The writing in this game was a massive departure from the trilogy. Having heard the majority of the writers were young 20 somethings in or just graduating College it makes a lot of sense.

"The writing in this game was a massive departure from the trilogy." Yeah, the writing was a massive departure form the trilogy because it was a massive departure from the trilogy. They spend 3 games to build up one of the greatest most immersive sci-fi universes in video game history and with Andromeda they had nothing better to do than to piss that all away. All the great history and cultures of all the species of the trilogy were pretty much gone. The only two new species with history in Andromeda were super flat, boring and uninteresting and couldn't hold a candle to the world building of the old MEs.

@@TheGerudan the history and culture was there for the new team to use and they chose not to. BTW, the best writing in the OT was very clearly the 1st game, so it isn't true to say that they spent 3 games building up to it.

The major problem with the game was forcing the developers to use the Frostbite Engine instead of the Unreal Engine, EA forced all their developers to use the Frostbite Engine in their games but after the backlash that Andromeda and especially Anthem received, EA reversed that rule

My thought exactly. Inquisition was a brilliant game with decent facial animations. And anything they couldn't quite manage with facial expression was achieved by body language and smart camera angles. Andromeda was just bland and unengaging. I wish people wouldn't compare it to Inquisition. Yes the Hinterlands was a bad start, but for most of the game the side content is fascinating and well connected to plot and lore. Andromeda side quests are so boring I ended up skipping all of it on the last 2 planets. Only to find that the core missions were dull too and the end made no sense and was unfulfilling. I didnt even want to talk to the team in the epilogue party. I didnt care about any of them except Drax (and that's after romancing Cora). The writing was just uninspired. It's a waste, because they had a great premise.

For me, Mass Effect Andronmeda really suffered from the recent phenomena in games were every character, including the protagonist has to be overtly quirky. But if everybody is quirky or special - nobody is. And there were no truly grounded characters, except for the ones you were limited in your interaction with, such as Dr. Lexi or Drack, maybe Jaal... It feels like a bunch of college students steal a ship and luck into beating the bad guy who just happens to be just fallible enough to be always bested by the heroes and not an actual threat... Turns out, I have more opinions on this than I thought. 😂

Yeah I felt the same way. It was like watching a Marvel movie. A character doesn't need to be "lmao so random quirky weird funny" to be interesting. Wrex was the typical "angry big mean warrior guy race" but he was one of the most interesting characters. Mordin was the typical "big-brain cold absent-minded scientist" but his arc from defending the genophage in every conversation to sacrificing his life to cure it was well-done. I remember when playing Andromeda and during the male human companion's loyalty mission, I found myself thinking, how is someone like this was allowed to be part of this operation?" Felt that way about Peebee too. I wanted to see a romance though and the Turian was the only female companion I could stand lol.

Also the abuse of the open world mechanic ESPECIALLY in a game that was entirely narrative /story driven. Nothing worse than having 800 boring collection side quests you should do when they could take that time to actually develop some cool story missions. Open world is literally the worst thing to happen to modern gaming. More so than monetization. At least I get something from that exchange. Open world, you literally just get a game of less quality than you would have if they didn't need to design a bunch of useless empty space that then takes up processing power. If a game is open world it loses about 50% of its replayability because I just don't want to go through the CHORE that is the open world

I didn't hate it, I just didn't think it was a good Mass Effect game. There were some good aspects, the combat, powers, and armor/weapon customization was excellent and aside from the character's faces the visuals were really good also. My main issue was the plot and the bland characters. I remember very little of the main story and I don't even remember who my squadmates were. Completely forgettable. From everything I've heard, I think its because Inquisition was hand crafted by humans all the way through. It might be because only some conversations get cutscenes in Inquisition. The run of the mill convos you get when you click on NPCs and they have nothing story-important to say are procedurally generated. The thing is, with Inquisition, Bioware knew their procedural animation didn't cut it so they worked around that by keeping the camera very far and at an angle that mostly kept the Inquisitor's face obscured.

My biggest issue (of many) with ME:A was to do with Ryder him/herself. Shepard commanded respect/fear (depending on your choices) and people looked to them accordingly in the universe. It was essentially believable that Shepard could basically become the savior of the galaxy. Ryder on the other hand is undermined from the start: not next in line to become pathfinder, but gets it anyway for no reason. Not respected among their crew, not showing any real leadership or command ability. The only reason Ryder is special at all is the AI, and they weren't the ones that built it, were involved with it, or even chose to use it. Ryder is arguably not the protagonist, just the vehicle for the savior of the Andromeda galaxy; SAM the AI.

@@Rafro96I can see why you might interpret what I said that way, but not what I meant. I didn't need the protagonist to be a Shepard clone for it to work, but I personally feel that I want to play the protagonist, not the sidekick. And honestly that's what Ryder felt like to me for most of the game. The intern that got put in charge but noone takes seriously even when I chose assertive dialogue options. Underdogs taking command and having a character arc of growth would be interesting and Ryder might have been that - but only if there was a rational reason for them to get the pathfinder role, and a rational reason for everyone else to accept it. I get the Alec wanted to keep the AI in the family for his own ends, but literally everyone else should have basically said "er no. Cora is pathfinder. End of discussion. Ryder, you can carry the AI and make everyone tea at the meeting". As for growth, Ryder doesn't really follow much of a character arc imo. If we gloss over and accept we are the pathfinder and everyone is happy, how does Ryder step up and prove everyone's faith in them? By driving the AI around to configure the vaults. Even the combat abilities don't feel like your own as they did with Shepard: they feel like AI given augmentation from the paradigm system that lets you cut between biotic, tech & soldier profiles.

As a devoted Mass Effect fan, i had dug into everything i could during Andromeda's development. I saw the writing on the wall with the fact that almost none of the main ME team had worked on the game, it was being made in a small satellite studio, and had an almost entirely new writing team... then when the news came out that the team had asked on multiple occasions for a release delay even before the original release window was announced, i knew it wouldn't be a solid ME game. To that end i have always refused to see it as a Mass Effect game, but rather a side game set in the Mass Effect universe. I have never called it Mass Effect: Andromeda, instead only referring to it as Andromeda... it took some mental gymnastics originally, but i just chose to view it on its own as its own game... and i found i enjoyed it, it is a bit faster paced(in movement and combat) and a bit more dynamic in combat tactics and ability, and that alone is enough to distinguish it... so i play it for the game play and mechanics... if i want story... i play the legendary edition... again

Well said! After playing Andromeda for the first time earlier this year, I was blown away by how not ME it was. The physically differences in the Turians and Salarians, the single face design for all Asari, the unnatural behavior of all the Turians (all lovey-dovey and saccharine sweet). There was so much that just screamed "NOT BIOWARE". I'm struggling to get through this first (and likely only) Andromeda playthrough. It doesn't give me hope for the next ME game tbh. Companions were mostly middle of the road, but there were some good character missions. I liked the idea of the research menu and allowing colonists to come out of Cryo as you made the region able to support more life, but ultimately neither of these systems did anything for the gameplay mechanics, so there was never much incentive to engage with them. I would say if you like RPG's and 3rd person shooters this is a gam worth playing, just don't go into it expecting something as good as any of the previous mass effect games.

Started playing Andromeda again recently on the Series S after another play through of ME Legendary Edition. I enjoy the game for what it is and for a guy that played it in the early days the animations are no where near as bad as they were those first few weeks after launch. Not just weird body movements - characters stand in really odd relationship to one-another. One of my biggest problems with the game to me was the lack of meaningful exploration. I liked the idea of reaching a new galaxy and being the first human to explore new worlds and contacting new alien species. Yet you arrive and it's all been done, planets have already been explored, some even have small settlements. The only new species is already familiar with humans. You're called Pathfinder, but most paths have been found already. Games with technical issues and poor animation can be forgiven if the rest is good, but they dropped the ball with the plot and characters. I think they leaned way too far on the "space magic" plot device with the vaults and planet terraforming and characters just don't have the same depth and personality. I can easily recall all crewmates from each game of the original trilogy and many NPCs, but after finishing Andromeda I can barely remember the Tempest crew, let alone NPCs. I remember Suvi because I romanced her, but barely anyone else.

Personally I think it is better than ME3, basically every criticism of ME:A can be said of ME3 and it is only given a pass due to being part of the original trilogy. ME3 was a buggy mess on launch with hitbox issues making combat far harder oftentimes, the story of ME 3 is terrible and removes anything terrifying about the reapers. The fundamental horror aspect of SciFi is the unknown, by making the Reaper's motives known it kills the fear we all first felt when learning of the Reapers and Sovereign. The combat itself was already a step back from ME2, and as is the trend with the series Renegade is made more into the moustache twirling villain instead of being the person who does what is necessary at all cost. It also has many more contrived plot points than even Andromeda. If ME3 was not the conclusion to a beloved series it would be held in far worse regard than it already is.

Or maybe the Crucible as a concept at all (the ending isn't why that is bad)? Or perhaps I could talk about the predatory DLC practices which based on developer interviews resulted in the story being changed? Or should I talk about the new ME3 squadmates? Or maybe I should talk about how glitchy the game was on launch (it shared that with Andromeda)? Or maybe how adding multiplayer took away much dev time that could have been used to make fix said bugs? The entire concept of YOU being the alien in an unexplored part of the galaxy was a great premise. I liked how each of the new crewmates interacted, especially the ageing Krogan battlemaster who raised his granddaughter despite the shaman who considered them both worthless. The Kett, as a whole, felt a tiny bit flat as main antagonists. They were interesting, but there weren't all that many facets to them. Making decisions on the other species' arcs felt amazing. It really bummed me out when they teased the Quarian arc in the epilogue, only for that DLC to never surface due to the intense trolling reviewers did of the initial version of the game. Just jumped back into this game. And, oh boy weapon strengths changed, skills like Annihilation now has duration, you can no longer spam the jets on the nomad to "float" the nomad along terrain or when falling, Nomad doesn't regenerate life support even when out of danger zones, additionally you don't regenerate life support on Eos while inside the Nomad (bug) you cant drive of the cliff near the ket base as it will asume you are in infinite freefall and reset you, cant save near doors and can only save in very very specific locations during missions, enemies in walls and floors, objects that cant be scanned yet are highlighted, waypoints leading to wrong areas, the markers on the compass at the top, yea the ones that would highlight points of interest like remnant structures and pod modules are no longer there. They often stacked on-top of eachother making it hard to figure out whats there but now its entirely gone and the compass is 99%useless. Theres balancing issues at endgame and still character bugs like shifting character positions while in diologe or viewing the insides of floors/walls/ceilings/people during some scenes (especially if you skip a few parts) NPCs you can yet cant talk to, Voeld wounded in the ruined outpost can no longer be talked to, previously you could and it would sometimes count towards a quest( possibly still bugged out), audio cuts out when meeting Jaal especially if you skip any of his lines, item limit doesn't carry over to NG+ which means you can't pick up any new and better gear unless you get rid of 50+ items, Mods count towards inventory weight, Your kills/assists drop items and gear far more consistently than NPC/companion ones. Some Npcs on the Ark are static locked with no or little animation (bug) additionally some go through the floor still jaal included when exploring with him, Theres more, 40 mins in and ive already recorded 12 different funny and kinda sad bugs. I Wonder if i can still launch the nomad into the stratusphere. Lodge it in somewhere with a movable object in front of it/underneath or go really fast into a crevasse and boost into it at certain angles and it would send you flying.... Or sam will tell you its critically damaged and wont move. 😂

I recently picked up this game during the Steam sale, and while I've enjoyed the companion banter and some of the loyalty quests, I am /dreading/ doing a replay. The quests are tedious, the landing/departure cinematics take forever, the TEMPERATURE WARNINGS can't be turned off, there are still quest bugs, i hate having to hold E to use everything (why can't i just tap once and be done?), and my god, the Remnant puzzles and vaults can fuck right off. IF the next mass effect enables you to import a save from Andromeda, that's the only reason to replay it and try to get the outcomes i want. But i really hope they'll do something similar to Mass Effect 2 and give us a comic thing to choose critical decisions without having to force our way through that game again. Oh, and I nearly forgot: the SAM's Memories quest. A critically important quest for learning some very important details about the Initiative... is locked behind a tedious fetch quest. And I mean fucking TEDIOUS! I'm so goddamn tired of all these quests that are "ON HOLD", forcing me to sit on my hands and wait for a resolution EVENTUALLY. These are supposed to be important story pieces to add intrigue and understanding, and they make it a fucking slog to actually do? Bioware, for christ's sake, get people who know what the fuck they're doing! Or at LEAST have experienced people around to keep these young story tellers in check. I understand you don't become a better writer without some failures along the way, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with having older, wiser mentors around to tell people that something doesn't work because of whatever reason. The game has actually improved a lot with the new patches - the expressions are better, the characters are much good looking, there is a new limitless galaxy to explore and the combat is awesome. But if you easily get bored by long exposition dumps, cheesy dialogue, and dry, deadpan humor + need every dialogue choice to evoke an emotional reaction from you - then definitely this is not the game for you. The biggest issue is Ryder's personality and the choices having nearly zero impact on the story. I believe most people were disappointed with the story and dialogue because like the original trilogy they believed by pursuing only one morality like paragon/renegade would give them super emotionally engaging scenes as they did with Shepard which would also drastically alter the story and the endgame. The problem is - Andromeda takes no such risks, you could be the worst Pathfinder yet the story would play out exactly the same save for one character's death in the ending. Ignore all the sidequests, make the worst decisions possible, be the most reluctant, lazy & incompetent explorer ever, be an a$$ to your squadmates, gaslight and shift the blame on the top brass - no problem!! All you get at the most is a scolding from some character - there are no world-altering implications save for some questlines being blocked in the Krogan ark, squadmates do not leave your ship and the bad guy never wins because of your incompetence. So, to make Ryder engaging it's up to the player to make them practical, decisive and show leadership skills when needed & to empathise + react emotionally when building relationships. Here the issue is that making Ryder emotional when they need to show leadership makes them an absolute, boring, indecisive downer & making them practical when they are supposed to open up about their feelings make them a slow, socially incompetent robot who behaves like a potential serial killer. Oh god, and the flirting is so horribly written and voice-acted. Shepard could be a bro ( paragon ) or an a$$ ( renegade ) depending on the choice - yet their alpha personality was a constant that made them engaging - they always have a plan, is headstrong and is a natural leader + they earned their place & were a smooth flirt. Characters were in awe of them and were naturally drawn to them. Compared to Shepard - Ryder is an omega - follows protocol to a t, is led around by those around them + SAM, reacts to events without a plan, was given authority as a handmedown. The only impactful decisive action they take is using the scourge against the kett which unlocks only after completing a long sidequest - which requires patience.

The difference between this and Inquisition was that while there was ALOT of bloat in Inquisition - all the areas seemed much more hand crafted. I actually enjoyed finding abandoned ruins or a haunted mansion etc. Hell, even just finding a skeleton surrounded by cheese wheels and empty bottles gave me a chuckle. It really felt like there were things to explore. Plus the flora and fauna made sense. A pack of wolves chasing a Halla in a forest makes sense. In Andromeda there were like 2 or 3 types of creatures and they just dropped from the sky and did very little. The environments didn't feel alive. Also on one planet they told us to go to a "city" - there we like 5 people there. Characters would often talk about places which didn't look they way there were being talked about. They were just small empty shells. It sad that i felt more like an explorer in dragon age that i did in this game.

Well that's the thing. They're both games that were ruined by the trend of open world gaming. They're games that both had previous entries being completely narrative driven story games. Then they had to water them down to make the space you can walk around in unnecessarily big and fill it full of fetch quests. Since they have to spend so much time on boring useless shit the story ends up suffering like it did in both games

My guy you do realise that the whole planet of Habitat 7 is highly toxic, its stated in lore that the planet has an unbreathable argon-nitrogen atmosphere. So, sharing the helmet would already be out of the question. Not only that but Ryder's helmet breaking caused them to take panic breaths. You know. Something people do when they are panicking. That means that even if the planet wasn't as toxic Ryder would still need the helmet more than Alec. And Alec is more than happy to give his life for his child. It makes sense with who he is. Could you say that is dumb? Sure. It's dumb to try and save your kid. But what matters is if it makes sense. Characters can be dumb as long as it makes sense with their character. There is no scenario in which Alec can survive without changing the situation. Like you can dislike Andromeda if you want. But please don't lie about something just to hate it further.

Mass Effect Andromeda 2023 UPDATE 9/11/2023! After over 4714 hours 19 minutes as of this moment, of playing this game, I finally realized why I enjoy it more than all the other Mass Effect games. It’s because of the multitude of diverse quests, projects, and personal interactions that one is presented with. None of these must be completed in any specific sequence to achieve an outcome. And many can be skipped altogether, which will not adversely affect the game overall. As a result, I find the game very relaxing and non-stressful to play. I will say, however, that my game is very heavily modified with 30+ Nexus mods, which overcomes many of those complaints from those playing an unmodified version of the game. I am currently on another playthrough of MELE which I already have 1714+ hours of play invested. Again the trilogy is also heavily modded.

I hated the glitchy mess that it was at launch. After all the updates to fix it, I had a pretty great time with the combat. The story...not so much. It *does* have some memorable moments, and I like a couple of the characters. But I dislike the main character so much that it undoes a lot of the good stuff. Also, many of the memorable moments are from callbacks to the main ME games. Also also, there are some intriguing mysteries, but none are answered. Also also also, only 1 of the novels based on it was worth reading (the 1st one was utterly pointless and boring, and the 2nd was okay but didn't actually add anything). The 3rd had interesting stuff with all of the races we didn't see on their ship; Quarians, Elcor, Batarians, Volus, and even Drell. If the canceled DLC was going to be about that, it's a shame since it was by far the best novel and most interesting concept as far as I'm concerned.

I liked the departure and forging a new direction from the original trilogy while still being grounded in that to provide background. Once the shenanigans came to light with Anthems development it made sense why both games suffered. Shitty management. I still wish the story would be continued, finding the Quarrian, Volus, Elcor, and other races Ark.

The original trilogy reminds me a lot of what made Babylon 5 such a huge hit back in the day. At least for me... And it is the characters and stories around them and the excellent casting and performances. If you have even a huge decision in front of you, but you have no skin in the game, it doesn't really matter... I remember in ME3 pulling that renegade option on Mordin (or whatever the Salarian was called) and it wounded me... One of the most dramatic things I've seen in a game. The scene was perfect, the target wasn't just random-baddie-325 and the consequences of your actions basically had a whole race of aliens in balance. And it wasn't just random-aliens-32, but your squad mates and a race you found out that had been incredibly effed by the Salarians... You basically build that moment through three games and the apex moment is huge... No matter if the ending was a little lackluster, just this moment was of pure brilliance... Just to hear Mordin scream "I made a mistake..." sums up the scene perfectly. That is just pure genious... And I can still remember it today. A decade later after experiencing it...

The big issue with Andromeda, with regard to story and writing, is everything was just a worse version of something from the original Mass Effect. What if the reapers were just biology reapers as opposed to technology reapers? What if the human crew were not just boring but, like Liam, actively a detriment to the whole endeavour? Hey look, it's Liara if she was a stupid asshole and a liability. There's Garrus if he was a girl and a criminal instead of a Cop. Look it's Wrex but he talks about being old a lot more. Also new alien that is just kind of a guy also he might have genetic memory or whatever. The rest of your crew range from Science Girl and Pilot guy, who I liked but not enough to remember their names, to famous VA doctor who didn't matter and the guy in engineering who was the only person worse than Peebee that I wanted to die horribly. I recently went back to try play it again and I couldn't make it off the starting planet it felt that bad.
