Why Don't English Clubs Dominate In Europe?

The Premier League is by far the biggest and richest league in Europe, yet Premier League teams have only won six out of the last 24 UEFA Champions Leagues, four out of the last 24 UEFA Europa Leagues, and Newcastle United and Manchester United were knocked out of this season's Champions League in the group stage, both finishing bottom of their groups.
So in this video, HITC Sevens takes a look at English clubs in Europe, both past and present, the reasons for their success or lack thereof, and attempts to answer the question of why Premier League teams aren't more dominant in European competitions.

Because spending $40m on some random dude who had a good season in the championship doesn't actually make that player better than his $2m Venezuelan equivalent that Sevilla may pick up

Premier league is popular because, aside from the massive marketing drive and it's language being English, it pulls in American and Asian spectators/fans way more than the other leagues. This is due to it's ability to grab a channel-flicker's attention who would usually change channel after 5 minutes of watching Spanish or Mexican players lump the ball from side to side jogging about. The pace of the PL games and the excitement it generates is a big reason so many watch it above other leagues

This coment is posted on a video about english club who receive stupid amount of TV money every year, now even a small premier league club with no history is richer than most historical clubs in Italy, France, Germany or Spain. Big clubs in these country (not called Bayern, Madrid, Milan or Paris) lose their best players to PL clubs, can't buy good prospect because PL always has the highest bid, and even struggle to keep their best player against championships team now, the situation is out of hands, this is fucking ridicoulous, but the problem is PSG right ?

Another impact of the Heysel ban was that, since English clubs weren't competing in Europe, the league's UEFA coefficient fell to 0, so even when the ban was lifted, they had fewer European berths than they otherwise would have done. It took until the mid-90s for England to build up enough coefficient points to max out their UEFA Cup berths, and until 2001-02 to get the four Champions League places that we're now so accustomed to having. So it wasn't just that the other Big Five leagues were tactically ahead of England during the 90s, they also simply had more bites of the cherry than England did.

Well the Champions League also expanded in the late 90s and then again in the early 2000s. It was much smaller when it first changed to that name. So originally if you won your league you qualified. Manchester United actually hit the ground running in Europe winning the cup winners cup against Cruyff's Barcalona (1991). Barca would win the champions league the next year. United finished 5th in Division 1 that season (Arsenal dominated Division 1 that year losing 1 game and conceeding 18 goals, surprisingly shipping 6 at home in the league cup to Man United both playing strong sides). Arsenal would win the cup winners cup competition in 1994 (having done a domestic cup double in 1993) and Chelsea in 1998. So of a possible 24 European competitions after readmission (not counting the super cup) English teams won 4 trophies in the 90s. The UEFA cup being the worst performing competition for English teams. We also have to remember that until the late 90s there were foreigner restrictions in European competition that did not apply to English domestic league football, although they did have such rules in other leagues. So Rep Irish, Nor Irish, Welsh and Scots players were considered foreign for English clubs. Currently the rule is that if you were at club for 3 years when under a certain age you are home grown. So for example Ryan Giggs and Roy Keane were foreign, but with current rules Giggs would be home grown at club and Keane would be home grown at England, for being at Nottingham Forest for the required formative years.

I remember a video from the aftermath of the 2012 Champions League Final which sums up the situation: After Chelsea beat Bayern in the most dramatic circumstances, a Chelsea fan came out of the stadium beaming and his first words were: "now Tottenham are out of the Champions League" Not "We are Champions of Europe" or anything like that, but the fact they had demoted fourth placed Spurs to the Europa League. Simple: except for Liverpool, other top PL clubs aren't run well at all. Just look at Inter, I swear if any PL team had the same budget Inter had over the last three seasons, they wouldn't even have gotten into UCL spots in Serie A: however, Marotta and Inzaghi were able to acquire fantastic players for free that no-one cared about ('cause they weren't the "80mln generational talent" or "the next ..." or shit like that) that suited a predefinite project and style of play, and there you have now a team that is one of the main candidates for UCL and that is destroying its league, while being put at the same level of Real Madrid. PL teams care much more about spending too much for players whose value is not the money spent rather than building a stable and well run football project with players suiting that project itself

I think the standard of coaching in the EPL is really low. Apart from Guardiola, Klopp and maybe De Zerbi or Arteta, I think most managers are just ok. Take a look at Arsenal last week against Porto, complete tactical domination from Porto, not a single shot on target and yet in the EPL they keep scoring 4, 5 or 6 goals. Its not an english thing only though. Some teams from other leagues still dont take uel and uecl seriously. Just look lazio last season vs this one as one example but you can find much more of them. And i think another reason why epl teams are not as dominant as they could be is that financial disparity matters less if clubs charge 2 or 3 times more when epl comes for a player. Antony is great example for that. In the same year another club wanted him and price was reasonable. But as soon as man united wanted him the price skyrocketed. Its pretty insane actually

Direct comparison between the leagues' income ignores a few important points in this. As an example, Real Madrid and Barcelona, due to the way La Liga is setup and each team manages its own tv rights, get most of the money that their league makes which is much more than the rest in the league. They make more than any English club. PL is more based on American leagues, so the league sells the rights and makes the money, and then contributes it between teams.

I think it would have been nice to compare the Premier League/European football to the Brazillian Serie A/South American football. In SA Brazil has the richest league by far, and dominates continental competitions. However, there are significant differences to England. First, SA has many fewer countries, so Brazil gets 7-8 teams to qualify for the Libertadores, which makes it very likely one of them wins the competition (has happened in the last 5). Second, even the biggest opposition in SA are not as rich as most brazillian teams (maybe River and Boca, but they aren't very good right now). Some cool things to notice is that Brazillians can also very much win the Libertadores while being 5th, 6th, or 7th in the league (Fluminense just did that), because the league is so competitive. Another funny thing is how Ecuadorians usually beat Brazillians in finals.

This commentator is a cry baby. Blaming the current dearth of trophies on a 30-year-old ban is pathetic. English football is good and exciting, but it's too predictable. It lacks new ideas. Continental football is smarter and more innovative.

imo, one of the possible reasons is that money isn't always everything, especially this year with inter and bayern leverkusen

Quite simply: EPL is about pace and power, no technical skills needed to succeed there. Clubs in Europe have more technical skills and do not reply on just pace and power fore their game. English clubs fail because once their pace and power is nullified, they have nothing else in terms of a Plan B.

This is such a ridiculous notion man, the premier league is also the most technically gifted league and tactically gifted. Just because players don't have the space and time to do fantastic dribbles every single play doesn't mean the technical gifts aren't there.

@WalkerIGP

@@TobiasElmendorfNo it isn't, it is well known that other leagues are more technically gifted than the EPL. I watch the EPL week in and week out, it is my favorite league and technical skills are not used nearly enough in it. Lots of pace going up and down the pitch and using physical strength to body defenders. The kind of technical skills that you see in Brazilian players or in a Messi type you don't see in the EPL you have to watch La Liga or Ligue 1 to see those.
@TobiasElmendorf
@TobiasElmendorf 3 месяца назад
@@WalkerIGP I just think that comes down to style of play and pressing though. Just because Neymar isn't dancing through the entire team doesn't mean that technical skill isn't as good as other leagues, it is just shown in different ways, instead of dribbling and having the space to dribble more freely, it is the types of turns and beating a man 1 v 1 in close quarters in the midfield to beat a press.
@WalkerIGP
@WalkerIGP 3 месяца назад
@@TobiasElmendorfYou mentioned Neymar but Neymar has never played in the EPL. If you want players in the EPL that actually try to use technical skills, Doku and Foden at Man City are two good examples. They actually try to use the dribbles, turns etc in their play. They are in the minority though. The league as a whole doesn't do this stuff compared to other leagues.

Why did English teams do so well pre-1985? Liverpool (and Leeds to a lesser degree). Why did English teams do so poorly post-1992? Liverpool, again. Given that English teams were banned for 6 years, they've done well. Total UEFA champions League wins: Spain - 19 England - 15 Just imagine what these stats would be like if that ban had never occurred.

Two all English finals recently, 2019 and 2021, and a team in a final almost every year recently, multiple teams in a semi-final most years, I’d say that’s pretty dominating.

And it Should have been 3 EPL finals in 5 years but for a miracle comeback. That would have ended this debate. City were far superior over both legs. 2019 both finals were all English clubs.

The financial gap the Prem has over other leagues is exactly why the idea of a Super League came about…u have Chelsea alone spending more than 3 of the top 5 league combined and that’s including la liga and Bundesliga….soon other leagues won’t be able to sign players because of EPL money…and ofc no one would say it’s a problem

Its because the biggest difference in money isnt by the top clubs in the leagues, like English top clubs dont spend that much more than Real Madrid, Bayern, PSG etc. The big difference is between the middle to lower part of the table teams like Nottingham and Bournemouth spend compared to what Cadiz, Empoli and Bochum spend. Edit: I wrote this before watching the rest of the video and he is exactly right
