A Discussion around the Glashutte Original SeaQ. Once a Reissue dive watch that now has become instantly recognisable as an important Modern property from the brand. These are all incredible pieces with a great understanding of size and proportions, housing hand finished movements, but they are largely overlooked. Why? There are Many Reasons, from the Juxtaposition, to Price and Design.

The SeaQ is a really special piece in a lot of ways. It does not look like your typical modern dive watch, it has tonnes of character and goes the extra mile with a gorgeous hand finished movement. So what do you Love and Dislike about this machine? 🥃

I love everything about it design wise but as always I think in depreciation, I never buy a new car, especially German brands, you take 2 yrs older and you save up to 40% on the retail price. I'm pretty sure it will retain its value quite well but since it's a "niche" model, and not a Rolex, it'll taste a bit of depreciation for sure. Patience is a thing.

My experience with the Glashütte Original SeaQ Panoramadate: Easy to read the time. Hard to copy the big date (and quality), so there are no copies around. Safe to wear, criminals don't know this brand. And when I wear it in a Rolex AD, they show me the hidden Rolexes and want to sell them to me. Yes, this really has happened.

Fantastic recounting of your experiences Roy and I can believe it all completely. Maybe the SeaQ's aren't aimed at the "new time buyer", but man, anyone who wears these, they know what they're doing - obviously have a bit of experience 😉

Agreed. The Panorama with the clear back offers so much more as a package. I believe they kept the 39mm model solid to be closer to the original (but also because the movement is not "up to date" with their standards) Maybe there was some debate about the approach 🥃

Absolutely stunning line of watches. The only gripe I have aside from the price is that I do with they showed off that gorgeous movement in the 39mm version. The 39mm is lacking in a lot of areas when it comes to movement (like the PR, balance spring) and the Panorama neatens up everything. From the date, clear back, 70hrs Reserve? It's a no-brainer! I love the large date window at the 4:00 position... the grey dial with amazing texture.... it really amazes me how little attention the SeaQ gets! Flip it over, and you can admire the workmanship of the movement, with it's gold rotor and nicely decorated parts! It's not inexpensive, but it's really a fantastic timepiece! I think it is a victim of the BB58. It fits the same as the BB58 you can't see either movement so you miss out on the SeaQ specialness and the price differential between them is too great. The price is above a submariner. Priced at £6.5k to £7k this would be very popular. Looking at the GO catalogue for very simialar money to the Panomatic Lunar. If i was buying a GO I would have the Pano lunar as its more visually interesting and the movement is beautiful to look at.

I agree with you this wearing / feeling very much like a BB58, but you put them side by side and the finishing is worlds apart. The part where I disagree is the price: in actual life, you have close to zero chance to being able to purchase a Submariner at list price. To have it, you have to accept to pay a premium, that brings it above the price of a SeaQ. As for the SeaQ itself, I picked mine new (with warranty card etc.) from a grey dealer in HK for HKD 53.5k, which is about GBP 5.5k. At that price point, it beats virtually any dive watch on the market

Beautiful watch but don’t pay much for one unless you intend on keeping it forever..a bit like Grand Seiko it just doesn’t have any brand recognition outside of a watch nerd which ultimately limits confidence in pre-owned values.

I've own the SeaQ in reed green for 18 months and I absolutely love wearing it. The design language, the details, the finishing, the overall execution are top notch. And it remains a very discrete watch, at least worn on a tropic style rubber or fabric strap. My only knock is the power reserve of 40 hours, which for a modern watch is on the (very) low side, and I would have liked a silicone hairspring. Mind you, it never bothered me on any of my 4 or 5 digit Rolex models. Also, I think that part of the reason why this model is overlooked is that you need to have been around the block a few times, and experienced the bigger names (Rolex, Omega) to really appreciate what it brings to the table.

I looked seriously at the SeaQ watches before buying a GS White Birch High Beat. The design, finishing, and movement really appealed to me. Unfortunately, I wasn’t really looking for another dive watch, particularly such an upscale one that I’d be scared to use in many situations where I might damage it. In short, I agree with your take on why these watches are often overlooked, while holding great admiration for them. I also agree with the comment that the smaller model should have an open case back with an updated movement that has a larger power reserve.

I have the Rolex Sub 16613 and was looking for a daily wear tool watch. I really like the 1960's era dive style and went with a Seestern S435, at only $200. Ruggedly built, with incredible specs at this price point. Is it a knock-off of the SeaQ? I want to see their panorama date chrono, executed with a vibrant red dial (blue is too common nowadays, Omega's new Aquaterra with the red dial is class), titanium case (for weight saving and more of tool watch look), all indices on the bezel to have lume (like the Tudor FXD)......and then here is innovative bit - fixed lugs with a quality fabric strap (again like the Tudor FXD), but also having a quick release device so a conventional strap can be snapped on (like a Vacheron). If you use your watch in open water, then you really feel the reassurance of having fixed lugs and the practicality of a velcro strap to go over wetsuit / glove cuffs.......however, with a quality timepiece like this, you don't want to wear it out on the town with a velcro strap, you want a quality strap with a deployment clasp, hence how combining these two designs could be big win /differentiator for this model.

Nice one, buddy! Yep, a beautiful, characterful watch and I'm a big fan of GO - the Senators are great, but huge! The SeaQ is a funny one - people conflate the two models and assume they are both equal quality horology,. The Pano Date is very good, but its size is off-putting for a skin-diver form and it wears bigger than the larger FF (not easy to just scale up a form that was originally 37-39mm). The standard 39mm model is a great dial and case, but a very basic movement for which they ask crazy money. It's not in the same league of movement quality as either size Bathyscaphe (although I think better looking) and really the movement is inferior to a host of cheaper divers like the Sub or Marinemaster. Neither as well made or classic as the SM Trilogy!
@johnnyguitar6697
@johnnyguitar6697 Год назад
While the movement of the 39mm SeaQ is technically not as advanced as that of a Submariner or a Marinemaster, owing to it originating in the 90's, it is substantially better finished than either of them.

THOUGHTS; You kind of said it all man. I've liked the blue version for a while but from my dive watch, I'm looking for a tool. Basically something that is similar to how I use my G shock - cycling, hill walking and general use. For the money, I'd be getting a Tudor BB54 ... or 39mm Pelagos? What do you think of them. The finishing is far superior to that of a Rolex, from the various types of brushed finishes on the case, to the beveling of the sides, to the dial and hands. Being an engineer, how is the BB54 bezel grip from a tactile perspective? Is it a designed to be used as genuine scuba-diving watch like the submariner and Pelagos 39 (ruined only by its extreme relectiveness), or is it more a dive-style watch like the BB58? Thanks.
@ID-Guy
@ID-Guy Год назад
I'd say it's less of a "professional" dive watch compared to models like the Pelagos (with the coin edging) but the grip is so tactile for what it is, very nice and sharp, easy to grip with your fingers and hardly any pressure needed to get a solid grip on it 😉

Love my SeaQ 39. Great size and love the micro adjustment on the bracelet. In some ways, like this better than the oyster bracelet, just wish it had a bit more taper. Also wish the 39 had the display case back :-(. like the larger version does. To your point, I also love the Tudors and have several . . . the SeaQ dial blows away the Tudor though. As much as I'm a fan of Tudor, the SeaQ is in a different category. Also the lumen on the hour marker blows away the 3, 6, 9 on my Explorer or markers on the Sub.

My favourite type of watches are new reissues of the 1950s and 1960s skin diver vintage watches like Omega Seamaster 300 Heritage, Omega Seamaster 300 The 1957 Trilogy, Tudor Black Bay 58, Tudor Black Bay 54, Oris Diver's Sixty-Five, Seiko The 1965 Diver's Re-creation watches, Seiko SPB053/SPB051, and some other watches. This Glashutte's Original SeaQ watch is almost my grail watch. Everything is perfect about that watch, quality, size, and style but I can't stand those huge Arabic Numerals. They are enormous and there are too many of them. They should've made a similar dial to Omega Heritage, four smaller numerals without a date window on the dial. I can't believe that I'm the only one with this opinion, nobody else ever complains about that! Please take a look at Seiko SPB053 (with blue dial and blue bezel), or Seiko SPB051 (with black dial and black bezel). I own Seiko SPB053 and I consider it one of the most beautiful diver's watches ever made. The case is slightly bigger than SeaQ (42.6 diameters and 49.8 lug tip to lug tip) but otherwise, they look almost identical. The dial on my Seiko is the closest thing to perfection and that curvy case, nobody ever made a diver case like that! A very classy tool watch!

Glasshutte should use submarine steel to produce a real diver, with tough character for the daily wear. Sinn has Tegimented submarine steel, no need to worry about salt water, chlorine or the hurdles of dailywear. High polish surface are beautiful when they reflect light but the scratches are highly noticeable. Even my Rolex GMT II, i been wearing for 18 yrs but i dont take it to the pool or the beach, as it damages the finish. I never had mybwatch polished either, i keep it”as is” for true character. But GH original Pano is a beautiful watch indeed, i happen to like it more with a sailcloth strap or silicone strap.
@jb678901
@jb678901 2 месяца назад
Western submarines actually use an HY80,000~HY130,000 steel (low alloy, high yield strength) for their pressure hulls (the higher ratings typically on the top of the sail and top of the rudder...where the boat may need to break ice). You probably would not want to use submarine steel for this application...but that just my opinion...as a former submarine officer on a 688-class fast attack boat. It's much more susceptible to staining/rust if not properly maintained (painted/coated). These steels are necessary for their low weight to high strength ratio. They are also used for their durability under cyclical pressure loading. The 316L Stainless Steel used on most watches is a much better material for this use-case. It's actually harder (more scratch resistant) than the Rolex Sub steel, but will not deliver the same degree of finished luster.

I assume you are looking at the SeaQ Panorama Date at 43.5mm diameter together with the Bathyscaphe, as the regular GO SeaQ at 39.5mm is quite a bit smaller and not really comparable. I think the SeaQ PD and the Bathyscaphe are very comparable specs and finish wise. They it comes down to which look you prefer, as the Bathyscaphe is a bit more stern. I would also highly recommend trying both, as the SeaQ PD is almost 2mm thicker than the Bathyscaphe. The latter would be my choice for that reason alone.

Is that price considered a watch that a majority of 'watch people' wear, with zero concerns of damaging it/banging it against something? I mean, I 'get' that it's all relative, but is a $4,000 watch something you'd wear to do yard work, go hiking, fishing, washing your car? I was under the impression that a majority of people have G-Shocks, Timex's, and whatnot for such activities. Perhaps I am neurotic.
