In US news and current events today, author Mikki Kendall wants to know why feminism continues to ignore most women it claims to represent. Listen as this writer of color gives a modern critique on mainstream feminism in her new book, ‘Hood Feminism.’
In a series of essays, Kendall gives space to would-be feminists who too often do not feel welcome in the movement at large. She also argues that issues like affordable housing, food insecurity, and police brutality are feminist issues, too.

Very well said. I grew up in poverty, raised by a single mother. I can't help but ask; Where were the feminists when my mother was skipping dinner every other night just to make sure I didn't starve? Where were they when she got her back broken at work after a 500 lb patient fell on her, and she didn't get workers compensation? I don't know. Screaming in the streets and burning their bras somewhere I guess, while the strongest woman I've ever known in my life worked herself into an early grave making sure we had a roof over our heads and food on the table. Yes. Too busy surviving to fight for their own rights, without question. By the time my mother had time in her life to dedicate to anything like that, her body was far too broken to get out and help. She's 54 years old now, on disability, in HUD housing, and can't get around her own apartment without a walker.

@@protectbodythetans The point is that there are women too busy struggling to survive, to be able to participate in "feminist activities". Their voices aren't heard because they don't have the time to speak out. Then they are ignored by the feminist movement at large. There's nothing "stupid" about it. It's a genuine concern that should be addressed. A woman's world is a very different place between the middle class suburbs and the impoverished shitholes of our country, but typically it's the suburbanite women we hear from. The ones with free time on their hands and more ready access to information and feminist communities.

JB JG im not arguing that, i have a problem with the central tenant of her argument, i.e. feminism will not be able to advance any other feminist cause that it isn’t women poverty, because poor women will not support them (since they are busy with well basically surviving). I mean i guess what she is saying if you are struggling to get food and meds then you will be kind of short sighted and not able to see the bigger picture and fight for feminism. THIS IS NOT TRUE, AS YOU JUST SAID, FEMINISM ORIGIN CAME FROM POVERTY.

JB JG women who created feminism were the women who were struggling to survive, work, buy food, take care of their kids as a single mothers while constantly being shamed by society. Feminism is not a rich white woman thing as this video AND conservative media wants you to believe

You have my sympathy on how difficult you have had it. Growing up watching your mother struggle to do things for you must have been difficult, and im sorry for how ir ended. Buuut, not to knock you personally, its not exactly a gender issue. Many men have the problem of being too poor to keep a kid, if they can even get custody in the first place.

@@PunkShockRock No, not really. I'm just assuming that you'd probably understand more about what the author is trying to say by reading her book rather than a 4-minute video. I don't know this woman, but I still know that it is difficult to condense all your thoughts for an interview.

The rhetoric, while not having the best name, is not inherently divisive It's made the highlight the difference in success that women find in the feminist movement depending on their race or gender. I will agree that the name kinda sucks though since it a word with a very negative connotation.

I'm a black man...a good amount of the problems she mentioned can be helped by having a man in the home. Now are there dead beat men out there? Yup...so what's the solution? Stop choosing these men. Instead choose men who will lead, provide for, teach, and protect a family. Is it hard for you to choose a good man, well get your father, or brother, or uncle, or cousin involved in vetting these men.

@@amandast.27 You're not wrong. It's on my list of secondary priorities though. I'm a Biochem major, so squeezing in political sciences and law is a little difficult, because it doesn't contribute much for me. So it's a side project, like learning to dance and play the violin. I did get A's in National Government and Microeconomics, though.

Or maybe just about news or general small talk, with your neighbor or just someone you know from somewhere... Basically same reasons we talk to people we don't know or don't know that good in general, I guess.
