Alot of people likely don't think about this but I was an avid fly angler prior to my motorcycle accident and often did so in a kayak from a sitting position, the practice I got there and the proper technique of letting the rod do the work has absolutely carried over to now days casting a fly in a wheelchair due to a spinal cord injury. Friends of mine often struggle to out cast me because they refuse to learn proper technique for casting and attempt to "muscle" the fly in there. They are often the ones worn out earlier in the day as well! Lol great video as always and keep up the great content!

I’ve been wanting to get started in fly fishing for a few years now. One of my coworkers has offered to give me a new fly rod and reel that he purchased and never used, so it must be a sign. Over the past few days I’ve been watching a lot of your tutorials and can’t wait for warm weather. Unfortunately I live in Indy and there aren’t many tackle shops around the area that carry fly fishing gear that I know of and Columbus Ohio is a long way from Indianapolis. Thanks for uploading these videos they’ve been a huge help.

Brian, incredible series culminating in the rod to knee drill. I wish I had known this from lesson one, haha. I've been badly casting (tearing my underwear) for 12 years on salt and couldn't figure out what was wrong. I think you've really helped me with this one. You cast like Flip and it's just so cool to be able to learn from him through you. I would like to see the series continue with dealing with our old four letter word (air movement) and how to fish with a side arm cast to help deal with it and keep the line more out of sight of the fish. I've heard this is how the guides fish for tarpon in Key West and won't invite you back if you can't cast. I can 't deal with that kind of rejection...Please help me with those prima donnas.

After watching this video, I couldn't wait to practice the double haul on my 4 wt, (rod, reel and line all purchased at MRO by the way.). Rewatched the video and pulled out the Rio line box to confirm the taper and body (the line is single color orange.). I got out the tape measure and marked the beginning of the running line with a black permanent marker. Bingo! The double haul worked as never before. Great video! I try to buy all my gear at MRO.

So if my fly line is all one single color, do I just have to know where the running line begins based on the specs written on the packaging for the fly line? I think the line I'm using starts the running line after about 26 feet. I suppose I could also just run the line through my fingers to feel where it gets thinner... or maybe I'm dead wrong on that theory? Thanks for the super helpful videos!

Love all your casting tips but I have to say when I head up to Montana to fish the Madison I just about always have trees and brush behind me in the stretches I like to fish. I have to make some very upright backcasts to keep from getting hung up so my distance really suffers. I'd like to get my flies a little further into the current seams but without wading up to my chest it's very tricky. Is there a technique I could use to get a bit more distance and accuracy when my backcast is hampered. Maybe you could do a video where you have limited backcast room and a dropoff from the bank to the water. Thanks for all your great tips.

Take a black sharpie and color a 3-6" black section where the thick part tapers to the thin running line. You can't go to big with this mark. It will fade and rub off over time but carry a sharpie with you. I carry one on the river to darken a fly at times as a bonus. In fact, on another topic, you can carry white flies and a few. colored markers and make any colored fly you like...
