Why FNaF 3 Is the Best in the Franchise

While many consider Five Nights at Freddy's 3 to be the worst game in the series, it's always been my favorite. I've wanted to make this video for a while now, but I finally got the motivation to sit down and do it. I hope that I was able to give some appreciation to this very underrated game.
All music and gameplay shown and discussed in this video is property of Scott Cawthon. If this video interested you, I highly recommend playing this, and the rest of the FNaF series to show some appreciation for what went into them.

A part of Springtrap's design concept that often goes overlooked: like the other antagonists, he is a possessed and hostile animatronic, but where the others are possessed in a very detached/ghostly sense, Springtrap is more akin to a zombie. He's the first example of body horror in the series, reserved to juxtapose him with his victims.
@nadie887

even though he's dead body is almost completely disconnected from his soul, the way it remains inside him it's a very artistic way to explain his character and backstory, giving a sense of mystery to the ones that don't know him

One of the creepiest/coolest details about this game that I never really see mentioned anywhere has to do with the audio lures. The reason that they work is because the Spring Bonnie animatronic is built to follow the sounds of children. Since the suit is in animatronic mode while Purple Guy is inside, every time we use an audio lure his robot body is literally being pulled in another direction while he tries desperately to regain control and advance toward us.

Something I really love about this game is how human and intelligent Springtrap seems to the player. He immediately uses distractions like the phantoms and audio errors. He will go back to previous rooms on his own to try and fake you out, and to use vents that had been previously blocked. Probably the best example is how he hides himself in the cameras, often you can only see his hand, or his foot, or just the side of his smiling face. It gives me a really chilling feeling when I stare at a camera trying to find him, only to get a glimpse of his face, realizing he had been staring at me the whole time.

This is an easy and hands-free approach that the animatronics stay where the children are for maximum entertainment/crowd-pleasing value [...]" Since the Balloon Boy "Hello" is the only different sound playing in the entire building, the Spring Bonnie heads towards it, even if William Afton doesn't. That's why it doesn't work anymore when he's near your office, there's new sound stimuli and thus he doesn't work when he's behind the glass.

Connection terminated. I'm sorry to interrupt you Elizabeth, if you still even remember that name. But I'm afraid you've been misinformed. You are not here to receive a gift, nor have you been called here by the individual you assume. Although you have indeed been called. You have all been called here. Into a labyrinth of sounds and smells, misdirection and misfortune. A labyrinth with no exit, a maze with no prize. You don't even realize that you are trapped. Your lust for blood has driven you in endless circles, chasing the cries of children in some unseen chamber, always seeming so near, yet somehow out of reach. But you will never find them, none of you will. This is where your story ends. And to you, my brave volunteer, who somehow found this job listing not intended for you. Although there was a way out planned for you, I have a feeling that's not what you want. I have a feeling that you are right where you want to be. I am remaining as well, I am nearby. This place will not be remembered, and the memory of everything that started this can finally begin to fade away. As the agony of every tragedy should. And to you monsters trapped in the corridors: Be still and give up your spirits, they don't belong to you. For most of you, I believe there is peace and perhaps more waiting for you after the smoke clears. Although, for one of you, the darkest pit of Hell has opened to swallow you whole, so don't keep the devil waiting, old friend. My daughter, if you can hear me, I knew you would return as well. It's in your nature to protect the innocent. I'm sorry that on that day, the day you were shut out and left to die, no one was there to lift you up into their arms the way you lifted others into yours. And then, what became of you. I should have known you wouldn't be content to disappear, not my daughter. I couldn't save you then, so let me save you now. It's time to rest. For you, and for those you have carried in your arms. This ends for all of us. End communication.

Fnaf 3 and fnaf 6 are both perfect endings to their own "trilogies", that being fnaf 1-3 and fnaf 4-6. 4-6 was really a new era altogether of fnaf, almost more like a spinoff or inspired work rather than sequels to fnaf 1-3. It was a controversial decision at the time but it paid off in the end imo. Help wanted and security breach did the same formula of branching off after 3 games. Following that pattern, I wonder what the third game in the 7-9 trilogy will be and if it will be as satsifying as 3 and 6 were

I think the greatest part of fnaf 3 is that, instead of looking after four semi-dangerous entities, you're facing one VERY dangerous entity. It's like you're dueling with someone who is always one step away from killing you. And the shear PANIC of when one of the phantoms makes you lose track of your *one true threat* is unspeakably perfect for the game.

The reason for that is probably because there is an open door on the left, and a vent that can’t close right at the opening on the right. Your only defense are the scattered vent doors around the place, and the audio lures. If he gets to the door, you can’t look away to activate a lure, and if he gets to the vent your just dead. Nothing you can do. Not to mention that (pretty much) your main line of defense can break after 2 uses. (night 5/6)

Being honest, who else is there to like in this game? The story is centered around springtrap so of course he is going to be the most interesting character. No one normal goes, "Damn, I love rockstar freddy's backstory." because he has none. Half of the characters in this entire SERIES are bland robots and dead kids that want to kill a 40 year old. You may say that the puppet or someone has an interesting story, but SHE DOESN'T. Sure she died outside of a restaurant, so interesting. Glad Scott is changing it up because instead of dying inside the restaurant, she died on the ouside, everyone cheer! Springtrap is the only character we see even a glimpse into the story of because he is the antagonist.

He was surrounded with ghost children and panicked, so he went into the suit in which he felt he was his most powerful self (which is reasonable), but he laughed at them from inside the suit - the springlock suit - a suit which has been stated clearly many times that the within springs are fragile and incredibly sharp and will spring out of place with any sudden or straining movements, which he surely knows from instructions of how to safely put it on - and the springs popped and did a heckin shank, lmao The kids didn't kill him, they just spooked him and he did a dumb. Honestly, this may be my favorite detail of the whole FNaF series; Afton died because he laughed in a shank-suit.

The Night 4 & 5 phone calls foreshadowed his fate, since the phone guy explained to not wear the animatronic suit in moist climate. I think it was a combination of that. Knowing the springlocks’ design, their flaws also cause them to fail when exposed to a moisture. With what seems to be rain leaking into the establishment, that was what caused the springlocks to fail and turn Afton into the freakshow he is now.

The thing I love most about the first three Fnaf games, they’re all over complicated versions of Hide and Seek. However there’s one thing separating Fnaf 3 from 1 and 2. Fnaf 1 and 2: You’re looking for the animatronics, constantly on guard but prepared nonetheless, with defenses on standby for their appearance. Your only companion is a phone call once every night. All game tactics for modes 4/20 or 10/20 aside in these games, it’s basically you searching for people hiding. *You* are the seeker, the one looking to find and stop your prey. You’re fighting ghosts. Fnaf 3: That’s not the case here. You have no defenses, you have no guard. You are completely, and utterly alone. The only potential companion you have is the endlessly droning voice of a guy who is long since dead. Anyone else is either a ghost of the past, or something far, *far* worse. You’re not the seeker any longer. You may be looking around, but no longer to prepare a defense, to spring a trap. Now it’s simply an attempt to, what amounts to, delaying the inevitable. The Thing of your Nightmares only hides from view because he knows where the cameras are, he knows where *you* are. Every threat of the past has been predictable, not this time. At the end of the night, between you and him, who is it that wants to hide? And who is it that *needs* to?

In Dawko’s interview with him, Scott explains why he kept making the games all the way to 6, actually. Basically, FNAF 3 was supposed to be the end, but a lot of people were disappointed with it, and Scott wanted to have the series end on a high note, so he made 4. After 4 released, however, people get hung up on “The Box”, and since that made Scott feel like he was ending the series on a cliffhanger, he decided to make SL. Once that game released (and had its Custom Night update finished), he made FFPS to tie up all the loose ends made in SL and to end the series cohesively again. And after all that was done, he made UCN to celebrate the franchise, as well as give FFPS a little epilogue. As for HW and SB, that seems to just be Steel Wool deciding to add a plot to their VR game, and Scott backing them up once they run it by him, although I don’t know for sure. He never explains the reason why HW’s story was made in the interview, mainly because the interview was made before that game was finished.

the biggest upgrade of fnaf 3 to me compared to the previous 2 games, is that the gameplay makes you actually use all the cameras instead of just one even in later nights. In fnaf 1 and 2 it starts to turn into more of strategy than horror when you only look at the pirate cove camera for example, or the prize corner camera, on night 4/5 and up.

The gameplay aside, no one can deny how savory and important the lore of this game is/was. The days building up to the release, all we knew about Springtrap was his name and appearance. Everyone was trying to figure out just what exactly he was and where he fit into the story. Was he a long forgotten 6th member of the Fazbear crew? Was he a prototype for Bonnie? Of all the theories we came up with, I don't think a single person was expecting him to actually be the most mysterious and important character known at the time, Purple Guy. Like, what a twist that was?? This awful zombie rabbit bent on killing you is the little purple sprite we've been scrambling to figure out who he is. While FNAF 3's gameplay is not among my favorites, I'd be lying if I said FNAF 3 isn't one of the most important games in the series.

"... it was dragged out for the sake of continuing the franchise." Actually, Scott himself has stated that he made FNaF 4 because he wasn't satisfied with the ending he made in 3. Then he felt like 4 wasn't a proper conclusion either, so he planned out Sister Location and Pizzeria Simulator to be a better conclusion followed by a bit of an epilogue in Ultimate Custom Night. This wraps up what's known as the Afton Saga. Help Wanted started basically a new story for the franchise, which is the one we're looking at in the games that followed it. It wasn't completely about the money that's why he made 4, SL, PS, and UCN, but about Scott thinking he could've done better and trying to do so. Nowadays, development on further games in the franchise is up to Steel Wool Games and Scott has retired from the franchise, but he'll probably start a new game series in the future and I look forward to seeing what he makes next.

The thing I like about FNAF 3 is the gameplay itself. Instead of waiting for the animatronic to reach your room before closing the door, you have no doors, no protection, nothing. My big issue with Fnaf 3 is just the fact that there is only Springtrap. Yeah, there are the Phantoms, but I feel like they just ruin a big part of the game: tension. These games are not scary; they are suspenseful. Tension is built up by seeing the animatronics moving on the cameras, and tension is released through a jump scare, or reaching 6 am. If there are a ton of jumpscares every night, then the one that actually kills your has less of an effect. Not to mention that Springtrap’s jumpscare is one of the worst in the series; he literally just walks up to you.

I think what matters is the adrenaline you get by just... sitting around and playing their cat and mouse game, use the doors strategically while also saving energy, putting a mask on and using a flashlight, using audios strategically to get your predator out of you, or closing the door of your room because you heard breathing and you can't even turn your flashlight on without dying. The ambient music of FNAF 3, to me at least, has this really sad yet nostalgic vibe to it. It really captures the feeling of you being stuck in this old, rotten building plagued by memories of murders and tragedy at the hands of a psychopath. The box of dismantled toy animatronic parts, the puppet on the wall, the creepy drawings made by children, all of it perfectly complements the atmosphere. The ambience also really helps demonstrate the irony of Springtrap's demise. He's the man who caused all of it and is now facing the consequences, stuck in the same position he put his victims in, wandering aimlessly around old hallways with no way out in sight. And to think, this would have been the last FNAF game.

Mostly agree. I still find Fnaf 1 scarier and honestly better, but I never understood why people think fnaf 2 is so much better, the gameplay is more fun but the horror is practically non-existent and using the cameras which is the most original mechanic of the series will basically kill you while in 3 they're the most important thing. About the story, I think the 3 first games were an almost perfect story for this format, the first one settles a lot of mysteries, the second one gives more context and even more mysteries and the third one solves a lot of stuff, gives closure and leaves some mysteries alive but allowing you to piece together a pretty satisfying story. But then fourth one came out and while I think the gameplay was better than 2 and 3 the story felt pointless as an ending and ambiguos for the sake of it, Why do you think Scott didn't see anyone solve it completely? Then Sister location and ffps tried to answer the questions and give closure again but they undid the ending of fnaf 3 and made the story way too convoluted to be satisfying at least for me. I honestly would have preferred if Scott left the series with the third one and leave as a great story and move on to something else just as original and scary. You either die as a good story or live long enough to become unnecessary.

I absolutely loved this game, and the way you worded how it feels when we’re up against springtrap, it was something along the lines of, “before, we were against the victims, who are just letting their anger out on us. But now we are against the cause,” god, that is so fucking cool.

The other animatronics arent alive enough, but springtrap radiates too much expression, he's just TOO alive. He looks like something that's thinking, breathing, plotting his way towards you. And thats why he is terrifying.

I always disagreed with the people that said the jumpscares weren’t scary because of how you have to turn your head to get jump scared or move either of the monitors away which makes you anxious of what may be right in front of you as well as the oxygen issues making your vision blurry which made the jumpscares in my opinion really impactful.

I personally feel like FNAF 3 is somewhat of an end, and end for those children's suffering and allowing them to be free and rest in peace. But Willaim (purple guy) was and still bloodthirsty, he is a horrible person who causes suffering everywhere he goes. To me, this game was the end of act 1 and continued the story of William not letting go, as well him following the same steps he had done to those kids

I've actually planning a horror game inspired by FNaF 3 where you play as a maintenance worker for a horror attraction with The Sinful (based on Springtrap mainly Battington's version of him) and others hunting you down while doing your tasks and finally escaping. The other characters are The Lost (based on The Puppet from FNaF 2) and The Doll (based on Lost Doll from Gregory Horror Show.) I'm still trying to think of the name of the game, but I'm hoping too actually manage to make the game. Also, Pastra continue what you're doing your one of my favorite horror youtubers 😊

I love Springtrap. I love him as a character, and I fully agree with everything said in this video. I think he's been meme-ified in recent years and his inclusion in Security Breach does seem a little forced... but you can't beat his first introduction; the fear and terror we felt at hearing something moving in the vents... Even with his recent incarnations; I still love Springtrap as a character; and feel that both Scraptrap and Burntrap (while Burntrap does have a killer model) are pale imitations of the original.

A lot of people don't like Springtrap's jumpscare for how underwhelming it is. What i think people don't take into consideration is that he's literally a corpse in a suit. Corpses (if you didn't already know) don't move around a lot, so Springtrap is going to move in a much more fatigued manner. All the other animatronics exaggerate their jumpscare because they're capable of doing so, while Springtrap is not. In conclusion, spring boy is underwhelming because corpses don't move like animatronics do.

my favourite parts are the atmosphere and the use of colour. the atmosphere because it feels real to me. the use of colour because springtrap blends into the setting so well so you have to put your face right up to the screen to see him, setting you up for a jumpscare by a phantom animatronic.

@@ThiccFurryBoi34 I feel like Springtrap jumpscare being so slow and kinda bad is due to the man being springlocked and having not walked in a good while, thus he can't do a running jumpscare (like Foxy) nor a jumping one (like Puppet) or any other (like everyone else) and just walks up to you. Also Phantom Balloon Boy is cool.

Frankly, the only issue with FNAF3 is that FNAF2 set up expectations of "Big Challenges" that are super skill based, and FNAF3 isn't as good of an atmosphere for horror as FNAF1 or FNAF4, and that its jumpscares just stop having meaning quickly. Mostly that last bit ruins it for people. JUmpscares are spammed in a way that makes them not a threat, and Springtrap's jumpscare isn't even scary or sudden, but its the only one that can kill? I think Springtrap is the best animatronic ever made before Nightmare and Nightmare Fredbear. Both are complex animatronics who pose a menace and threat unlike any other, but are also very memorable. Yet I think Springtrap is a better concept and exposure than even Fredbear and Nightmare, because Springtrap really felt like a bossfight as you said more than even those two. Only one other thing in the franchise felt like a Boss, Ennard. And Ennard wasn't anywhere near as much a menace as Springtrap but was still very important and has its own taste. I believe though Pizzaria Simulator is the #1 game in the franchise, FNAF2 being the worst(of the First Era[aka FNAF1-UCN{Ultimate Custom Night}]) and FNAF2 ain't even a bad game. I do however agree FNAF3 is super underrated, but I get why the people dislike it.

honestly i never understood why 3 was so hated, it did so many things that the franchise had never tried up to that point and it did them amazingly well. people probably felt that only having one antagonist was boring, and didn’t take the time to really appreciate the villain we’d been given for this game. while i love all the games that came after 3 just as much (if not more), i agree that 3 would have been a fitting conclusion to the story - the children finally resting in peace after having gotten revenge on their killer, and purple guy himself getting a taste of his own medicine in becoming springtrap, living every day in constant pain just like they had to. although i have to say that even though this game would have made a beautiful conclusion if the curtains had been called here, i’m kind of glad that the series continued. it brought us a ton of interesting new characters, intricate lore, and most importantly, fleshed out purple guy as a character. instead of leaving him as a blank slate outside of being pure evil, they built him his own background - a book-smart businessman with a family of his own and all the power he needed over the fazbear entertainment company to get away with all the horrible things he did. they even decided to go all in on the springtrap thing and show off his real power, that being his ability to _always come back_ no matter how many times he perishes through a combination of supernatural influence and his own sheer force of will. easily one of my favourite video game villains, hands down. some people hate where the franchise went after 3 or 4, especially when 4 was supposed to be “the final chapter”, and that’s a valid opinion, but i’ll always love this series as a whole, headache-inducing lore and infinite sequels be damned.

The bad ending is still one of things of the franchise that sticks to me to this day… it’s this bizzare creepy atmosphere with the heads lit up in a black background and one of the songs from my childhood playing in the background from a creepy cranking distorted music box. The meaning is never clear but it’s very speculated that it’s the meaning of the children not being free in this “true” ending (as is theorized) I still see those lit up heads in my dreams every now and then it is something that I continue to remember about fnaf as well as the fourth game’s story, Afton’s death, Elizabeth’s death and so forth. But this bad ending was strangely impactful for me and the fact that the game was the first in the franchise with different endings at the time.
