I was just about to say that! It honestly seems like the creators were going to use Niddhogg but then choose to use Jormungander cause its just better known. And they really shouldn't cause Niddhogg is such a cool creature. In norse mythology Niddhogg was trapped inside a hall, pressumable with Yggdrasils roots holding it down (kinda what the show did with this cage thing). The hall was located on Nastrom, the beach of corpses. Nastrom was also said to be swarming with serpents. Using in-show lore you can kinda see this as Niddhogg having some kind of alpha-ability to summon serpentine dragons to his side. Niddhogg in mythology is also described as being huge with human corpses inbedded into his scales! Even his name is wicked. Niddhogg; he who strikes with hatred.

I'd much more rather if it was a bigger dragon or at least if there was more than one. Say for example, like in the books, there are a species of dragon that stay stuck in their eggs until the ideal conditions for their birth is met, make this species work in this way. Imagine, the big one we met is the last adult, but there are a lot of eggs with fully formed babies waiting to finally escape their eggshells and cause havoc in the world, and the kids have to stop the adult while still making sure the condition to hatch isn't met. And since we're in the dark realm, make the condition be something paradoxical, maybe these eggs only hatch when in the presence of the green cristal or when they enter in contact with dragon fire, all valid reasons for locking them all in a cage.

Its venomous gas is lethal to every sort of life, though some dragons can neutralize it. It's particularly durable. A dive-bomb from Thunder didn't knock it out, and night lights are stated to have the same speed as furies. It can also breathe actual fire. I'm aware that there's other dragons that have the last 2 attributes, but Hiccup having to lock it up means Toothless couldn't beat it by himself. And honestly that says a lot given Toothless's record.

It was established a season or two ago (this whole show blends together so much I genuinely don't remember when it actually happened) that Thunder can do the whole "alpha state" thing like Toothless could. So, if he was really so desperate to save Tom from the sky torcher that he was willing to risk unleashing Jörmungandr to do it, why did he not just use his alpha dragon powers to order it to stop attacking him? I think the writers fully forgot that they already established he could just do that whenever.
The out of universe reason is a lack of care to remember anything. The in universe reason could be that as the Jormungandr, it's somehow outside the alpha influence or something. But I'm not going to waste time trying to write solutions when the writers didn't.
You could ask this about literally any conflict between Thunder and a wild dragon that happens in the show. Thunder in theory could at any point tell any hostile dragon to piss off. But either he simply chooses not to, the writers forgot about this ability, or he's not really the alpha and the whole nadder encounter outcome was just a fluke.
One of the weirdest parts about this for me is the fact that not only would Hiccup NEVER cage a dragon, it's not his style, but it doesn't make sense for the gate to be there because he shouldn't have been!!! On top of that Toothless would have had enough sense not to agree to having numerous Vikings around the wild hostile to people dragons while making the gate! And if it was so important to have it locked away, why would there be a key to let it loose again?! Surely someone would have pointed out how stupid that is, why have a lock if the dragon's not going to come out in their lifetime?! And since when could Thunder retract his teeth?! That's a natural instinct, not one that comes out to protect someone, wtf??? None of this makes sense?! Although I guess that's on par for Nine Realms.
This show reminds me of MLP gen 5. Gen 5 and this show both take place far into the future from the previous part of the franchise, but within the same universe. Both had potential, and Gen 5’s movie had promise. But both fell apart and betray its source material by contradicting the lore and mischaracterizing the old cast. In MLP’s case, the movie brought up some good ideas that would’ve been so cool to explore, but ultimately failed and was very disappointing. Meanwhile this show was trash from episode 1, and they’re working on this rather than the comics. Basically I can’t tell what’s worse, having hopes dashed or being trash from the start.
Thunder dancing pisses me off, because Toothless does that dance because he isn't sure how to do a mating ritual with the first Fury he's seen in over two decades. Toothless' dance was thematically relevant. Thunder's is just a callback with no rhyme or reason. Edit: I think the reason Dean is directing the remake is the same one for why he agreed to make the original series a trilogy. He hates sequels made for sequels sake, so he insisted on making a conclusive trilogy. I'm convinced he went "I hate remakes so if anyone is gonna massacre my baby, it's gotta be me." All while his tank of a husband is staring down the studio execs so he can do it his way.
That makes too much sense. Unfortunately, after the not so great conclusion that was the third movie (I have weird feelings about it), if he can't make the remake good (he probably won't be able to, as much as he tries), he's gonna be the one taking the fall, and that makes me sad.
At least out of all the franchises Dreamworks has to make a live action out of, httyd fits best. I still 100% believe its story is best told through animation, but it has some promise with Dean working on it. I refuse to believe Hiccup was the one who imprisoned the dragon in the finale. It was probably one of his earlier descendants during a time when all that was left of the dragons was old stories, causing people to fear them again and wonder if they'd be back. It's been established that for a time, Hiccup's family knew the location of the Hidden World, so maybe one of his great-grandchildren went to the Hidden World, found the dragon, and locked it up. Besides, the symbol of the Strike class doesn't point to Hiccup specifically, just his family.

As for the cards themselves, meanings tend to be reversed if a card is upside down (I can’t tell if the tower card is or not but seeing as the rest of the cards are facing right way up I’ll assume the same of the tower). The eight of cups represents restlessness causing you to question aspects of your life. The five of coins (or pentacles) is considered a financially unlucky card, indicating problems and possible unemployment. The tower represents shock, revolution, loss, uncertainty. Somehow it seems the show has more accurate tarot card information, than information on the franchise it’s a part of.
It's accurate but Tower on the future position can also mean - depending on the interpretation - starting anew on new stronger foundation, which is further solidified by present card being unlucky five of pentacles which means: June DECIDED to read it negatively and the whole conflict is POINTLESS

The only way they could realistically make Hiccup lock up Jormungundr (idk if that’s how you spell it) is if you make it a species that within reason presents a mass extinction threat to all dragons. And tbh, the thing probably doesn’t even represent a threat to toothless without the ability to fly, much less an entire class of animals that outclass every animal on the planet as a threat short of humanity.
Even then, Hiccup probably would have just killed it in an ethical way. He killed the Red Death, he wouldn't lock away the dragon for the rest of time, barring it from freedom that it can see but not have. That's sick and twisted. It's insane that the showrunners want you to think thats something he did.
If Hiccup’s plan was to leave Jormungundr in that cage until he could find a place to relocate where it couldn’t cause harm, that would be more in character. But NO. He just locked in the cage, leaving it to die without food or water for 1300 years. Which is MESSED UP! If Jormungundr really is that dangerous, why couldn’t Hiccup just kill it? It would be merciful than just leaving it to die.
How would a thing like that even evolve. The series’ dragon biology is generally as grounded as it can be for what it is. How does a species evolve to kill every thing in its ecosystem and leave nothing left

Jörmungandr is the world serpent that is large enough to encircle the whole of Midgard yes, but the concept of a snake biting it's own tail is from the myth of the Ouroboros snake. Two different myths that get confused together more often than you'd think. As someone with an interest in Helheim I'm personally dissapointed that the show writers decided to make Jörmungandr (The world's biggest danger noodle) the apex predator of dragons.... Instead of Nidhöggr which is LITERALLY RIGHT THERE! Nidhöggr literally lives on the Naströnd IN Helheim (which this show decided is 'the dark realm') It's literally a Dragon that's spent the entirety of it's existence gnawing on the roots of Yggdrasil, drooling it's poison the whole time, as it tries to bring down the tree literally keeping all of reality together and connected.
I must say that while Ms. Geology McBitchface is a rather underwhelming excuse for an antagonist, the fact that she's willing to use dynamite against literal children gives her points in my book. Also her motivation at least holds up better than Buzzsaw's "1.Capture dragons 2.????? 3. ???????? 4. Profit?" Bullshit plan.
I would like to mention that in a previous ep diangilo's father supports him after he takes care of a sheep and say that he could be a good doctor/veterinarian so the plot of him not liking that he is taking care of the dragons makes even less sense...
to be fair the 9 realms are never listed in Norse mythology so its impossible to be faithful. the list that appears if you google it is merely the most accepted theory
To be slightly more accurate there was one list of realms in one of the eddas, but like 4 (i dont remember fully off the top of my head but I think it said like alfheim [elves], svaertelfheim[dwarves], Valhalla, and maybe a 4th i cant remember) of them were said to just be part of asgard, but in a way thats similar to the households of the individual gods. So overall its very iffy

The Nine Realms: The destructive child who keeps destroying his parents house, was expelled from every schools in the district for beating up other kids and became a psychotic criminal the moment he turned 18.

I think the reason the black character turns white is because the lighting engine doesn't understand that black skin absorbs more light than white skin so his skin is reflecting too much light making him look white

Yeah this was my assumption too, like why would they even have a version of his model with white skin around at all, let alone 'accidentally' let it slip into a scene and only, like, specific moments of specific scenes that all happen to be in extreme lighting conditions lol. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the idea of them being in a relationship, but the way it was depicted in the show is terrible. Warning, this is going to be long, so strap in. The way they portray Jormungandr as an apex predator is mind-boggling. First off, the way they treat the threat of Jormungandr makes no sense because that’s not even how apex predators act in real life. The term “Apex Predator” just means that it’s at the top of the food chain and no animal (or in this case, dragon) naturally preys on it. The way it acts suggests that it wants to eat all the dragons in the Hidden World, which would drive dragons to extinction and would eliminate its food supply, and it would eventually die. Also, even if we were to ignore all of that, this thing is way too small to be an apex predator. The Red Death could probably eat this thing easily and the Bewilderbeast could probably step on it and it would die. I’ve heard the theory that Jormungandr will grow larger as it eats, but 1, Season eight Jormugandr shows no signs of this, and 2, it would just make it even more set in stone than it was before that this thing is a rip-of Great Devourer from Ninjago (I mean, it's kinda already obvious considering the title "Rise of Jormungandr" is very reminiscent of "Rise of the Great Devourer", but you get what I mean). And, Hiccup wouldn’t just lock this thing up. If it was really that dangerous then Hiccup would have just killed it, not left it to slowly die of starvation or dehydration. And do you know what makes this even more unbelievable? There is a dragon in the existing canon that they could have used. It's called the Purple Death. This dragon appeared in the comic "The Legend of Ragnarok" and not only is this serpentine dragon massive, but the Berkians actually thought that it was the "Serpent of Midgard" aka, Jormungandr. Richard Hamilton said that it’s around the same size as the Red Death (and assuming it is similar to the Red Death in behavior, it wouldn’t be that much of a stretch to assume that it eats other dragons). And in the comic, it looks like it could be closer to the size of the Bewilderbeast. And, even its presence can disturb other dragons. Also, it was implied that this dragon can survive in a state of hibernation for hundreds of years. In the comic, Hiccup used a Changewing to hypnotize it to sleep for "several thousand years or so." The Purple Death then fell back into the ocean. So they could have it encaged by the land itself, after all the years of erosion, instead of by Hiccup. And it wouldn’t be very hard to assume that it sunk into the earth like a fossil into the Hidden World (Okay that made a lot more sense in my head but I think it makes more sense than most of what we’ve seen in the show). And this would also give them an opportunity to use a dragon the other shows and movies didn't. They could literally just take the model from the game Dragons: Rise of Berk, and my entire rant could have been avoided. They could have had the climax go something like this: The kids see in the depiction of Jormungandr a general location of where it sleeps. After searching, the kids can't find any traces of Jormungandr, then Buzzsaw shows up and a battle ensues. Little do the combatants know that beneath their feet is the dragon they were searching for, which awakens to the chaos above. With the help of several misaimed shots, the Purple Death breaks free of its rocky prison and runs rampant in the Hidden World, desperate to feed its starving belly. (I commented some of this in a conversation on Raisorblade’s review and was told that this was better than what we got so, yeah?) And this way, the dragon has been starving for 1300 years and is just trying to feed itself, instead of whatever motivation it has in the show.
If anyone thinks that it's unrealistic for the kids getting into petty fights for no reason, splitting apart, then getting back together and fine with each other's company, only for them to go back to fighting the next episode, this is LITERALLY how my two younger brothers act every single day.

Eating eels makes dragons (except typhoomarangs) go batshit crazy. It’s a BAD TRIP that makes them excessively violent and increases their fire breath capacity by a lot. I’m not surprised at this line and how they totally forgot the preexisting in-universe explanation for this, but the amount of times they reuse old plot points from the old shows, you’d think that they’d remember that piece of lore. In the original show, when there was a conflict between the gang, it was always for a good reason and it always helped character growth and development, whether it be the gang learning to thrust and forgive Dagur, or snotlout learning to be more considerate to his friends

In regards to the Tarot Cards. There's a lot of ways to "read" them, and I treat them as something that can help you reflect on events that have happened or could happen. June seems to use a three card spread which typically is read as the past, present, and future. I don't know if that was her intent but I'll list out what each of the cards means and how I believe she can interpret them based on my limited knowledge of the show. 8 of Cups: This card shows a figure walking away from the cups, representing readiness to walk away from something and consider what is really important in your life. It can represent a detachment from material possessions in pursuit of something greater, or leaving a situation that negatively effects you. In the context of the show it could mean some need to consider their place in the group, and whether or not in benefits themselves to remain. 5 of Coins: Although sometimes depicted as coins, these cards are typically called "Pentacles". The 5 of Pentacles shows two different groups, in that card's art it is the crippled boy and the regal woman. This card shows that even when hope seems lost, there are opportunities if you seek them out. This card reminds one to feed their spirit by focusing on relationships rather than material possessions. This card seems to fit, reminding them to focus on their relationships, although I'm not sure what, if any, material goods would be driving them apart. The Tower: The Tower represents change, serving to remind the reader to not grow complacent in their current situation as it can always be whisked away. Change is always coming, but how the pieces fall are up to you. This could symbolize that their group is in danger of disbanding, although Tarot Cards aren't really used (at least by me) as definitive. All in all the cards seem to be accurate for the writer's intention, but having June use it as a "oh no our team is going to break up!" moment is a bit of a missed step. She could really have used this opportunity to display her spiritualism as a positive quality, using it as a teaching moment to have their team reflect on their issues then and there. But the show demands characters ham fistedly learn lessons through their boring adventures so I guess I expect too much. Edit: Oh the ironic self fulfilling prophecy of the cards telling the group to focus on their relationship, and through June's own incompetence she essentially forces the group apart. It's not the cards' fault that June doesn't know how to use them. The cards advise them to focus on their relationship and resolve the issue, but instead she just freaks out over the idea and forces the thing the cards warned of. Classic
1. the world serpent is much bigger than it is in the show its literally called that because it can wrap around the world like a gridle 2. the world serpent is a child of Loki but its his son not his daughter, unless June was referring to the world serpent's sister Hel and, Hel being the goddess of the underworld and death but considering the episode is about the world serpent then she's probably not referring to Hel 3. the serpent doesn't have poison breath it has poison but not as a breath rather as its bite. 4. World serpent doesn't trigger Ragnarok yes it has a part in it but rather the forever winter triggers Ragnarok, part of Ragnarok is Thor and World Serpent fighting and killing each other. edit: Okay so June is refering to Helheim then yes she was referring to the goddess Hel for some reason so major inaccurate thing World Serpent isn't in Helheim its in the oceans of midgard aka Earth's oceans

If they wanted to have Hiccup seal it away, they could have had him seal the entrance to the realm. First He finds the realm on accident, he finds some unique dragons, there is some pretty useful resources there. Then he finds the "Jormungandr", maybe even woke it up from some kind of hibernation sleep thing on accident, even have it hibernating be important to how the realm's ecosystem works. jormungandr wakes up & rampages around to eat, falls asleep for a century or 2, rinse & repeat. Realizes he woke it up to soon & now it's causing more damage than normal. So, after getting it to go back to sleep he seals off the realm in shame. It would have made more accurate to his character! Heck, they could have Hiccup & Astrid end up in the hidden realm by accident, maybe even getting stuck & having to find a way out, because the dragons don't want to go above ground if they don't absolutely have to. Giving them a reason to explore. You could probably use The Haddock Family's Adventur'sTM as a subtle hint as to why some dragons are more docile, Astrid doesn't care if some dragons don't want to be trained, they WILL leave her family alone if they know whats good for them. So many "Box in a wall" issues could have been avoided if the kids just found some abandoned tents or something!
After looking up the T9R, 9 realms have been revealed (slight spoilers for s8 if you actually care) Also turns out that the show is the first result that comes up on Google when you search for the the nine realms. Isn't that stupid? Some of these are easy to match. Some aren't and I'm taking creative liabilities with (but so does the show so it balances out). Also it's not actually confirmed which realms go with which. Easy: Jotenheim: Giant Muspelheim: Fire Niflheim: Ice Helheim: Dark (cause you can't say Hel in a children's show. Might as well called it the evil realm) Asgard: God Hard Midgard: Crystal (Since it's the closest to the surface) Alfheim: Nature (Apparently elfs were closely associated with nature.) Svartelheim: Desert (cause it's the only one left Vanaheim: King (Home of the Vanir gods. Which I guess kinda works)
Something i dont think anyone else has pointed out abiut how dumb hiccup caging the bug bad dragon this season is that that wpuld imply that there was only one of these dragons in existence and that it survived. Without food or water or room to stretch out. FOR CENTURIES. Even in canon in the books only collosal sea dragons could live that long, and thats in deep hibernation. This thing jumped out of that door fully awake and ready to fight, and its not a sea dragon. And even sea dragons need food. If this thing hunts and wats other dragons it wouldve died after a few weeks in that cage. Not livied for litteral thousands of years. Even with food it should've died a looong time ago
Honestly, if the break up of the group was actually well structured and made sense and there was actual tensions, it would probably make more sense for the group to fall apart over them accidentally leading Buzzsaw to them and getting the town destroyed. Have faith in Tom's leadership get totally shaken after not just losing the book, but the town being halfway destroyed. Get his mom's ass injured and taken off site, to have an actual reason for her to not be there. Have D'Angelo's conflict with his dad revolve around him actually shutting himself off and burying himself in the dragon hospital and work to cope. Have Tom and June, if they must be endgame, possibly face the fact that they don't work together as well without the team buffering them and have them figure and iron that out and learn how to communicate better. Make them earn it at least a little bit. Explore more of Tom having to step in and make decisions when it's just the two of them and having to work through these new doubts about himself from the attack. Have Alex retreat into herself and her tablet and have D'Angelo try to pull her back out, because there is good friendship potential between them that is so unharnessed in this gd series, to try and train up an auxiliary dragon riding team because that plan actually has such D'Angelo energy. But, more importantly, let her enjoy her own company. Show her busying herself with projects and not thinking a lot about the conflict because she still needs to run her sensors and IT stuff, but the vibe must be different than burying herself in work. The vibe needs to be that she currently enjoys being by herself more because the idea of discussing what happened between them is difficult for her. She isn't bothered about it at all when she's doing her own thing, just when the others want to pull her back in. Let Eugene have the mini villain arc it makes so much more sense from a narrative stand point. Let him be the driving force of the argument that breaks them up. Give him a leg to stand on about calling out Tom. Make the others pause about him siding with Buzzsaw and if he'd actually turned on them with all the stuff he'd said before during the fight. Maybe let Alex know exactly what he's doing, either planned between the two of them or letting her get the one liner on Eugene of knowing the whole time, because again good energy, and have her shutting everyone out actually be her using her sensors to monitor the situation. Also because let Eugene cook. Let him cook. Let him be proven wrong about not needing Tom as a leader and/or the group to back him up. Let him make a go at getting the book back for selfish reasons, whether that's trying to patch up the argument or to prove he's a better leader. Let him be competent at talking circles around Buzzsaw. Let this man be an utter train wreck for a full season. Let him cook.
The dragon being implied to be THE Jörmungandr and not just a dragon that reminded Hiccup (A Norseman) of the snake of myth and legend is quite possibly the dumbest thing they could have done because that now implies that not only does a GOD actually exist, but the rest of them do too.
5:30 I did go back! This video was the first of yours recommended to me, and I was shocked to see this was a season 7 review. Needless to say, I have spent the past two days binging your 6 other season reviews leading up to this moment. Feels good to be back. Also everytime I see Deangelo’s dad show up I can’t help but burst out laughing because of the meme (all the way back in your season 1 review) of him looking like Sid’s dog from Toy Story 1 😂💀
Having lightly dabbled in Tarot Cards, and double checking the meaning of the cards that were pulled, it seems like it wasn't the *worst* interpretation, but with them feeling a bit like they just picked 3 negative cards. The 8 of cups seems about right, with it being about withdrawal and escapism. So it kinda fits the theme of a breakup. The 5 of pentacles (not coins) being chosen, has a lot more to do with literal wealth and jobs than anything else, and is about losing said wealth. The Major Arcana of The Tower is definitely fits with the theme. It's meant to represent a sudden change, and a faltering nature of when something isn't built well. Perfect for the theme of the episode. The issue I have, is the order. Typically, the cards are going from past, present, and future. This isn't always the case, but it feels the most natural. So ending with The Tower implies that some relationship you will build in the future won't be a strong one. If I were to hand-pick the cards for the reading, it would lead with The Tower, followed by 8 of Cups, and closing with a reversed 10 of Swords. As the 10 of swords is a lot about endings, and deep wounds. Reversing it means recovery of those wounds. Showing that it can get better. Though, they could leave it not reversed, and potentially have it about fixing the future instead. All in all, I'd give them a 6.
I know some decks outside of rider-waithe style do call pentacles Coins, and interpretations of each card do relate to the other cards within the reading + the situation you're reading for but otherwise 100% agree
Hel is the daughter of Loki and Angroboda who rules over helheim (which should be the ice realm and not the dark realm), she was given the position of queen of hel by Odin.
Jormungandr in norse mythology is one of the three sons of the giants Loki and Angrboda (yes, Loki, the god is also a giant). It was feared that the bond of the two of them would form the three beings that would start the Ragnarok (the end of the world), so being born Hel, Fenrir and Jormungandr. Jormungandr was thrown into the ocean, and it grew so large it was able to find his own tail when embracing Midgard (the earth, basically). It is able to shake the seas just by slithering on the seas it grew on, and also breath poisonous clouds… so why is he so tiny? Why isn't he on the sea? WHY THE HELL IS HE A DRAGON ON THE FIRST PLACE?! They could've picked Fafnir in his dragon form or even Nidhoggr, but I guess Jormungandr was way more popular…? But I believe that Fafnir… a literal man that can, and hear me out, TRANSFORM INTO A DRAGON had way more potential to be the biggest threat than a glorified frantic snake… imagine if when they opened the door, instead of finding some large and imposing dragon they just find a man slowly walking towards the, and the the camera pans to the protagonists as they watch in horror and disbelief how the man TURNS INTO A DRAGON, snatches the sky torture into the cage and then after a few second only the Fafnir comes out again from the cage… but NOOOOO, they HAD to put the large snake in there… Also, if Jormungandr is a thing in this world… are Loki, Hel and Fenrir also a thing? Or this "Jormungandr" is just an impostor? Who knows…
