Adele most likely will never flop because she caters to middle aged and older aged adults as much as she does the teens and younger adults. Her fanbase is multi-generational. She has the zoomers, millennials, Gen Xers, baby boomers, and even those from the silent generation who are still alive. No other pop star during this time has that kind of fanbase. That's why she sells records faster than virtually everyone in the music industry. Unless she pulls a Lauryn Hill and put her career to an abrupt end, she will be at the very top for at least another 10 years.

I vibed with her as a 13 year old kid, when I didn't know anything about life so of course she would have the ability to connect to folks who have experienced life and can relate to her lyrics

@@derrick1491 now that you've mentioned it, i just listened and was awestruck by her "Miseducation" album. Ex-factor and Nothing Really Matters are my favourite songs. Her career was short lifed but extremely impactful. No wonder why many people respect her as an artist. Too bad, she has many personal problems going on which led to not releasing any album.

I think her personality of being brutally honest and very British makes Americans love her. She comes across as someone relatable without having to try. She’s just herself and makes her authentic. Also, her subjects, she writes about love mainly. Everyone can relate to it. I’ll put in here, love doesn’t mean a relationship. It can be friends, family ext.

Very true!!! Adele may be the most relatable pop star without ever having to push a specific message or idea with her music. Love is very much universal, as love is beyond romance. I think a lot of other pop stars may be tied to a specific theme in their music that isn't so universal, thus they don't cater to broader audiences.

Interesting. Physical appearance is always something that unfortunately people will be criticized for, regardless of the change. I do hope nothing happens to Adele. Many people, from what I've seen, have congratulated her! I've also seen some people saying stuff along the lines of "now she's beautiful", which is sick, because she's always been stunning!

Yes! She comes in, drops an amazing record, gets tons of praise and vanishes. Rinse and repeat! She never strains herself with super long cycles or over exposure which makes her that much more wanted by the public.

Very interesting point about her being British. I think that's also something that in a way, is "interesting" to American audiences. I couldn't necessarily pinpoint why except for other well known British artists.

I love all type of artists, not necesarilly cause of her country, but there's something about british artists which makes them so good, America has great artists too but even americans fell in love with british artists, and most of them are so succesful like The Beatles, Queen, etc. And british artists are in some way a little bit apart from the music industry sometimes and they aren't that pushed hard sometimes, there are exceptions as well

@@dontmindme5163 i think those are qualities that distinguish them from other artists, like thing thing w adele that's incredibly similar to mariah leading mariah to be so successful for two decades is that they both have a powerful voice and songwriting abilities, they have more than one thing that makes them unique to other people. like if whitney didn't have that voice i don't think she would be successful and if taylor didn't have her songwriting ingenuity she also wouldn't be successful. artists that are typically more successful have more unique abilities that distance themselves from other people in the music industry. the reason why adele is so successful (doesn't flop) is because we recognize all of those talents that she has, this kinda separates her from mariah where ppl didn't recognize the fact that she's written her discography.

Adele has the same effect Lorde has. There's something so mystique about them that it doesn't matter how long they spent making new music, we're just there, waiting for them to feed us something lol. I think it's part of their thing by now. Also, I think Adele has a particular sound that could make dropping music constantly a little boring or predictable. As you say, she doesn't change much between eras, wich is cool if you have 5 years in between, but idk if it would work if her hiatuses were least spaced. Awesome video❤️❤️

Adele's appeal is the same as Barbara Streisand or Whitney Houston or Susan Boyle (yes, Susan Boyle moves units) or Mariah's biggest singles: People love adult contemporary ballads. They will never be trendy, but they will also never be obsolete. The trick is selling adult contempo that also is interesting/relatable to younger demographics and Adele and her team have found a consistent way to do it. (That's why Lewis Capaldi is successful atm and why Sam Smith was also in the past -- I think he needs to return to that sound if he wants to repeat his past success.)

Yes Susan (discovered in May 2009) outsold Lady Gaga worldwide in 2009 and almost in 2010 again with her albums despite that were Gaga‘s biggest years. In the end you need the voice for them and that is a fift from god. Now you need a high profile composer team to create the right music and BOOM!

Yeah the Whitney Houston comparison is especially true, a lot of people clowned her for singing middle of the road “elevator music” but it sold tens of millions of albums. And whenever she changed her sound to be more trendy the records would underperform. Adele should stick to her formula for as long as she can

I would add that, I just feel like people see in her what they saw in the voice and the style of the vocal trinity when it was in its prime: Celine, Mariah, Whitney. They miss that era of music and Adele is kinda like a comeback to it while still modern. At least that's how I see it. Although 2 of them are still alive, ageism is kinda hurting them bad but Adele is younger.

Ageism is more so, not exactly because of their age. Look, when I was 12 I didn't give a shit that Cher was like 45 or something when Believe came out and topped the charts. It's just that creative output takes a lot of energy and perhaps the older artists have said what they felt they need, put out what they think they needed over two decades+, they are good now and don't want to enter that race for the top anymore. It's exhausting stuff for anyone.

I remember reading an article about Adele a few years ago which said that because she is appealing to older women that she outsells everyone. Older women are more likely to buy albums whereas younger people are less likely to buy albums.

I think the other re-recordings will sell less than Fearless. Her big comeback will be with a brand new album, not until then - she will get real success again.

I wonder how her new looks are going to affect sales and her perception by the public. Don't get me wrong, I love how she looks and that she looks happy and comfortable in her skin (which is what matters), but I mean that she is no longer the "average looking girl" with a powerhouse voice. Very interesting! I think we can only make any conclusions after she starts releasing music. Will she change her image? Her performances, her costuming, her music, etc. I don't see her straying from her usual looks that will make her bleed into a "normal pop star" type of look - if that makes sense. But, we'll just have to see!

Why he have to postpone? He has his own fans. I mean if the album is good, I'm sure it'll debut no#1. I'm a fan of Panic! At The Disco, remember when Panic! got their first no. #1 album in early 2016, pushed back Adele 25 and David Bowie to number #2 and #3, while Dangerous Woman by Ariana failed to debut no#1, it's blocked by Views (Drake). If the album is good, the fans will buy it, no matter how big or small your subscriber.

I would also like to add that Adele’s fandom is not toxic unlike any other fandom there is. Let’s also recognize that she’s a writer not just a singer. It’s very easy to find someone who can sing, but to write and sing your own songs are a different level. This brings out her personality. She sings with her heart. Her songs really mean something important. They have soul and purpose. All her álbums show an artist true to herself and what she wants to sing. When i heard her songs they gave me chills, and they still do till this day. I Love and appreciate this type of music, i know that with her i will feel emotions. Sad, happy. But they make you feel. 21 is to me a masterpiece, i listen to this álbum all the time. Hello from 25 is already ICONIC. Adele is unique, no one is even similar to her!

I agree. I have no doubt she'll easily sell more than 1,000,000 in the debut. "folklore" is the highest debut of 2020 with 846,000 units (615,000 pure sales). Given that being UP from "Lover". In 3 weeks, "folklore" sold 1,000,000 units. I would guess Adele could move a pure sales range of 900,000 - 1,500,000. I expect it to be down from "25", but I really couldn't gauge by how much.

Because her songs can last the test of times and music trends. Her spngs are appropriate for all, unlike most pop artist now a days whos songs are trendy, but can for example: WAP be sung when Cardi is 60+ without it feeling weird? Even Beyonce's recent songs are kinda in trend, and young demographic appropriate. The difference between songs today and back then are that songs today won't stand the test of times. Just look at the legends; Mariah, Celine and Whitney as an example, their songs from the 90's can last the rest of their careers because the lyrics are of quality, and it can transcend trendy lyrics and the trend of vulgarity and sex appeal. Their lyrics is more emotional based, and so is Adele's. The lyrics in their discography has class.

That's a great point! I'm very much all for artists singing what they want to - but this is a very true point. Certain artists have discography that is just timeless and thus appeals to broader audiences because of its content, and is music that can be performed years from now and still be fresh. While some songs may still be good with more explicit content, I think music like that sometimes ends up having a time stamp on it, and an expiration date.

But I also think there is a balance that needs to be maintained when it comes to longevity of songs. My observations has been that love songs still stand true no matter what age or culture because that is something that almost every person has felt og will feel and go through. Many songs nowadays cater to more specific demographics. And even anthem songs cater to demographics. But I do think that music today will be more nostalgic songs than classics. I do get nostalgic when listenting to songs from 2015, but I envision that I could still be singing ballads of the greats in 50+ years. And yeah, ballads may be the kinds of songs that most people have a soft spot for? They are mostly the ones that stand the test of times. (At least the non-cheezy ones)

But keep in mind there is always a demand because people want to be entertained by the trends we have right now. We are testing out new things and at that point we also need entertainers who chase and work on those current trends. Even if the trend totally dies and nothing has a meaning after 30 years anymore, we had fun so it was great while it lasted. This is just how the world works.

Let's take "Who Run the World" or "Feelin myself" "Bow Down", I don't think they are songs that she would be singing when she is 60+ without it feeling weird. Compared to "Halo", "Listen", "1+1", "Love on Top", they are the kinds of song that she could be singing til she is 90. And I think it is because of the lyrical contents, and those kinds of song are more timeless and can transcend through generartions. Of course artists should experiment and do whatever they want. But my point was more " What makes a song a classic and timeless?" Because there are many songs fra the past that hasn't aged well, but were trendy back then or were experimental for artists, but there must be a factor that separates classics that have lasted and aged well. Let's take Mimi; "Vision of Love" "Emotions" "Forever" "Underneath the Stars" ( and soo much more of her first few albums) are song she can sing the rest of her career becausr there is a certain quality to the lyrics. That is just my theory, and I think it is interessting. It has nothing to do with artistry of an artist, but something to do with the relation of music and people.

I think her next era is gonna be more pop. 25 is definitely more pop than 21. In 25, she worked with Max Martin and Shellback (I think) and they are the biggest pop producers of our generation. I think this next album will be more pop, but she will obviously maintain her old sound. I don’t think you can say “omg I want the old Adele”. Before 21 the billboard charts was full of auto tuned vocal electro pop bangers with the artists following it with outrageous visuals, fashion style and overall persona primarily thanks to lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Kesha, however, that changed with 21 electro pop was still present on the billboard charts but it changed post-2011 with more alternative, indie pop music and less auto tuned/more raw powerful vocals. You can say it foreshadowed the breakthrough success Lana Del Rey, frank ocean and Ed Sheeran experiences in 2012-2013. And then you got 25 that happened when streaming was taking and still took over the music industry but following Taylor swift’s 1989, Nicki minaj’s the pink print and Beyoncé’s 2013 self titled release, 25 was merging physical releases/sales being able to gasp with streaming and digital downloading. I personally love Adele, she’s one of the best vocalists/songwriters in contemporary pop music her music is amazing and changed the scope to the culture. Very true! I think we could even say Adele is an "anti-pop star". She isn't down with colorful wigs or bizarre videos or super insane touring set pieces. I think the fact her career has been so down to earth has helped her define a different version of what it means to not only be popular in music, but a popular woman in music. And she did say " my next album will only be called *Adele*" we don't know if this was just something she thought at that moment or if that is actually the title of her next album.

She's hosting Saturday Night Live this upcoming Saturday, after literally being out of the public eye since about 2017, so many people are speculating this means she is going to announce music. Someone pointed out, Adele wouldn't just reemerge to host a show - there has to be something more.

I understand that perspective. Of course, only time will tell. However, given her track record and approach to music, even without extreme change in her music, she still has success. I would argue her "risks" are these long hiatuses she takes. Those don't always guarantee a huge comeback, but for her, they do.

Mariah is amazing. She has a more interesting catalogue of songs then Adele because she drops always something different. Her first albums where pop than she starts taking risks an got more R&B and I don't talk about her Remixes and features with HipHop artists. Mariah did more for Music than Adele will ever be.

because she appeals to older folks who actually buy records and younger folks who stream depressing music. not to mention she’s white and relatively uncontroversial. no shade to her. keep in mind she’s also only 3 records in. lots of artists don’t flop till their 4th or 5th records.

Agreed! I don't think she'll do poorly honestly. I think it'll be interesting to see how she'll promote the record during the current COVID-19 pandemic. THAT may be what hurts the record, not necessarily anything she's going to do.

In the end, everyone will „flop“. Older people now supporting die or stop caring about music in general. Younger people support their generations great instead of an older women. Attracting new audiences has always been a problem for older acts decades in the business. And than the newer generation tends to compare you up to your old standard which is impossible to hold for decades to come.
