"But when Finland refused, the Soviets labeled Finland as a fascist state and invaded the country" "The Soviets expected to face very little resistance and envisioned that they'd simply walk in and take over the entire country with ease" Incredible that Russia's playbook for invading neighbors never changed from Soviet times.

One thing you forgot to mention about the Karelia question is that Karelia today is soooo underdeveloped, thanks to Russia's neglect and mistreatment of said province, that building the infrastructure up to Finnish standards would bankrupt the whole country, which is another reason why so many Finns oppose taking back Karelia. Awesome video otherwise, keep it up! Cheers.
@sl06bhytmar

It wouldn't bankrupt us but it would certainly be taxing, also there are hardly any people anymore left who used to live down there so it is just matter 'historical values' if we wanted it back. @6:48 Terrible BS. There's no discussion whatsoever in Finland to get their lost areas back. Even if Russia would offer these, Finland barely would want to take 'em. After 80 years of Russian influence and the ruling of these areas has practically destroyed them and nothing Finnish is left there. It would be vast money and effort needed to build up these areas again. No sense. And "would Finland try to fight these areas back"? They already tried (1941-44), and it didn't end up well. Now that it's long-lasting peace in Finland, the idea of Finland attacking is the most stupid idea one could imagine. And Finland's power wouldn't even match Russia's. Finland has invested in defending, not attacking.

The video is about the Finnish Winter War when the soviet attacked Finland without war declaration. The winter war lasted a few months and 420,000 Carelians were evacuated in two weeks after the end of the war. The end of Finnish Winter War is followed by a period known as "The intermediate war time period" and in connection with the outbreak of the WW2, Finland allied itself with Germany with the intention of winning back Karelia. This war is called the Finnish Continuation War which, however, resulted in Finland once again having to hand over Karelia to the Russians in the end of WW2 and for a second time the Karelians were evacuated. Karelians are a very active society in Finland to keep its heritage alive, also specializing tours every year to visit their family places, now gone of course but with help of GPS and old maps they track down the areas. The Carelians also make an annual Evacuation Walk in memory of the giving up their homeland. The Carelians also have their own burial ground, a beautiful site in a Helsinki cemetery. I'm the second generation of Carelians and probably the culture will die out with time.

Majority of these shelters are not like that high tech one you showed at the beginning. Most of them are quite old and meant for 2-3 days tops, after that everything runs out. Power, food, water. And living in complete misery since theyre going to be packed as full as possible. More for surviving the fires or chemical attacks than nuclear war. Yes, the Finns has long ago realised that preparations designed to give them a better chance against adversity like military attacks on their country must be made long before such measures are acutely needed, because if, or when such damage mittigation measures are needed - but not available - it is too late, and the nation would be left very voulnerable to attacks and for that matter to other seriously destructive events, like perhaps a huge sun mass ejection of hot plasma heading straight for the earth.! Having somewhere to shelter under such conditions could easily make the difference between annihilation or survival.🤔!!!

Fear is wrong word here yes indeed, more correct would be something like: lack of trust. Winter war was not the first time Russia attacked Finland nor was it the last and Finns know it. That's why they have been preparing this whole time fortifying their positions to hunker down and wait for the crucial moment, just sitting behind that loaded mg and waiting to hear the Russian urraaa! scream. Still I gotta admit there has been moments where Finnish maiden has been sleeping for example the land sales, but after 2014 Crimea scenario Finland has picked up on the phase again more. Never should fall a sleep on guard duty.

Beautiful piece. All the action of the Finn's is a reflection of being in proximity of their larger bellicose neighbour which has seen it fit to embrace dictatorship at the expense of democracy and freedom of expression and non violent expression of dissenting views. People especially here in Africa see Russia as some form of benign and benevolent dictatorship that unlike the West did not colonise Africa. Well guess what it is only checnya and Belarus who operate oppressive dictatorships that are at ease with Russia, all the other countries prefer to operate democracies of various shades rather than the three aforementioned countries.

These are common knowledge, but hey... For one, landsales near defense or infrastructure installations are reviewed and can be potentially denied by the government to prevent espionage, sabotage and the creation of secret hostile forward supply depots. These measures are being reviewed at the moment to prevent the abuse of shell entities. The forced purchase and denial of future acquisition of any land by any Russian entity is currently in discussion, but legally problematic as people are supposed to have rights. While not only a part of total defense planning the National Emergency Supply Agency constantly develop new infrastructure to ensure that basic services run and that all basic needs are met for the whole populace (food, medication, manufacturing tools) during any crisis - war or even a pandemic. These goods are stored similarly to munitions reserves mostly in double blind sealed warehouse bunkers, where the staff nor the owners know what they actually store. Some were unsealed during the pandemic to minimise critical sortages. Normally goods are rotated out before expiration to minimise waste - like a pantry. Sweden used to have a similar system, but it was cut. The interesting part though is that there are a LOT of them. It is considered a given that Russian espionage is competent enough to locate such bunkers though likely with a great deal of effort that would be noticed. Alas, they would be fine logistical targets. However, it is unlikely that Russian Intelligence can find all of them, let alone bomb all of them. Or maybe they could and would waste strike capability on infrastructure build deep into solid rock. Either way, it is a win. Then, if you have any expertise in a useful field the Finnish Defense Force will assign you to an applicable position to best use their limited manpower. Limited in a sense that each dead soldier is a loss to the civilian economy. There won't much left if by "scraping the barrel" 60 percent of the population is dead. Lastly and very cynically, human capital is Finland's largest asset so each dead defender is lost potential from Russian war spoils. All infrastructure and technology is set to be destroyed along with required operating knowledge. Artillery charts exist for the whole country and continquencies for continquencies. Again very VERY cynically and going to logical extreme, the Finnish total defense plan dictates a methodology to kill as many people as efficiently as possible and denying any potential gains from a war - a bloodbath. It is sad and distasteful, but without outside intervention that is the only effective plan.That is a plan fostered by WW2 and the Cold War when you plan to carry on alone.
@mnxs
@mnxs Год назад
@@TuntematonX that's so cool. And it may be common knowledge among the Finns, but to us outsiders (even fellow Scandinavians such as myself), it is not. So thank you for that writeup, it's very interesting. A thought on the value of the double-blind supply depots/bunkers: it also has an attritional value. If the Russians need to hit them all to ensure disruptions of, say, military hardware like artillery shells, they will also waste a bunch on hitting stocks of baby food and whatnot. That's causes problems for the civilian populace, absolutely, but it doesn't hinder the military defence effort except their own in depleting their stocks of advanced, precision munitions.

I don't remember the name of the village that I would be evacuated, but I remember reading it somewhere. There is also a plan for organizations in all key areas (finance, social security, etc) so they can keep on functioning. These organizations must name some key persons that would be in charge of things. They all get special training. If there is a crisis they will be evacuated in a secret location. And many CEOs and directors participate in a special defence training so that everything runs smoothly in times of crisis.

For many decades it was a "forbidden subject", not even supposed to be talked about. But the idea has allways been floating around. But to go to war over it... No. Well, take a million people and there are bound to be a number of crazy individuals out there, but hardly anyone with half a brain would actually be willing to start a war. To make demands, is another thing. But on the other hand, for Russia to do anything but simply ignore demands that do not include a threat of war, is unlikely. In other words, there has been, and probably will be discussion about getting back the lost territories, but not very serious.

Some things of note here! 1. While we do have conscription for males aged 18-27(?), we also have what we call "civil service", which prepares one to become a civil servant during wartime, as services like schools, libraries, nursing homes, etc still have to manage under war time conditions. This is a type of service many whom don't enjoy the military service take. 2. While the demographic to be conscripted either into military or civil service are male (obvs including trans men btw), the public discourse over the last couple of years has been about making conscription gender neutral, meaning regardless of one's gender, they'd still get conscripted. 3. Those who do not serve the state on religious or ideological grounds are given a prison sentence. The severity of the sentence can range from a tracking collar on your ankle to actual time in prison, depending if you have any prior stuff on your criminal record. 4. The nuclear shelters around the country vary A GREAT DEAL when it comes to quality and maintenance. The images you see here are from downtown Helsinki, in which, these places are kept well and such. But should you go to "poorer areas" like Helsinki suburbs, the shelters there are ill-equipped to handle any biological or radioactive threats, as the filtration systems on those have not seen maintenance since the 1980's. Some of these spaces have been a dumping ground for different municipal services for their hardware and getting all that out of those spaces takes way more time than the advertised 72h.
