Why Escobar's Hippo Legacy Still Haunts Colombia

Why smuggle a hippo through Colombian cartel lands? This improbable - and dangerous - task is perhaps the best way of tackling the wild legacy left by Pablo Escobar, the country’s most notorious drug lord. Because the four hippos he imported in the 1980s and abandoned in his hacienda zoo have become a serious cause for environmental concern...
In this video, we explore Colombia’s unusual wildlife problem: hippos, which are native to sub-Saharan Africa, are flourishing in the tropical heat near Medellín. But what impact are they really having on the local ecosystem? And is there any way to halt a biodiversity calamity?

Whats not mentioned in a lot of these videos covering Escobar’s Hippos is the fact that Escobar did not buy them directly from the African continent but from a zoo in Louisiana, United States. This could explain a bit as the animals are descendants of animals that were taken care of well in captivity.

I’m all for protecting animals and all but people can be so damn narrow minded. There’s talk about their presence being potentially devastating so why is it even up to debate? It’s sad yes, but how about at least exterminating a few, at least to the point where the situation is under control. There’s no need to be blindsided by your need to be so self righteous all the damn time. There needs to be some sort of compromise, sometimes there is a need to listen to the science rather than emotions.

They didn’t list one species at risk though!! I’m not one for invasive species but sometimes they can actually benefit an ecosystem. Seeing as the hippos aren’t carnivores. They could easily coexist with other species and not put them at risk. There was more then enough greenery to go around.

Many people are so against death of an individual animal, they don't think of the overall impact that could lead to more deaths. Yes, it is sad an animal has to die, but it's death may protect the lives of not only the surrounding flora and fauna, but the humans too. Animals are not individuals in the same way humans are, and frankly an animal like that could be used in a way that would not let the death go to waste. A hippo could feed a town.

@killiankillz
@killiankillz 3 года назад
@@kitchengun1175 But these hippos are not where they are supposed to be. Is it better to let the surrounding ecosystem drastically change, possibly causing the extinction of other animals and plants? It is very expensive and resource heavy to transport these creatures within Colombia, not to begin to even thinking about moving them transcontinentally. Hippos are vulnerable, yes. The population is considered stable, and they are genetically stable enough we wouldn't have to worry about the individuals in Colombia. And even so, we could harvest genetic material and store it for future use if it was a problem. It is a dangerous feat to move these creatures, as shown in the video. They are difficult to contain and one of the most deadly land mammals to humans. So, what is the best solution here? Leaving them to destroy the native ecosystem and pose a risk to humans? Spending lots of money capturing them and sending them off to zoos and sanctuaries? Killing them and making sure their bodies don't go to waste, feeding local communities? Death is not something people want to think about, but it is extremely important to the circle of life, and believe it or not, conservation.

@SergeantBrowning
@SergeantBrowning 3 года назад
@@scribbles1424 OK you obviously don’t know anything about genetics. Here’s a little bit of information for you. Each species of life on planet earth has what you would call a genetic tolerance. While certain groups of animals will share this number most are different from each other. What this genetic tolerance means is that there is a certain limit of genetic diversity that is required for the continuous propagation of a species without new DNA. This tolerance factors in the random mutations that occur with reproduction. These random mutations given enough time will increase biodiversity. Humans have a very low genetic tolerance especially when compared to other animals. Our genetic tolerance is so low that if the human population dropped below 2000 we would eventually become extinct over the course of about six or seven generations due mostly to medical complications. This genetic tolerance has a lot to do with the amount of children we can have in a lifetime. The more children you can have in one go the more biodiversity you can add back into the gene pool via random mutation. However, while this would be enough biodiversity to allow for the propagation of the species it still leaves it genetically vulnerable to pandemics. A particularly nasty disease popping up could wipe out 90% of the population if it was specifically targeted to that species. This is why we have such a huge problem with monogenetic crops like bananas. This kind of topic is not over blown when it comes to humans because the chances for genetic disorders increase vastly in magnitude simply having a child with a cousin. However, a rat can have kids with its parents or siblings hundreds of times before genetic disorders start to affect the bloodline.
