The release of Shadow Of The Erdtree's gameplay trailer made me reflect on what made me love FromSoftware games, what made Elden Ring so special, and the surprising element of SotE that I'm probably most excited about.

4:38 - My first FromSoftware "secret"
7:55 - Why I love the Souls games

Sorry for the uncharacteristically sensible video. I had a lot I wanted to say after the trailer. I might make a couple more about specific elements of the DLC between now and June (This video was originally going to be Chapter 1 in a much longer video, before I realised the DLC would probably be out by the time I finished it). Normal service resumes next week with killing Mohg And Radahn as early and fast possible. If, for some reason, you wanted to kill those two specific bosses quickly... Hope you enjoy the vid!

My first Caelid experience was indeed going through the trap. And then running around looking for a grace I somehow aggro’ed one of the huge birds and it CHASED ME DOWN AND CAUGHT ME on Torrent, which was traumatic, because I thought at that point Torrent was the fastest thing around. Didn’t go back to Caelid on that first run until I was over level 100, LOL

I totally get it. On my first playthrough of Elden Ring, I was exploring Stormveil Castle and found the hidden route and discovered Liurnia of the Lakes. My heart wouldn't stop beating incredibly fast. Did I find something I wasn't supposed to? I texted a friend who has beaten every Soulsbourne game including Elden Ring and asked him if I found a secret path or something? He told me "oh you found the path that let's you skip the first boss, cool and no it's not a secret". It was a very memorable moment for me. Thanks for this video, it was very touching.

"...a snippet of one track and it's been in my head on repeat for ten days." This really encapsulates so much of why FromSoft games are SO GOOD. Everything from the music, the bosses, the landscape is all given so much attention. And the DLCs always seem to take all of that to another level.

What an eloquent video. You've put it so beautifully and compellingly. I played BB, DSR, DS3 and Sekiro before playing Elden Ring, so I'm familiar with From's ability to make you feel like you've found a secret. But each discovery I made in playing Elden Ring still felt like I found something no one has ever found before, and that no one was supposed to. Incredulous, I found it hard to believe that lots of people found Lichdragon Fortissax and Astel. Finding them felt so involved and happenstance, so accidental. But of course lots of people found them because From has been subtly nudging most of us to find them, but in a way that made the journey feel so personal. From are masters of this emotion, an experience video games can do in ways other forms of art cannot match. And I'm excited for the next journey they have prepared for us who are blessed to live in the same time as Hidetaka Miyazaki.

You hit the nail on the head for me, about the level design still feeling like a Soulsborne title in the open world. The more I played the game, the more I came to appreciate the various ways you can traverse the Lands Between, the shortcuts and cliffaces. Every square inch tells a small story about the larger world. I love Elden Ring -it's my favorite FS game
@fallengarden
@fallengarden 3 месяца назад
It took me 2700 hours to come up with my own Elden Ring build. It's way more than what I had to spend in other SoulsBorne games to achieve the same result, even tho I played a lot more DS 3 and Bloodborne in total. This game is truly RPG to it's core. You can bend every single aspect to your own liking, to your own style. This is where this title shines the most, alongside the journey and first time exploration. Still, my fav From game is Bloodborne and it isn't close. Most of Elden Ring's magic fades away after the first playthrough. The Open World, It's greatest weapon, becomes it's no 1. weakness the moment you know where everything is.
@flamingmanure
@flamingmanure 2 месяца назад
"Most of Elden Ring's magic fades away after the first playthrough." applies just as much if not more to bloodborne and all the other games really, i would say bloodborne suffers from this issue more than elden ring by a large margin. the games greatest strength are the weapons in bb, and yet they are laughably balanced, most weapons are straight up bad compared to the top 5 ( unless u chalice grind, and i would rather punch a knife than that since the chalices are the worst lowest quality content fromsoft ever made by far) and in a game all about "quality" weapons, this REALLY shouldnt be the case, and almost all weapons have one side of their transformation be much better than the other, theres a reason why 99% of bb playthroughs in youtube are filled with ppl just spamming R1 and rarely weapon switching, and the same goes for speed runners too, but they just spam R1 + L1 with beast pellets rather than just R1, frankly walking around the world with saw cleaver is downright laughable, u just walk up to 90% of the enemies and spam R1 till they die no consequences needed, bb is easily the most mindless and least strategic fromsoft game, seems like combat is bbs greatest strength and weakness too in a way. overall i wouldnt even call it the 4th best fromsoft game, but thats just me. there is some truth to what youre saying about elden rings open world, but tbh that first playthrough makes it worth it, and its nowhere near as bad as some souls vets convince themselves, i got to mountaintops in new game + in 3 hours, i got to godfrey on a fresh save only getting the things i want for my build in 10 hours, a tad longer than older games but not much. used to take me about 6 hours for bb or 7 for ds3. whether some ppl see elden rings open world as negative or positive is up for debate, but as far as im concerned, ERs first playthrough is better and more magical than bb, ds3 and sekiro combined. its the only fromsoft game i consider a true masterpiece in every since of the word.
@ever-changingbeing

@@flamingmanure The F are u talking about. Elden Ring becomes A 3-5 hour long game with a bunch of wasted space after its first playthrough. You know where everything is so you skip all of it that's boring and / or is not worth the effort to visit again cause you know what you're gonna find there. This is what 85-90% of the map becomes on your second playthrough. At least. This is a non existent problem in linear semi OW games like DS or BB is. It's boss design is questionable to say the least, with completely artificial, casual friendly difficulty. It's either you kill the boss in 30-50 seconds cause everything is OP af, or being killed by all of their hard hitting combos in seconds. Also a non existent problem in other From games. Even Sister Friede can't 1 shot you on a 27 VIG build dude. Being OP is a given, every proper weapon can 7-10 hit a boss even without any well thought optimization. By far the weakest FromSoft boss design, it's not even close to DS 3 and BloodBorne. Elden Ring is a one time experience and aside from the top notch exploration, pretty mid at that. Bloodborne is a game I can restart at any weekend and have a great time every time I do so. Without ever entering a Chalice. It's combat, bosses, level design, atmosphere are all vastly superior to ER. It's not even in the same league.

Above anything else for Shadow of the Erdtree, I'm so excited for that feeling of discovery, the uncertainty of where I'm going, the shock and awe of design and music. Even though I know where most things are now in the base game, I still like to look around and explore. It's fun to get lost and wander: something that appealed to me in open world games, but it never clicked until Elden Ring. Thank you for this video, Thingfishy!

Miyazaki is an unreal weaver of tales, having a degree in sociology probably helps a ton in knowing how your players will interact with the game world This game literally helped me grow as a human lol. The beauty of the world, the depravity of the beings within it, and the shimmering that appears in the form of seemingly kind characters and unsung moments that only occur if you are in the right place at the right time with the right item. Absolutely stunning level of interconnectivity throughout the game, both in level design and quest lines.

I was so terrified of Stormveil and the Grafted that I spent hours in Limgrave, Weeping, and Liurnia before attempting it, and ended up so OP I whooped his ass. Felt like a god! It didn't last 😂 still find it hard to look past the BHF, it did indeed carry me through my first run, very fond memories. Ive had a weaponfu in the large club since dark souls, every time I play a new one my first goal of my first playthrough is to explore aimlessly until I happen upon it, the great club, or some other bonky nonsense to hold me over for the magical moment I find it. The thing i love about souls games, is exactly what you said. Along with the games being based around presenting a player with difficulties, and giving them every tool available to overcome that obstacle. Elden ring is no exception due to its open world nature and how you can get late game items with only ever fighting 4 bosses. Miyazaki and FromSoft make the games and give them to us. But it is us the player who is in charge of how we progress and choose to play the game. There is no right or wrong way to play a souls game. The only truly “right” way to play a souls game, is how you the player chooses to play the game. That’s why you can go hundreds if not thousands of hours in a souls game and still discover something new. Because every thing you find/learn about the game is dictated by your choices playing the game. That to me is the beauty of a souls game. Where everything you find and learn or miss is by your own hand, not how the game or anyone else says you should experience these thing.

This videos explains perfectly why From Software is above every other developer by far. Ever since I played Pokemon as a kid, I wanted that child like sense of adventure back as an adult. I thought it was impossible to feel it again and that its exclusive to childhood. No game has managed to do that until I dicovered From Software in 2014. My first Souls game was actually Dark Souls 2 and only later I learned that DS2 was not well recieved by some Souls fans but to me it was special. The atmosphere, the music (Majula especially) and ofc the bosses were better than anything that Ive played up to this point. I wanted to know about the lore, the world. Everything. This feeling of curiosity was what Ive been craving for all those years. With Elden Ring I too was sceptical about the open world at first, especially because every recent open world game up to that point had so much hand holding and a map cluttered with markers etc. I just didnt like that and it felt repetitive. But when I saw the first footage of ER I was relieved and knew it would be the best open world ever created. Just by looking at all the details and possible locations to explore in the analysis videos. My hype was through the roof at that point. After release my expectations were even exceeded. Its almost like From Software knows exactly what I want in games and they hit the nail on the head every damn time. Even Armored Core 6, a mecha game (I usually dont like that genre), was a masterpiece and my personal GOTY 2023. They just dont miss.
@ThingfishyGaming
@ThingfishyGaming 2 месяца назад
Their games immediately changed my opinion on video games as a medium. Like you mentioned, the best compliment I could give FromSoftware from last year, is the fact i have 200+ hours in a mecha game ( I would have laughed if you'd told me that a couple of years ago). Thanks for posting, Elden, and thanks for watching!

So true. This games make you feel constanly like if everything you did was a unique experience that no else had Imagine the person that found Deeproot Depths by accidentally destroying the 2 secret walls below Leyndell and the sewers. The open world works perfectly for Fromsoft games

I loved this video! I am much the same, i can't believe the (no doubt incredible) bosses of the DLC are the thing i am looking forward the least, which is astonishing given that they were my main point of excitement before the game released! From really made something one of a kind with ER's open world. I kind of want to go into the DLC with very standard, weak equipment to try to recreate that early game Wretch "scrambling for items" experience that made ER's first half so special. I am so excited for Miyazaki's "return to more dense world design" because to me that sounds like they're going to try something like DS1's interconnectivity again, which has been my dream forever.

In retrospect, in my first playground I really wanted to get down to the second area of the underground you get access to after killing Radahn. I spent a lot of time trying to find an alternative access to it because I was scared to fight Radahn for some reason. I didn’t realize that you can just summon all the npcs and basically have them do all the work, if you really don’t want to fight him.

Haha, my version of this was Volcano Manor. Found a hidden wall through to a basement area with some slugs and a Bloodhound Knight. The Bloodhound dropped a weapon and that was it. Thought "bit weird to have this secret area just for a random Bloodhound knight" and left. Was only when I finished the game and was watching the first speedrun where I realised Volcano Manor was a thing.

That Miyazaki quote makes me hyped for Shadow of the Erdtree too. I hope they'll be able to capture some of the magic of the first chunk of Dark Souls 1. The opening quest of ringing the two bells is still one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time. Two or three hybrid dungeons that can capture the density and excitement of the best dungeons in the Soulsborne series would be unbelievable!

The first half of DS1 is something I don't think will ever be matched by any other game. I think even if they did it now it wouldn't be as special as we'd be expecting it. I remember fighting my way into the Valley of the Drakes as I'd decided "nope, I will do the entire rest of the game without weapon or flask upgrades rather than going up through blightown and the depths again". When I stepped off that elevator, heard the music and "Firelink Shrine" appeared... Abolutely exquisite. Thanks for watching!

My first experience of caelid was the chest, I found out that I couldn’t teleport away and I was effectively trapped in a place where I have no idea where it is. I finally get out and find sellia town of sorcery and got the lusats staff and then I did some more exploring and found the meteor staff then I killed the general in the lake of rot and used the staff I found on horseback to absolutely destroy the boss. It was an amazing feeling. I was trapped thinking I would have to make a new character but I overcame the obstacles and found the coolest staves in the game. The only other staff I ever used was the carian royal scepter and that’s because I loved turning into a moon. 😅

I contemplated a lot about, if I wanna write a comment on this and I've decided. I wanna share this little story of mine, as it is very fitting. So, when I was about 12 years old, I found a game in my older brothers room. It read Dark Souls. Since I've been interested in weird things as a child, such as horror, death, myths, cryptic sh*t and all the other stuff around that area, the title appealed to me and I saked my brother about it. Well, he showed it to me. And that was, when I discovered my 1st souls game and fell in love with it. I have since then played all of them, at least all that I could, because I only had an x-box back then and then moved on to PC. And yes, I am still coping for bloodborne PC. These games shaped a big part of who I am and who I'm going to be. All of the lessons I learned through them have allready helped out in real life and there is a reason to the saying "Don't you dare go hollow" existing in the souls community. There is a whole video here on yt, which explains this in detail and when I first watched it, it just felt so nostalgic and I was happy that so many people feel this way, about these games that I adore so much. And there was another feeling. The feeling of not being alone, with all the hardships. And now for one other thing. If you read this. Since I came across this channel, I find all of the feelings I feel, while playing fromsoftwares gems, in your videos. All of it from the feeling of getting lost from the beginning and finding some way, through the goosebumps when the boss theme starts playing, all the way to that reaccuring breath taking gasp, when you see the most painfully beautifull areas in any of these games. Thank you for making these videos and keep up the amazing work. Your channel is truly one of a kind! I could say so much more, but that feels a little too much, so I'm gonna leave it at that. Praise the sun!

I hope they dont change the leveling/rune system. Elden Ring was my first souls game, and yes i struggled. Doing limegrave and lirunia and leveling up before gonig to Caelid (And yes those big birds in Caelid genuinely freaked me out, it reminded me of an family guy episode when Brian was tripping out) was a massive plus in both getting alot out of the game and immensely enjoying it. I only bought this game in January and only now reached the Ash Capital. The leveling up system made me explore and get the most out of the areas. The first time i found the winged scythe i felt epic, spamming the L2 and kicking butt and then you get cocky and get wasted 😂😂. Great video as always and very excited to finishing my first run, running a second and downloading the adventure being Shadow of the Erdtree!

My first experience with Caelid was being slayn by Anastasia. I turned around - recognizing that I can go inside the church without having to deal with her, as I wanted to attack her from behind to get my runes back - and came back to Caelid trough the portal next to Marikas Church. And after being bullyed by a Gargoyle, I found myself in Sellias Tunnels Hut, after defeating the Dragon Agheel. I don´t have to say, I hated Caelid for a while. Now, its not love, but definitely not hate. Especially if I compare Caelid with the concegreted snowstormfield in the later game. ps.: Great video and good summary of why I fell in love with ER and am hyped as the next one by the SotE-Trailer.

Ahh another memory of my first play. For some reason I really really wanted to go talk to Iji. I spent such a long time trying to get across liurnia. Like where you run into that phantom wall in the ruins. After many hours I finally got to Iji! And he even has a lot of really good stuff to sell along with being a great character. The next step was Carian manor and I was way too scared to go near there. I didn’t realize that if you can just get to the boss of Carian manor, she’s really not that hard, and once you get through it opens up a lot more stuff.

I love that from never talks down to or underestimates the player. The big debate around the difficulty really boils down to the individual, and whether they have the temperament to keep trying until they figure it out. The most difficult battle for me in my first playthrough was maliketh. I was using bloodhounds fang and a shield and getting destroyed. So I started experimenting with other stuff, and eventually figured out to use freeze grease, because he's weak to it, along with bestial vitality to mitigate the hp drain, and went with a bleed setup with a dagger to proc it quickly. It was unconventional, but it worked lol. And the victory felt that much sweeter because I invested into it. When it came time to fight Malenia and Mohg, I used similar strats, and felt like I hadn't learned all that for only one fight.
@ThingfishyGaming
@ThingfishyGaming 2 месяца назад
Definitely! Maliketh was actually probably the boss that took me the most time time to learn. Actually one of the simplest bosses, but the pure panic he creates after a long beast fight is the secret to his difficulty. Thanks for posting, Tara. Was a fun read. Thanks for watching!

Back in 2020 I attempted my first Fromsoft game, Bloodborne. Didn’t know what the hell I was doing. And the challenge was beyond anything I had played before. I managed to reach the Cleric Beast and kept getting destroyed. I ended up removing the game from my system. But the game had left a major impression on me in terms of how no matter which way you chose, a different set of events would take place… and the enemy placement would be thoughtful and would tell a story….then Elden Ring came out… and I had seen video clips of these wild bosses from Dark Souls 3… which intrigued me.. and the promotional and gameplay videos of Elden Ring…so I bought it. And I was hooked from the tutorial. In my opinion, Sekiro is still the best Fromsoft game. I am returning to Elden Ring now and doing something I haven’t done in decades. I started a new game. New build. And it’s just great challenge. I’m much better at figuring out enemy patterns now after having played Sekiro. I also went back to Bloodborne after those games, and it was an awesome experience except for the “final” level Nightmare of Mensis. I’m playing Dragon’s Dogma 2…. I prefer how Fromsoft does it to be honest…but I think Dragon’s Dogma 2 will be fun as I move into the game… doesn’t hold a candle to Elden Ring though.
