Why Flush a Diesel Engine

It is quite an easy DIY process to flush a diesel engine, and is as simple as completing an oil change. By following this easy process you will safely remove unwanted sludge and built up carbon, leaving the crankcase “as new” clean.
When it's time to flush a diesel engine with CEM’s Flushing Oil Concentrate, in almost all cases, it will result in an increase in compression, due to dissolving, dispersing and removing carbon around piston ring grooves. This clearly demonstrates the value of a quality engine flush.

I used this product on my HDJ79R with 340000Km, I ensured the engine oil was at normal running temperature, drooped the old oil out and replaced the oil for the flush process with some New Penrite oil at the same time I installed a GenuineToyota oil filter to ensure it had the capacity to catch what ever was heading its way, ran the engine for 45 min @1500RPM, dropped the revs down to idle for 5 minutes, changed out engine oil for a 2nd time, oil was dirty as anticipated and installed another new Toyota Oil filter, its done over 1200km now and the oil has a very mild tinge to the oil, thinking I will do it again in 12 months time. So far happy with the Product.

So basically, flushing this way, cleans up all the gunk the oil leaves behind in the piping. When pouring the new oil in it will have a fully clean environment right?

Yes all old oil will be safely dissolved and removed ..

But isn’t diesel oil always black ?
@jochenstacker7448
@jochenstacker7448 5 лет назад
It's a diesel engine. Oil in them is black. You can flush it as much as you want, the new oil will be just as black in half an hour. Having said that, a flush can be a good idea in engines that have been neglected, I've flushed my own engine and I can tell you that diesels hate being driven short distances by timid drivers. 😀

Wrong. I used it and many others and since using it my oil changes stay golden brown for 3000-4000km before starting to lose colour.

@@Nick-sd7um if that's the case your diesel engine isn't running properly, if it's running properly your oil should start to turn black within a few 100kms

I have a small, 2 cylinder yanmar, 16hp from 1986. I want to give her a happy home. I'm trying to learn everything I can. I'm pretty sure it's been well-maintained. Is flushing worth it? Above and beyond oil changes worth it? Filter changes? Standard gas station additives worth it?
@costeffectivemaintenance4614
@costeffectivemaintenance4614 2 года назад
Honestly most additives from the Gas Station are not worth wasting your money on .. Is it runing well ? Using any oil or blowing any smoke ? Those little Yanma's are a pretty good little engine.

I got a zd30 that has EGR plate. Oil after 20000 ks , yes twenty thousand, is not black. Actually can still see thru it. I flush it with nulon and right to go for another 12 months. Replaced valve cover gasket recently and it is pristine inside. 290k and still doesn't miss a beat. Oil doesn't have to black if it's not a Toyota. I be shown my oil to cruiser owners and they tell me oil looks like I changed it yesterday!

Bloody hell jimmy that oil was as black as a oil painting I done of a crocodile back in 1963 obviously I had to wrestle the croc in the water first...good job of the engine runs sweet as a pear mate. God bless

Hey mate; Used your flush on my 2012 Subaru wrx and used a 5w40 cheap oil along with the flush for 35 mins. Was using 10w50 before, too thick since I don’t track it just street.. Came out not black but a dark greenish / gunk colour. Put 10w40 back in and let me tell you; cars running a bit smoother, quieter and tad more performance. WRX was using 1 litre a fortnight prior to the flush, now it’s slowed down drastically but not completely since I’m leaking from my rock cover gasket. But this shit works reducing blowby, cleaning the engine out and restoring factory performance. Super happy boys thanks again👍👍

Thanks for the video it was very helpful. Last year I bought a Mazda diesel car from Milcar Mazda and oil was very black but they said they have done full service and all diesel engines oil become black very quick. Then two months ago I took it to DAS Automotives in west Hendon for full service and they said they will do a flush and oil and filter change, however, after taking the car back, I checked the oil in front of them and saw the same black oil on the dipstick but they said thats ok, all diesel cars are like that. Last week my Mazda 6 2016 auto 50k broke down and DAS Automotives hendon said it's the turbo and they need £1500 and Milcar Mazda says that the oil pump chain might be broken or the engine needs to be changed so it might cost £1200 to £6000. Two complete different diagnosis and I had to pay for their incorrect diagnosis too. Now I know none of them has changed the oil and that lead to this problem.

Take them to small claims court. You should be able to see that the oil is clear when it is first changed.

Thanks for the video - never seen it done this way but certainly makes a lot of sense. I have a 2014 VW Passat Alltrack diesel with 210k kms on it. Only put about 30k on the odo since ownership and it runs pretty well but has had some lengthy gaps in service history. I like the idea of placing the flush in with clean oil but i'm nervous putting any old cheapie oil in to rinse the flush through as VW are very specific on the oil to use in the engine i.e VW004/007 type. I'd prefer not to have shell out the extra $$ on the correct oil and just go a cheap semi synthetic for the rinse but don't want to damage the motor. What oil do you recommend to use for the engine rinse/flush process - semi synthetic ok just get a similar weight? Or should I just use the correct oil for the rinse? Cheers!

Thanks for the video. You put 4 litre of new cheapy oil, add the engin cleaner( the whole bottle) and let the it run for 45 minutes. You replace the oil and oil filter. Is that how you did? Thanks again
@costeffectivemaintenance4614
@costeffectivemaintenance4614 3 года назад
Yes, to get the best results . Add new oil to the engine (leave the old filter on) Add 12.5 ml per liter of engine oil .. (we added about 80 ml in total) Run vehicle at a high idle for 45 min Then drain the dirty oil, replace filter, refill with oil. costeffective.com.au/product/flushing-oil-concentrate/ Cheers CEM

Why do you not use the flushing additive with the original oil? Then afterwards use some cheap oil to remove any residue by a short run, 1-2 hundred miles. Then put the good oil in, changing the filter.
@costeffectivemaintenance4614
@costeffectivemaintenance4614 3 года назад
We recommend using clean oil especially if the engine has high mileage, unknown history or an oil sludge buildup. The clean oil helps circulate the flush around, successfully breaking down and dissolving all built up oil sludge. When it comes time to do your next oil change you can add the flush in with the old oil about a day or so before changing the oil.

@@costeffectivemaintenance4614 Hi, for my 2007 Mitsubishi Triton with 227,000kms currently, I have been doing engine flush for my every oil change starting from 150,000kms till now. The engine flush was added into the old oil, ran on idle for 15min, poured out, fill in the new diesel semi-synthetic oil, and that's it until my next 7,000kms oil change. Then repeat the same process as above for the next due. QUESTION: Is this over doing it with the engine flush? Please advise.

Hi Ryan, Good to hear that you looking after the Triton. What you doing is fine, the only thing you could do differently is to drive the Ute for 15 - 30 Mins instead of letting it idle... Feel free to give us a call if needed . Cheers Jimmy

This seems straight forward enough for me. My mechanic is quoting me $300 for an engine flush on my Prado, for 90000km. Is this reasonable? I’m in Melbourne Australia

HI Kat, flushing out an engine is a relatively easy process. We have flushed out hundreds of Prados over the years with great results. If you want we can give you call and run you through the process. If you have an oil sludge / oil pickup problem the engine flush will safely clean that engine up. Cheers Cost Effective Maintenance

Yes, no worries running at the same time

I purchase this stuff for my 6.5 L Diesel engine with a 8 liter oil capacity. I accidentally pour more than half of the FTC 250 ml container. Do you think I can ruin the engine if continue the process with this amount of FTC stuff?

If you are going to flush with cheap oil you should use the same weight though?
@costeffectivemaintenance4614
@costeffectivemaintenance4614 2 года назад
Beacuse the engine is only reving at a high idle, you can use a different weight oil. The engine will not be under any load thus less stress. We use clean oil to help circulate the Flushing Concentrate around the engeine. Cheers

Can I just drive to town and back whilst the flush is in the engine instead of idling for 40 minutes, or does higher revs cause damage whilst flushing?

My understanding is that longer intervals between oil changes will contribute to sludge and thus when the oil is changed then more likely to go black sooner. The opposite is also the case. So if a diesel engine has had a good history of short intervals then the oil will be less black generally. Another consideration isthe oil used. Every oil has different cleaning additives. Less cleaners could mean less black? There are also many other reasons the oil could go black sooner like engine running temps, EGT, lots of short trips and so on. Mr cost effective maintenance, what I would like to know is 1. When would you suggest a flush is done? 2. What potential side effects are there? 3. Can the fush be just added to the 5000km old oil rather than new oil?
@costeffectivemaintenance4614
@costeffectivemaintenance4614 2 года назад
Red Rocket Thanks for the comments. Yes, there are many factors at play with engine oil turning black. Before flushing an engine its best practice to know what type of flush you are using, as there can be sever consequences in a solvent flush is used. The Flushing Oil Concentrate is a concentrated detergent bases formula, and once the engine is up to temperature the flush will actively dissolve all built up sludge and carbon from the oil wetted side of the engine. To answer your questions 1 An engine flush can be done at any time , on any diesel or petrol engine. Flush can be used to remove sludge / stuck rings from a high mileage engine It can be used on a new vehicle before each oil change to prevent oiled oil from building up Or on a regular vehicle as routine maintenance. 2: Potential side effects are very limited Being a detergent-based flush, it is a very safe way of flushing an engine. Hard built-up deposits are easily dissolved avoiding potential oil blockages If a vehicle has been badly maintained and there are mechanical issues present IE Broken rings / perished seals these faults will not be fixed by flushing an engine. 3. For a badly sludge engine we do recommend adding the flush to NEW engine oil to assist the cleaning process If at 5000Km the engine oil is somewhat clean translucent ( does not stain fingers) the Flush can be added. Hope this help Feel free to contact us directly with you vehicle details if you need any further assistance. Cheers JImmy
