Great video and info! I work in the footwear dept of REI, wish we could just have this video playing on loop for customers. We are constantly reiterating this info to have people consider trail runners as their regular hiking and multipurpose footwear.

Ah, a fellow footie rep! I think people have it so stuck in their brains that hiking = boots since that's what we've done for so long, and newbs have no idea what the current "trends" are.

Love my Salomon trail runners. I do also have Merrel Moabs for winter hiking in the Whites. But I'm always to happy when I get to switch to the runners once the weather starts to turn toward mud season and then summer. I'm happiest when my feet are filthy, so I appreciate the picture.🤣

Haha! I'm with you- it's been a good day when my feet are filthy! You're brave hiking in the Whites in winter- definitely conditions that demand boots!

Nice and rising topic actually, but for me personally boots are only way 😅 Perfectly narrated my friend

I usually hike barefoot, and carry barefoot sandals for when I need to slip something on, like when the ground is too hot. In Florida, well draining trail runners are recommended because hiking in FL means hiking through water, rivers, swamps, mud, cypress strands.

I'd imagine in Florida, the less on your feet, the better! I love the idea of hiking barefoot. It seems like a great way to connect with the earth beneath your feet. 🤗

A great summary that definitely captured my transition from years of heavy, rugged boots and massive, weighty backpacks! I also find that having a fairly minimal sole (and training the heck out of my ankles, mostly with a generic Dyna-Disc and wearing exclusively barefoot shoes) actually is way easier on my knees on descents than a big padded sole (e.g. Hoka) which make the foot more rigid and incline you to land mid-foot or heel first. The ability to land on the ball of my foot and use my foot/ankle as the primary shock absorber is so much better on my knees. It feels bizarre and amazing to step down the trail like that.
@WanderingSwitchback
@WanderingSwitchback Месяц назад
Building up that ankle strength is critical. I can always tell when I haven't been trail running in awhile, because my ankles get SO SORE (in a sore muscles kind of way) after! I'm with you on the flexibility of how to land on your foot- heel striking has never made my knees happy. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment! 🙂

Great video! I enjoy the minimalist boots from Vivobarefoot myself. Waterproof and you can still feel the ground with them. I’ve always been curious about the switch and why so many hikers recommend TRs vs boots.

Thank you! I was curious about it as well, so it was fun to do a deep dive on this! I love geeking out like this! 😂🙃

i 'm stuck with boots, 'cause i like being protected by water. It's a kind a comfort to able to cross river. Never been wet (winter time also) Kansas meindl

I've purchased boots twice over the years for hiking and both times I wasted my money. They rub and are too narrow, and I get blisters. Trail runners are the only way to go for me. I think you hit all of the valid points! Excellent video. What I wish manufacturers would start doing more of is offering shoes that are actually the shape of the human foot... And start offering more widths for the variety of feet out there. Everyone knows that feet swell when hiking. Let's buy footwear with that in mind.
@WanderingSwitchback
@WanderingSwitchback Месяц назад
I totally agree! That's part of my love of Topos. Not only are my feet wide, but I really like being able to spread my toes and have a broader sole. Boots have always been uncomfortable for me. I had a trip a few years ago (before I made the switch when backpacking) where I ended up having to take out the insoles of my boots and hike like that because I needed the space so much, and I had so many blisters forming until I removed those insoles. Ugh.

@@WanderingSwitchback I don't even look at women's shoes anymore. Just not wide enough. Unluckily, when I tried up to a couple years ago, the Topos weren't wide enough either. I have some NB that are, however they are wide all over and I do experience some slippage due to this. Oh well. It's a struggle but so many people struggle with worse things than this!

I ust cannot do the switch ... I tried low boot its ok ... but it depends I am not "TRAIL" running on a trail ... I go scrambling and out of the trail quite often , I am a bit agressive and I need security. But idk it looks so tempting like you are on clouds. Like via Ferrata and a lot of rock climbing low approach shoes yeah. But long distance idk ...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it! That said, it may be worth trying something on smoother trails and seeing what feels good on your feet. Rock climbing is way outside my wheelhouse (severe carpal tunnel for a long time), but I know stiff is important there!

I guess I'm crazy. I wear waterproof Merrell boots in winter or rain. Merrell non waterproof boots for summer or desert hiking. I wear Alta Trail runners for relatively flat terrain or city walks. I will admit the Merrells are holding up much better than the Altas. All 3 are very comfortable.

I'm glad it's working for you! Whatever keeps your feet happy, right? 🙂 Boots definitely hold up so much longer than trail runners. Maybe someday there will be shoes that can keep up with boots in that regard!

Hello! I have a question. Would a trail running shoe with 6mm drop be suitable for hiking?
@WanderingSwitchback
@WanderingSwitchback 8 дней назад
As long as it works for your feet, absolutely! I prefer anything from 4mm to 10mm, some people prefer 0mm. Test it out and see how your body and feet feel. 🙂

Not sure why this is “news.” Ray Jadine wrote about switching to trail runners in his book, Beyond Backpacking, Lightweight Hiking, back in 2000. At the same time, New Balance came out with their 804 model, which was quickly adopted by both AT and PCT hikers. There have also been popular “mid” choices like the Merrell Moab 2, which have been around since 2010, at least. Before that, the Lowa Tempest Low was the in-between choice for thru-hikers. For a hot minute, Barefoot and Minimalist shoes tried to make an entry into UL backpacking, but this fad was quickly overrun by zero-drop trail runners such as the Altra Lone Peak series.

No one is saying it's "news." Simply information. A lot of people getting into hiking and backpacking think they need boots, where in reality, they'll probably have a better experience in trail runners. I hope to help people have that better experience through information. 😊 Thank you for your comment and for watching!

@@WanderingSwitchback I’m didn’t think boots were still a thing. REI, for example, sells maybe one three-season leather boot in the store, a few offerings that are more high top versions of beefy soled shoes than boots, and then everything else is a trail runner. I would say the switch has mostly been made, judging by the footwear I see on trail.
