How much abuse you apply on top of that could lead to varying degrees of mistreatment, but the animals are being mistreated just by virtue of being kept in the situation that they’re in as a bare minimum.

I remember doing a research project on elephants and Flamingos in elementary school. Me and my mom went all out on those posters and we learned a lot about both species. I grew to love both Flamingos and Elephants by the time we were done. I also liked Horton hears a Who, so there's that.
