Screw the body, my question is why Dumbledore, or anyone else for that matter, didn't just ASK Myrtle what happened to her in the first place
@thelegend1801
@thelegend1801 3 года назад
Dumbledore knew that Riddle had opened the chamber of secrets, but he couldn't prove it. He was only the Transfiguration professor at that time, so he wouldn't need to ask Myrtle how she died. The others were idiots who accepted that Hagrid released some great and ugly monster which killed Myrtle. It took a parselmouth and the brain of Hermione to discover that the monster was a Basilisk. But yes, asking Myrtle seems to be the best thing to do.

Dumbledore wasn't Headmaster when Riddle was still a student, he didn't have that much power. Also, a lot of people wanted him to be Minister of Magic, so he was a political threat. If we learned anything from the Harry Potter books and politics in there, it's that politicians fear for their status and are petty. They just wanted the whole Chamber of Secrets thing to be over, as long as no more attacks happened, whatever explanation they got was fine, no more investigation "needed", no matter if an innocent's whole life and career depended on it. The best Dumbledore could probably do then was to make sure Hagrid wasn't a complete outcast of the magical community. Then, we also have Dumbledore actively not striving for power. His whole experience with Grindelwald left him very aware of what hunger for power does to him, and he worked his whole life actively avoiding posts of political power, if possible and arguable. He also trusted a man, Gellert Grindelwald, who he saw as his best friend, mate, someone to desire, who turned out to be a cruel, dangerous man, so he probably thought that his judgement of people wasn't that good. I think he spent a lot of time watching people and slowly making up his mind about them, reading signs in their behaviour. I think, he has trust issues, of people, and of his own judgement. So he would watch Tom Riddle for a while, and Tom didn't show too many obvious signs of his cruelty during his time as a student. Tom played the part of a model student very well on the surface.

Yeah I have to agree with your statement, A perfect example is even with Harry he ignored him for a full year basically fearful that (He Who shall not be named) Would find out information through Harry himself and therefore limited his contact with him, Which in the end almost drove Harry insane, It's hard because it wasn't necessarily the wrong choice because he didn't know if Harry was being used for info, But still he forgot Harry was still just a child really and he could of handled it better I think, If I'm not mistaken Dumbledore himself even said that he made a mistake.

I personally always felt that one of the many reasons Voldemort hated Dumbledore so much was because Dumbledore had never raised a deadly hand against him, and while yes they have dueled before, it was Dumbledore's restraint with Tom that made Voldemort so angered by him. I'm certain that Voldemort was quite insulted by the fact that Dumbledore had never stopped treating Tom as one of his students. Dumbledore's protective nature especially towards his students young and old, would not allow him to ever fatally harm one of them, and this is what caused Voldemort to lose his cool every time he and Dumbledore came face-to-face. No matter how foolish or terrifying or threatening or deadly Tom could ever become, he could never seem to break out of the rebellious students persona to Dumbledore. I imagine this infuriated Voldemort to no end

@@LucidVision138 It's not the actual fangs of the Basilisk that are potent its the venom. When Harry stabinated the snake the sword got Basilisk fluids on it, Tom even makes a remark about how remarkable the venom is to Harry while he's dying from it. The venom is better than the sword, so the sword absorbed it as the sword was from goblin silver which takes in that which is stronger than itself and rejects anything mundane. Voldemort pieces are considered mundane by the way, literal dirt can't get in that sword so non-corporeal Voldemort pieces wouldn't either. So Tom wanting to make that into a horcrux proves like the rest of wizarding kind, he knew jack shit about goblin silver and goblin magic.
@Kubinda12345
@Kubinda12345 3 года назад
Personally I think that Tom mangled Myrttle's body postmortem. I mean he used her death to create Horcrux and JKR implied that creation of Horcrux's involves cannibalism. So while the basilisk left Myrttle's body undamaged, Tom could've mangle it up and imitate Acromantula's attack. However Dumbledore knew from their first meeting that Tom was Parselmouth which is a proof which he could've given to Dippet that Tom is Slytherin's heir.

Finally a comment about something i was wondering.. if indeed some graphic thing had to be done to the dead body to be made into a horcrux, seeing that myrtle is a ghost, didn't she bear witness to what was happening to her body? Muggles have science for things like autopsies so it would be interesting to know how they might do one. Muggles understood Rigor Mortis long before their science explained it or unlocked the intricacies of how it works and how long it takes to set in. If Myrtle's body wasn't discovered for some time, perhaps they mistook her petrified state for Rigor Mortis having set in. Not finding any bite marks is another issue. If her body was in the bath or wet before or after death, maybe it was assumed that the bite marks were there but visible traces were ruined by the state of the body. It could also be that Tom was blackmailing someone at the Ministry to find in his favor or to support his story in some way.

I think it went in stages: 1 - In the orphanage and after, Dumbledore may have assumed Tom's isolation, whether imposed by himself or others, would have made him worse than he would have been. Perhaps he felt socialization at Hogwarts would improve him. 2 - His initial time at Hogwarts had Albus wary, but not suspicious, and even this wariness was up against the lauds that started coming the boy's way. Hagrid was easily targeted because of biases against his heritage, the skill of Tom's frame-up, and frankly, the Ministry's noted tendency to say 'We've got our suspect - convict them!' as we saw time and again. Now apparently having 'saved' Hogwarts from the terrible Acromantula, Tom now had further insulation from crit, while Dumbledore likely took some hits for protecting Hagrid to the extent he did. 3 - As we might see in a future Fantastic Beasts, Tom dropped under the radar just as Dumbledore's greatest heroic triumph (however mitigated by his past it was). Hopefully, they don't play this up too much, but it was a factor, as was likely war exhaustion, in whatever way it kept Dumbledore from watching this problematic student who was yet well regarded, enough that the only concern for him was squandering his talents in odd pursuits. 4 - If I had to guess, with some small bias towards Albus, while he knew Tom would take a deep dive into the Dark Arts, by the time of his failed DADA application, he had no idea just how incredibly deep he had gone until he saw him. If I had an accusation against Dumbledore for this situation, I would say that each time, he was fighting the last war, so to speak, and kept on expecting others to pick up on what he had, particularly the lugubrious, hide-bound Ministry. I would also add - while Tom Sr.'s genes might have reinvigorated the Gaunt line physically and magically, it could not rescue his son from the mental instability of the line, his genius aside. At the height of his conquest and powers, Voldemort was still the same inside as Marvolo, ranting and raving about how awesome he was. Albus failed to see how deep this aberrant drive went, and that left him a vital one step less prepared to deal with what Tom became.

I believe that since everyone was been fooled by Tom everyone would laugh at dumbledore. What I don’t understand is why dumbledore didn’t chase the horcruxes way sooner. I know that JK didn’t think of everything in advance..but it would be nice if dumbledore was always gone or mostly gone throughout the books until book 6 it would have been a mind blown reveal. Also like I said, I think book 4 should have been finding accidentally and destroying the horcrux in the vanishing room. The title could have been Harry Potter and the Vanishing Room. Then book 5 would be book 4 as we know it.

You hope maybe he would grow out of it or change to become a better person like hopefully most of us do when we get out of our teens/early 20s and stop being an idiot, plus no evidence for anything truly horrible... But I never understood why dd didn’t face him at all during his reign before he murdered the Potters. Maybe he knew about the horcruxes and therefore saw no point in dueling him? But I could’ve sworn he didn’t discover those till book 6 with the ring.

My two cents = Dumbledore didn't personally face Riddle during the first wizarding war because he was, at heart, a pacifist who was reluctant to fight unless there was absolutely no other choice. Remember that it took him 5 years until he finally personally involved himself in the Grindlewald war. That's 5 years of countless people pressuring him to fight Grindelwald personally that Dumbledore resisted. While he did have personal reasons for avoiding the fight (i.e. see Deathly Hallows), I believe his personal distaste for fighting also played a huge role in why he held off his involvement for so long. His distaste for fighting has been displayed numerous times throughout the books, most notably in his famous duel with Voldemort at the end of the Order of the Phoneix. Here, he only engaged Voldemort to save Harry and never aimed to truly hurt or kill Riddle. While some may argue that he didn't try to kill Voldemort at that time because he knew about the Horcruxes and therefore killing Riddle would be a waste of time, I disagree. While killing him permanently was impossible at that time, a fact Dumbledore undoubtedly knew at that time, that does not mean that killing him was useless. Indeed, Riddle was 'killed' before, when his curse backfired attempting to destroy Harry when he was a baby. This event left Riddle/Voldemort in a state of existence where he was 'weaker than the meanest ghost'(Goblet of Fire), a state he would not escape until 13 years later. While not a permanent solution, killing him in the duel would effectively neutralize him as a threat until he could rebuild his body, something that is difficult to do without aid, giving Dumbledore and co. time to hunt down and destroy the Horcruxes relatively unimpeded. I believe the fact that Dumbledore refused to even attempt to kill Riddle in this battle shows that he was unwilling to compromise his moral opposition to killing even when he knew it was perhaps the only solution left. In Harry's sixth year, Dumbledore was aware of Malfoy's plot to assassinate him and all the attempts he'd made through Snape's report. Despite being aware of Malfoy's intent, Dumbledore showed only sympathy and understanding to the boy when they finally faced off against each other at the end. While people might point out that Dumbledore had been disarmed at the beginning of the battle while he was protecting Harry from detection, I would like to point out that Dumbledore was proficient at WANDLESS magic, and, despite being severely weakened by the potion, he had been witnessed casting a powerful firestorm spell immediately afterward. In my opinion, Dumbledore had enough strength left to fight back against a sixth-year student even without a wand, yet he refused to even in the face of someone who had made numerous attempts on his life. Dumbledore is a pacifist and is far more comfortable teaching, advising and acting as a role model for others than he is taking part in battle on the front line.

If Dumbledore never took Tom to Hogwarts, then Tom would've never learned how to use magic, he wouldn't have learned about horcruxes, nor would he had become Voldemort in the future. The chamber of secrets would've never been opened which means that Moaning Myrtle would still be alive and Hagrid would not have been expelled from Hogwarts. No Voldemort means no death eaters. All the people he killed to make horcruxes would still be alive, Lily and James Potter would still be alive, Harry's childhood would be completely different, Sirius Black would've never been locked up in Azkaban prison, Peter Pettigrew wouldn't turn himself into a rat who went on to be the Weasleys' family pet, and the entire Harry Potter series wouldn't have happened the way it did.

I imagine Tom Riddle would have ultimately chosen the same path - wizard or not, Tom Riddle would still have strived for greatness, power, and immortality. The only difference depends on how successful he would be, and if he would ever learn how to properly use and control his magic. In a world without magic, he would have turned to science and medicine. If he never met Dumbledore, I'm sure Tom would have strived to become a doctor, one who would push the boundaries and go further than any doctor with morals would dare - like so many scientists and doctors from recent history, who could similarly be described as terrible or pioneers. And eventually, Tom would have used his profession in medicine to get himself into a position of power, aspiring to become a dictator, much like he does as a dark wizard. And I'm sure the "Death Eaters" would have still existed. But they wouldn't have been wizards, but his personal gang of thugs and killers. But that said, just because Dumbledore might not have found Tom or taken him to Hogwarts doesn't necessarily mean that another wizard or witch could not have. For all we know, Tom could have ended up a student at Durmstrang anyway.

Myrtle never saw her attacker, only yellow eyes so she couldn’t identify the Basilisk. Dumbledore probably knew or at least suspected Tom was behind the attacks on students but couldn’t prove it, and the ministry wanted a quick resolution to the problem so when Hagrid popped up as a suspect, being the bias against non pure bloods the ministry is, they jumped on a chance to pin it on his spider. Without proof Dumbledore couldn’t really combat the narrative pushed by the ministry. Even though Dumbledore was right about Tom, he never could gain enough proof to get the ministry to take action before it was too late. If Dumbledore had taken action on his own, he would have just been seen as a murderer who killed a promising young wizard.

Ancient wizards didn’t note down all their craft fearing that the most potent arts would fall in the wrong hands or their works were lost to time or destroyed through the course of history. I've only read the books in the main HP series so don't know much about Grindelwald, but if he's a lot like Tom & Dumbledore was very close to him then he was probably the first to realise Grindelwald wasn't who everyone thought he was, which could be why he was quite passive before Tom became Voldemort. What with Snape blackmailing him threatening to break his promise he had to turn a blind eye sometimes, & he seemed to compare himself to Harry a lot putting him in the limelight only to be asked silly questions like 'Did you know what Tom was going to become?' So all he really had was Fawkes though it wasn't clear if he'd had a pet phoenix all his life & when he most needed one.

I have a theory but it's kind of extravagant so bear with me... It's strange that dumbledore seems to be the only wizard who was ever disturbed by Tom as a youngster. Probably safe to assume there would have been plenty of smart wizards teaching at hogwarts, even if they weren't as extraordinarily gifted as dumbledore - but yet not a single other wizard seems to have recognised the early signs of his future darkness. My idea is this.... Dumbledore isn't wary of young Tom because he has any kind of special intuition about him... He's wary of him because he knows with absolute certainty what tom will eventually become, and he also knows with absolute certainty that he's totally and completely powerless to prevent it from happening. In Harry's timeline, there's one crucial, central character who mysteriously disappears, seemingly forever, but without any real explanation... SNAPE! We're told Snape died after an attack by nagini, but when they gather up all the bodies after the battle of hogwarts, Snape's isn't among them...WHAT?! WHERE DID HE GO?!... Let's suppose for a moment that Snape foresaw his life was at risk (dumbledore did cryptically warn him to keep an eye on nagini), and went prepared when he met Voldemort that night, with a snakebite antidote (he was a master potion maker after all), and a small tool that would allow him to escape and remain hidden in plain sight for the rest of his life... ... A time turner!! A few turns and he's spirited away to the safety of an earlier time, before Voldemort even exists. He hunts down the one person he knows he can trust, Dumbledore, and tells him everything. Young Dumbledore now knows a child called Tom riddle will eventually morph into a dark, but supremely powerful wizard known as Lord Voldemort, but he also knows there's nothing he can do to prevent that from happening. The way that time turner's work, the future has already happened so what will be, will always be. Tom was always going to turn into voldemort, regardless of anything dumbledore does or doesn't do. So all he can do instead, is watch and observe and arm himself with as much information as possible to help Harry try to defeat him one day. Snape, let's not forget, died before finding out the outcome of the battle of hogwarts, and knew nothing about hallows or hurcruxes, so Dumbledore still has a lot he needs to piece together before he can give Harry any kind of a chance at winning... Viewed through that lense, Dumbledore's point blank refusal to ever explain why he trusts Snape so implicitly and resolutely (probably even to Snape himself), takes on a new meaning. It also no longer seems to be a mere coincidence that Dumbledore happens to be the first wizard Tom ever meets...
