I'd disagree about the idea of changing it asap because something seems imbalance. Coming from Fighting Games scene, historically, many times a character are deemed as OP and people demand they to be nerfed, 4 months later no one talked about that anymore because people discovered that the character actually isn't as broken as they thought, it's just the scene hasn't adapted and found the counter to the character yet but instead of labbing it they decided to post on twitter instead.

imo no series embodies this mindset better than halo. or rather the negative effects of trying to having everything be super balanced and be super viable in a competitive environment. the og games were super focused on FUN, dual wielding, hijacking, assasinations, some guns were pretty useless in a more competitive setting but they were still cool looking and super fun to use, nade jumping, gravity hammer flinging players and vehicles around. and slowly over time stuff like this was taken out or balanced to fit more in and encourage more comp and esports focused play. its to the point where all of halo infinites vehicles feel shitty, grav hammer imo feels like complete ass, stalker rifle, mangler, some of the other guns that i don’t remember the names of rn are just either A. worse versions of previous guns or technically better but just less fun, case and point… the sniper being SUPER hard to use, or the stalker rifle being a slower shooting carbine from previous games that requires super pin point precision, or it even applies to how they design the maps, the player collision, removing a lot of the wacky and fun physics etc

This issue is why I quit wow. My spec (destro) was OP end of BFA because of borrowed power creep, so they completely gutted it and changed how it played. It went from being a deterministic cleave spec to a totally rng aoe spec in the name of balance. Also - i played this spec when it was rubbish and when it was great, I just love the cleave play style, and even when it was “bad” I still did big numbers. Fair enough if it needed a nerf, but ruining the identity of my favourite spec killed the game for me.

For me it depends on the game. Non-pvp games that are still competitive like diablo titles or pve mmos don't really bother me too much when there's a "meta" that's moderately more effective. I can relate to this video. I always loved playing Murky in HOTS. He was insanely squishy early game and your team had to support you in team fights, but if they did you would just stomp the enemy as soon as you hit level 20. Before that I played Lucio, but they nerfed his healing talent that let you double crossfade to reset amp it up's duration, so you basically cut your healing and speed boosts in half by losing that talent.
@rashara9751

@TheJakeskates
@TheJakeskates Год назад
@@Twelcool Yes, he was able to before his rework... "Encore Tier 7 (Hero Level 20) Swapping Crossfade tracks while Amp It Up is active will set Amp It Up back to its max duration. Can only happen once per cast.." It was a level 20 talent that got replaced by the stupid high-five ult 20 talent. Resetting duration on either speed boost or healing boost was so broken; it allowed you to easily hit 300k healing in a game and speed-boost your entire team in and out of enemy towers for easy picks. The trick was, instead of switching from healing to speed boost (and vice versa), you could just hit W a second time to double up the duration of your heal or speed boost. It was the most broken but fun talent ever made in HOTS. You probably didn't know about how broken it was because games usually didn't get to level 20 with a good Lucio main playing him. It still annoys me today when I queue with Lucios who chose boombox and sit in the back of the team on healing boost the entire game. Such a waste of so much potential. I used to carry games with my friends on discord since I could zip around the map and aoe heal single targets more than single-target healers could. Enemy teams started focussing me down every game and still wouldn't win since I could just double speed boost away. So many fun times...

@MCharlesPainting
@MCharlesPainting 2 месяца назад
That's how many games used to be, until they ruined them. Call of Duty comes to mind, after about 2010. However, you must have heard about people who are bad at CS:GO and quit, right? One possible issue with CS:GO is that it has a fairly high skill floor. It's only fun if you're already pretty good or literally enjoy losing (meaning, you enjoy the act of playing and don't care about winning). Nonetheless, CS:GO is popular partly because of what you said. However, a big problem with modern CS:GO, however, is that it's completely run by loot boxes/gambling, if you look at the data reports and investigations about it.

WoW players cheering on how balance should be the priority are the same people complaining how every class in WoW feels the same, and how class identity is gone. Ultimately balanced games just turn into chess where everyone has the exact same tools, and that's not something MMOs should strive for. In my opinion being kinda OP is fine, as long as there are a lot of little ways for different classes to be OP in their own unqiue way.

The two major things worth bringing up is that one, balancing in multiplayer games like Overwatch is REQUIRED to enable the identities of differing characters to even really shine and be relevant. Sure widow might have a really important identity, but if she is the end all be all of an Overwatch meta it forces characters like Pharah out and makes the game overall way less diverse and interesting than if you change the balancing so different playstyles are viable. The other point is that while preserving a character's identity in balance is preferred, there are times it is not attainable because the identity itself is far too flawed to make sense. Take Doomfist, although he was bad for most of Overwatch 1, he was unfun to play against due to him being a Tankier dps one shot character that could rollout from 2 miles away and just kill you, it just wasn't engaging to play against and it made the game kind of feel like a horror game where you have to check every other corner and roof to not get oneshot. This is combined with the fact that his whole kit was a dps with cc. While having cc to combo people and a one shot in his fist was his major identity in Overwatch 1, in Overwatch 2 when both there is less of a focus on cc and in general oneshots like his didn't feel great in the game, it made sense to change his identity to fit the overall game more so that there is less frustration. (Again, I know doom was dogshit but I am just referring to his identity and playstyle) Yes we should preserve a character's identity all we can but there are simply times that it is not possible to do so while maintaining a healthy game for everyone else.

(gtx turned to rtx 20 series, then 20 series turned to 30 series) then magically BOTH of them had the graphics cards go out within a month of the new release, and of course, the geforce update, was the culprit, but when I tried to use the warranty, i was always just a month or 2 passed the warranty date. The last one, I barely even used for gaming, it was a work/school only computer, with very few hours on it. I built a box again, and am having Zero issues, but I will say that the 2 broken laptops, were $1700 from 2016, and $3700 in 2020, i believe. It is horribly unfun when a character/legend is clearly overpowered. It’s unfun for the other team, and it is unfun being forced to play that character. It is better to have some under tuned than have one CLEARLY better. At least in that case you disappoint a couple heroes vs make a stale and mandatory meta. It literally ruins games: Destiny and stasis. Overwatch and Brig (or Zarya or Sojourn). Apex and Sear. Not fun to play against and no diversity.

As white, you're expected to at least draw while as black, most times you hope for a draw. That's why someone winning as black in pro play is seen as a great thing as you did something against the odds. Chess is the perfect example where a game is fun because of its imbalance.

Man this video hits close to home - I have abt 3.5k on Doomfist in OW1 and I've been gm/t500 since s10. His unique game-play and the reward you would get out of his mastery was so satisfying and the main reason why I kept grinding the game. I was first concerned, but still intended to play him, whenever they announced Tank Doom would be a thing, but him just being complete dog tier at launch and lowering his skill ceiling by killing most intriguing techs us doom players would learn made it really demotivating for me to play. Which makes me really envious, since the majority of people are convinced (including me) that ow2 is a better game overall. I stopped playing during my climb at m1/low gm mmr, because I had enough of the unrewarding gameplay and cancerous community flaming you 24/7 for playing him. I played doom in all the metas at high elo in the past ,no matter the meta, I played it and even back then he was was dogshit in most metas and yet he still had something that made it fun and rewarding to play him , but yes while dooms gameplay is still unique it just didn't keep the fun that made me fall in love with him in ow1. And I know I'm not alone, ik so many OG doom players and high elo dooms and they eighter quit, or play diff characters. - Most who still grind the hero are streamers who probably would've quit the game/hero too if they didn't stream in the first place. :(

I highly disagree that to have fun everything has to be balanced and anti fun to a certain degree, League USED to embrace this by making it so if you outplayed everyone and got so far ahead no matter what character you played you could take on the world. Thats ideal balance in my eyes rewarding your efforts no matter what class you play. However since trolls and loop holes now everything is neutered even if fed you can't feel the fruits of your labor which is why its lost the fun. Having balance while braking the balance for those who over perform is the key to keeping fun in my opinion. Balance is key but making people feel over powered for having played well is also key to keeping engagement and fun. No one wants to play a game where no matter how good they do doesn't matter which is where league and many other games are now since its seen as "unfair" games need to get back to rewarding the players performance instead of making others not feel bad for not being as good. Yes it feels bad to suck but just like gambling it feels so great when you win.
@scyndek8755

If people didn't have the feeling of knowing the others feel bad for doing well or playing well less players will play it or do so. Its common knowledge same with sports. Can you imagine if football or basketball gave points to a team getting crushed to make it more fair? Many fans would stop watching and the sports would die. Stop trying to ruin the fun of games in the objective that is foolish of making everyone "Feel Good" regardless of the result. You will feel bad when you lose. You will feel much better when you win.

Most of the time I play the thing that is fun for me. The problem comes if it’s not even remotely viable to play. You probably won’t have fun when the opponent has significant advantage. That’s the hard part in balancing games. You as a developer should make all the roles, characters etc to either be at least viable or to fill a certain purpose and also to be fun to play at the same time.

When I think about this I think of bf4 gadgets which where fun vs versatility, there's a lot of different gadgets but I'm gonna talk about the suav vs tug/mav. Suav can be used to kamikaze and counter snipe. Tug is goated in SND and pretty much every other mode. Mav is used to bully campers and pilots. Form over function their all great but some are just funnier to use.

good game balance is simply a way of delivering consistent fun for all players involved. Bad balance reduced risk vs reward (certain characters/weapons have less risk because they're more powerful), punishes investment into characters or playstyle, and disengages players by taking away their choice. reducing/changing character identity is a hard choice that must be made sometimes. The OW2 devs likely decided that OG doomfist's playstyle would hurt OW2 more than the removal of his DPS identity would.
@davedoublee-indiegamedev8633
Aurelion's Sol design was shit, come on. Nobody like ASol, everything about him was clunky AF. He was not fun. In games like League, there will always be players who are diehard fans of some champions, even if that champion is poorly designed. So let me give you another perspective on this: if a champion has 1000 diehard fans and they rework the champion to be more fun, those diehard players sure will cry, but if the rework now brings 10000 more diehard fans, then the rework is successful.

This debate is compounded by the fact that you can find good examples on both ends Balance 1st got some examples if you look hard enough like...... CSGO or CS 1.6? Fun 1st has this category called Kusoge where the games are either busted by design or just balanced so poorly but it's still fun and have a die-hard community. 2 examples of such cases are MVC2 and MVC3

CSGO is not exactly balanced, it is homogenized, but 95% of guns are totally useless, is just that people don't care because CSGO culture evolved to just using AK, M4, Deagle and AWP, in any other game people would freak out for the other 95% of guns being shit.

True Balance is never achievable. Players will always find some way to get around mechanics put in place to "ensure" balance. No developer has ever been able to find the magic equation to avoid this eventuality. The only way they could hope to come close to true balance is to just let everyone do whatever they want. If everyone can do something, then equal potential exists on all sides. Would this be fun? Well, for those who want to be assholes, absolutely. They could treat other players however they want and get their e-rocks off while doing it. But for those who don't want to deal with assholes, the experience will be the exact opposite of fun, even though nothing stops them from turning around and dishing out the same actions. Thing is, if they don't want to deal with assholes, then they likely have no desire become assholes themselves. So "fun" would be very one-sided in such cases. In real life, we can do whatever we want. But we often don't because laws exist with real consequences if we break them. The potential to do anything we want is there. The only thing holding most of us back is knowing that if we do, there's fines, prison, and potentially a death penalty. In a video game, the only thing that would hold players back from doing anything would be those penalties being applied to them in real life. Because applying them to a toon in a game means nothing. They'll just create a new one, or create a new account and go/ right back to being assholes in game again. Crimes committed in a game are not equal with crimes committed in real life. And they shouldn't be. I'm just illustrating that they would need to be in order to instill self-restraint on the part of most players. With self-restraint and the potential of doing anything, fun can be had on a more balanced scale. That's just my far-flung observation.

This guy said that the lack of balance in Modern Warfare 2 (2009) was acceptable because no one knew better back then. This makes no sense and he had no idea what he was talking about. Of course we knew better back then. Everyone was complaining back in 2009 and 2010! And in fact, Infinity Ward DID nerf some weapons (but not the worst ones for some odd reason--like the underbarrel grenade launchers and One Man Army perk). That's just a terrible excuse to say no one knew better back then. But I do agree that in many instances fun should take precedent over balance.

What this video completely forgets to mention is, that all these reworked champions in League were extremely unpopular and sometimes had unhealthy gameplay. Fiddlesticks for instance: I would rather play against a jungler, i constantly had to track because of his teamfight deciding ults rather than laning against support fiddle with his bs crows. Mundo got way better because he can actually go where he pleases with his new passive. Midscope updates revived Taliyah and Janna for me Asol IS very unsatisfying in his current form, because his passive has waay too much powerbudget and playing around 3 bs stars revolving around you that deal half of your damage and you really cant control that well doesnt feel good. Asol might be a better Dragon than Shyvana after the update. Also League is on one hand relatively balanced, (WR 40-60% max, but thats the extreme), but on the other hand you always have the "stronger" class (The half year Enchanter vs Tank support switcheroo Riot does each year) We dont have a balancing/tuning problem in League, we have an "overloaded" problem. Best example is Akshan (imo worse than Aphelios) His W alone is infinite stealth, ally revive on scoundrel kill, ms boost towards scoundrel, extra money on scoundrel kill and i believe a fucking Warwick tracking passive to scoundrels. (Scoundrels are enemies, that recently killed your teammates) Tldr; if this dude is actually one of the two Asol mains and complains about the planned rework, before anything is even confirmed, i will win the Lottery tomorrow, because the chances are about the same. Dude probably played Asol once in Aram and thought it was cool, because nobody knew how to play against the stars, because nobody has seen Asol before.

I think that the video was very poorly worded and Asmo did a way better job at describing it. For example in OW it is completely unfun to play meta 9 in high ranks where you have 9 meta picks and the rest is just trash under them regardless of the map, which is what happened at some point. But then again it's also very unfun when Wrecking Ball, the hero whose identity was built around him booping and soft CCing his opponents by taking advantage of complex geometry decisions, got the boop distances absolutely decimated removing the hero's identity almost completely. And he was still the best tank in the game for a while because that wasn't even what made him the top tank So balance and fun go hand to hand and are directly correlated, but you can approach both in so many wrong ways that makes the whole ordeal unfun bullshit

The real thing that has no place in games is player's fragile egos they bring with them from the outside world. The real balance in MP games is macro balance. PvE or PvP, it's the same. If you win by making another player lose, you should NEVER expect to win more than, say, 60% of the time if you're top in the world. Otherwise, it's unbalanced. Skill needs to matter but it cant be the only thing that matters. If it did, you would just compare the win ratio of each player and decide the match automatically. This is something that players don't seem to understand often. Your personal skill is a direct threat to the fun of other people. Sure you can want to shonen main character it and become the best there ever was. But don't blame the designers or anyone else when you find out the best doesn't = 100% win rate. B/c that's effectively bullying. Wins only matter in the context of losses, and what happens IN the game is way more important (or you should value it as such!) than the outcome. Life works the exact same way. Chess is the most popular mainstream sport/game (including baseball, football, etc) that's borderline perfectly balanced, but it still has such a vast gamestate (# of moves that could happen) that it becomes impossible to 'solve' and personality shines through no matter what you decide to do. That is the 'identity' that games reveal, and it's my #1 favorite part of this existence we call life. :) Put two people in front of a sufficiently advanced game, and there's no chance they'll do the same thing... unless 'dominant strategy' comes and ruins that, which is what Asmon spent most of this video (rightfully) railing against.

After they did the rework for Mercy, someone who I absolutely loved to play, if I had EVER played another Support, it was constant insults and my other team members getting angry at me if I didn't. I love that Minecraft was the game running on that laptop. It's such a deceptive game. People look at it in its vanilla form and scoff at how sub-standard the graphics are... Yeah. the base game's visual fidelity at the tilesheet level is very low-res... But if the average user were to crank up the game's render distance to max and run the game at full screen with native desktop resolution, their computer will choke on it. Running with ultri-hi-rez textures and fancy realistic shaders will choke a computer even if render distance is set to default. Put the two together and unless you have a powerful machine, forget it. Minecraft is a beast in a mouse form, and many people don't even realize it.

Lmao Orochi was absolutely never broken in any way. He always was one of the most trash tier character in the game and is currently, even after tons of reworks to buff him, still not S tier. Yes, having that easy go to "hated" character/weapon/class in a game can be fun in certain circumstances; but although in some game it may be very easy to explain why it is objectively op and thus validate the hate; it can also sometimes simply be due to dogshit players not understanding a thing about the game they play. This is mostly true for fighting games. Go play smash (or any game with a high skill floor) and I guarantee you that the characters you'll hate playing against are often not in the competitive top tier.
