Ah, the beauty of what music can provide.. you brought me back over 35 years ago.. this was, courtesy of an excellent teacher who has since passed, the first song I ever dove deeply into as a fingerpicker. A beautiful song, as you well know, and have presented here for us. I will now revisit 'Dust In the Wind' and re-learn it. I say - Thank You - Marco!

This was the first song I learned on the guitar. It was very difficult, I took a long time passively practicing and 2 years later I still struggle but this song is what inspired me to learn the guitar 🎸

Wow, you and your song choice are just what I needed this quiet, somber, difficult morning for me !!! I hadn’t seen any of your videos for a while, ( every one of them are always so beautiful, calming and motivating, physically, emotionally and spiritually !!! I am an older guy, I have always wanted to learn to play the guitar but I just didn’t, now I am battling multiple physical problems such as a Parkinson’s disease called Dystonia that has taken away most of my ability to speak, chew and swallow and my dexterity, also recently diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis, Atrial Fibrillation and failed a colon cancer screening test, but I have faith in God, you are a blessing to anyone desiring to play the guitar, thank you again for your videos, instructions and encouragement and motivation sir !!! ❤

I believe you will still be able to play... I have tendonitis in my elbows and shoulders, carpal tunnel in my wrist, arthritis in my finger joints... all that, no thanks to a truck-driving career I wished I had never taken on.....I can't play certain guitars, I have to mainly play nylon-stringers, (they're easier) and I struggle to play my 12 string, but I still manage to crank out tunes.... hang in there, my friend.

For the intro just remember the number 103. That’s the fret sequence on the B string. It repeats over and over through the chord changes. So, for the opening C chord (B string) you fret 1, then 0 (open), then 3, then 1. For Asus2 you pick up where you left off and fret 0, 3, 1, 0. When you go back to C fret 3, 1, 0,3. And, so on. I’ve heard some folks always going back to the 1 on the chord changes but that’s not how Kansas plays it. Hope that all makes sense!

As with many here, this was one of the first songs I learned. 25 years later and this fingerpicking pattern creeps into most songs I write and play. It's an infectious groove that leads to playing with all 5 fingers of both hands, eventually. Dust In the Wind is so beautiful it draws me in every time. Great lesson, Marco.

I remember the first time I heard this on the radio. I thought nothing beyond classical could be so beautiful with uplifting emotion…but this…it felt so moving within me. That was nearly fifty years ago. Now that I hear it I still feel what my Eleven year old self felt…only times one thousand. That much intensity can only bring tears. And so it does. Every time I hear it.

I agree. This is my 1st plucking training when I was 10 years old. Once you get the rhythm and pattern, everything will be smooth and you will easily learn every songs with plucking.

One of the first finger-picking tunes I learn and still play regularly years later. The challenge in this song for me is the continuous repetition of the pattern, which can definitely tax your picking hand. Still have a hard time completing it without at least one mistake.

'Dust in the Wind' was the song that inspired me to pick up a guitar, and the first song I learned. It's just 4 basic open chords, C, A minor, G and D minor. I first learned the chord shapes and then to play a simple arpeggio with my thumb. I actually worked out the finger picking while driving one day (no guitar to be found), and to my amazement it worked when I got back home and gave it a try! It's still a great warm-up exercise.

Love this tutorial. The thumb patterns are a bit simple for ‘traditional Travis’ style, but all great guitarists have used repeating patterns to emphasize the bass line as the song requires. Listen to Chet Atkins or Doyle Dykes for other examples. Another tutorial I’d enjoy would be Horizons by Steve Hackett. I’ve watched him play it live and in video. Still can’t figure out one change…even after 40 years of working on it.

Beautiful Song, I truly was enjoying your video until 1:06, and I heard the metal buttons on your denim jacket slam into the back of your beautiful acoustic guitar. I just pictured the constant dent being formed.😢 A local music store, would not let anyone play a guitar, if they were wearing coat with buttons, big belt buckle, or chains on wallets or pants. It made 100% sense! A valuable lesson to share. Sorry for the rant. I felt like you should know 😅

The 2nd guitar your hearing might just be tuned to “Nashville” which creates the effect of a twelve string when played along with a standard tuned guitar….but don’t quote me on this…I do know this technique was very common in the recording industry. Thanks for the great lesson on this classic song!
@markhernden9472

Actually you are correct. Years ago I had a copy of Acoustic Guitar magazine which is now long gone. The issue had an extensive article on Dust In The Wind which explained the 11 layers of guitar in the song including Nashville tuning and other methods like using only the treble strings of a 12 string, doubling certain guitars and such. BTW if you've never heard a young Sungha Jung's arrangement, it's worth checking out.

Love Dust In The Wind, but despite what Kerry Livgren said, the song is NOT Travis Picking. Listen to Merle Travis, Thom Bresh, Jerry Reed or Richard Smith and you'll hear that Travis Picking is not a repeating pattern, a la the technique in Dust In The Wind. Also, the recording was made with a 12 string guitar, hence the high notes you've arranged as a second guitar.
