People keep saying because conditioning but its genetics north western Europeans are known to age really quick giving them thin skin nobody can deny Shawn Rhoden's conditioning is great one reason why he has such great conditioning is because he is old an his skin is getting thinner same with Dexter Jackson it's impossible to beat people with thin skin in conditioning especially if you're younger or don't got the genetics like Dorian Yates had people tend to not take this in to account.

@@ruslankbr5243 shape has to do alot with good muscle symmetry and V-Taper. I think with Yates bicep that just throws his symmetry off and Yates wasnt known for his V-Taper although his lats did help improve his V-Taper but not enough to beat Curry with his wasp like waist. But i think with Curry's smaller waist and a wider back then Yates, he has a much better V-Taper. I will give Yates the nod over Curry with his granite type dry leaness. The mass they both carry is comparable with their frames. Yates granite conditioning was something, but i think theres more positives to curry. Yates granite conditioning was alot better than Ronnie but Ronnie during his Mr O reign would be Yates every time with size and V-Taper. Just my 10 cent opinion 😁.

Sure he would crack the top 6 in the 90's, Dorian was just being mean hahaha However, there's a "high quality" video of the 97 Olympia on RU-vid (under some russian name) that shows that even with all the flaws yates had on that year, his back was the best that it ever was and his conditioning was SO SUPERIOR to Nasser that you can't help it but to admire it. It was controversial yes, cause on paper you can't win with one arm, bad symmetry and bloated stomach (even though it wasn't as bad as people say), but looking at that video the massive difference in conditioning and the granite hard look dorian had (especially from the back) also makes it hard to say that he wasn't mr. O that year. So to sum up, maybe seeing that granite like hard conditioning in person is so overwhelming that it eclipses some of the other possible qualities that one might have

Modern (2010's) bodybuilders get a lot of hate, which I honestly think is undeserved. Sure, the depth of the 90's is greater, but many of the modern top guys (Kai, Ramy, Bonac, etc) would fair pretty damn well in even the best 90's lineup. Would they win? Probably not. But they'd be a damn big threat.
@MikeKayK
@MikeKayK 4 года назад
The modern top guys wouldn't have been doing the same drugs back in the 90's, so neither you nor anyone else has any idea how they would look or how they would fair had they been born 20 years earlier.
@herculssatan5883
@herculssatan5883 4 года назад
@@MikeKayK Well, we can't say exactly what they would look like, but we can assume that they'd look pretty much the same as the rest of the 90's bodybuilders at the time, since they'd be on the same drugs. But that's not the point, most critics claim that modern day bodybuilders, AS THEY LOOK, would not fair well. That simply isn't true. Modern mass monsters like Kai or Ramy would dominate lineups, losing only to the absolute elite like Dorian or Ronnie. Even if we compare 90's and modern bodybuilders with similar traits, modern usually wins. Ramy and Nasser? Ramy is bigger, more complete with a better back. Wouldn't be easy but Ramy would most likely take it. Or what about two shorter bodybuilders, like Shawn Ray and William Bonac? Bonac is ridiculously thick and complete, and is usually pretty sharp. I have difficulty believing Shawn could win. The list goes on.

BB is, and has always been a visual-sport. People tends to forget that, over and over again. Same thing every year... Guy X post a pic where he weights 320 pounds something 8 weeks out of Mr. O say´s just about nothing on the day evening competition is held. You can absolutely NOT see the difference between 20-25 pounds different. You who seriously follow this sport, of course, knows this. But for an average guy, just training to keep himself a little fit. For him it´s a complete different story: "hey, this guy was 320 pounds just 6 weeks out. He must be a "runner-up". Well, a guy with small joints, hips and a narrow waist line easily destroys a 30-40 pounds heavier guy if THAT guy has wide hips, thick ankels and a wide mid-section. Look att Dexter Jackson. Had the fortune to see him here in Sweden 2004. He was handed out trophies to all the winners. At the same time I saw Thomas Stellander, a norweigen guy, pumping up. Heawyweigt-class and famous for his 24 inch arms. But "Blocky" all the way... He was in contest shape, of course. Probably out-weight Dexter with 30-40 pounds and standing at the podium as a winner. All in the audience shouted: " of with the shirt, Dexter, of with the shirt. Dexter did that and BANG. Itwas just embarricing..)-; Stellander looked small in comparison and Dexter wasn´t in any contest-shape. More like decent seminarium-shape. 10-0 for Dexter... He had this "flow" in the physiq as Arnold had. As Lee Hayney had. The "flow" that is so necessery to win major titles and be a True/Great Champion... Can´t buy love for money... Either you have it or you don´t. To some degree you can "polish" your physiq BUT you need to be born with that kind of genetics- Simple as that.. And when I´m at it. All this talk about "mass-monster". How come that Dexter Jackson STILL can place as high as top 6. He has never been a true "mass-monster" in any way. 216 pounds (98 kg) competition shape. 235 lb (107 kg) (Off-Season). Competing for, what is it? Over 20 years now? Sorry, but who gives a F**K about some guy posting 320-340 pounds 6-8 week before Mr. Olympia and still get beaten buy Dexter... Sorry, long text and got carried away BUT you get my point, right? Didn¨t even nedded to right that last sentence. Of course, you get it.. From Sweden. Apologize for bad english but you catch my drift, I think...

Adam Schwartz You know something else that occurred to me today as I sat contemplating the weighty (pun totally intended) issues of the world... As I’ve gotten older (I’m 42), I have noticed unintended consequences and examples of cause and effect that weren’t as obvious to me as a younger guy. Something I’ve never heard discussed before regarding the change in quality of physiques in pro BB is the lifestyles of the guys before they started as well as prevailing ideas about things like nutrition when they got started. For instance, you take Larry Scott. What does he have in common with contemporary pros? It’s all about size for them. In Scott’s day, everyone was consuming as many calories as possible through whole or raw milk, whole eggs, liver, a lot of dairy etc... Guys today are all about looking full and putting on and keeping as much size as possible without being penalized by the judges. They inhale as much food as possible and don’t put out as much effort pre-contest as the guys from the early 70’s through the late 90’s. The guys from the 70’s - 90’s became progressively more focused on conditioning overall. Of course over time, AAS use became more involved, supplements got more advanced, and various training styles were debated and tried out. The two things most of those guys had in common were VERY hard training and increasingly more suffering to attain insane conditioning for their shows. One thing all of those guys, from Eugene Sandow to Coleman, had in common was a predisposition for athletics in their youth and not nearly as many distractions that would keep them sedentary. Back in the day, they had to work outside the sport and tended to keep themselves busy while maintaining a fairly balanced diet. These days, broadly speaking, the top pros are kept men. They are paid to train, paid to eat, and don’t do shit outside the gym because lord knows mowing your own lawn will make a person flat and it’s 20 weeks until the show! Gotta keep that fullness! Workouts consist of a lot of pumping exercises and five minutes after the workout is over, they’re in the locker room taking selfies for Instagram, barely breaking a sweat. Half of these guys breath hard in between sets these days it seems. In between their 8 meals a day, heavy black market AAS use ( that’s another BIG factor), and multiple Ambien fueled naps throughout the day, they occupy themselves with social media and a PlayStation. What I’m seeing is a generation of guys who grew up on video games and internet bro science when every self respecting bodybuilder, from novice to Mr. O, had someone doing their “diet” (hahaha), and a training guru. None of these guys knows their body anymore, but they can damn sure time their Humulin injections to the minute. Priorities, I guess. It pains me to say this out loud, but dammit...it was better in my day.

@@WHATISUTUBE - I don't think it's quite like that. But fair enough to be reminded of it (size is always a big component though, before Ramy). The size defence legitimately applies for Big Ramy. He would always be placing right up the top based primarily on mass, except last time (although his conditioning generally isn't thattt bad, since there's always guys not far behind him who have pretty lame conditioning). The problem is when people say Ramy should be placing nigh first, by putting way too much weight on his size. But that's not at all what Tomn8er is saying should happen with Curry in a 90s lineup. Just that he could at least pick off the stragglers who would be dwarfed and who didn't have good conditioning to potentially save their ass anyway. People often have a narrative, or an idea in their head, but then when you take the time to actually examine said narrative or idea, it's not always how one imagines it to be. Or perhaps they weren't looking at it in a realistic fashion, or maybe they didn't look at it from other angles (often literally in this case). There's a lot of things that can shape ones perception in a way that doesn't reflect reality. You've helped me to see where I've been wrong in certain areas with these videos that take the time to actually examine some stuff. Always interesting. Also helpful to apply such lessons to other topics/areas in life, as far as one's thinking goes. I didn't have much of a view on this particular topic, but still. Edit: Also we should remember the absolute shit lighting at all these shows now. As well as the lower quality film back then making them look better (funnily). Shit and inconsistent backgrounds, etc. etc.

I completely do NOT agree with your assessment at all. Brandon had thin legs, bad conditioning and would not dwarf the competitors you claim he would. Brandon is shorter than what he claims to be (he's 5'6"-5'7" legit....same height as Shawn Ray) and he's not the weight he states he is either (he's at most 225-230 pounds....he has NO legs). You make it seem like he's some kind of mass monster. Guys like Charles Claimonte, Sonny Schmidt and Aaron Baker (all out of the top 6) would have smoked him, let alone the top 6, of whom would have annihilated him without mercy.
@Tomn8er

Not sure why you say that about his height. Just eyeballing it he's in the 5'7"-5'8" range, definitely taller than 5'6". The point he was making is that pure size for the sake of being bigger than your competitors was NOT nearly as big a factor in his era as It is today. Sure Brandon is bigger than these guys but if you asked me whose physique I would actually want to walk around with I completely agree with Yates, I’d rather be 235 and cut up with semi athletic looking muscle than 270 with much less muscle separation and COMPLETELY unnatural looking muscular development. This is not me hating on curry or any of the guys who compete today, unfortunately they have to try and achieve whatever physique the judges are rewarding when they compete. However I think DY’s take on the situation is totally valid, BB in general would be much better off if we stopped rewarding size as the most important factor, todays competitors have gone over the size tipping point in the eyes of many many ppl who follow the sport both closely and casually.

All the old timers are always talking shit about the conditioning and not looking good BECAUSE THEY WE'RE ALL BASICALLY CLASSIC PHYSIQUE!! WHICH IS WHY THEY ARE SO DRY AND HAVE MORE SEPARATION IT'S A LOT EASIER TO TO THOSE THINGS WHEN YOUR SIGNIFICANTLY SMALLER. Too do that work that shear size of today's monsters is a while different animal and is why its so uncommon,its just almost impossible to do at these sizes yet they still get pretty dang close. Now if they all have up just a little size and uppedthe conditioning your telling me they wouldn't blow away the 90s? I think they would ores a matter of a different time different era and different style. I don't get why we even compet compare the open from now to the open from then. I think we have to compare the classic physique now to the open then to make now sense

for me is much more simpler, we need to compare bodybuilder with the same strength, Dorian thinks conditioning is what should matters, by that standard, we shoulde take Hadi Choopen who Brandon beat this year and compare to the 90s, and hadi conditioning is probably better than all the guys other than Dorian and Shawn Ray or some year flex wheeler came in condition, (kevin nasser too weak from the back) but Hadi will beat Shawn Ray on size alone, so by that metric, hadi can place top 2 in most of 90s, and place no lower than top 4 in 98 to 99
