The problem is that the press shouldn't even be presenting this Information until it's fact checked, but they also want to make money fast. There should be limits to giving out information that is false or just very uninformed. I get the right for free media but is all this false information really worth dividing up the country,causing riots and even causing multiple deaths?
EXACTLY. So many times on the news I will hear reporters say "There are rumors that...." or "It is believed that....". So whatever they say isn't actually a fact or true, they are just saying things that they believe. I've sat there yelling at my TV, "If it isn't 100% factual then don't even say it. No one wants to hear what you THINK. You're a news station, we want to hear what you KNOW." It's people who can't differentiate between facts and thoughts that divide us all. Without a doubt the MSM is dividing the US more than ever. I don't know why they want to do it, but it sure is working
Well, the pool of misinformation is ubiquitous. You can't limit everyone and mistakes are inevitable. News organizations should be incentivised to do a better job of notifying viewers that what they're listening to could be falsehoods. Meanwhile the viewership and people in general need to accept that what they're hearing from news, from media in general, may not always be true and in the greater picture that their beliefs aren't or at least should not be precious.
Dangerous road to go down. We've gotta preserve the free media, because the alternative is government control of the media. I think we should incentivize media to adopt a co-operative or perhaps a nonprofit model, because the profit incentive is obviously the main reason this misinformation gets through, but we can't let the government control the media. That would exacerbate the problem rather than solve it.
Maybe before telling people that they are wrong about something, we can introduce the idea of how hard it is to accept mistakes. That should give their mind a tool to overcome the feeling of being attacked when proven wrong.
That would require some minimal self awareness on their part. A lot of people I know jump straight to flipping it on you and saying you're the one in the wrong.

There needs to be active fact checking during the presidential debates. Not just a prompt on the bottom of the screen or RU-vid videos done the day afterwards we need non partisan groups with teams of researchers that actively call out lies and misinformation on live TV during the debates. If people went into elections with a mindset that these people frequently lie to voters it would lead to a much more skeptical nation during the presidency
We also need the people asking the questions to call politicians out on lies. Newsroom did a good segment on that and it would be great if we ever tried it.
Most conservatives are much more emotionally invested in their own beliefs than liberals. New information that could cause cognitive dissonance for conservatives, is simply avoided or dismissed. Willful ignorance is their defense mechanism against reality.

@jmlkinc Well the real problem here is not that there are people that believe his lies (although this is an issue). It's just that media is overreporting everything he's doing. In doing so, they are creating a perpetual feedback loop that Trump is taking advantage of in order to insert himself into the collective mindshare of the nation. Think about it, Trump has literally dominated the news for the past 9 months. That's not only insane, but insanely dangerous. Part of dismantling the Trump propaganda train is stop giving him so much coverage.
It's easy to stop habitual liars: just call them out on it immediately. Let them tell their lie then just bluntly call them out, right in front of everyone and keep doing it every time they try to deny it extricate themselves. It embarrasses the liar and makes him look untrustworthy to everyone.

you get my "like" on this video for very witty banter with off camera-man (guessing its Lowndes), great interview, great writing and reporting, and bravely blasting those cargo short photos. Brutal! (we've all been there).
I think the best strategy to debunk misinformation is for the news team to get statistics and information proving why the misinformation is false, and then get someone who believes the misinformation like a well established politician or political commentator, to argue that the information is not false. Then, assuming the right side of the argument wins, the viewers would not only have most of their skepticism about the statistics and facts themselves removed, but also viewers would likely be more inclined to accept that they were wrong, because a well established, university educated person would have been proved wrong on TV. Too often we just see a group of presenters agreeing with each other on information, which is bound to make people skeptical.
It's like when the topic of climate change comes up, and they invite one from each side on the panel. That gives the viewer the sense that the consensus is 50/50, when in fact it's something like 98% of all scientists that say manmade climate change is real.

I actually heard MSNBC do a "fact check" recently that stated Trump has only built 3 miles of border wall when you can go on the official customs and border protection site and find that this is an outright lie. The term "Fact Checking" can be used as priming tool to manipulate the subconscious of the receiver in to assuming that the information they are consuming is truth when it potentially could be false.

I'm a european, not either hillary or trump supporter, but I truly hate Trump more. I don't get how some Americans can't notice, how he is just pure shittalking, and somehow probably going to end up starting WW3. I'm VERY happy to not be American. I don't think that you'll find VERY LESS or if even ANY Trump supporters in Switzerland.
Propably the reason is, that if you don't like to hear that you're wrong, you just simply won't watch/listen to it. You can switch channels on TV and watch shows that tell you you're right, and you can do the same thing on RU-vid or any other platform. So the people acutally watching debunks are the people who already know the truth and they are against it, simply for the same reason: it feels good when they tell you you're right.
There's a Royal Institution video where Tom Scott talks about how truth can be subjective. It's really interesting and some of it could be applied here.

At this rate, you should be fact checking news organisations first and foremost. They are the ones that spread their reports or opinions, (true or false) in the first instances and can continue their ongoing narrative regardless of the facts; noting that they do so for monetary gain.

GDI Agreed, however I'm not shifting blame. I'm including news organisations within this argument. I don't blame news organisations for trumps lies - there's a difference. Keep in mind, Trumps job is to govern a country, news organisations are setup to report facts. I find it hypocritical that some of these companies can report and fact check presidential statements and not 2 mins later they are openly dishonest or ignorant whilst presenting their next article.

Fact checking is not needed when you have a heart that loves this world. Your heart will tell you the truth. CNN, for example, invited a bunch of Trump supporters onto their show and asked them if they believe Trump didn't condemn Charlottesville tough enough. All of them said he condemned white supremacy good enough, and the CNN anchor looked so disappointed. For example, when a terrorist attack occurs, they don't convey it as a string of events in a very long line of terror attacks, but rather as an isolated incident. Or when a black man may kill a police officer, it's an isolated incident. But if a police officer kills a black man, it's a long string of events that convey police incompetence and "racism". These are all just examples off the top of my head, and completely disregards the fact that CNN probably is overreacting to something Trump has done or said, as we speak!
