This series is long overdue! Y’all know that we pull out the scope quite often in our videos, and for good reason. But it’s time to really show how efficient it can make you when diagnosing vehicles. That’s what are aim is with these videos. We will start with an unusual, but cool diag where we avoiding having to pull out some ancient scanners that we would have to brush the cobwebs off of.
This series will be quite extensive. So feedback will be important. Let us know what you are interested in seeing on scopes. This will help us tailor the content to what is going to help you guys. We are really excited about this one! We hope it helps! Enjoy!

Hi Sherwood. As a home gamer learning to use his scope, I'd like to see it used on a primary/secondary ignition coil, relative compression, cam/crank correlation, and can bus lo/hi. Preferably including the scope settings and why they're used. Thanks!

Oscilloscopes are absolutely invaluable. When I was an apprentice in the very late '80s and early '90s, I was the only one interested in the oscilloscope function of the new Krypton tunescope that was purchased by the dealership I started at. I took that manual home many nights and tried to absorb as much as I could and put it into practice. There wasn't a lot of opportunity to use it there, as it was a new car dealership, but after I moved jobs, it really became handy, and in my 3rd year I became the go-to guy for tricky (intermittent mostly) diagnosis', after I convinced my new boss that we needed an oscilloscope (I forget what that model was but it was spendy and they put a considerable rate surcharge on for its use).

Cars where much simpler. Carburetor, mechanical ignition controls. Not anymore. I got buy with a tach/dwell, vacuum Guage, and a timing light. 90% of what I know is obsolete.

The best tool to learn about and understand electricity and electronics because it allows you to “see” it. You should show the relationship between ckp, cmp, primary ignition, injector control, etc.

I understand what you're saying about scopes being vital. I think it is most helpful to differentiate between VISUALIZING with a scope versus measuring with a multi-meter. A labscope/picoscope is a great way to visualize an issue and display events over time, but it only supercedes a meter reading, which supercedes a test light. I teach three methods and require a scope when behavior is intermittent or irrational. Yet an irrational reading is simply understanding the expected range under load and not under load. Shop owner here, diagnostic lead and service writer.

It would really help teach novices if you talk less about the setup, but prep them in advance by taking an image of the ERD and circle the colors you are going for, then show them setting up the channels and lead types on the car. It's helpful to show the process. I appreciate the effort that goes into these.

I'm just a DIY'er. A while back I was working on a transmission issue. I was fairly sure it was the transmission module, but did't want to make $1,000 guess. $800 for the module/valve body and $200 to have it programed. I didn't have a scope, so I bought a 1 channel scope and this little thing was awesome and worked great. Fixing my families cars is expensive, because I pay for everything, parts and all.

Scopes are a must, but most shops only have a 4 channel scope, Pico, Snap On ect. Try not to use more then 4.

Totally understand that. That is part of why we are doing this. We hope it inspires shop owners to make the investment into a tool like this so that their techs can properly diagnose more difficult issues and set themselves apart from other shops. Yes it’s an investment, but it pays off in the long run. This isn’t something a tech should have to buy. It’s the responsibility of the shop. That’s our opinion at least.

Good idea for a series. As you do these scope videos please explain what and why with each "lesson". For example if you scope a low pressure pump explain how you can count the commutators and measure rpm or ramp up of amperage. I do believe this is the most missed part of scope videos. Understanding why the vehicle is faulty bc of said part is great but understanding why you called the part for failure is most valuable. Good luck with videos and thank you for all the videos out to date.

pico makes a 2 channel scope 2200 series. I think they are $100. Not for automotive but with a little configuring they will work wonders. I use it a lot.

Great idea to do this scope series. I bought a cheap hantek, to get my feet wet. I've only used it a few times, as I'm not actually a tech. I'm an internal service advisor at a large used car dealer. I do get involved with some deep diags, to help my guys. I really need to spend time learning how to properly set it up. One suggestion is using it to test signals & PWM signals from things like rear hatch motors. Thanks for all your work putting these videos out.

I'd love an explanation of ignition waveforms. Primary and secondary and what it looks like when various problems cause a missfire. High resistance, carbon tracking, open windings, shorted coil, lean etcetera

I think Snap On really could have changed the amount of scope usage if they would've kept the Vantage line available and AFFORDABLE. I like the series because if the trade is going to improve it's image, this is the way forward.

I cut the ends off of my chassis ears microphones and put them on the scope. Gives a visual when diagnosing wheel bearing noise and certainly eliminates diagnosing by ear. Any in-cylinder pressure transducer, and pulse sensor diag videos would be welcomed, too!

I’ve scoped fuel pumps before and found worn brushes but I’ve always been curious how to properly calculate RPM.. throwing my uscope on a blower motor has turned into one of my favorite tests.. that’s a good one to show. In cylinder using a wps500 or something similar would be cool to see as well.

Cool. I just picked up a scope (pico 2204a) for DIY automotive...it is awesome. So far, I've done CAN, L and K line networks (using an obd2 breakout box and scan tool). I also did, battery voltage on startup, and put a lead on a US quarter on top of a coil to get a waveform (you guys should do a video on these) There is so much info in the waveforms when you learn how to read them.

ntc , negative temperature coefficient sensor. most all vehs use them .when temp goes up they work opposite of what u think. when hot more current flow dropping the voltage pressure. yes voltage is only pressure. use a scope on your 110 out let and you will see its not 110 peak pressure, the power of the scope is awesome and getting better with all the new add ons.

I worked on these Cadillacs back in ‘85 during my apprenticeship at Bob Chango GM in Key West,FL. right out of high school. He sold the whole GM line. I eventually became a master tech within the 8 years working at 3 GM dealerships. The coolest diagnostics feature with these C, E & K body Cadillacs was that you used the HVAC control panel to read codes and data for the ECM and BCM. And yes, I replaced a bunch of those cooling fan control modules under warranty and customer pay in those days. Great memories!

A scope is a window into the circuit. Suggestion for a video, scope can bus and introduce different faults to see symptom, wave form and what codes set. Short to ground in both can high and low simultaneous and separate, short together, short to power, introduce voltage spikes. This project familiarizes and gives direction when diagnosing problem cars. Thank you for considering it

You will get a lot of interest in affordable scope options. The full featured 4+ channel scopes are really out of reach for a small low volume operation. And, if you get into the lower cost ones you might touch on floating ground vs shared ground inputs. It can mess a lot of techs up, especially when trying to learn new fundamentals.

Hi, I'm new to scoping here in England, using a pico. I have an Audi Q5 2.0 Tdi, the engine check light comes on intermittently and sometimes the glow plug light flashes also. The dtc's show exhaust temp sensor and O2 sensor signal fault. If you could possibly include a test to best find intermittent faults like these it would be very much appreciated. Keep up the great work.

some techs if they do have a scope, it would be a 4 channel . i would start off with simple diag. and work your way up to more advanced. explaining how to set up for the newer techs, just my 2cents! but this is your show have fun with it. keep up the good work i wish there were more shops like yours.

if it is truly a sensor it appears to be a negative temperature coefficient sensor , so u could use a surface probe and get a temp reading on the line at the sensor also. that would really let u no if sensor is bad

Sherwood , really enjoying the content and knowledge you guys are sharing . I bought a small a small oscilloscope and would like to see how to use it to troubleshoot anti skid systems properly . I had to do a shotgun repair due to time restraints at the time but thought this tool would have really helped me diagnose the problem.

i can assume at 9.05 the ntc sensor is hot so current flows more hence voltage pressure drop and thats when the fan was commanded on. then as fan ran cooling the refrigerant causing the sensor to cool causing it to slowly increase resistance so very low current flow causing voltage to go hi again and the freon wouldn't be cooled instantaneous causing the slow rise in voltage and that is what we are seeing. which i would expect during the yellow showing fan command on cooling. to me the sensor is working. wished pressure gauges were being shown at this time. please put more in the next videos .i no you want to show the scope in action ,but we need all information along with the graph so people can put 2 and 2 together. like in this case where sensor is and what to expect from it on the graph and pressures shown. not trying to stir things up by no means, just trying to help so others can relate to whats happening and what they expect to see on the graph i have been using scopes 25 years and in the beginning you have to understand what ur testing and understand what u should see. its very easy to misinterpret what you see.

I work at a Honda dealer and we don't use scopes and in the training center doesn't teach us anything with scopes. Now on the other hand Toyota has a pico scope we can add the the TIS and we can do indepth stuff. I want to get the little one channel scope from aeswave the uscope and use that to head diag a misfire on Hondas. To see if it's a coil/spark plug or valve problem. Maybe compression. If you can do a video on that would be great! Happy 4th of July!

Get a pico 2204, amp clamps, and go to rotkee and buy for dirt cheap all test sensors . you can do everything.

It is absolutely impossible to diagnose some vehicle faults without a Scope , you would only be able to get so far into many diagnosis’s before guessing and throwing parts at things. They eliminate that guess work, allowing you to be so much more efficient as a motor vehicle tech, giving you the proof you need to ensure you’re making the correct call the first time.

Would like to see you diagnose back up cameras and park assist systems using a scope. Recently had a back up camera not working, tech replaced several parts. It got dumped on me when the tech quit. Aftermarket LED headlights were putting interference on the camera circuit. My little pocket scope picked up the noise right away.

I hope I can afford a Pico scope or some type of good automotive scope before too much longer. I have an Owon 70Mhz 2 channel scope meter that I'm using now, you can get those for a bit under 200 bucks, and I love that thing. It has become one of my goto tools. It has a good enough resolution to check most automotive signals, it even works pretty well for Can-bus signals. Granted it doesn't have all the nice features that a Pico or an ATS unit would have, but it's a good place to start from. Grab yourself a couple of Hantek attenuators and a secondary ignition probe, and some extra test leads, and you can get a good start learning about scope use.

Awesome idea for this video series. What I'd like to see: 1- How you properly use the scope to determine cat. converter efficiency 2- How can you determine if a direct injection injector is bad or not. 3- Smart coils... 3, 4 and 5 wire coils. How do you diag. Them? How to get a good primary waveform.

I'd love to see from you, both as an influencer in the automotive repair community and a platform to learn for not just the professional but the DIYer as well, is a database(google drive or what ever you want to use) to supply known goods wave forms for make, model, engine, and component. Yes there are locations where people can get known good wave forms both free and paid but the more data bases available the better. Maybe even add a section of the bad component with an explanation of what is bad witht he wave form

I am an ats scope user now but learned on snap on. What I don't like about my 8 channel ats scope is that some of these crank patterns and can network patterns don't show up with the detail I am used to seeing on a snap on. I can still use the patterns but I'm curious what your opinion is on using the ats on can patterns and some of these high tooth count ckp sensors.

If it is the 4100 there's also camshaft and distributor gear problems along with intake manifold gasket failure making many a technician perceive it to be faulty head gaskets😂😂😂

This is unfortunately a common reality in our industry, then I get a call. Hi, I heard it through the grapevine you specialize in vehicle diagnostics and the car comes to me with modules piled in the back seat along with half the interior panels and the engine cover/s. Many times introducing even further issues into the vehicle than the customer initially had. I’m a gluten for punishment.

I lost interest in cars around 1976. The hardest thing for me is schematics. It's gotten much worse. If you gave me a premium autel, I wouldn't know how to use it.

Hey guys I'm a bit confused here it would take way too long to try and explain it here on RU-vid especially since there's other factors involved first things first is it a front wheel drive with a 4100, I still would like to know what the data is coming off of the eec panel to know whether or not there are any BCM codes which would be obtained by holding buttons the data is also indicated on the eec panel if my memory serves me correct now that sensor along with the coolant sensor from the engine and the engine feeds that information from the coolant sensor to the body control computer allows that body control computer to put a variable voltage or a pulse voltage to control the fan speeds even if there's a sensor problem there I don't think the pressures would get that high because the coolant temperature should be up there to where it would give information to the body control computer to also turn on the fans remind many years of experience I would find lots of times the sensor return going to ecms or bcms would be a problem anyway the coolant sensor should have driven those cooling fans even at a slower speed and you should have seen that on the picture on the scope again I'm a bit confused cuz I don't feel like I have enough information here to understand the conclusion drawn by the patterns on the scope OFF THE BEATEN PATH MAYBE A WHEEL SPEED SENSOR SCOPE PATTERN AND ALSO USING THE CAN BREAK OUT BOX OBSERVE SOME OF THOSE PATTERNS ⁉️

How about injectors, misfires, crank sensor, throttle body.how about showing a new technician how to properly set up a scope on a certain sensor or something and where the leads go and how to actually read it on the graph.
