for a bit, but the demand wasn’t high enough, and the 3DS had already become THE handheld console by that time.

I get what you're saying, and I do agree, but imagine the average parent looking for a new video game console for their kid, they don't necessarily know the technical difference between playing on a vita and playing on a cell phone. For enthusiasts it, it is a world of difference, but the average consumer isn't going to buy something that they deem a cell phone they already own can do, even if their completely wrong in that assessment

It's a fair argument. The Vita is bound by all the same constraints as a modern cell phone - like ARM CPU speed, battery life, storage. If it has all the same components as a phone (granted, with better physical UI) and the commodity phone market is pushing that tech as fast as it can be developed, then five years is a long time to be tied to that generation of tech. A lot of people upgrade their phones every two years, and they probably aren't all trying to run fancy games on them. (Not that rendering a webpage is particularly easy on a CPU these days...) Are you still using the same phone you had in 2012? Contrast that to consoles, which can afford to go big (literally - a square foot and several pounds), go fast, have lots of storage, no worries (within reason) about heat or power draw, etc. So their lease on life is a little more generous. There is the inevitable comparison to the 3DS - but keep in mind, Nintendo never pushes specs above simple and accessible gameplay. You expect hardware in a PlayStation. You expect platformers from Nintendo. And the 3DS is much more likely to find itself in the hands of young gamers that don't have smartphones to compete with, so they have more blue sky potential as well. I have no defense for the proprietary memory though. That's Sony for ya. Fighting to the bitter end.

Also every second ten year-old has a smartphone now, whether for better or worse, and among little kids the Appstore and Google play have a far easier time competing with 3DS titles than among older gamers, since the kids are less likely to be influenced by the bad reputation of mobile games and are more likely to spend time on bad f2p titles, since they aren't as experienced on the matter and generally tend to have little money. AAA 3DS titles cost forty bucks and more, and DS games are only cheap if you get them used.

None of that is meant to be a slam against the 3DS, but every living adult these days has a supercomputer in their pocket. If not two. On-screen controls might not be sufficient for a Tekken championship, or whatever the kids play these days, but for games that can and do make good use of touch controls (or, if you're so inclined, a Bluetooth controller), there's nothing holding back an iPhone or Note from being a great gaming platform. I saw an interview quote from one of the guys on the Vita team at Sony recently saying as much -- it's hard to compete with that installed base. It certainly scratches my gaming-on-the-go itch. I've got the whole SNES-era Squaresoft RPG catalog, Myst, Riven, some Sega classics, Worms, and of course some modern (designed for mobile) games as well. Plenty to keep me occupied when I find myself with some downtime. Circling back to the 3DS for a sec.... Sure, while kids have ACCESS to a smart phone, it's not theirs and sometimes mommy wants to use her own toys. Again, I'm not trying to belittle Nintendo. I do not, in fact, have a 3DS. But I do have my original Game Boy and an Advance SP. After that, I saw fewer titles that were of interest in the hand-held space, and stopped paying attention. That was probably around the point where you couldn't trip down your front stairs without running into a Pokemon reference. When I see a 3DS these days, it's usually in the hands of a 10 year old, but that could just be the local demographic here. Who knows. I'm sure there's some great software available for it, but I don't really miss it. None of that is really the point, though. Sony's having a hard time making their little "phone with a built-in controller that can't make calls" distinguish itself from other phones (with no controller.) This is of course an unfair equivocation, but it's kind of the reality. I suppose it could be my own bias seeing it that way, but apparently it's Sony's as well, so that's gotta count for something. Interestingly, the Switch is doing the same thing, but scaled up to tablet territory. It just so happens that mobile computing in that space is just powerful enough to masquerade as a petite console. They're pulling an Apple and bringing the device to market just when the underlying tech is mature enough to go mainstream, despite the fact that many have failed before. It just might work for them. It sure seems to be working, anyway. Good marketing and a solid game library sure don't hurt. Should be interesting to watch it play out at any rate.

Peto Clan You raise an interesting point. Pretty much any successful console from the past has a certain something in common: a killer IP. XBox? Halo. Sony home consoles? Uncharted, or LBP. Sega Genesis? Sonic. Anything Nintendo? Mario, Kirby, etc. The PSP had a good couple of Final Fantasy games. The Vita didn't have any particular focus. I think Tearaway was about as deep as the idea went.

I got a Walking Dead special edition Vita which came with a 4GB card, and after I bought a 32GB card, I couldn't play the Walking Dead anymore because it was on the old card which is long gone, and I didn't have the option of installing the game again... There weren't really any good games for it either. It's sad that Sony is still patching hacks because I want homebrew on my Vita but that ain't happening :/

Remote play when it works is great, playing Persona 5/HZD at work 150miles away from home. I have a lot more games on my Vita than my PS4 though so its a win win for me either way.

My Vita TV is hacked and I'm using a 500gb USB external hard drive. Has emulators all the way from the Atari 2600 to PS1, can run PSP and of course... Vita games. Netflix works on it, RU-vid works on it, HTML5 videos work on it ( anime streaming sites yay ). It's just a great little machine and I'd say that soon enough it's going to have more homebrew than the PSP... we just need more people in the hacking scene.

"Countless people" are not claiming the Vita is a bad device. You made that up. The Vita has a reputation of having an extremely lacklustre library, not one of being a bad system. And when it came out, having a Vita was not cheap at all.

i dont even have a smartphone, i have a tablet, a PC (Desktop asus) other game devices (switch, new 2ds XL, vita aqua edition, X360, wii u) and a non-smart phone (like a touch-screen, fold-out cheap little LG model...i have a data plan...text/talk/pictures & a GPS internal on phone (and its a touch screen phone) I can sign into facebook and all but its such a small phone, it doesnt work like a samsung galaxy S6, or s7/s8 or google pixel or iphone works....not big enough, cheap, and old (5 years old) atleast, ...and you know lol I just never got around (yet) to getting one, I see little reason...I have the basics of what I need (the text, unlimited, the talk unlimited, and basic GPS incase I need to find where I'm going & 411/browser if I need to look up a number or something) that I DO have...but its one of those phones from like 2009/2010/2011 (when people were at the tail-end of using blackberrys) you know the phones that have a slide-out keyboard, thats how my phone is...a slide-out keyboard....its a LG cheap black-berry-style phone w/ a data plan...basically, so I haven't upgraded to these modern larger/sleek phones. i dont know when and if I will...Ive got so many devices for gaming if i get a phone it will be just getting a phone for the sake of keeping "up" with tech ...not b/c I dont have modern conveniences, cause the phone I have works well for what I need no clue...what any of it is, or means...he has issues enough with a flip phone LOL....i had to add all his contacts in....all he knows is "green button presses to talk and red button ends conversation" lol....and honestly (despite the fact that I'm decent w/ tech and all) I really see little reason to own a smartphone (for me, not speaking for anyoen else) I know people who have business's operate online, or people like my sister who works for the state dept....does alot of face-time stuff, on facebook alot w/ friends, family * co-workers AND conference calls, hands-free blue-tooth calling stuff like that, her phone is a life-line...she backs up all her data and saves convos etc....so for her a smartphone is just more practical (but shes a klutz physically) so always replacing them, and getting new phones, new covers/cases....but throughout my 35 years (just turned 35 january 4th) I've yet to own a full fledged modern smartphone....touch screen yes, keyboard yes, data plan, browsing, GPS, all of that above....but..I find myself (even IF & when I do get a smartphone) I wont be buying apps, I wont be all of a sudden gaming on it....I mean I have Facebook (like the rest of the world, I've had my account for 8-9 years) but....and while I do log on it, and have about 100+ friends (mainly relative, friends, friends of friends, ppl I knew from school, etc) despite that I only log on once....few times a month...handful of times or so per month...and w/ a smartphone I wouldnt be using any new apps...just be using it for the same things I currently use my current phone for...if that makes any sense, a phone call, a text, and thats really it...I dont need all these smart-apps, itunes, amazon while im driving, etc etc.....when I'm home I have wifi & PC & tablet (among several devices) and access to any site, etc) + you know outside/3rd party programs...spotify, steam, blizzard launcher, etc....so I do game on devices OUTSIDE consoles & handhelds (ive done MORE then my fair share of PC gaming over the years/decades as a long-time gamer) been gaming since the late 80s....and Sony/Sega/Nintendo/Microsoft I've enjoyed them all, no bias, or blind loyalty, but as for mobile gaming (the closest I come to is) handheldsor as I say "traditional" handhelds, like PSP, PS Vita, 3DS/DS (or any DS variation) Game Boys, Sega (previous handhelds from the 90s) all the way back to the Game & Watch fromNintendo in the 80s lol.....handhelds, consoles, PCs (laptops, desktops, etc)even a little exposure to VR-gaming (though I dont own any VR machine and have no plans on anytime soon).....but Idk...something about script-based iOS games...those free app games (or games that are $8.99 from the app store) where you see commercials on TV w/ all these medieval warriors, and some b-rate actor dingbat helping promote the commercial (like Jeffrey Dean Morgan from The Walking Dead, promoting that medieval game of thrones-looking game) you laugh and go "hm...wonder how much they had to offer him to get him to dress up & promote it) like Arnold Schwarznegger promoting that Cheap Command & Conquer rip off game....alot of iOS games are shit....mainly how they are operated (control schemes) touch screen + platforming doesn't work, flappy bird, and stupid shit like that....I mean I wont deny some of them are very successful....even the Candy Crush's and Farmvilles have had their moment in the sun...my elderly mother plays a bowling game w/ her retiree friends on facebook while chatting (something to really just keep her hand'/eye coordination I guess busy while she yaps) lol same w/. candy crush (she likes gambling on occasion) so I think its that push a button, reveal a line, line up 3 or 4 in a row and get points, fill up a meter type crap that she likes, those are the kind of "any idiot can play" time game....takes no skill....just clicking.... i wont sound elitest and say all games I play take skill but....we all know theres GAMES and then theres gaymes....lol so....when it comes to gaming a PS Vita fine, even w/ sluggish sales & poor overall "north american" support....I still enjoy it for what it is...a region free semi-powerful handheld w/ a decent company backing it (atleast the hardware manufacturer) w/ some good indies/ports, and JRPGS.....I enjoy it, just like I do the New 2DS XL (I never got an original 3DS OR any DS variation, nor the new 3ds or new 3ds XL) so the New 2DS XL = first DS of ANY DS variation in 15 years, infact my last nintendo handheld was a Game Boy Color (even before the Advanced/Advanced SP line came out) so its been along time, since I was in high school lets put it that way (1997) lol...20-21 years I only recently (this past year in 2017 got a Switch...which I just got for the holidays w. a screen protector, that HORI officialy licenses stand, 128gb micro SDXC card (sandisk) + a traveling case, only thing I got left to get is a Pro Controller....and I'll have all the accessories I need (I already have a Jackery TItan Power Bank/Power Charger) that can charge my handheld gaming systems using USB Type C and keep them charged while were on the road incase we ever go on long distance travels as a family (so the relatively short battery life of the switch = no issue for me) and I have increased memory as well...anyway....I have the New 2DS XL (this model the pokemon one) + Nintendo Switch (red/blue joycon bundle) + PS Vita Slim (Aqua edition, since all PS Vitas are region free doesn't matter which color you get and where its imported from) once you setup account, boom - North America/English. So I have all 3 handhelds (current) ....as well as several consoles & PC & my tablet (is an older Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1) 16GB model, prob at the end of its life cycle I may need a new one at some p oint in a year or less....but w/ all these devices (and me being home more then I am on the road or at work) when Im on road or at work its only for short bursts of time) I have 0 reason for a smartphone....i dont giggle, and take snap-shots (selfies w/ filters) i dont do facetime, i dont do GPS (when am I ever rarely OUT of my comfort zone/local area ? almost never is the answer)....I dont travel much...you know long distances so...I have little reason for a smartphone...id know what would happen, id end up buying one and....regretting it....$600, $700, $800, $900 for a "base retail" price...I mean I know the Ipad Pro 12.9" is (the 256gb or 512gb models) with the A10X fusion chip (thats basically a damn laptop considering its power) or a Microsoft Surface Pro (current model) I realize those tablets are damn near $900, or even more $1,000 if nt more...but those are used for alot more then a phone is....they can do everything a regular PC can (almost) and alot of photography, and art-related stuff, professionals, developers, artists would utilize/make use out of a Ipad Pro 12.9"...thats a big, sexy, sleek device....id make MORE use out of that, honestly then I would a smartphone at this point...I realize you dont have to spend retail price on a phone, you just setup a plan w/ verizon or AT&T/sprint (whomever) and get a data plan + protection plan and setup a monthly payment but still even that runs in the hundreds often...like a small mortgage....its getting alittle out of hand if you ask me....but I do consider at times (in my head) like "hmm...maybe...maybe this year....ill get a S8+ w/ unlimited bundle plan....yea maybe...." lol but I never do, who knows maybe this will be the year.

I really wish that the vita was more successful. I honestly love it as a handheld. I love playing all of the sly cooper games on the go, I loved playing ps1 games, I loved the remote play option. But they went wrong with the memory card. If they had micro sd support they would have been fine but they went with overpriced cards.

Install it, set up sd2vita ( micro sd adapter that goes in game slot) , nonpdrm ( plug plugin to use nopaystatio , pkgj ( or NPS browser on PC to download games for free ) and adrenaline ( psp emulator that also runs psx) I recently got myself a second vita ( white 3g oled vita ) for the sole purpose of modding. Rn I use psvsd( micro sd adapter that replaces the internal 3g module), 128gb micro sd and 4gb vita memory card. Micro sd is for storing games and the 4gb memory card is used store the main system mod files. Plus psvsd allows me to keep my game slot open for my physical games.
