With the recent Star Wars Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker - teaser trailer released at D23 we see an evil Dark side Rey and a new folding double-bladed red Lightsaber and I'm going to explain why it makes no sense at all from a practical perspective.

@@nathanpetkoff7052 There aer a few Vader fight animations out there that do make use of this fact: he uses the Force to turn off the opponent's lightsaber. There is also Yoda turning off Ventress' lightsaber in the Clone Wars show. The reason not everyone can do it, is that you have to be substantially stronger in the Force than your opponent.

The Jedi Temple Guards in TCW had an actual SaberStaff like Darth Maul if I remember correctly. For some reason Rebels decided to change the Temple Guard’s outfit as well as how their lightsaber functions.

First of General Krell is not a very popular character, he was in the clone wars meaning not many people would have heard of him, and he was a villain with no interesting story to him. The only way I could imagine a design like that being useful is if you locked blades with someone in the double-bladed position and then closed the blade on them from the other side where they are open and even if they somehow managed to dodge it, you could still potentially twist their saber out of their hand once the saber closed and locked.

If I remember my Kenshin correctly. And I'm pretty sure I do, since I love the series. Actually have his Sakabatō Katana (made like a real Katana, which is a pain because you need to apply oil very often, so it doesn't rust). The reason given for the two blades and a cut from them being hard to recover from is because the two cuts so close together can't be stitched. Sure, it's not a super solid reason, and a single cut (especially in those times) was pretty dangerous on it's own. But a single cut, you can stitch and stop the bleeding. This two bladed weapons wound, you can't do that. And I'm pretty sure there is some inherit logic that a wound you can't sew shut is more dangerous than one you can. Still a funny line from Shad though.

@@_Feanor_. Yeah, that's exactly right. It's supposedly a "vicious sword of certain death" as there is no way to medically treat the double cut effectively. During combat it presents no real advantage aside from being easy to double wield when separate, it seems more like a sadist's weapon.

The worst part about the “two is better than one” logic is that one is absolutely better than two. Having more blades means more weight, but also force distribution. Two blades have far less cutting power than one blade. If it’s sharp enough then it should cut regardless, but the severity of the cut is still different; and it shouldn’t matter if the wound is more or less severe, because a massive wound is already a massive wound. :)

If not for the fact that it would've been too mechanically complex for appropriate periods, I feel like a folding version of a double-bladed conventional sword would make quite a lot of sense, considering one of your primary criticisms of those was the physical awkwardness of carrying such a weapon for personal defence. One which could be folded and quickly unfolded (and reliably kept that way in combat) might have made it much more viable. So it's a little ironic that the only time I've ever seen the concept applied is to lightsabers, where the issue it could otherwise solve is a non-issue.

I've always liked the lightsaber "pykes" (which is honestly way more similar to a spear since it's not 7 feet+ long) where you have a long shaft with a short blade on one end. I feel like that would translate better from staff fighting. Maybe they should have somebody with one of those alongside a gungan energy shield so we can have straight up jedi hoplites. It'd also be cool to have lightsabers with both a crossguard and a basket hilt so we can stop the hand slicing nonsense. I loved the montage, by the way. 😂

The cross guard is there on Kylo’s weapon because the crystal (the energy source) is cracked and damaged, which is why the blade looks so different compared to other lightsabers: it’s unstable, and the cross guards are there as “vents” for the excess energy the crystal is throwing off.

I think it's actually much more practical to transport like that. It dangles less on the belt and it fits into more bags. You don't lose anything with having the hinge there and you gain a potentially surprising angle of attack if there's a quick release.

What just occurred to me is that this entire sequence with Rey encountering her evil counterpart is supposed to be either a vision or a dream. Combined with how weirdly specific this sword configuration is, makes it almost seem like this is actually something Rey previously thought about, something she imagined at some point beforehead.

I think the best value of this folding design is actually the value in storage and carrying it. Not with lightsabers, but physically swords. So in the video about double bladed lightsaber, you mentioned it wasn't practical to carry around like a sword, but this design actually solves that issue. You can fold it and sheath both blades together at your hip, as well as draw them together smoothly as well. Provided you had a great locking system in the folding mechanism, you could actually have a double bladed sword with none of the practical issues mentioned earlier.

One thing to consider is that Rey can swap between the two configurations at will, and swapping from the standard two blades to the parallel configuration would have some uses. Imagine that you're clashing blades with Rey, and then the other beam suddenly swipes up and gets you.

Here's some thoughts on how this could make sense: When you hit someone with this saber in the darth maul configuration, you can close it (like scissors) and thus attack from two angles - this would require a ton of practise, I think. If the handle is lightsaber-blade resistant, you have an experimental D-guard of some sort. If you want to use the lightsaber for pleasuring yourself (as a female) you can halfway open it and use it to stimulate both... ok, there's really no real reason, sorry.

As I see, there is one advantage in the foldable part of the sword to the normal double blade, and that is when they lock blades, and they do that a lot, you can strike with the second blade, without removing the pressure from the first blade. In that way, it can cause damage or at least it can cause the enemy retreat, of course you can only use this feature in duels, if there are multiple foes, you should stay with the two bladed Darth Maul style
