My uncle had a 2009 Traverse with the 3.6 V6 go over 300,000 miles without needing timing chain or gasket work. Mobil 1 oil changes every 5,000 miles is a solid recipe for engine longevity

@Jimmy S see the Project Farm RU-vid videos for oil testing. They found Amazon synthetic was best for the price, and AmsOil was best for more money. For an engine known to have reliability problems, change the oil early, and check the level every gas fill up. Especially important for a Fiat or Mazda RX-7 or 8.

My wife drove a 2013 Equinox with the 3.6 for 245k miles. We always changed oil at 3000 miles. Never had a timing chain issue and never used oil.

Yes my daily driver has 400000 3.8 2004 Grand Prix,I have 2006 2.8 CT’s same as the3.6, only drive it spring summer fall for pleasure and use synthetic and hi quality filters. The 3.6 and 2.8 not as good on fuel as the iron 3.8

Good motor.. old pushrod design that's reached it's ceiling. High feature engine is decent enough, just needs proper maintenance and probably a catch can.

Agreed, this information is going to save my ass, and wallet. I've always been a 5000km oil change guy, and I swear by Lucas oil stabilizer, to add a bit more viscosity that synthetic oils lack.... oil is useless after 8000kms, does not matter how good it is when new, carbon deposits, depleted additives, and viscosity breakdown is a guarantee, change your oil on time and you won't regret it.... My 12,000 RPM red line, Suzuki Gxr sport bike gets its oil dumped at 2500kms even though I used $18.00(Cad) a liter Motul brand race oil, probably the best oil in the world, but it's beaten to shit by then.

@@brentneves3602 In 1976, the valve seals in my '71 Mustang 302 engine had dried out, cracked and fallen apart. The engine had 129K miles on it and had received oil and filter changes every 2-3k miles, using Quaker State Super Blend 10w-30 (API- SF) oil. While I had the engine heads off and disassembled, I "miked" the valve stems, finding them in the midrange of the new production tolerances. Furthermore, in the top of the cylinders, where a ridge "forms" due to wear of the cylinder bore, there was no ridge. That was in the era of API "SF" oil. Today we have not just conventional, but also synthetic oils, and they are carrying API "SN" and "SN+" ratings. I'm willing to believe that your 2500 km oil changes in the 12,000 rpm motorcycle may well be justified but your 5000 km changes in a street vehicle sound positively ridiculous when compared to oil performance from 4 decades ago. Various sources are pulling us between 3000 miles (4500 km, which is a severe service, worse case example) and 10,000 miles/1 year. Some oil manufacturers are now claiming 15K, 20K, even 25K while at least 2 YT video makers are claiming 36K & 72K mile (54 km & 108 km)over multiyear intervals are being analysis approved. Your 5000 km interval is just as ridiculous as the very high recommended intervals. I don't care whose oil, or its cost, it isn't going over 7500 miles in my engines.

Very good information in this video! Maintenance is key, I’ve got a 2004 Cadillac CTS 3.6L (purchased new) with 212K miles and have never had an issue with the timing chains. I have always done frequent maintenance and use the recommended Mobil 1.

I believe your 2004 engine does not have VVT. If not, it's a whole different ball game......

Milo Janis nope, 2004 3.6 is a VVT motor. It isn’t direct injected but it does have VVT. It’s my understanding that these motors have the same timing chain issues as the ones that are a few years newer. 2004 was the first year of the motor and mine being built in late 2003 it’s an early first year, first gen 3.6.

I worked for a gm dealer when they started putting the 3.6 in the new suv’s in 2007. So one problem was they had the oil maintenance reminder set way too high and the made a new software update to make the oil maintenance intervals more frequently but it still was too long. They also had cylinder head problem where the camshaft has too much end play so you would get cam sensor codes because the tone ring would be too far away from the sensor. Anyway I have had a lot of experience with these engines I tell every customer if you want this engine to last run full synthetic and change it every 3,000 miles if you don’t want any problems. I have a couple customers that listened to this one of which has over 200k on a 2008 GMC Acadia with original chains.

Exactly! It was the people who would go 10K and listen/ignore the oil life monitor who would usually have problems. GM probably started most of this with the oil life monitor system though and saying the vehicles were “low maintenance”.

hi mate, i replaced chains, all sensors, phasers but still same code P0008, P0016.. Can tone ring(reluctor wheel) be a problem? If yes, how can i fix the issue without replacing the whole crankshaft?

@@aykutyildiz7133 more than likely the reluctor ring slipped on the crank to repair it properly you need to replace the crank. Could you move the Reluctor on crank to get rid of the codes? Yeah you probably but I wouldn’t do that

We have done 8 3.6 motors this year, and all of them the right bank top tensioners are failing from lack of oil changes.. It gets soooo dirty, that the hydraulic tensioners have no oil going to them.. Love the advice on the checking the sprockets to see if they are good or not.

Great video. I've got an 05 CTS 3.6 with 173K and I've always had to check the oil frequently because of the consumption. Never running real low and always adding fresh oil has most likely benefitted the engine.

Hi Pete, excellent explanation of GM's 2.8, 3.0 and 3.6 engines, we have the 3.0 and 3.6 here in Brazil and they have a bad reputation in the market, due to problems related to the timing chain and camshafts (pulleys), but nobody here can explain the real reason for these problems and vehicles like the Captiva 3.0 and 3.6 and the Omega 3.6 (it's the Pontiac G8 or the Holden Commodore) end up having a bad reputation in the market, in addition to the high maintenance cost, since the parts are very expensive, I'm talking about more than R$ 5,000.00 in parts, the equivalent of more than US$ 1,000.00 for a kit of chains and drive pulleys. I work with automotive repair and I'm a GM fan, but I had no idea that these problems with gas circulation and oil life influence so much on the engine's durability. Here in Brazil we have the custom of replacing the mineral base oil with 5,000km/3,000Mi, 7,500km/5,000Mi with the semi-synthetic base oil and 10,000km/7,000Mi with the synthetic base oil. Once again, thank you very much for the explanations and helping to elucidate the problems with these GM engines.

Rear bank looks smoked. My son has a 3.6L with 126K miles. Change the oil every 4K miles with full synthetic. It runs and starts like new. No Noise on start up or running when cold. A great engine if maintained properly.

James Last yes and check the oil,weekly I have a 3.6 cts check oil weekly goes down a pint in 5000 miles . A co worker changed his oil on his 2007 3.6 every 10000 lolo I told him to check it was 4 quarts down at 9800 miles , I told him I would not go over 5000 and to use synthetic and gm filters he said that was to expensive lolol. I predict his car is going to the crusher in 12 months

Thank you Pete I have a traverse with a new engine due to a timing chain failure at 120000 miles. The new engine was low on oil recently which I obviously am now hyper aware after spending 5800.45 on parts and labor. Your explanation on the oil use makes perfect sense. Subscribed!

As a life long are certified master tech, what I see is no one uses the specified oil and the run it well past when the oil change soon message appears.....I personally have had both the high feature v6 and the 2.4 4 cylinder that everyone seems to have timing chain issues with. Use decks rated oil ,changed at required intervals , over 150 k miles with no oil use and no mechanical issues. Old school 3.1 v6 with Mobil one changed at oil life monitor intervals ran 267 k miles and still no oil use between changes , still got same fuel mileage as new ,zero mechanical issues! Still had original water pump.....it ain't majic ,it's maintenance !!

Excellent video. You are correct all PCV systems will draw some oil vapor into the intake and with GDI engines this contributes to intake valve coaking. Some owners have installed catch cans to remove much of it. The underlying problem with chain wear is fuel dilution and abrasive soot caused by GDI. Having low oil level will also concentrate the fuel dilution and soot along with higher temps and low performing hydraulic function. The oil will shear the viscosity of the oil back to a 20 weight or less due to fuel dilution. People need to ignore the OLMs and go with 3k drain intervals and only go to 5k with oil analysis. Use a Group IV oil and quality filter. I installed a 2 micron by-pass filter on my engine to remove the soot, and has worked extremely well. These are the same particulate filters used on diesels. The OEMs and Oil Companies have known about this accelerated wear of rings and chains for many years and have only until now come out with more timing chain testing wear tests and new formulations to disperse the soot in API SP and GF-6.

Great information . I don't understand how people spend over 30 K on a vehicle and try to cheap out on oil changes . It is the life blood . If you spent an extra few hundred dollars in the life of a vehicle and extended the miles or avoided this major repair - would that be worth the money ? You can pay me now or you WILL pay me - big time - later ! Change the damn oil and don't be so cheap !

That's because the owners manual tells them you don't have to change the oil until the oil life reads to change the oil. This us out the manual for a 2019 CTS with the 3.6 L V-6 engine which I purchased at the end of May 2019. No way would I rely on the oil life read. Personally I think the the engine should have been designed with a "dry sump" system. This would circulate the the oil before start up and the VVT engine would have proper lubrication at start up. Then do your oil level checks and maintenance regular. Give me back the day of the 5.0 L and 5.7 L engine. By the way my CTS has 700 mile currently on it with its first oil change being done at 1000 miles, then ever 3000 afterward. A lot of wear metal in the first 1000 miles of a new engine break in. Of course the dealer disagrees with me telling me to wait for the oil life indicator. One other thing is GM is pushing to use there lube oil for the vehicle. I heard special lube is going to be offered by the oil brands soon for these engines.

I seen a eco tech engine turbo lock up and then they ran the engine dry. the engine was gone told the engine is done and the turbo is lock up. they though i was full of shit next guy told them the same thing.

Oh how I miss the 3800. Last one I had was an 06 Lucerne. 270k plus miles, no motor issues. Replacing our 3.6 in a 2010 enclave now. Had it from 110k-140k miles oil never more than a quart low, but who knows what happened prior.

One time I asked a mechanic at a Chevrolet dealer about this. He said every one they got with a stretched chain was because of neglected oil changes. This wasn't at the dealership, it was when I was out with friends and ran into him.

the olm-[oil life monitor] was considered "approved" time to change oil, owners just drove car until the light went on, later gm changed the olm programming on new cars and advised a reflash on used. With Variable valve timing, the engines are pretty technological, so frequent oil changes and use of dexos rated syn works excellently. These direct injected engines have created more sludge and coking which is suspended better in syn oil. Keep engine internals clean and they are good engine.

I have the ly7 3.6 in my holden commodore with original chains at over 260k on the clock. Religious maintenance every 10k km instead of the recommended 15k is they key.

Good job explaining why GM high feature engines suffer chain strech👍 I have one and added a catch can right after we purchased it to separate most of the oil, water and acid from blow-by and prevent cokeing on the intake valves. I also use full synthetic oil and change every 3,000 miles...oils cheep compared to a major tear down. 🤔

@@williamcallahan9411 Every vehicle is a bit different, but in general terms, you are just shunting in the catch can between the PCV valve and the intake manifold. In this way, moisture, oil, acidic vapors leave the engine and enter the catch can where the majority of material is condensed and left in the can with only the crankcase fumes to be sent back to the intake manifold for final ingestion. Leaving the heavy material ie oil in the can in theory should help prevent cokeing on the back side of the intake valves on direct injected gasoline engines. Just do a search on catch cans and the benefit on direct injected gas engines and you’ll find a wealth of information…hope this helps

Ok thank you very much for validating my thoughts on this issues! I’ve had a number of these 3.6 V6 High Feature engine’s, that have been just fine in my GM cars and trucks! To read the numerous complaints from a dude in the comments sections here on RU-vid named Guy Puroulx blabbing to me to stfu about my “craporado”? All because I question what some are saying on RU-vid about the 3.6 GM engines being junk! Where in reality if you take care of them by changing the OIL on a regular basis, using at least the Oil you’re owners manual tells you to, or like I do, using a high grade Full Synthetic Oil at every 4,000 miles of hard driving like towing a lot, or more like not over 7,000 miles of easy speed limits an commuting! That you won’t have these few serious oil neglected related troubles! So everyone take care, have fun and stay safe out there!

If they would’ve only put an oil level sensor on these engines. Many repairs wouldn’t have been necessary. Don’t get me wrong, the chains are a weak link (pun intended). But they’re definitely the first thing to go when the oil disappears.

I think the chain quality depends too. I learned that the hard way when I bought my G8 with the 3.6 and the car dealer said they put a "new" chain on it to which it then stretched shortly there after and had to pay over $2K to get an entirely new chain kit put on the vehicle by a former GM mechanic at the shop I always go to. Now I'm diligent about checking the oil in the car and keeping it full of oil at all times.

Have read a fair bit about timing chain failure on the 3.6 motors. I figured i'd play it safe and change the oil and filter (a Wix or Delco filter) when the oil life indicator hit 50% and again at 100%. Your video backs me up but explains why the chain/s fail. So let's get this straight - the client found enough money to buy a $45000+ SUV but he's so cheap he tries to go the limit on his oil changes and uses regular oil because synthetic oil is too expensive. Now that makes a lot of sense doesn't it ? ? ? Very informative video.

I think it’s because people just rely heavily on the oil life monitor and don’t check the level in between oil changes. In the service manual it probably recommends checking the oil monthly. But we all know nobody ever reads the owner’s manual.

Everything is so much more credible when the explanations are provided. I have more confidence in this advice than anything else I've been able to find. Now, short of tearing the engine apart, is there a way I can check how well the previous own kept up with the oil change schedule when I look at a used vehicle?

The other issue when you neglect the oil, especially in Direct Injection (DI) engines, is increased carbon on the back of the intake valves. That can lead to poor fuel economy and the risk of carbon bits dislodging into the combustion chamber. DI also causes fuel dilution in the oil, which on long oil changes, can effectively reduce an oil's viscosity by one grade (i.e., a 5W30 becomes a 5W20). Further, neglected oil will have reduced detergents/dispersants to control soot, which is a natural by-product of combustion/blow-by, which acts like grit and prematurely wears out internals like the multi-link cam chains. So yeah, not a good practice to extend oil change intervals past 5k miles, especially with DI engines.

I always do 3k oil changes but I don't have DI. If I were to get a car with DI engine, I would only go with a Dual Injection version which also runs port injectors which cleans the back side of the intake valves.

Just replaced the chain in my 09’ Buick Enclave cxl. Also did the water pump, thermostat, hoses, etc. runs well, quiet engine, no other issues. Should be good for another 100k now. Great video. 👍🏻

Samoremusiclover well you could have a fuel pump issue, injectors, spark issue, could also be the cam or crank sensors , their is many variables . Start going through it one by one , but don’t sink a lot of money into it, can get expensive real quick ! Most people just sell or junk the older enclaves , not worth fixing! The 3.6 L can be a real pain! Best of luck ! 🙏

After watching your video, I immediately checked my Cam Cover Gasket Kit [as I am doing my timing chain on a 2012 Buick LaCrosse 3.6L Leather Trim] and made sure that I had the correct gasket, as you explained in this video. Sure enough, I was sent the wrong one, a phone call later I received the correct one in the morning. Thank you for bringing it up to us all. And yes, I did subscribe! Happy days.

awesome video. Great explantation. I'm replacing chains on my 2012 Traverse this week.... dealer quoted $3600. I'll be well under $1000 including a rental car for a week. Great tips and advice. As this motor ages, it definitely consumes more oil. Didn't have any issues with it until recently.

Make sure the pcv orifice is clear and you get the updated valve cover gasket. Check back and let us know if your oil consumption lowers.

tensioners are loose while the oil pressure builds up... simply because check valves were removed from oil channels so they drain down overnight

Swadian Knight Yup the v10 isn’t a diesel and does not pull like one..Just like a Harley guy mounting a 2stroke or a 11’000 rpm 4 stroke.. He would call them gutless but that’s not their design.. They made the V10 to approximate the 7.3 in performance.. only way is to spin it..And people expect it to be a torque monster.... nope.. Is what it is.. Mine was a people mover.. but I’m a truck driver, and on weekends I see all the toy haulers broken down with the hood up... guess what? All diesels... 4 strokes may burn fuel and take longer to climb hills.. but there is a better chance of you arriving... maybe cuz there are more diesels pulling than 4 strokes.. why I see so many with a ruined weekend

I thoroughly enjoyed the video. Myself and retired friends discuss vehicle oil changes, and for the most part all agree on the 3 to 5 thousand mile oil changes. Our back grounds cover from the most electronic of the electronic devices to 1000 MW steam turbines. I think your discussion of timely oil changes is spot on. For those vehicle owners that have a tendency to not check oil, they need to establish a friendly re pore with a local garage, relative, etc., to have oil checked often. Most people do it at fill ups, the gas outlets usually even furnish free paper towels for whipping the dip stick off. Maybe the rich folks that own Cadillac's are so busy making money, they just figure they will buy another one when the one their driving quits.

Wow. So informative. Thanks. By the way, I've seen many of these engines that were taken care of with proper oil changes and maintained levels go as long as 120000 on timing chains. Just count on one chain on this engine during it's life. Most shops only charge about 10-12 hours. Piece of cake. Rapid accel and decel is what kills timing chains that are designed poorly.

As the owner of a 2010 Camaro with the 3.6 I've been concerned about the timing chain issue. But your video was helpful and made me feel a lot better because I NEVER go more than 5K miles - usually 3K between oil changes. I've also switched over to full synthetic oil. whats strange is the engine when used in Cadillacs since 2004 have always required synthetic oil, but the rest of the GM products didn't until 2011. I guess the oil life algorithm in Cad's where longer because the max on the rest after a calibration update was 7500 miles.

There's a reason you have to use the Dexos-certified oil. It doesn't break down like regular or traditional synthetic oils. I keep a pair of old oil control valves (OCV) in my toolbox. Whenever I hear someone say, "Well, I'm not paying for Dexos oil!" I pull these out, and show them what happens when non-Dex oil breaks down and clogs all the passages on the OCV intake screens. So, would you rather pay an extra $2.00-3.00 per quart, or an extra grand or two for a timing job? Hmm ... 🤔🤣 Also, I know GM says change the oil every 5000 miles, but I've always done it every 3K, just like the good-ol' days. I prefer Mobil 1™ ESP (Emission System Protection) Full Synthetic 5W-30 that meets the GM-LL-A-025 ( GM dexos2™) spec and has a "Low SAPS" (Sulphated Ash, Phosphates, and Sulpher) rating, or a nominal phosphorus level ≤ 800 ppm.

I have been a Cadillac owner for years. I have two of them that have 3.6 V6. I have noticed oil conception from the very beginning. Never could figure out where it has ever went until I watched your video. I typically check my oil weekly on my older one. The oldest Cadillac I have 168,000 MI and it still going strong. But if I didn't keep the oil changed and a eye on the oil it would go bad in less than a month or two. Your video was very informative!

I was wondering about this video as mine never failed. I guess that is because I kept my car well maintained. Never had any trouble with the engine on my 2010 Buick Enclave (3.6L). Only thing was the recall on the water pump - I had to replace mine as I noted it was leaking. Besides that, sold the car after 150,000 with no problems. Far as I know it is still on the road today. Thanks for sharing - maintenance is key!

@@PetesGarageandperformance 5000 miles. It seemed fine with that. The oil life gauge was at 40% at that point, not telling me to change it but I changed it anyway. The newer GM vehicles are now set to 5000-6000 miles it seems so they lowered it as well. Oh, and I started adding a little oil at 140,000 miles (very little, like a half a quart between oil changes).

Yeah, Like most new motor designs, You should keep the oil very clean. 4K miles max for my engines. I don't care what the manual says. The new oils can hold up. But don't do anything about contamination.

2012 traverse has 189k miles still on original chain's we are trading it in for the new 2019 or 2020 traverse in a couple weeks... we had our oil changed every 5k miles sometimes sooner due to oil consumption then they installed the revised gasket and didn't have a huge issue since then... it still consumed but not as bad as it used to maybe a quart in between oil changes compared to 4 to 5 quarts between changes I had to add at least a quart every thousand before the new valve cover gasket

@@williscurry6557 it was expensive at first but when i learned about the situation within 2 oil changes i had it repaired and didn't have an issue since then. I've heard of horror stories of people ignoring problems like this and end up destroying their car. I drive 100 miles a day with my kids in the car I cant have them broke down on the side of the road with me in 120 degree weather waiting for a tow truck so I have always kept my vehicles on a very strict maintenance schedule. Owners manuel was always in hand with some exceptions regarding some items done sooner than recommended. I have been super happy about the previous traverse I am now a proud owner of a 2020 traverse currently following the break in procedure it does say it's not required but it is recommended. Owners manuel is key if you dont have one get one it really helps.

Years ago the 2 most common method of cam timing was belt for OHC engines and (short) chains for OHV. Both methods being forgiving of less than optimum oil change intervals. With the ascendency of (complex) chain driven DOHC, longer “recommended” maintenance intervals, and variable valve timing, it’s a perfect storm for disaster... I would also add that foreign car owners are typically more willing to be proactive with maintenance and with the domestic adoption of more sophisticated engine design, it’s about using high quality oil and filters changed religiously. This is not rocket science.

Just did this for my wife's 3.0L 2010 SRX, wasn't "difficult", just a lot in the way. Also drilled out the PCV nipple as well. In my case, she had a P0017 only.

This 3000 mile fiction is from the 1950s, with synthetic oil and a proper filter the factory recommendation is fine. The problem is you need to CHECK the oil level every 1000 miles or so and keep it up to the line (but not over it). You can't get a 'low restriction' filter that will really do anything useful, you really need a premium filter with synthetic media and it has to be rather big to do its job, these tea cup filters are a joke and not a funny one. If the engine is designed so that it takes a mechanic an hour to change the filter, buy a different car.

Henry Ostman I go about 5000 on full synthetic on my 3.8 series 3 Grand Prix on my caddy cts 3.6 3000 miles and I check my oil 2 times per week using mobile 1 synthetic 5-30 . A co worker has the same cts as me I told him about checking the oil often ,he told me he was due for his 10000 mile oil change and it was down 4 quarts . My car uses about a pint ever oil change which these engines are noted for and poor gas milage compared to the 3.8 series 3

One thing I noticed was not mentioned is the fact that these engines use the timing chains , the bottom and front ones, to drive the high pressure fuel injector pump. That pump takes a fair amount of force from the chains to drive it. One of the cams on the front head has a three lobe cam attached to it that drives the pump. I was turning the engine over with no plugs in it and was shocked how much force I had to apply to drive that pump. I removed the pump and it turned very easy. No wonder those chains are prone to stretching.

There is still a traditional electric pump in the tank that pushes fuel to the high pressure pump. I was not expecting the high pressure pump to require so much torque to operate. Way more than the valves require to operate. GM should make the chains way bigger to handle all the additional torque the high pressure pump demands from them

Here in Europe we change the oil around the 20.000/25.000km. I agree due to my experience it is to long.....even with the "best" oils on the market. We also have here the issues with higher oil consumption with the down size engine's, and premature wear on the chains. My advise here for costumers is to not stretch the planned oil schedule for 1 year or 15.000km. in my opinion this is the maximum for giving the engine the max life span

If you have an engine where you have to change the synthetic oil before the manufacturer specifies because it has shoddy engineering regarding the timing chain then it's not a good motor. I've seen tons of the 3.0 and 3.6 V6 engines in for timing chain issues (and most customers shell out the $4700 required). I change the oil in my Mercedes at the recommended interval of 15,000kms or 1 year with a synthetic 229.5 rated 5W40 oil and it has more kilometers on it versus the mileage on a failed 3.0/3.6 GM engine and yet it has no timing chain issues nor are timing chain issues a problem even in neglected MB motors. Shape up GM, or don't actually, as I make a good amount of money on selling these timing chain jobs.

This! I have had multiple cars go over 200k with 10k oil changes with M1 no problems at all. The wifes Escalade has 204k on it now and I just change the oil when the service reminder pops up (8-12k depending) and it still runs like a champ! Some engines require adding oil by design, just top up as needed.

I have a 02 325i. When I bought it it had 274K. I went to the shop where the previous owner had it serviced for everything. They gave me a stack of paperwork for the services done there. I also inquired about the recommend miles for rhe timing chain replacement. They said they do not recommend changing the chain!?!?! I said ever??? He replied no. It is a rare sight to see a chain failure on these motors. I'm now over 284K with no issues or chain clatter. I figured if it goes 300K she's worth a rebuild.

My wife has a 2008 Cadillac CTS with 120k+ miles. It has always used some oil, now I know why. I have always changed oil using the oil life monitor, but I never let it get low on oil and have always used Mobil 1 full synthetic in it. Also, I have always suspected people letting the oil level get too low was a major problem with these engines and some others too. Hyundai and Kia come to mind. Many people today were never taught that you have to check your vehicles vital fluids periodically.

Be sure to use oil that meets the manufacturer's specs. Look in the owners manual for the correct viscosity and spec number. Match the spec number in the book with the spec number on the oil jug. Most shops just put whatever brand oil the local distributor they have a contact with carries. Might get close or the correct viscosity if you are lucky but may not meet the spec.

It's amazing how many folks fail to check their oil. Very good video and thank you for the valuable information. I would consider a new Chevy. I have a 1998 Chev S-10 and my wife has a 2001 Chev Malibu. They still run like new.

I had the 3.6 port injection in my 2008 Vue bought it with 43k miles and ran it till 180k. No problems and usually changed oil about every 4k with conventional no synthetic. It was an excellent engine to me. Hopefully it's holding up still with the new owner but who knows.

@Richard Skipper That's the oil suggested for the engine and done at Chevy Dealership. I've heard its and issue with the early direct injected engined more so than the non-direct injected 3.6 engines. Also changing every 4k on conventional is fine. Going 6k+ between oil changes is fine with Sythetic. But remember some of these people are throwing sythetic in and running the engine till 6k and not checking oil very often. 2k more miles than me and they are probably a quart more below where I am at 4k. That is about 1.75 quarts low. Just cause you have sythetic doesn't mean you don't burn oil. Check your oil level at least every 1k. I'm driving a Subaru right now and it has an oil low level that will illuminate at 1 quart below full. My Saturn low oil light doesn't come on until you are 3.5 quarts below full. That's a bad design.

Some mechanic on RU-vid in Wichita says avoid the GM 3.6 all together. Is it just a question of oil changes and oil level?

@@Jack51971 it is earlier 3.6 engines like 2007 or older. I believe they fixed the port ones in 2008 and the direct ones in 2010. Like I said no issues with my port 2008. Even when run low on oil. Granted yes keeping the oil level right on and oil changes that are adequate is important.

Something tells me that when they changed over to direct injection (which I'm not a fan of on a good day, but anyway), they never actually redesigned it for DI.

I don’t think it’s the tensioners. They seem ok. I just think it’s lack of oil to the tensioners and actuators. And lack of splash lubrication on the chain all are a combination for timing chain disaster.

Just make sure there’s oil in it and you’ll be fine. 2011 might already have the updated design gaskets.

I dont own one of these, but if a good portion of owners are waiting for thier change oil light to come on before they even think about checking thier oil (im betting its more than 50%) then thats going to scew the numbers to show a high % of failures as opposed to conscientious owners who not only check their oil but change it every 3k miles. I have no idea why ANY of the manufacturers suggest 7k or more, thats just bad planning on every level, and doesnt help anyone involved.

They suggest long intervals because the oils have gotten better. The problem is they cant predict how the owner accrues the miles. A NYC taxi cab might run (3) 8 hr shifts a day & do 7500 miles a month. So its oil is getting changed around the 30 day interval & is fine. But grandma might not do 7500 in a whole year. So tha oils getting more acids & bad stuff just from sitting.

People hark back to the "good ole days of engines". There have been some duds along the way too. But I think a larger issue is people in the "throwaway culture" simply skipping or skimping on maintenance....

In the Good old days of engines - I am 80 and my first car was a 1929 Chevrolet Master - THey actually used a quart of oil every 5-600 miles - and you regularly checked your oil - and gas stations is too - and sold you the quart. WE changed out oil/filter every 3000 miles as well. THat was the responsibility of the OWNER of the car - specified right in the owners manual - and if you did not do it - it voided the warranty. Yes there have been duds - BUT - if you just checked your oil regularly - this one would NOT even be an issue. I had a neighbor who NEVER had her oil changed - and then tried to blame the dealer when the engine seized. You cannot move the Water Pump in a Ford Ecoboost 3.5 or 3.7(A $1500 replacement) - and the current Toyota 6 cylinder requires you remove the Skid Plate under the front of the truck to get to the oil filter - and THEN you must have a special tool to drain the filter before taking it off.

The good old days is like the 80s and 90s, maybe at best 1975-2000. GM went solid state ignition across the product line in 1975, so maybe start there. I don't want carbs and points ignition back. 12,000 mile tune up intervals. Easy work if you had lots of free time, sure, but a distraction if you didn't And if you didn't, well, them old cars would wash down the cylinders with gas every time you flood it out. Then after about 70 or 80K of that, they're burning oil past the piston rings like crazy. Go on a long trip, you stop every so often and it's the old "fill up the oil, check the gas". But anyway. Now if I could have an old car with a fresh engine and install throttle body EFI and something like an MSD E-curve distributor, that would be great.

Yeah, I remember a GM engineer told me the 3800 had a higher rate of failure than the HF family, but because it had a good reputation in the 70s and 80s (relative to other engines of that time, which were garbage by modern standards), people continued to believe the 3800 was more reliable than the HF. Humans are funny creatures and nostalgia carries more weight than science.

My Holden Commodore omega with the 3.6l is still going strong at 160,000km. Change the oil every 5000km. Hope I reach over 200 thousand before the chains stretch.

Great video Pete! Sadly, for me at least, all the points you bring up here translate to: "Avoid GM products like the plague!" I suspect that all this oil burning dramatically shortens the life of the CATs on these vehicles as well. On the upside, looks like these GM designs will be providing you a solid income stream for the foreseeable future!

The point I was actually trying to make is “change your oil regularly and install the updated valve cover gasket”. Then you wouldn’t have to worry about oil consumption issues. The oil burning has to take a toll on the catalytic converters.
