Why Gas Prices In The U.S. Vary

As of October 4, 2021, the average price for a gallon of gasoline in the United States reached about $3.19. A closer look at the costs of a single gallon of fuel can be even more revealing. The refinery count in the United States has shrunk dramatically over the last several decades. That means the country relies on an ever-smaller number of ever-larger plants and is more vulnerable to supply constraints in the wake of outages.

Here is what will happen. As usual gas prices will go down over the winter. Let's say they drop 30 cents a gallon. Then come April they will start to raise them a 8 to 10 cents a gallon at a time. People will figure still cheaper then before. They will keep doing this till they are back to the highest price it was before they lowered the price of gas. Then they will add another 25 cents and/or more over then next few months so we all will be paying at least 30 cents a gallon MORE then the highest price this year. It's basically a bait and switch. So we can very easily have a $3.80 cent average or more by this time next year. Oil companies want to make up for all that lost revenue from Covid as well as the oil producing countries. Why do you think the cost of just about everything is up 15% and MORE. it's to make up for lost revenue.

NO i disagree, if one looks at available data directly one comes to an expanded assessment that focuses much more on the role of taxes. And as i said elsewhere , where those fuel taxes are the highest the roadways are in the worst conditions, to wit, California with urban roadways that are horrendous, badly in need of complete resurfacing, but cant be done b/c overpopulation has lead to such severe chronic congestion that anything other than limited patchwork would create instant gridlock. Gas station manager here. There’s some important details left out that lead to increased prices. Supply side and demand was explained but that margin and marketing cost of fuel has also increased. With gas apps like Gas Buddy, GetUpside and many others, these frequently used apps cost stations like our money to fund promotions and have advertising. This is something that we didn’t even have an option to use 20 years ago. Another thing that has changed our business is maintaining the stations, pumps are more electronic and sophisticated than before, having screens and EMV protections like pump lockouts. Part from some manufacturers now come with expiration dates, creating even more increased maintenance cost. Combine this with increased fuel economy and in some cases less demand than last years we are forced to makeup volume with margin. Industry average years ago was in a ball park range of .20 per gallon of gasoline, diesel tends to have higher margins. With inflation changing everything else, our lowest margins are now .25-.30 range, business seasons can see .40+cent margins on fuel. One thing is for certain, even with the onset of electric vehicles, the petroleum based fleet will be around for many years to come.
@wordwarrior2350

Very interesting, and I know it is off the subject, BUT why not mention YOUR income from food and drink sales and other services, since YOU are talking about other costs like pump maintanence?
@testthewest123
@testthewest123 2 года назад
@@wordwarrior2350 Maybe because pump maintanence is mandatory for providing fuel and factors in fuel prices, while food and drink sales is a seperate thing, that's not run to subsidize the fuel selling business. Also, this manager was talking about differences between now and past times. Selling food and drinks is a constant here, that hasn't changed much I guess, thus it is pointless bringing it up.

@wordwarrior2350 2 года назад

I am sorry that YOU can only see things the way YOU see them and have a need to make excuses for people YOU have nothing to do with. They also never mention how the gas companies charge them such prices that they need to sell food and drink. Thanks for showing how narrow minded YOU are, definitley. Thanks anyway.
@testthewest123
@testthewest123 2 года назад
@@wordwarrior2350 Have you lost your mind? I acting like a hero? Why, because I responded to you instead of just ignoring it? And the rest you write is sadly the same bs. Any business owner looks at the different products and their margins and will cut the ones that are not profitable or increase the prices until they are. And gas companies do just the same, or who do you think pays for all the new ideas concerning environment, CO2 etc? Lastly, selling food and drink is not a dirty business in any way. If you are a retailer and have the means to offer it, why not? It is completely unrelated to gas prices. Not doing it is leave money on the table. And one last advice: Never call someone narrowminded, if you haven't checked yourself first. You are not a business owner, you have no idea about costs. It is unclear why you even talk about it and get ballistic as soon as someone trties to educate you.

8:40 This is the most silly thing I have seen people do to get cheaper gasoline. Don’t they know their idling car is burning fuel while they wait in line? Don’t they know they are probably burning more money idling their cars than if they had just bought gas elsewhere for just a few cents more per gallon.
@bradysully5755
@bradysully5755 2 года назад
Actually idle doesn’t burn that much gas especially in smaller engine cars. Also I don’t go to Costco or Sam’s club gas because it’s cheep in the sense that my a few people came into the shop with fuel problems. After I asked them where they get their gas, they said Sam’s Club. It’s common for there to sometimes be bad fuel in your location. With the cars I have I’d rather spend the extra 99cents a gallon on 93 octane to prolong the life of my car. I could care less on my truck though. Those turbo cars come into the shop more often now and I think it’s because people just used 87 all the time. There is too many impurities.

YOU and many others have fallen for the Stock broakers trick of thinking YOU are investors. WRONG. One can INVEST when they buy a Companies IPO, after that like 90+ are only traders, which is OK also.YOU are only buying from someone who is selling, period. @Jason Davis I was only talking about stocks and the like. Tecknickly, when YOU buy a house throuse a Real estae agent YOU are buying a house. If YOU buy a house or houses to sell them at a higher price sometime later you are investing in real estate. There are people who collect art and there are people who invest in art. Did I call YOU stupis. I simply said, "YOU are wrong" Try understanding that YOU could be wrong. Why try to insult me, which only shows a form of insecurity on YOUR part. YOU have a great defence system. YOU refuse to admit that YOU may be wrong. I don´t think, "I am that smart" BUT I am much older than YOU have have been a stock broker in London 30 years ago. PERIOD. YOU really have a control problem........ PERIOD. Please stop when YOU see there is no point in going back and forth and still don´t agree.

I've been driving electric cars for the past 5 years. Gas is becoming a distant memory. Something I did in the old days. I usually charge up overnight when power is cheap, or during the day when it's free (solar). My car is as "full as I want it to be every morning. I drive about 30 miles / day. That uses about 8kWh of power. I pay 15c / !kWh from the grid or solar is free. So at most about $1.20 / day or about $17 for 500 miles. I also have solar and Tesla Powerwalls, so can make most of my own electricity. On the rare occasion the grid isn't available it usually doesn't matter at all. Getting past gas does require some adjustments. It's different. Mostly.....it's better, too.

@SteveWithers

@@DR.ELEKTRIK Nothing lasts forever. But they have an 8 year warranty to 70% capacity, so I'm happy. A Tesla Model 3 Long Range at 70% capacity still has 250 mile range. The car works just the same though you might need an extra charging stop on a longer trip. But for the average commute, the battery will last longer than the car.
