Polearms can be big and (relatively) heavy too, although not as much as huge fantasy swords. They also have enormous reach and are cumbersome to carry. So what makes them significantly more practical than oversized metal paddles? Let's have a geeky chat about it. :)

I'm rather left with the impression that greatswords (not giant swords) see use in various niche applications, while the spear (and other polearms) tend to be the general purpose battlefield weapons and smaller swords tend to be prefered for common self defence scenarios. You use plastic or wood for the hand shock alone. Even when wood isn't the cheapest, people still select it as the preferred material. Lots of rich ancient people used wood. It works great!

Funnily enough, hack and slash/character action games seem to have a lot of love for *scythes* of all thing. Main characters that mainly wield swords are surprisingly rare: Dante and Nero, War, Briar (Soulstice) , Kratos, Jack/Raiden and Ryu Hayabusa. Ryu's main weapon isn't even a *giant* sword (though he can wield one) and neither is Raiden's. Kratos' wielding of the Blade of Olympus isn't even as a main available weapon all the time: In GoW 2 it was a bonus weapon for replaying the game, and in GoW 3 it's tied to his special rage form. That leaves about four characters in the genre who use a really big sword as their *main* weapon. Two of which from the same franchise. For scythes, there's - Death's Scythes (Darksiders 2). Dual scythes that can combine into a double-headed polearm-- curved head on one end, straight head on the other. - The Scythe (Darksiders) - Stasis Hollow Scythes (Darksiders 3) - Fangs of Kukúlkan (Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death) - Dante's Death Scythe (Dante's Inferno) - Chernobog (Bayonetta 2) - Scythe of Witch's Bane (Knight's Contract-- interesting for being a folding scythe with a warhammer on the other side of the head) - Osiris (DMC: Devil May Cray) - Crescent Moon Scythe (Ninja Gaiden games) - And Nevan (DMC3). Somewhat. It's an electric guitar that's got a blade that can fold out and be used like a scythe, but generally it's a very unusual weapon. So that's around ten and a half instances of scythes within hack and slash/character action games. Admittedly, it's only four characters that use scythes as their *main* weapon (Death, DI Dante, Marlow Briggs and Heinrich from Knight's Contract), but it bears mentioning that even half of the main sword wielders (War and Dante) have wielded *some* sort of scythe in their life. Though even then, only Death and DI Dante tend to use it as a straight-headed polearm :P That's hardly a criticism-- i generally like this genre for what it is, i don't want to see it fall victim to "it has to be realistic!" I just find it a fun observation to see just how much attention scythes as a weapon get in this genre. That said, axes and maces are severely underrepresented. Only Darksiders 2, Norse GOW and Brütal Legend did anything with axes. And from what i remember, only Darksiders 2 really did much with *maces*. It also has glaives/polearms, hammers, claws, bucklers, gauntlets and arm blades.

Where greatswords perhaps shine the most is when used by bodyguards. They can handle multiple opponents and move nimbly like a sword thanks to their balance and sheer intimidation. If you consider a bodyguard might be dealing with ruffians on the street and not pikemen, it makes a lot of sense in that context I think and that is where we get much of our source material from. In Japan and Europe we also get mentions of them being used for niche purposes aboard ships to clear space for a boarding party. At least before firearms and grenades in the case of Europe become common enough to render that strategy useless. Apparently in Late Medieval/Early Modern Europe some travellers who had some extra money might carry a big two-handed sword with them as well if they expected trouble. You could argue a spear is better as a rule, but perhaps if you want something more intimidating or more nimble for multiple opponents you might prefer a bigger sword. Plus spears can get stuck which is less of an issue with swords if cutting. So I think the greatsword or big longsword does make a good degree of sense as an adventurers weapon in a fantasy context without a doubt. Not the fantasy oversized stuff without in universe justification of course :).
@unclebounce1495
@unclebounce1495 9 месяцев назад
Dont think that's a good argument. While as a bodyguard there would be scenarios where a polearm would be disadvantaged by the terrain or ensclosure of a building/structure, the same would also apply to a greatswords. Even today in modern era, security experts warn first thing about home defense and long weapons (carbine rifles or shortguns or even baseball bats) that they can be hindered greatly by hallways and doors in a home defense scenario. a bodyguard would have to take such things into consideration, too. even outside, most side streets and alleys were pretty narrow by today's standards, too.

If you find fencing sources for greatswords they usually mention bodyguard work and multiple opponents as well as practical scenarios like this. I’m not suggesting greatswords are the only body guard weapon, but we are told this is one of their primary functions.

Greatswords have that particular "Area offence" fighting style where you keep swinging the blade around using its momentum. Which would be useful to deter multiple attackers, even if surrounded. Which would work well for bodyguards if the threats they would encounter were things like muggings/caravan raids. I'm not sure there's much evidence of crime happening within buildings back in the day (At least the sorts of crime that would warrant a bodyguard) outside maybe tavern brawls but those aren't always armed fights, even IF people were armed.

@@kuesdav Yes, a functional "sword spear" would probably be based on a glaive. I'm just thinking how close we can keep the power and strength of an ultra great sword without completely losing its look. The closest I can think of is again taking a sword the size he uses and assuming it's real, you would need the hilt to be the same length or as long as a hilt needs to be that you can hold apart for stability and movement. You would most likely need to hold the hilt like you are holding a spear as close to the tip with one hand and further away closest to the other end. To be able to swing a "great sword" esq tip. Which has anyone actually done anything like that? Fuse a great sword and spear? That would be an "ultra great sword" just due to its shear size. Almost like an Odachi.
@kuesdav

To the best of my knowledge no one has ever done that, no. Tbh, I cannot see why anyone would, mostly because it would just be cumbersome and difficult to use. Given the impractibility of REALLY giant swords, but also keeping in mind how for example the Landsknechts employed the famous Zweihänders (which were pretty damn big), at what point would you put the limit? What is the size and weight point at which a really big sword see-saws between being usable, and being fantasy nonsence?
@scottmacgregor3444
@scottmacgregor3444 9 месяцев назад
That's actually going to depend on not just the overall weight, but both the length and the mass distribution of the sword in question. If the sword has zero distal taper and is exceptionally long, it's going to be difficult to handle than something of the exact same weight and better balanced. It's also going to depend on the size, experience, and fitness of the swordsman. Brian Shaw is going to be able to comfortably handle a much larger mass than Bruce Lee could have, simply because of the difference in size. As a rule of thumb, I'd suggest you're going to max out at about 3 kilograms for highest level of utility for your average swordsman unless you've got an exceptionally large and strong individual.

The bigger and heavier, and the shorter the grip, the less versatile and more special-circumstance-only it becomes. Sliding scale. Even medium length suffer restrictions, especially in structures where hallways and doorsways are a problem. In a home defense/in building combat, something shorter while almost always be superior to anything medium length or longer. Gladius or the shorter greek variant or a machete would be far superior than just about any long one-handed weapon. same in dense forests, too, which is why machetes are short in jungles and aren't two-handed greatswords.

i've been a fan of medieval weaponry for a while but only in recent years have i started to appreciate polearms and thats probably because i kinda started thinking about this stuff more. and after that i realised that wow! polearms are actually really cool AND useful to boot. even while i appreciate a ridiculously massive hunk of metal for a sword for the cool factor i'm still probably gonna be more of a fan of a warscythe like what you demonstrated in the video. that being said i've barely ever handled a weapon in my life and the last time i remember doing that was when i was in like, 6th grade on a school trip, lmao this is just a massive nerd comment and thats alright

Combination of martial arts with polearms has a variety of extra uses that people don't think about, like using your arms or legs to manipulate said weapon to do things to catch an opponent offguard... You can kick the shaft of your polearm for instance to give it momentum to rise up when it's blade head is touching the ground.

Great video, Skall! I love polearms and would like to see some more videos, both on the mechanics and on the history. I think you've had some videos on "unlikely pairs" of weapons in duels, but I'd love to see more on bizarre weapon clashes, like polearms and rapiers; but with duelists that *had time to strategize against the opposing weapon*.

design idea for fantasy giant sword: spine is a long handle for reinforcement/control aspects, has gap for fingers/hand. it'll be a single-edge weapon, but will have a control capability for the sliding maneuver but still have a proper handle to do regular sword stuffs.

Historically, I can see most advantages held over polearms except in darkness where judging your range is difficult and a sweep of a longer blade is more likely to wound and less likely to be grappled away from you, outside of paranoia for shaft malfunctions. In fantasy, where you can whip around a log of steel like a tennis racket and where hide and scale is stronger than wood, polearm is just pedestrian by nature.

On a totally unrelated note: In 3rd edition dnd there's something called "mercurial weapons", which are swords with a hollow core where mercury can travel through to change the weight mid-swing. Ever thought about doing a video on those? Sounds right up your alley for weird fantasy weapons imo

I wouldn't be surprised if two handed swords are more symbolic than practical, their use in battle seems crazy limited historically speaking, and the very existence of the comically oversized sword trope suggests that there's a major psychological angle to this entire idea.
@jungoder1085
@jungoder1085 9 месяцев назад
Historical two handers like great swords or the shorter long swords aren’t the best for battlefield use but they both excel in civilian environments where they were mostly used Most European great swords like zwei handers and montanes were actually body guard street sweepers which is what you see a lot in treatises, but they were also quite good defensive weapons against pike blocks specifically because of the way you can bat aside lots at once without too much resistance(because it’s a pike lol, not too good against a shorter halberd or worse poll axe) However the soldiers fighting like that died a lot more often hence they got paid double lol Longswords are first and foremost self defence weapons they’re good when you’re going about daily life but they only act as secondary in the battlefield Knights of the 14,15 and 16th century were using lances, spears, halberds and pollaxes as primary weapons Sometimes the sword being a back up to a back up, especially on horse back where one handed hammers and axes were used after the lance was lost

Swords are practical but like every weapon in the right context Also I think you are right on the physiological aspect of big sword unga bunga After all bearing swords were a thing in Europe, oversized great swords that were 7-9ft long overly thick and heavy but they were made of material not suitable to fight they’d bend and shatter if you actually used them Same thing probably goes for that like 13fr katana found in a shrine completely unusable from the design to the materials

As my name suggest I have used both Irish sparth axe (essentially a 6ft dane axe) and the claiomh mor/ greatsword. I personally prefer the axe for not just all the reasons mention here but several more. Though this isn't true for all polearms but with axes and war scythe they are phenomenal in getting around enemy defenses like shields and other weapons. Its really hard to parry on the blade and that overhang can get you even if you block on the shaft. Hooking is an option but I don't intentionally go for it. Its more like I'm swinging for the leg and I overshoot so I'll hook it behind the knee instead. Not to mention that shaft does still carry inertia from the head when it hits too when you follow through.

@@kuesdav thanks for the reply, I did get that the focus of the video is mainly about greatswords in fantasy. Nothing against greatswords in general of course, and the story I'm working on is also pure fantasy. I feel what a lot of people fail to realize regarding large weapons(and weapons in general), is they are designed with a purpose in mind. The curve, the point, the edge, its length, and especially its weight, are all considered. A giant sword serves no practical purpose. Pole weapons are significantly less weighty, have a myriad of heads at their disposal, have excellent reach, and can fill almost any role. Humans have been using pointy sticks since we first realized we could make tools. And besides, polearm katas are just so fun to watch. The polearm is probably my favorite weapon. Its versatility is incredible.

Heya Skall, hope you're doing well; I've always enjoyed your videos, you've always been really professional and informative with them. I was curious if you would find it feasible to do an analysis of great-swords, but from the perspective of say a fantasy character who would have too much size and/or strength to make a longsword an effective weapon? Such as, someone who's 6-7ft+ tall, who has the strength required to easily wield and manipulate a great-sword in much the same way a regular human would wield and manipulate a broadsword, longsword or even a rapier? I'd imagine that for such a person or being, typical weapons like a longsword might actually be considered too light or small for them to wield and fight with effectively, necessitating that they instead use larger and heavier weapons to compliment their own greater size and strength? I'm just curious; hope it makes for an intriguing question. Anyway, again, I hope you're doing well, staying safe and things are going well for you as well. Thanks again.

There's a reason the absolutely massive swords we've seen in history (The chinese horse choppers, or even the VERY LITTLE UNDERSTOOD but there's a few artifacts of them, two-handed spathion style swords from the Byzantines) have seemingly ludicrously long handles. Where they almost look a cross between a sword and a 'swordspear' like the Naginata. Some of them are certainly heavy. (I was reading a Greek source that I cannot locate anymore showing a Byzantine spathion that was about 15 pounds in blade and tang, assuming it was a war weapon, which it seemed to be, it frankly had a very, very large handle and a very short blade, despite being very wide and very long (for a spathion) it frankly was not really even as long as a typical later western sword. It was just much broader, like a significantly embiggened Spathion. And the changdao and zhangdao and such, similarly, had longer handles the more weighty the blades ended up. Heck, you even see this in the bizarre for later armies standards, the steppe sabers. While most were smaller, there are absolutely bizarrely gigantic steppe sabers that look closer to a 'what if you took a paramerion or Mongol saber and gave it the odachi treatment'. the longer and heavier the blade, the longer the handle.

Maybe it's like a nunchaku? A weapon so impractical you're essentially giving yourself a handicap and everyone can see that and think:''damn this guy is so op he's handicapping himself on purpose to keep it interesting''. Combined with:''that sword is so huge it'd kill me even if I stood behind two fully armoured guys''. It's mental warfare

I imagine that any character who can competently wield an oversized sword would be much more effective in battle with a full-metal polearm instead. You get all of the benefits of the increased weight (hitting harder, being more difficult to block, etc), without many of the drawbacks discussed in this video.

Polearms are superior, the only disadvantage is carrying them around, and fighting in confined spaces, really love half length polearms like the glaive ravensbeak or Zulu halfspear. Polearms now can be made the zombie tools way of a full messer style tang, with Aluminum handle scales with a leather wrap for comfort, Which means there is no weak point, the shaft is solid metal, the whole polearm is a viable weapon. Cold weapons matter in trench warfare, Americans/Canadians dominated the trenches using the trifecta of shotgun mace/spade and grenades, can easily see Americans/Canadians adopting more Zombie Tools stye cold weapons with our historical preference for bulky/clunky weapons.

Someone smart has probably already said there's a definite reason polearms were so common in so many parts of the world. Massive swords were so niche for good reason as well. They served a purpose like how rocket propelled grenades serve a purpose, but it would be silly to claim they are 'better'.

in a realistic stance, polearm def is better hands down. In a magic world tho, its quite fun to summon an oversized weight which can cut to fall on to the really big beast. Also using gravitation magic or magnetism magic is a fun way to get around the maneuverability issue. Really tho, unless they are a super sized beast or stupid thick armor.. not much use in an over weighted great sword.
