Hawbucks is attempting to breed healthier bulldogs, though this indeed also involves deflattening the face. I'd say that's worth it, a dog is a companion, not an ornament.

Good move! I love the look of a smooshed face, but this is too much. I prefer, for example, a pug in the 1800s (almost a petite, terrier nose, far better for their health). I wonder if Bulldogs are the most unhealthy breed? They just look like they're in pain simply moving, its not just (arguably) the most brachycephalic face, but the oodles of wrinkles for yeast and bacterial growth, plus the heavy, stocky weight. I love them, but I couldn't imagine contributing to their breeding (plus I'm pro 'adopt, don't shop').
@grumbeard

Agreed. It is okay to have breed standards for dogs but only when health considerations are taken into account. The pug/bulldog nose and the german shepard back are just some of the more egregious things that need to be 'bred out'. A paradigm shift but a healthy and welcome one. To put it bluntly it will also be in the breeders best interest I think. If you are known for breeding healthy dogs that has got to generate good press. Our westie only had the chronic ear inflammation the breed is known for but that was easy to treat with cleaning and eardrops. Never any serious hereditary ilnesses. If I still had the time I would go back to that breeder in a heartbeat.

This what I mean when people use poor breeding standards as support for "adopt, don't shop!" The general public doesn't really have a say in what constitutes a "proper" bulldog or pug; it's the Kennel Club, and until they change the breed standard(s) to be healthier, it won't change. People will buy whatever bulldog is available, and it's not like it's impossible to have that cute, squishy look with a longer snout. There are breeders working to breed out some of these more harmful traits, and I have a lot of respect for them going against the grain set by the Kennel Club.

@@CanidRose Right? The AKC has amazing lineage tracking but their breed standards are garbage for most of the dogs. Its hard to have a good registry that tracks lineage but also doesn't support unhealthy breed regulations; I love the CKC due to them trying to help certain breeds and even allowing healthy lineage mix breeds to be registered (all dogs came from mix breeds to get to where they are, we wont be able to obtain new breeds or repair old breeds without doing so.) however, because of that they are vulnerable to puppy mills and BYBs which sucks.

My aunt and uncle train aggressive dogs for a living and they foster dogs in their spare time. They only had one foster fail and it was an English Bulldog named Ginger. She is an amazing dog and she was always so gentle and hilarious. She does this thing where if my aunt and uncle are busy and she wants to play (even though they already spent hours playing with her) she will sit on their feet and if that doesint work, she will throw her toys in the air and then look back at my aunt or uncle to see if they notice, and then she does it again, and again, until after like a few minute she gets bored and just takes a nap or plays with her tug toy. Though she does not have very good manners, she is adorable and lovable and my aunt and uncle love her. She turned 4 this year! Happy belated Birthday Ginger, I know you don’t have a phone and you can’t read but I’m saying it anyway!

I suppose, from my POV, the good thing is that I think purebred dogs are becoming less popular nowadays, due to our knowledge of what this sort of selective breeding can do. My girlfriend's sister has 2 Puggle mixes, and they have protruding snouts, while still looking recognisably like a pug. Its things like that, for me, that make me happy for our knowledge of this sort of thing. We need to fix the mistakes of 'fashion', and give these animals a better quality of life, instead of making them not able to breathe, live, and play.
@rekkariley652
@rekkariley652 2 года назад
Depends a lot on the breed. Some breeds, especially those still actively used for actual work, are still pretty good. Some people choose purebreds because they need particular traits, and purebreds from reliable, ethical breeders have a much greater chance of having those traits while finding the right combination of traits in a mixed breed (especially one from a shelter) is a very risky crapshoot. For example: I’m looking for a psychiatric service dog. This would be not only my first service dog, but my first dog in general. As much as I would love to adopt a rescue from a shelter or organization, I don’t have the money to risk on a dog that has a high chance of washing out of the training program, and I also just do not have the experience or confidence necessary to train out any bad habits or trauma a rescue might have. I really do need to start with a “clean slate” and a breed that has a very reliable chance of having exactly what I need. I ended up settling on the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. They’re not a well-known breed and a bit hard to find, but they have the intelligence, energy, and sensitivity that I need in a service dog, while also being more adaptable to apartments and not quite as clingy as other retrievers. While labs and goldens are much more popular for service work, they’re also victims of their own popularity: shorter lifespans, lots of health problems, some are *too* friendly (meaning they’ve lost virtually all inhibitions and won’t hesitate to bite someone), and there’s massive splits between field lines, show lines, pet lines, etc. Same with poodles and German Shepherds; the latter were already a crapshoot for service work, as they’re so multi-purpose that finding a puppy suited to a particular type of work takes a lot of extra effort and experience. The toller is smaller than a Golden or lab (in the 30-60 pound range, rather than 60-80), they have longer lifespans (12-14+ years, as opposed to 8-10), and are generally much healthier (labs are extremely prone to obesity and goldens have become almost synonymous with cancer). They’re also slightly smarter, which is massively important to me as my panic attacks often render me unable to speak so I need a dog that can figure out what needs to be done without me giving a specific command. Could I find all that in a mixed breed from a shelter? Maybe; it’s next to impossible to know unless I’m able to interact with the dog for months, and I can’t afford that. If I did find a dog with those traits from a shelter, would they also come with a lot of ingrained habits or their own emotional trauma? Definitely, and I don’t have the necessary experience or time to train those habits back out. So my safest bet is to get a purebred Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever from a breeder that has regularly produced service dogs in the past (which I did find, though it does involve a waitlist and traveling to British Columbia). It really depends on the breed, and the culture that has developed around it. Some breeds I am absolutely in support of discontinuing, mostly those who can’t even reproduce anymore without human assistance (for example, several flat-faced breeds now have to be artificially inseminated and can’t give birth without a c-section). But outside of that, it’s more a matter of changing the culture from one that values looks to one that values function.

@@Trazynn maybe... but that doesnt mean a mix is better than a healthy breed. When breeding dogs, they have to be healthy and of good character to put it simple (within the breed-guidelines), so if you get a breed that is generally healthy, its better than a mix. There you wont know what issues the parents might have given on to your dog. So its less about the breed vs mixed debate but more about the which-breed debate. And educate dog-owners BEFORE getting a dog (so less get a dog they are unable to deal with and they end up in shelters). For some dogs standarts are starting to shift again towards a healthier version, and that is defenditely a good thing.

Since moving out and getting my own place a couple decades ago, I’ve had a Pug (was guesstimated to be 2.5-5 yo when I got him), that lived with me for 10 years, and an English (who had just had her third birthday before I got her), and was part of the family for six years. While Leon (the Pug) was an excellent companion, he was definitely bonded to me, even as our family grew. Lyla (The English) was probably the sweetest, kindest dog that I have ever shared life with. Stubborn is putting things lightly, especially when they are comfortable in the most awkward spots. But it was all worth it when Lyla and the person she was cuddling with were both mutually cozy! “Dog glitter”, and vacuuming multiple times a week is worth it! The health issues are intimidating, but a beauty regimen (brushing, nails, ears, nose, paw pads, folds, and tail pockets) and regular checkups will help avoid issues from going too far out of hand! I definitely have a feeling that another English may be what my family needs when the time is here to bring another dog into our home!!

Churro is a real gentleman! This breed overheats very easily so be extra careful during hot (or even warm) weather with their exercise. That plus their difficulty in breathing can have deadly consequences. But…what a sweetie! ❤️

I personally don’t have an English but my brothers best friend does who’s also our neighbor. He has two and they are the sweetest things, the most aggressive thing they’ve done was accidentally scratch me while trying to get up on my lap. They are adorable and I was so saddened to hear that his elder bulldog died last summer because his little sister forgot to open the door for him and he died from a heat stroke. I love them so much, they’re the sweetest

My English bulldog passed away almost 3 years ago. I still cry when I think of her (like right now). I haven't had a dog since her because I can't see myself with any other breed after my Georgia-Bear. I unfortunately haven't had thr money to get another bulldog due to emergency after emergency after emergency. Its left a huge hole in my heart and haven't felt complete since her.

My mom got a bulldog when I was about 9. She had been waiting her whole life, and following along the momma's owners for months, only for him to end up having very bad grand mal seizures starting early on. She was devastated, and seeing them definitely traumatized me. Despite it he made it to about 6 before he was just clearly too miserable to continue, and my mom was once again devastated as she had to have him put down. We buried him under a rosebush in our backyard and it's gotten huge over the years. She never got over it.

it's alway sad ... this is why it's better to choose a healthier dog over the breed .. my dog is a boxer labrador sheperd (possibly other things) never had any problems and she is 8 now. mixing dogs make them less prone to genetics issuse since pure bred dog are all closely related and just the same as humans dogs breeding with their relatives is just as bad and will produce weak genetics. :(

My cute fattie Horacio is turning 10 this year, and everything you said about the breed is so true! They really are great companions but sadly the health problems are terrible sometimes, Horacio nowadays barely does anything other that sleep but until he was five he was such a playful dog 🥰 Also I’m so glad you bathed him on the floor, we once took Horacio to a groomer and apparently they bathed him in a high place and made him get down by himself, and apparently that did hurt him a lot 😞

My brother-in-law had one, she was sweet. Short lived though, sadly. One time his wife came home and the pup was excited to go greet her. Right there and there, the pup dropped dead in the midst of the excitement. It was a heart attack. Scarlet didn't deserve that. Just be mindful of health concerns if anyone adopts one.

I know how it is to have a chronical sick dog. He had two heavy heart attacks when he was a puppy (luckily, he survived both of them), had spine issues, lung issues and issues with his paw. It takes a lot of money and patience, but when he's leaning against you and loves you, all money is worth it. He lived a happy life of 8 and a half years, and I'm proud of that because the vet said that this dog wouldn't even get to the age of 1 year. All money was worth it. Every. Single. Cent.

But breeding standards! Dog shows! CUTENESS THAT SACRIFICES HEALTH! I never liked smooshed face dogs as a kid. Thought they were ugly. Now as an adult I don’t like them because they’re the product of pure inhumanity. And I will never own a dog with a smashed in muzzle. We had a boxer, but he had a longer muzzle and could actually breathe. Amazing. And I wasn’t even really aware that boxers did have that same issue with being bred for having a flattened face until I started seeing them as I would walk my boxer and I was like damn…my boy is WAY cuter AND way healthier.

Oh my goodness. I've owned two dogs as an adult. My first was an EB I named Bobby. He was so sweet and toddler like. He had to be by my or on me (his snout on my feet) while I worked or watched TV. He liked feet. My mom would wear socks when she visited because he like to suck on her feet. (He had a blanket he suckled, LOL). When you say 'furfetti' I laughed. We are still finding 'Bobby' in amongst our seasonal things. It took me almost six years before I could entertain another dog. My GSD, Maica. Sadly I lost her to a stroke at 3 years old right before last Christmas. That was a hard candy Christmas. I love these videos! They help fill the blank. Thank you!

same with some breeds of cat, who decided somewhere that smooshed faces were a good thing? I have a family member who got a french bulldog. He's a sweetheart but had to have surgery to correct his airway pretty much right away. The breeder told them not to do it because he wouldn't make his cute snuffling sounds anymore... you know... because he could breathe. I hate people.

Because they're amazing?! Like she said in the video, they have personalities unlike any other dogs. I've had 5 bulldogs and only 1 had breathing problems. She passed at 6. I also lost one at 6 from cancer. My current bulldogs are 7 and 9. There are a ton of breeders that are making them unhealthy... but there are a lot of them with little or no health problems also. They are beautiful dogs with amazing unique personalities and I will continue to rescue them and have them in my family.

Two of my dogs' nails are black and the one with clear nails has freakishly long quicks. My pack will sit through the grinder, but too many bleeding quicks from the clippers means they go running if they see me holding it. In fact, I sometimes pull out the old clippers if I want them to get out of the kitchen while I'm cooking.
