Why Does Time Move Forward? 

I thought I was going crazy trying to fall asleep to this. My arrow of time was all messed up with all the repetition causing deja Vu.

How? Memory is like a foot print in your physical brain. It fades and could even get washed away any moment.

True. Every few minutes, in normal time, he repeats almost exactly, the steps outlined 5 minutes prior, back in time. I gave up expecting the topic to be expanded as time progressed.

Right? I was under the impression that ourselves, and other objects "move" through time somehow. It certainly seems like we are severely limited in our perception.

@@bryandraughn9830I’d say we are falling behind of time moving forward. That would explain why the faster we move the slower time goes by. Imagine the first radiation leaving the Big Bang and starting time. That radiation has travelled the entire universe already and we are just trying to catch up. The catching up is what is giving us the feeling of time but is only us trying to catch up to the rest of the universe. Black holes are points where matter catches up to the beginning of the universe and therefore reaching the end of time.

Who says what we experience is forward.

Yes, time and space are definitely related, just not dimensionally. Gravity has a lot to say about both.

Anything existing in a dimension cannot experience the next one.

If you wanted to be at some place at a certain time, you need all four dimensions to do that.

@@Dabmonger now imagine there were 3 dimensions of time. Where if you went back in time, you wouldn't be going back to what you remember but to a completely different location in the fourth dimension. The past you remember having nothing to do with actual time travel. Time not being what we perceive it to be because of entropy, but instead to be an actual coordinate in 4d.

This is actually quite a good question. Yes, (the reach of) gravity travels at the speed of light, and light itself, though massless, is affected by gravity. And you are quite correct that a black holes gravitational field emanates from below the event horizon, and in fact its entire mass is located at that singular point at its centre. But just as light doesn't inhibit or block other light itself, likewise, gravity isn't 'affected' by gravity, so to speak. Hope that helps. Have a great day!

Light speed is actually the speed of causality not an actuall light itself. However, gravity is not causality, it IS the cause. So it is exempt of this rule, and only things affected by it are affected on the speed limit of causality.

And besides that, the 'c' in E=mc² stands for 'velocity', _not_ 'causality' (though that is in effect what it translates to). I think it was actually a really clever question, to ask *"how can gravitational mass influence objects that lie beyond a horizon from which absolutely nothing **_inside_** the horizon can interact with anything **_outside_** of it."* In fact I think it's a _great_ question! I wish I'd considered it myself (before reading it here, of course). Now, bearing in mind that I'm certainly no physicist, I agree with your conjecture that (as I originally noted above) gravity is not impeded by itself, and thus this particular paradox is proven not to exist within the model of general relativity. And yet... well, that answer _still_ feels slightly unsatisfactory. For if gravity is not affected by itself then how does it _affect_ mass at all? Mass is matter, and matter is energy, and energy is frequency, and frequency is a wave, and gravity is a wave travelling at 'c', so... I think it's a fair enough question to ask, and it's just one more example of how looking at black holes really brings to the fore some of the most fundamental questions in foundational physics. As the saying's from the business world go "if you can't understand what the problem is, then you can't solve it", and "if you can write down the problem as a question then you are already half-way to solving it". And so, yes, I think it's a really great question! Besides simply stating the bald fact that gravity isn't influenced by itself, there _are_ other ways of looking at the issue. First, gravity in general relativity is described not as being a force, but simply as the curvature of space itself. And in this picture the causality horizon sits at some point around the gravitational well caused by the mass within the black hole, but that well still extends beyond the horizon, it's just that nothing can escape once it's below that mark. Second, the holographic principle says that all the mass of objects that approach a black holes horizon become 'smeared' out on the surface as they cross the horizon itself (thus creating a 'fire-wall'). So, in that way all the mass is actually _on_ the horizon, and not _below_ it. Gravity is not affected by itself, but the question still makes you think, and thinking is, sadly, a very rare commodity these days! 🙏

Don’t think of gravity as a force but space time that is bent. In a black hole, space time is bent to such an extent that all directions point inwards.

@@bobsmith9571 Thats because since everything is moving speeding up is actually slowing down relative to all this motion. So te fastest thing (that we know of ) light is actually the slowest thing, absolute standstill. And if you slowed down to absolute stand still, then you dont interact with anything thefore you cant dont age. And time as we know it doesnt exist. But also you cant exist in this state since your atoms dont even interact in this state because they've slowed down too, to the point of no motion therefore interation, therefore time. Weather we can be consiouse in this state is unkown and still a possiblity that after all atoms have stoped moving , does conciouseness still exist? Would be interseting to find out. Anyawy thats if you beleive light is absolute standstill, i dont think it is. It just the fastest thing (aka slowest relative to all this motioin) we discovererd.

What do you mean we don’t know lol? It’s not a question whether or not it can move backwards. Time is a concept. It’s how man measures, records, and observes change. Time moves in one direction and that’s forward. That’s how it works because that’s how we made it work. It’s not matter. It’s not an element. We can’t alter, touch, see, change, or make it do anything.
